Dell's mainstream Inspiron 1100 is the cheapest notebook in the newly redesigned Inspiron family, but it's by no means the runt. In CNET Labs' tests, the system displayed the fastest performance and the longest battery life among its Celeron-based competitors. The sub-$800 price is also impressive. Of course, you can't expect everything from a laptop this cheap. The Inspiron 1100 lacks perks, such as integrated wireless. But all things considered, the Inspiron 1100 is one of the best mainstream notebooks on the market.

The secondary drive isn't swappable.

You can't mistake the Inspiron 1100's lineage: it sports the same "Venice blue and moonlight silver" case as all new Inspirons, including the 8600. In fact, the Inspiron 1100 shares its case design with the more expensive Inspiron 5100, which carries more cutting-edge components than the 1100.

With a 14.1-inch screen, the Inspiron 1100's case measures 12.9 by 10.8 by 1.7 inches and weighs 7.4 pounds, average for a mainstream notebook. There's also an optional 15-inch display that jacks up size and weight slightly. You won't want to travel a lot with either one, but taking them on occasional jaunts won't do you in, either.

The keyboard is wide and firm.
The Inspiron 1100's touchpad and mouse buttons are big and smooth.
Large cases such as this often house two internal secondary storage drives, such as a floppy and a CD-RW. But the Inspiron 1100 offers just one fixed (that is, not swappable) secondary drive; you'll have to choose from CD, DVD, CD-RW, and DVD/CD-RW drives when you order. In the growing trend toward kissing floppies good-bye, Dell offers an external USB floppy drive only (for $49). The Inspiron 1100's extra pounds lie in its huge 14.8V, 6,450mAh battery. As CNET Labs' battery tests show, the cell keeps this system running for four hours, despite its power-draining, desktop Celeron processor. But we're not wild about the loud fan that's needed to cool down this hot processor.

The Inspiron 1100's ample case allows room for a wide and firm keyboard, a spacious touchpad, and two big mouse buttons. There's also plenty of space for ports and slots, although the budget-minded Inspiron 1100 includes just the bare minimum. A 56K modem port sits on the right edge, and Ethernet, VGA, S-Video-out, and two USB 2.0 ports are spread out across the back edge. The left edge offers headphone and microphone ports, plus one Type II PC Card slot. The front edge features two speakers that a produce more vibrant sound than that of most mainstream notebooks. The Inspiron 1100's base configuration gives average users just about everything they need for work or play, including a 2GHz desktop Celeron processor; 256MB of fast 266MHz DDR SDRAM; a 14.1-inch screen with a native 1,024x768 (XGA) resolution; a CD drive; and a 20GB, 4,200rpm hard drive. For various prices, you can choose higher-end specs such as a 2.4GHz desktop Pentium 4 CPU; up to 1GB of memory; a DVD, CD-RW, or DVD/CD-RW combo drive; a 40GB, 5,400rpm hard drive; and a 15-inch XGA display. All configurations come with the same graphics chip: a 64BM Intel 845G. Our evaluation system shipped with a 2GHz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, a DVD drive, and a 14.1-inch screen.

The big battery is easy to unlatch and replace.
The Inspiron 1100's new design is an eye-catcher.
While we applaud this overall spec selection, we can't overlook one conspicuous absence: internal wireless networking (Wi-Fi). Most of Dell's new Inspirons, such as the 5100, include two dual-band, 802.11a/b antennae and mini-PCI Wi-Fi cards. However, the Inspiron 1100 lacks both the antennae and the mini-PCI cards. The only way to get Wi-Fi is to add it via a Type II PC Card--and use up your only available card slot. This setup means one more removable part to worry about and gives you only half the signal strength from the PC Card's single antenna.

Bundled software is understandably limited in this value-conscious system. The Inspiron 1100 ships with one of two operating system choices: Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro. The system comes standard with the WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Intuit's Quicken 2002 New User Edition, but you can order it with more full-featured office suites, such as Microsoft Office XP--for extra cash, of course. The software bundle includes Dell's Jukebox, MovieStudio, and PictureStudio apps for editing music, movies, and images. The Inspiron 1100 was the fastest system in our small test group, beating its nearest competitor, the HP Pavilion ze4200, by one point. The Dell also handily beat another Celeron-based notebook, the Gateway 400E. While the Inspiron 1100's first-place rank is impressive, and it will excel in most tasks you throw at it, we had hoped that it would show even more speed. The victory margin between the Dell and the HP might have been wider because the HP uses an ATI graphics chip that borrows video RAM from main memory. The Dell's graphics chip is independent.

The Inspiron 1100's four-hour score is the longest battery life we've seen in a Celeron-based system, and it even bested a couple of Pentium M systems--the new battery-life champs. To measure mobile application performance and battery life, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's MobileMark2002. MobileMark measures both application performance and battery life concurrently using a number of popular applications (Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Excel 2002, Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, Microsoft Outlook 2002, Netscape Communicator 6.0, WinZip Computing WinZip 8.0, McAfee VirusScan 5.13, Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1, and Macromedia Flash 5.0).

You can increase the support through a variety of options, including up to four years of onsite service and accidental damage protection for up to $458. While we might recommend a big service-and-support increase for a more expensive system, you probably won't have a laptop this cheap for more than a few years, so one or two years of support should be plenty.

You can also always help yourself via Dell's stellar support software and Web site, which both provide helpful troubleshooting tips and FAQs. Also, the hard-copy setup manual is complete and easy to follow.

Reliable and Long-Lasting Computer

Pros: Last a long time, inexpensive, reliable

Cons: very little storage space, cannot burn a disk, slow at times, very little RAM

Review: I have had this computer for around 7 years. In that 7 years I have had many ups and downs with this computer. One problem I just recently had was that my screen would go blank and i would have to manually turn off the computer. One great thing is the fact that it has lasted me for 7 years. How many computers can do that! Another problem is not with the computer itself but the software is very out of date and the software is very expensive to buy. So if you need a computer you can trust to last a long time, this is the computer

$1,250 Garbage!!!

Pros: Absolutely nothing

Cons: Where do I begin???

Review: I bought this piece of garbage back in 2003 for $1,250 and from the minute I started using it I've had nothing but problems with it. Super slow, freezes up, battery does NOT last 3 hours like it claims, low memory, can't use with broadband internet, heavy - I could go on and on. Customer service is a joke - based in India and you will wait on the phone for 45 minutes to either not get your problem solved or just get hung up on. This laptop has been basically useless from the beginning and has served only as a "typing" computer to type documents on in Word for when I'm in my bed. Other than that, it usually collects dust from sitting underneath my bed. I do all of my other computer stuff on my wonderful, fast, reliable Gateway desktop. I will NEVER buy a Dell computer again and as soon as I have money for a Gateway laptop, I'm going to stomp all over this, smash it with a hammer, and then throw it into the trash wher it belongs. After all, that's what Dell is - trash.

My Inspiron Brought Me Smoothly Into the Digital Age

Pros: It's reliable--I've had no problems

Cons: Heavy, and now too slow for my technology needs

Review: I bought my Inspiron 1100 back in the fall of 2002. At that time, I primarily used it for Word, Excel, and internet projects, so get-up-and-go-wise, it was every thing I needed. EXCEPT for its weight, it has been a great little computer and I've never had any problems with it with everyday use, and I didn't even mind hauling the heavy battery around when I needed that extra oomph for work on the run. It will definitely build those biceps if you carry it around much, though.

However, over the years, as I moved confidently forward with my digital imaging projects and started investing in 10+ megapixel cameras (Canon, of course) and video, memory upgrades were a must, and let's not even talk about how McAfee boggs it down. I am finally thinking about actually getting a tower to serve as my main computer and only using my Inspiron for its intended purpose--as a laptop. (Yes, my Inspiron has been my only computer since 2002.)

In all fairness, considering it's trying to keep up with a 500 gig external hard drive; an all-in-one printer; high-speed cable; many dense software programs, such as Photoshop CS3, etc., it really is my little work horse. I couldn't be happier with it, but as I always say--technology gives and it taketh away. As technology leaps forward, we have to take the jump with it if we're going to remain functional in business and get the most out of our play time. DVD and Blue Ray are no longer optional, and although Alzheimer's seems like a plausible diagnosis, it is simply that I've placed unearthly demands on my faithful Inspiron while I let its processor and memory components lag behind my computing needs. In short: If you're looking for a good computer for word processing and spreadsheet applications and don't have to trek too far with it, you'll be a happy camper.

Dell Inspiron overview after more than 3 years

Pros: Cheap, Light weight, easy to use, smooth and big mouse, don't get crash like other laptop, good support from Dell

Cons: no wireless built in, fan is loud, not many feature like other laptop

Review: If you get a heat problem? Why don't you try to clean out the dust from the heatsink. Laptop just like a car, if you dont know how to take care it, it will crash down and over heat like car doesn't have good motor oil in it. People just don't understand about using their computer so most of the laptop can't be using in maximum pontential. I saw that computer crash down due to many reason but mostly is from the owner. Well, every laptop will has it problem but the thing is will the owner will able to find out the bring the maximum pontential for the system?

It's not a Toshiba, but not bad.

Pros: Good processor, easy to expand.

Cons: Tends to get bogged down. Standard HDD small, standard ram small

Review: Not bad. Well-deserving of a 7, but no higher. I use a cooling base to keep the unit from over-heating and it works perfectly. Likely would work better using Windows 2000 than XP Home.

Decent for the price but slow and very hot

Pros: price, general reliability

Cons: battery life is VERY SHORT (<1 hour for me), fast as a snail without memory upgrades

Review: I got one when I started college. It's been durable and reliable, but I've had to upgrade the memory to get anything done on it. The battery life is pathetic. On a full charge, mine lasts about an hour. This effectively renders into a desktop without the upgrade potential. I would not recommend buying this as there are much better notebooks out there for not much more.

I've used it for FOUR years! What more can you ask for?

Pros: solid keyboard (hasn't broken once), has s-video output, lasts long

Cons: loud fan, small hard drive

Review: Overall, I wouldn't say it's great - but because it's lasted so long - really a miracle. I've had to reformat two times. There was once a time when I needed to have an actual fan on it for it to work well - but a good vacumm or duster blower into the fan helps too. Solid laptop...I'm using it right now.

My ethernet card busted last month though...so using an external one.

10 tonne time bomb

Pros: You can drop it off a high building at watch ot woth pleasure

Cons: The fact that you pay for this excuse for a laptop

Review: The inspiron 1100 and all related (11xx, 51xx) are not actually laptops because they burn you if you put them on your lap. This worthless excuse for a laptop has been nothing but trouble. It was the first and last Dell product my family will ever have. It worked well enough for a year even with overheating problems from day 1 and then everthing went downhill from there. two keys have terrible response on the keyboard and the pcmcia slot doesnt even work at all. the dvd drive almost never recognises discs and some how the screw came out and it fall out if you tilt it. Even in Ireland we had overheating problems where it would just shutdown. Once we brought it to France on holidays, it burnt out within a week. The motherboard is dead and how conveniently after the warrenty expired.

Have had it for 3+ years

Pros: Reliable Good Speed

Cons: Overheats (not often) Graphics

Review: I have had this laptop for over 3 years now after having it for 2 is when it started over heating but it only does it if I try doing somthing like playing a "good" game or watching movies for an extended period of time, other than over heating the graphics suck you can play games in full screen only if the game lets you choose to view it at its full res screen, all in all after having it for 3 years it is still going great wouldn't recomend it to any one now though because you can get better laptops for same price or less, would recomend dell though I just placed an order to replace this laptop with an E1505

Lap Warmer

Pros: Keeps your lap warm in the winter.

Cons: Keeps your lap warm in the winter.

Review: Let me first start off by saying that this was/is my first laptop ever purchased. So, for all of you who have schlepped your notebooks around from coffee shop to coffee shop for the better part of the 90's, you have every right to judge my opinion on this machine. When I bought this computer in 2003, it nearly outperformed my then 3 year old desktop. Except for the fact that the 1100 has absolutely no RAM in it whatsoever. If I were to do it all over again, I would have maxed out the 1100 as much as possible, but then it wouldn't have been the cheapest machine on the market...

So, a few years later the 1100 is good for almost nothing. It overheats on a daily basis, and I constantly have to balance the machine on one thigh so my leg doesn't cover up the only fan. And I can't even put it flush on a table since there's still not enough clearance to keep it from overheating. A pesky design flaw has turned acceptable performance into an outright 3 year nuisance. Overheating is a design flaw that Dell should have never signed off on, which is why I have little faith in the rest of the company's products. Honestly, because of my experience with this product, I'll be getting a MacBook Pro next.

Not a bad deal for the money

Pros: price, decent battery life

Cons: Celeron is slow, loud fan, dogs down easily

What You Would Expect for the $$$$

Pros: great screen, good keyboard, price

Cons: one resoulution, one PC slot, loud, HOT, touchpad

Review: My wifes computer, predates me in her life, going on 2 years fine, never an issue. Yes it runs hot and loud with a fan sounding like a jet turbine at times. I'm used to my old Thinkpad T23 and there is no comparison between what was a $2500 laptop new and what was a $1000 laptop new, anyone who thought there would be was foolish, I actually still prefer my T23 but use hers frequently as well. The screen is nice clean, bright, but only 1024x768, the keyboard is nice but not my T23, the touchpad has some funky odd drift to it but is still useable and as this is mostly "a desktop" is replaced more often than not by a mouse, the battery life is exceptional not that is ever is put to the test, it's not the lightest machine by far, but I toted a luggable brick around in the day, so who cares, no wireless but a Belkin card does just dandy even if in the only slot, she doesn't need it for anything else, all in all just what one would expect, a bundle of compromises for the price she paid. It is what is is, occasionally a bit more, occasionally a bit less.

Very good, just not for gaming

Pros: Sturdy, comfortable keyboard, cheap, simple to use, solid battery life, long lasting

Cons: only 10/100 mbps ethernet, integrated graphics, low RAM capacity, low Hard Draive capacity, disk drive is terribly loud

Review: My Inspiron 1100 still works, since December of 2003. I can play Half-Life 2 and The Sims 2, but at a terrible video quality. Basically no lag on HL2. World of Warcraft is pretty slow. Let me tell you, I have a habit of tapping the computer like a snare drum, and it still performs well. Just don't play HL2: Deathmatch or Counter Strike: Source. I bought a D-Link DGL-4100 to see if it would improve... nope. Even with gamefuel enabled and game priority (by the way, any useful tips on maximizing performance with the GameFuel settings). So if anyone says: It will barely last a year, ignore, because mine has lasted more than 2 years. P.S. I'm upgrading to a DELL XPS M170 for gaming. Oh, and my system specs:

Great for the price

Pros: Great price, durable

Cons: Hot, noisy, only 2 USB ports

Review: I've owned mine for well over a year and have put it through a lot. It has been running (not in a suspend state but full power) 24/7 for the last 14 months. I've noticed that in my early verion there was a few bugs here and there, primarilly how resolutions outside of its native 1024x768 do not render in the full screen but this problem was easily corrected with a BIOS update. The display hinge clutches could be a little stronger, I've noticed that if you pick the unit up quickly the display will change angle. In use the screen stays put though, it does not bounce and move like other models I have used.

My keyboard suffered some damage (ie: spilling a drink into it, which caused me to lurch to grab it then dropping the unit and ripping half the keys off in the process) but it was easily replaced and quite cheaply on ebay. Considering the circumstances, I would not attribute its failure to any fault of the unit. It is a nice keyboard with good response and feel. The layout is good and the keys which are used most are easily reached. The touchpad is great and offers some hidden features I stumbled upon one day. The far right side will scroll pages if you slide your finger across it right. It is kinda tricky to do so I just rely on the arrow keys to scroll.

With that being said, the unit has taken a beating, being transported to school and work every day. It's been through many temperature and humidity extremes and through the stress of being tossed in a bag and lugged around everywhere. I bought the unit with the upgraded extended battery and it is used wirelessly and just passed around and left sitting, many times on carpet and other less than ideal conditions. (AKA, lazy college kids apartment. ie: stuff piled on top, left upside down, sideways behind the couch and evereywhere else aside from on my desk.)

The unit does run hot, I bought this unit to replace my Gateway Solo 9550 which was a total piece of garbage and also ran considerably hot and I did not think much of it. I've noticed to keep it cool, make sure the rubber 'feet' stay on the bottom to allow the unit to sit higher and get proper airflow. I've never had an issue with the unit overheating and all in all would not call it a problem at all. The fan is multi-speed which I like. My previous laptop relied on passive cooling until the fan was turned on full tilt and was louder than this unit. It is somewhat noisy but it doesn't bother me that much.

The lack of internal wireless isn't all that much of an issue. I considered removing the modem which I have never used and putting in a generic wireless card but I came to find out that the unit does not have a standard mini-PCI slot like most notebooks which is where I got snagged. This unit uses a small square shaped connector. For now I will stay with a PCMCIA card sticking out, cheap and effective solution.

The DVD drive was not all that impressive, at times it would get hot and then fail to read discs. My prior Gateway laptop which also had a toshiba drive in it did this as well. I decided to replace the unit with a DVD/CD-RW Combo anyways to which I can say was a very simple and straightforward process. The fascia fit on perfectly and everything lines up correctly. For how cheap these unit sell for, it is well worth it to just upgrade anyways.

The system was obviously made to be a cookie-cutter solution to those who want a laptop cheap and fast. It came loaded up with a billion programs which I did not need or want and it took some time removing them. This is the only way they can sell the thing so cheap is to put a bunch of garbage on it to try and make you buy more software. Prime examples are the virus scan which is a properitary dell version which probably gives them a cut when you pay to extend the subscription.

For those who run linux, Fedora core 2 ran on this system flawlessly and installed without much of a hitch. There was the problem with the small video but an argument in one of the GRUB configuration files combined with the BIOS update fixed the problem.

Your all whiners, 'tis a great deal.

Pros: Let's see, COST ME 500 USD for a 2.4 GHZ, 1 GIG ram, 60 HD, DVD-ROM/CD-RW!!!! Whine about the "no wireless" all you want, but do you realise for about 35 USD, you can buy a new wireless card off ebay.

Good laptop

Pros: Reliable, easy access to memory slots, good keyboard

Cons: Integrated graphics, fan can be loud

Review: I first got this laptop in June 2003, and I've never had problems with it. It's proven be reliable, and that's all you can ask for. Mine is a Intel Celeron 2.0 GhZ with 256 MB of RAM, though I am bumping up to 512 soon. Unlike some laptops, the memory is easy to access on here. It supports up to 1 GB of memory.

Great for the money..

Pros: stable, simple and capable

Cons: small hdd capacity, low ram

Review: This computer is working great for the money.

I have used it for more than two years. Its power management is surprisingly stable. Its keyboard and touchpad works great. Its design is simple and solid. Many users sometimes criticize this machine, without considering that this is below $800 laptop.

This computer is calm, compared with other major computer maker's basic model. If you upgrade BIOS, its fan works more often so that overheating should be prevented. Still, the noise level is acceptable.

I'm replacing its memory and hdd because it's too small. FYI, this laptop uses 9.5mm, 2.5" hdd and 266 DDR PC-2010 SODIMM Ram.. It took me some time to find this information. I wish good luck for your laptop searching...

not for the noob; get ready to fix everything yourself

Pros: basic machine seems solid, OS is a hoover(think vacuum cleaner function).

Cons: extremely poor support, no serial port, no floppy(think boot options)

Review: I was once a noob. Then I got the Inspiron 1100. First it wouldn't network. No support from dell-"not our problem", so I learned all about IPCONFIG, DHCP, tricking the network by making multiple XP user accounts, and how XP Home has hoover-like qualities when you plug a NIC cable into the jack, etc. and gradually learned how to fix it. Then I upgraded to SP2, lost networking and internet again. Then on startup one day, "hal.dll missing" error ie windows wouldn't boot at all!, rescued my data with Knoppix ISO CD, Then used it to wipe the HD, made more partitions, put on XP PRO, dual boot with LINUX (so I can quickly rescue my XP Office data if XP should crap out again and it's simply way more fun), learned how to upgrade the bios and drivers, replaced memory, got a USB to Serial adapter cable, USB floppy, fan control software, USB 12-in-one media card reader, upgraded to P4, and voila, I'm no longer a noob, laptop works like a charm, and I got a great education on how to make a tiny little laptop into a very powerful tool...probably would have been quicker to just spend more $$ on something better in the first place, but then I wouldn't have that education now would I?... good luck

For OVERHEATING comments how to solve

Pros: Keyboard, touchpad, screen, sturdy, easy to handle, good value

Cons: heavy, hot, the fan not enough

Review: Shut down computer properly. Take vacuum machine and suck the dust from the fan openings out properly. Do it every 3-4 weeks. Then the fan runs slower and machine faster without overheating too much.
I am not from DELL. Otherwise great value, still after more than 1 year. If you don't care about the warm keyboad, then still a good value. Nice design, great keyboard and touchpad and screen bright. I would give it 10 but I deduct 3 points for the overheating problems, weight and thickness.
Updated
The overheating problem didn't go away but it staed here. I search internet. There was a lawsuit in the US for Inspiron 5100?? I believe. Dell lost the suit. (search Wikipedia for inspiron problems.) Users claimed their laptops are overheated. Similar lawsuit has been launched for Inspiron 1100. The case is that Dell knew laptop cooling system is not working properly but they continued to sell it. You might want to sign up with the layer for this lawsuit. In case Dell looses the suit, they will have to componsate the claimants. I think it's too late to sign as claimant, but you should know your rights agains Dell if Dell compensates owners. Search Google for more info. This suite is still running, started last year.

solid with great screen and keyboard

Pros: resolution; unbreakable circa 5/05; relative speed

Cons: hurts thumb joint; classic computer noise though minimal;

Review: The mouse touchpad has some kind of magnetic pull that is hurting my hand; has anyone found that? Debilitating my hand.
As one user said, the screen is the best feature, bright, clear remarkable resolution; plus it stays dust free, don't have to use special cloth much. Perfect keyboard, I swear I type faster, really good keys. Plus the touchpad options make commands instantaneous, may be MS Windows. Weight doesn't matter if one is a man or woman who lifts weights. Also, if you hit 'Fn' 'Suspend' it goes into save mode and even unplugged will keep all battery power in that mode. The speakers aren't great but not bad. It's like a car, can't be made of paper, I'm glad I don't have to think about the expensiveness of it all the time. One just has to know how to use it, haven't had the overheating and shutoff since the first day. That was awful. Just happened in the beginning, got the comnputer from someone else and inherited all the problems and bad use, spyware. Keep all the excess spyware off, along with anti virus. After it became my computer, just laptop, no extraneous stuff, then stopped the FREEZING which led to OVERHEATING. Was FREEZING every 20 minutes!! Then the heating and I didn't know on first day that one had to hold down the shutoff key for this. My statinary computer had no problems in 6 or 7 years. So if you can maintain a computer, then this will last decades. I like the full screen and the noise is expected and comforting in the background, so it's a computer not living; a college mate kept a huge fan in the window to block out other noise, that was like a propeller plane. Warranty is 3 years.
Updated
It has speed, in a way not related to the high speed connection, if possible. Yeah, we have a really good computer, though people use technology, such as smaller plastic laptops, to advance themselves, preening with technology, if one can, showing their earning power or just showing off, so that Google yielded stuff about not wanting to take our computer in public.

The keyboard on other computers I even think of getting is flimsy, this is well made with advanced springs. Now with thumb drives all we need is maybe no disk drive. That and compressing the overall machinery that makes it run and better batteries.

Cons: No parallel, few other ports. No 3 1/2 floppy (big deal...) Resolution only goes to 1024X768. Poor speakers, no option for microphone... Very little RAM.

Pros: Cheap, has all the things you need for office work.

Cons: Poor quality of components and repair. We bought 2 and a network card died on one in a month. It took over 3 hours on the phone to get a repair authorization. Tech support is offshore and the level of understanding is low, hold times were very long, in t

Good computer for the price.

Pros: -Good, inexpensive portable computer. -Battery lasts a LOONG time even when playing DVDs. -The screen is clear and sharp, and it preforms most basic tasks without any problem. -Awesome web surfer. Get download speeds nearly 2mb/s faster than my deskt

Cons: -Computer feels a little flimsy. -Despite the 2ghz Celeron, 256mb ram, 5200rpm HDD, and 64mb Intel Extreme Graphics, this laptop gets it's butt kicked by my old clunker desktop in the area of gaming. Don't expect to be able to play GTAIII during history

Don't Make My Mistake

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought a Dell Inspiron 1100 P4 2ghz processor,cdrw,128mb ram etc... The machine seemed like a good deal for the price. So far I have not been overly impressed. The keyboard is cheap. No serial ports so my palm pilot cannot be hooked up to it being it is the older serial interface one. Also I sent Dell an email about adding an upgrade and was told no even if I was willing to pay for it. Plus this unit has a standard 14.1 display and in the store all the laptops have 15inch displays and cdrw/dvd combo. Dell gives you a free upgrade to cdrw only.Isn't that nice a dvd/cdrw is almost a standard in all off the shelf machines get real Dell. Even the under $800 models I have seen in the store have 256mb in ram and 30 or 40gb hardrives.Let's guess dell gives a 20gb drive standard and 128mb ram. The worst part is that I had returned a HP Pavillion 4300 series to get this laptop because I tought performance would be much better. NOT TRUE at all this unit is nothing great and with it's standard 128mb in ram it runs like a dog. Be prepared to spend for memory and not just any memory I had to try 3 different makers until I found one the dell worked with.Don't buy it from them they overcharge for it.Hope you do not like listening to music it's speakers are BAD! Overall I would say that this unit is exactly what you pay for cheap. With dell you are only buying a name. Oh and there tech support site is of no help either. I hope you like your new laptop returning it requires a 15% restocking fee. Why should Dell care if you like it they make the restocking fee either way. Trust me go to circuit city 14 days with no restocking fee. Check the store first and then check dell. I can tell you what you get from dell but I am not allowed to use those kind of words here.

Don't buy from Dell

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought an Inspiron 1100 for $1400. My first laptop, I’m not all that impressed though for the price. Right out of the box, it had a broken pixel. They say you can send it back but who really wants to do that? It doesn't bother me much. Ergonomics are alright, ****** keyboard though. The layout doesn’t bother me, with the windows button in the upper right corner and all (you get used to it) but when you type, sometimes your fingers catch under the keys. It is very annoying. Touchpad is alright. The unit itself is very heavy, although it is still more portable than a desktop unit. I was not impressed too much with it though. For $1400 I got a 2.4 gig Pentium 4, 64mb shared memory card. 512mb of ram, dvd/cdrw combo. It doesn’t run noticeably faster than my AMD XP 1.67 gig. Excellent battery life, but the laptop isn’t worth $1400. My next one is going to be from pricewatch, I found one better than this one for about $800. Stay away from Dell or any other laptop retail.

Needs SXGA+

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First off, this laptop is a great buy for the average user. I was looking for a replacement for my Inspiron 7500, which has proudly served me for the last 3 years. The I1100 is ok -- also a brick. Good battery life and fairly fast. I have the P4-2G (non-celeron). I also upgraded the memory to 1 GB once it got here. But, I'm sending it back. Two complaints: 1) it's slower than my wive's I2650, which has a 1.3G Celeron and 512MB ram; and 2) it doesn't have SXGA+, only XGA. My I7500 has SXGA+ and the difference between the two monitors is very noticable, next to each other. Dell is great and I'm getting a difference one. Oh, one other complaint: Hey Dell, please hire tech support folks who can speak English and have something more than a 10th grade education. My 4 year old is more helpful solving my computer problems than those folks. Grrr! But again, Dell is best, just most of their techies are idiots!

Good cheap laptop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought the P4 2GHz, 14 inch screen, CD-RW/DVD, 128 mb ram, 30 GB disk, extra battery. Special deal for only $744 plus tax (free shipping). Added another 256MB ram for $40 from Crucial (much cheaper than Dell), which made a big difference. (Win XP is a dog with only 128MB). Also added a $20 Siemens wireless card and now I'm surfing and downloading all over the house. Too heavy to carry on frequent travel, but that's not what I got it for. Battery life is great.
