"Nice for a NETBOOK" on by ektelonman

Pros: For a Netbook, it really does all that it should be doing. Surfing the web, eMails, some word processing,...Good size hard drive and great battery life.

Cons: the factory installed 1GB is barely enough

Summary: Keep in mind that this is a Netbook, and should not be considered as a replacement for a fully functiional laptop or a desktop machine. If you try to compare a netbook with those machines, this machine will come up short everytime with the exception of the lightness and portability, which are the strong reasons why you want a Netbook. For me, this is a great 2nd machine (other than my laptop), that I can carry around the house, on weekend travel when I do not need my fully functional laptop. The 1GB that it came with was quickly swapped out with a 2GB stick (Maximum) and it does make a difference. It was running a little slow with the 1GB stick to the point that I would type faster than it would register. I thought that they keyboard was a little flimsey whereas the keys would vibrate when typing. Even typing lightly seem to cause the noise to happen. It doesn't affect the performance, but the keyboard is cheap and light. Which comes to my next comment, the netbook, as with most, is extremely light and portable. I can carry it everywhere in a protective sleeve (purchased separately) in a backpack or suitcase. The Asus Eee has a boot-up feature that allows you to quickly surf the net, although I have not used it extensively. The battery is big in comparison to the unit, but the charge lasts quite a long time. Great Netbook for the price and I hope that it will last a few years.

"AWFUL Customer Service" on by kmjtsmith

Pros: If the unit was working I think I would love it.

    Cons: Customer Service
    Defective

Summary: Had unit less then a month. Discovered when battery started to die while using I could not plug it in without the screen becoming scrambled lines. I would have to do a hard restart and loose all information. When contacting Asus Customer Service no one speaks good English. They could not understand my problem and only know how to read a script.
Idiots!!!! I had to pay to send my unit to them. When returned it was sent back with no battery. I called and spoke to a Supervisor who says she will submit my problem and that I should call back in a week. I asked to have resolved sooner due to fact that I can not see if problem is resolved without battery. She said you can just plug it in and use it. Apparently she did not understand the reason behind even purchasing this unit.........a long lasting BATTERY for mobile use. I have been so frustrated with Asus Lack of Customer Service that I will NEVER purchase an Asus product again

"Battery failed and customer support was poor" on by pdorfman

Pros: The 1005PE has the features you would expect from a product in this class. It appears to be similar to comparable products from Dell, HP and Gateway. Decent processor speed, performance and screen resolution.

Cons: The battery failed in less than 4 weeks. Perhaps as a result of this, drivers had to be reinstalled and the entire system configuration rolled back to before the initial battery failure.

Summary: I was disappointed with the ASUS product quality and customer support. After reporting the battery failure, ASUS wanted me to pay to ship bad battery to them before they would send a replacement. They finally agreed to pay shipping -- but only 7 day ground shiping! After receiving battery, they sent the replacement via 7 day ground as well. I complained and a supervisor offered to expedite the shipment -- if I would pay extra! Clearly product quality and customer service are unreliable. I would have expected much faster and considerate response after such an obvious product failure. I will not buy another product from them.

"Great netbook, great price" on by kuliddar

Pros: 250gb for a low price
    Simple to use
    Long battery life
    Easy upgradable RAM

Cons: Slow to install and uninstall programs as well as Win updates (1 gb of RAM for a Win7 - even if if it's Started Ed. - is low).

Summary: I received this as a birthday gift as I am a lot less in front of my desktop computer anymore and have limited access to it. Overall I have been very happy of this product. I have read the reviews of some and wonder if they realize what these types of "laptops" actually are.

What do most people do on their computers nowadays? Internet and Email! That is what it has been designed for. Don't try to run games or photoshop on it, it's not made for that. The netbook is used as a backup device when you are on the go, nothing more. People who think otherwise should use bigger 14-17 incher laptops that have a lot more power.

If you use full power of this unit, the battery will last for about 5h30m. However a few tweaks brings battery life to it's potential of 11hours. It's obvious some don't know how to use the hybid mode. What's great is that you have an alternate power button that will only start internet related applications and shut everything else which again is what you will be using it for anyways.

The 1gb RAM is a constant in all Netbooks and Win7 comes in more and more of them by default. Hence the best way to optimize performance is to use low memory applications. I use Google Chrome and it which works incredibly fast (forget about explorer on that thing) and use FIrefox as a backup. I also use Open Office if I need something else other than wordprocessing.

Overall, I am happy with this product. I selected this one after trying several netbooks and all of them having flaws or simply not trusting the brand. I think that people should take the time to look through the manual that comes with it, explore their netbook for a few hours, and frankly need to look at their real needs in a portable computer before dissing something that obviously wasn't made for them.

"Great netbook, Great value" on by DRadj

Pros: Good battery life. Mine came with a 250g HD - great value

Cons: Touchpad takes time to get used to. Plus the PC was a bit sluggish until I added more memory. With 2G of RAM runs fine.

Summary: I bought this as a web browser computer and for watching videos when on airlines. Overall I am very pleased. It meets all of my expectations. I would recommend adding more memory. It comes with 1G. But after upgrading to 2G it really made a big difference in speed.
