The worst dollar value on the market

Pros: It would make a good anchor for a model boat.

Cons: Poor mem configuratio. CPU runs at 100% most of the time.

Review: The worst service and support I have ever had. Good service is what makes a good company. DELL is not that company.

Serious Motherboard Problems

Pros: Absolutely Nothing!

Cons: To Many To List...

Review: First of all, Dell wont admit that the Hannstar motherboards used in this model has serious issues. Dell should compensate customers that own this model. If you dont believe me go to ebay and search how many of these units are on there. How many units will not power up and how many bids for replacement boards as well. I feel like sh*t recommending this laptop to my mother to purchase. She payed like 800 dollars new in 2004. She only used it on trips and occasional word processing. In 2.5 years, she probably used it total of 30 hours before the motherboard went down. I feel like i owe her for recommending dell's laptops. All i can say is DELL NEVER AGAIN!! As a Service Tech, I will never recommend dell to my customers or purchase a Dell.

quite possibly the crappiest laptop ever made

Pros: it's dirt cheap

Cons: the cooling system doesn't work and the computer overheats too quickly, slow, and useless software

Review: This computer made me hate Dell for even concieving up this piece of sh*t. It's slow crashes a lot because it over heats too quickly and the battery gives out in under 2 hours. DON'T BUY THIS!! NOT even if it's 20 bucks. You'll be wanting your money back soon enough.

Please do not buy this

Pros: Easy to type on, big screen

Cons: Extremely slow, bad with internet, hardly lasts on battery

Review: This was my first laptop and I had been used to slow computers all my life but this thing made me so irritated constantly I had to practice incredible restraint not to throw it out a window. Once my internet service changed I had to have a trained campus IT guy come back twice, both for an hour at a time, to get it to work on my computer when all others using the on-campus service just had to plug it in and they were fine. Please do not buy this unless you want to take anger management after this.

Keep it cool and it will last!

Pros: nice design , feels good

Cons: lack of connectivity

Review: i bought my inspiron 1000 in dec 2004 and used it for 9 months but then it just packed up. i sent it do dell for repair and they got it back to me within 4 working days. it was the motherboard & lcd flex! now i am my 3rd year of owning it and i have been suprised by how reliable it is. i am in the uk so the hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 30GB , the dvd drive is made by Quanta and the included ram was 256mb which is now 512mb. i did not get a free wifi card or any other peripheral. i would say that the screen could be brighter and the battery at over 2 and a half hours is very good considering it is over 2 years old. i love the touchpad and with minimal tweeking it can be just great. also it does indeed get very hot and the fan will come on with little pursuasion. i paid £441.42 on the 18th december 2004 and in 2007 a celeron laptop can be bought for around £379 with cheap vista and a bigger hard drive & ram

Very disappointing

Pros: cheaply made

Cons: It died and I can't revive it!

Review: I bought this as a low budget unit. I pampered it. The screen would crash as soon as I moved it. Then the whole thing died and Dell warranty website wants me to pay them for advice. The computer turned me off to Dell and their lack of customer service will keep me away.

Pros: it's so basic, it's relatively easy to fix [i've learned a lot]

Worst computer ever

Pros: Good screen

Cons: poor battery life, battery runs hot, wireless does not work well, programs won't run right on it, small amount of memory

Review: I've owned this laptop for a year and for a month or two it ran fine but after that it went downhill. I couldn't fit that much music on it without the computer slowing down. The computer was very slow running applications. This was a very poorly built laptop. The computer runs hot, and the battery gets very hot. I'm surprised it's not one of the batteries that Dell recalled for catching on fire. This computer has turned me away from PC's forever. Mac's from now on. Don't buy PC's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Updated
I just recently re-installed windows.... and it still takes at least 2 or more mins. to load! Now something with the charger doesn't work right and the battery doesn't charge right. It just keeps on going downhill.........

Good laptop

Pros: great speed for the money

Cons: external wireless lan which can be a pro.

Review: I paid 700 for this laptop and bought extra memory bringing it up to 500 MG ram. Then it runs normal. The home xp edition needs good antivirus protection which I have (northon) from work. The wireless setting was tricky in the beginning but not any more. The external lan has an advantage, that is, I can unplug it when my students try to mess with it. Great screen. The battery only lasts for an hour max but has no burning problem like the compac. It is much better than my Toshiba which shuts down by itself (probably votage regulator problem, not the fan) after 3 years of usage. I like Dell. The logo 1000 was surely misleading because it is newer than the other higher numbers.

Good Dell for what I paid

Pros: Price, Battery life, durability

Cons: low celeron chip, Graphics, DVD performance.

Review: I got my 1000 in Dec. 2004. I paid 599.00 + tax-Free shipping, Free wireless card, and a free printer (I sold the printer at a yardsale further reducing my overall cost)
I complained about the original battery that only lasted 1 hour and Dell replaced it w/ a l-ion one. I still use mine almost everyday-mostly for surfing the web, and word-but thats all I needed it for. The 1000 has been a rugged useful tool for me.

The computer that turned me off of Dell forever

Appalling quality, Even worse support.

Pros: There are none

Cons: Poor Quality. Poor Service

Sub Standard Hardware and Poor Customer Support

Pros: low price but that's about it

Cons: poor quality hardware, poor support

Review: I bought this machine less than a year ago. It is pretty pampered and just sits on a desk all day. A few weeks ago the screen went from working fine to not working at all. I didn't drop, bump or even move it. I figured since it was under warranty this would be only a slight annoyance. Boy was I wrong. Dell accused me of damaging the screen and refused to replace it under warranty. They wanted $300 to fix it! I patiently explained that I hadn't even moved the machine, it had simply stopped working. They were insistent that it was my fault and that I would have to pay for the repair. I was incredulous.

To add insult to injury they shipped the laptop back to me with the screen only partially reassembled and one of the screws cross threaded.

This is the worst form of customer support I have ever seen. I am so sorry that I ever bought a Dell laptop. I am even more sorry that I ever recommended their hardware to my customers and friends. No more Dell for me!

Be warned! If you buy a Dell expect poor customer service!

Good value, a reliable laptop but tempremental at times

Pros: Low price , good value for money, good build quality , all the essentials included, reliable

Cons: Poor battery life, not enough RAM , 256 RAM not upgradeable ,

Review: A good laptop for the money .i bought mine almost a year ago for £540. has given me little trouble apart from once when i had to reinstall XP. thankfully i lost no files touchwood! the issue of memory or the lack of it is a small issue but not a big problem . laptop takes on average 5 mins to start up i find that having no more than 7 shortcut icons on the desktop helps greatly in reducing start up time and improving performance.Battery life can be dissapointing so its best to treat laptop as a desktop and keep it plugged in battery barely lasts 40 mins before needing to be recharged. The lack of memory can sometimes be annoying as computer can lag for minutes at a time though this can be improved with a little tweaking .Overall a good laptop and more than adequate for most users, treat it nicely and it will be nice to you.just dont expect to play any games on it because it will just laugh at you and then go to sleep!

Save your money

Pros: cheap, has some useful software

Cons: really hot, hard drive went out after only 6 months of use, display gets dirty quickly

Review: This computer is a piece of junk. I bought it in November 2004 for help with my job (as a newspaper reporter). After only six months, the hard drive is going out and the battery life is awful. For a good battery, I wound up paying over $200 and it only runs maybe 2.5 hours. The computer gets very dirty very easily and frequently has issues running Windows XP Pro properly even though it's supposedly designed for it. The computer itself was extremely slow starting up with Trend Micro's Internet Security...so slow I ended up formatting the system and putting Windows back on. One other note, Dell charged me $812 for this laptop (excluding the $200 battery). I'm getting an eMachines M5310 for about $700 from tigerdirect.com and it's rating shows to work substantially better. Bottom line: Save your money for a laptop with more bang for the buck.

High frustration level

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: extremely sloooow...

Review: Husband purchased this computer so he could check e-mail etc while out of town. However, the $600 he paid for it was about $500 too much. It seems to be ok for word processing (although it didn't even come with Word) but little else. Often, while using it, it will "rest" while it recovers from the last small action you asked it to do (like dealing a new line of cards in a card game). Also, if left unattended for a few minutes, it will need a few moments to unfreeze, even thought it was not in standby mode. Because of this I have to keep myself from throwing it across the room everytime I use it!

You get what you pay for

Pros: Good keyboard, good memory, very good for a student

Cons: Battery life average, spare battery need, slow on start up and shut down.

Review: This is the ideal laptop for a student looking for something to surf the internet on, word process their assignments. Not recommended for gamers and the defult dvd rom drive is slow and noisy, does everything else well though. For good sound quality I recommened hooking it up to your HIFI. You have to take the plug around with you on most trips because of the battery life but the carry case is fantastic quality.

Like I said, you get what you pay for and this is very good value I think.

average, but barely

Pros: Low cost $700 after rebate as of 1/23/05. Got the bare minimum configuration (not many options provided), with a 1-yr warranty for $9 more. Performance is decent, but I was expecting better.

Cons: Must upgrade to max 512mb RAM, or else it really suffers, so I bought Dell 256mb for $47 and installed myself - easy. The screen has some issues, and the hard-drive makes an occasional "click" noise. The touchpad buttons feel a bit different than usual.

Pros: I got a refurbished laptop and it works very well with 512mb ram. Works great with Word and Internet. I use my cell phone as a portable modem, so I don't use the external wireless card at all. And customer service is Great, they replaced my scratched LC

Pros: As a student- PRICE, paid only about £570. You may be worried about speed/power but for most applications the 1000 is competent. (And in terms of development I'm able to run SQL server and VS.net without problems). My desktop is also Dell and the support

Cons: The battery. I bought mine with the standard battery and it states 2.5 hrs for most applications; the most I?ve got is about an hour and forty five. Perhaps the actual lifetime of the 1000 will be short, due to the limited features (e.g. single card slot)
