"What else would one want that this doesn't have?" on by Pinckneyite

Pros: Slim, light, fantastic battery life, lots of connectivity, ample hard drive, matte screen (MUCH better than a shiny gloss screen), and very portable.

Cons: They should simply produce these with 2 M of RAM. It is a $25 upgrade that takes 2 minutes, and why someone would not want to add that on the front end anyway is beyond me. Windows 7 starter is a bit stilted.

Summary: I have had several netbooks, and have looked over most all of those on the market. This dual-core ASUS version, with Bluetooth and wireless g as well as LAN allows for supreme connectivity. With the upgrade to 2 M RAM, multi-tasking is great. BT allows use of a BT mouse, rendering all three USB ports still available. Track pad is large and works fine (but I prefer the mouse). Typically get 10+ hrs, which means never using the power cord during the day, moving from meeting to meeting. We have obtained several of these for other folks at work, and the response is always "Wow!" External optical drive for $50 is useful, but hardly something I use very often. Three months into this machine, haven't found anything I didn't like.

"Decent until the BATTERY FAILS" on by PhillySchmidt

    Pros: ergonomic design, easy set-up

Cons: battery failed at 6 months + 1 week, touchy touchpad, customer service hard to reach

Summary: Overall a solid purchase at first. Easy to install, convenient for travelling, day trips, note-taking. A little on the heavy side for its size but still very portable.

Be warned, however that the BATTERY WILL DIE. Mine occured at 6 months + 1 week, just missing the warranty. A friend with a similar model had the battery die suddenly at 8 months. Apparently Asus knows of this issue since the battery is only warrantied for 6 months while the computer itself gets a year.

If you do need to reach customer service, call rather than try web. Their website is largely useless (full of blank and redundant links). It was easy to get someone on phone although he didn't help at all.

Upshote: You're payng for 6 months of a decent travel netbook.
