"excellent value for the money (paid under $1000 with rebates )" on by dklein1947

Pros: 2.5 hours long enough for a full DVD movie and up to 4 hrs, Screen is bright and clear

Cons: Key board a little cramped. DVD tray can easily be activated to open by accident

Summary: I was not sure this computer would work for me. I was looking at a Dell 700. But, I am extremely satified with the Averatec 1000. It is so light weight, very small, and bright 10.4 in screen, and has given me up to 3:45 hours of battery time. ( 2 1/2 with DVD running) It has Centrino processor, 512 ram, CD RW, DVD and 80 gig hd. It connected right away to my wireless network. I had a few questions and Averatec support did the job and helped. The only problem is the under sized key board, but what can you expect on such a compact computer. Software bundle included is sparse. You will need some of your own. I recommend anyone interested in the this, give it a try.

    Updated
After 6 months the audio input jack broke, leaving me with no sound. Averatec required me to pay for shipping to California. They had my notebook from Dec 21 to Jan 4. Their warranty states repair time is 5 to 7 business days. This was far longer. They sent it back to me FedEx ground on Jan 4th and as of today, Jan 11. I still do not have it back or know if it is fixed. I have received no written communication on the repair status and have been without my laptop for 3 weeks. I do not recommend ever buying from this company if you expect to need repairs, which statistics say you will. I should have bought a Dell, their warranty is in home or by mail in a several days.

"This laptop makes me feel like a nicer person" on by Seth Israel

    Pros: Price and simplicity

Cons: Key board to small for my 6'3 225 have hands LOL

Summary: I bought this laptop on a whem. I figured if I didn't like it in less then 7 days, I would return it. However, when shopping for something better, I could not find anything in the same place as it relates to price and qaulity.

I was looking for a laptop that I could just perform the three basics of business, Word, Powerpoint, and Excel.

It does all this and more. I say more because the lightness and compact features of this laptop has made me happy to travel again. It is such a joy not to have my shoulders hurt after a sales trip.

I bought the White and Maroon colored model. I am not sure if there was a black one avaliable, but I think that would be nice for customers to have a choice.

I must say it is a new exeperiance having a white laptop. Somehow it makes me feel nicer when I am computing - like life isn't all that serious, you know like those other laptop users appear to be.

I can't give this laptop a 10 is because my love affair with it is too fresh. Like all lovers they tend to turn on you and no longer perform they way you want. I figure why set myself of for failure and give it the perfect "10"

"A perfect notebook for travelling when you don't feel like sitting at home on the desktop." on by tanjo

Pros: Beautiful design; easy set up; tight and compact; integrated wirelss, 56k, and ethernet; could probably heat a small bedroom during winter

Cons: Speakers aren't very loud, ethernet cable not included, notebook could probably heat a small bedroom during winter

Summary: I'm a college student and this little guy goes everywhere with me. It's ultralight and tiny, so it easily fits in my backpack. Though I'm not sure I would recommend this as the only computer for a person to own. I have a desktop at home. I wouldn't really want to write a 7 page paper on this little guy. However, typing is actually surprisingly natural and fast. This notebook is perfect to go mobile--resturants, the library, lying in bed. The speakers aren't exactly amazing and you won't be jamming out to music unless you use headphones, but you probably won't be jamming out in public anyway. I bought some 6 dollar Koss earbuds, and they sound very nice. I've noticed the bottom of the notebook can get pretty warm, which is scary--but I've never experienced the heating affecting system performance.

"Great mobile device." on by 0stack

Pros: Form factor, build quality, layout, features. Came with XP Professional installed, and NOT XP Home.

Cons: You can't swap in a floppy drive or extra battery for the DVD/CD-RW drive.

Summary: I travel for a living, and have been in search of a reasonably priced ultra-portable for some time now. I was originally looking for a 12" model, because I was concerned that the 10" models would be too small to be useful. Well, I had the opportunity to check one out at a CompUSA, and was really impressed. I also looked at the Sony VAIO 10" model, and it was very nice also, but it really didn't offer any additional features other than a DVD-RW, and I think the 1000 has a little cleaner layout.

I found the 1000 to be capable of handling any of the MS Office apps that I use regularly, and even handled a "Call of Duty" demo level with ease (to my surprise). In comparison to other modern laptops, you may consider the 1000 "slow", but it really is very capable. It might choke on some video editing, or current generation 3d games. The display might be a tad small for large spreadsheets, and if you are far sighted at all, you will likely need your reading glasses.

But for anything other than intensive 3d applications, or spreadsheets requiring lots of desktop realestate, this little laptop is a really slick machine. I also really like the built in card reader. Now I can leave behind the usb card reader. And I have no problem with not being able to re-program the quick launch button to another application, thats what the quicklaunch section tf the taskbar is for.

I still love the 19" display attached to my desktop at home, but for a road warrior, this one is hard to beat. I would have given a 10 rating if the DVD/CD-RW was swapable with a floppy, or an extra battery. Battery isn't AS good as others in its class, but it still lasts well over 4 hours, which is still awesome for a laptop.

"Good features, Great price" on by mpcooper

Pros: Small size, Nice Keyboard, Affordable

Cons: Tiny display is uncomfortable for long periods

Summary: I returned this machine after only one day. It is a fine computer, and does everything it claims, but the tiny screen was uncomfortable to read. it is not the computer's fault. I just did not realize how diffucult the screen would be to use. if you are looking for tiny laptop this is a good choice. For me, however, I would get a slightly larger machine. You should try this one in person before purchasing one.
