"It's just an Eee 1000HE with one less USB port." on by johnb6597
Pros: Doesn't wander far from the style and features of the Asus Eee 1000HE. The built-in Bluetooth is awesome. Excellent on-the-go machine.
Cons: Essentially the same as the 1000HE, except with much shorter battery life and 1 less USB port. Why, Asus, why??? Fingerprints will make you crazy...would be nice to see a matte-finish surface that is less fingerprint-prone.
Summary: The extra $40 - $50 to buy this model instead of the Eee 1000HE is a waste of money. Best Buy customers beware...model sold at Best Buy is NOT the same full-featured model sold on Amazon and by various other retailers. Asus configures the model sold at Best Buy very differently.

"A nice upgrade, if you can live with the fixed battery" on by mdulcey
Pros: That tray applet for changing resolution is nice when you're planning to use the netbook to drive a projector, because then you want to run at the native resolution of the PROJECTOR, not the netbook screen.
Cons: For me, the non-replaceable battery IS a big deal - for some purposes I need more life than one can provide. Also, the battery often wears out before the computer does and that means the replacement cost will be higher.
Summary: They've shaved off a lot of weight compared to the otherwise similar 1000HE; the weight is remarkably low for a system with a 10 inch screen. You pay a bit more and lose some battery life, but saving over half a pound of carry weight will be worth the sacrifices for many users.

"Asus told me to pay more to get one that worked" on by ksdz
Pros: None whatsoever.
Cons: Arrived completely nonfunctional. After wasting my time, Asus refused to replace it without charging me extra.
Summary: I purchased this laptop as a gift. It arrived completely nonfunctional. As the seller refused to accept a return, I took the matter to Asus who then told me that I would have to pay shipping in order to receive a replacement of the dead-on-arrival unit (a process which of course would take a week). When I refused, citing absurdity, I was told customer service might be able to help me but they were currently having computer difficulties and they'd have to call me back. They never did.
In light of this, I have to assume that either Asus has zero quality assurance (given their failure to notice a completely nonfunctional unit) or that their product is so fragile that it broke in shipping. Either way, it's obvious that Asus refuses to stand behind it. I'm a reasonable person and I understand that manufacturing is imperfect. But telling a customer they have to pay extra to get a unit that actually works is not only unacceptable, but downright fraudulent.
I have no use for the worthless block of plastic for which I paid nearly $400 and have been forced to file a claim with my credit card company.
No one should purchase an Asus product. After endorsing them for well over a decade, I will never again buy anything which bears their name. Nor will I be purchasing from any store whose policy is to refer returns of completely defective merchandise to irresponsible manufacturers. -
"Terrible quality, terrible service" on by MikeUofMN
Pros: Light weight, thin, long battery life.
Cons: The product itself, slow response from Asus support department.
Summary: I've been able to use this computer for a total of 36 hours in the past month due to repeated hardware failures.
First the battery died within 12 hours of using the unit, wouldn't charge, couldn't use system without the A/C adapter. Shipped it back to Asus, at my expense. Replacement unit arrives two weeks later, hard drive clicks and grinds at first power up. Ship that one back (to their credit this shipping was paid by Asus) two weeks later new unit arrives but is missing the A/C adapter, case, documentation, just the EeePC. I have no leverage with Asus, they only way I can think to get their attention is to warn others.

"A very nice little machine" on by Carlstin
Pros: Weight - almost none
Size - almost fits in a ladies purse
Usability - good
OS - comes with XP Home - replaced with Server 2008 in a desktop mode
Power - excellent 5.2 hours on its first run
RAM - upgradable to 2 gigs for about 30 dollarsCons: For myself the Keyboard is too small - for my wife who I got it for excellent.
Wish it would take more then 2 gigs of Ram.Summary: A truly nice portable machine. XP home is ok, but we replaced it with Server 2008 in a desktop configuration. Works like a charm. It was a present for my wife and she really likes it. It allows her to take work with her and not to have to lug her Dell most places. I do reccomend upgrading the RAM to 2 gigs.
