With a 14.1-inch screen, the Inspiron 1100's case measures 12.9 by 10.8 by 1.7 inches and weighs 7.4 pounds, average for a mainstream notebook. There's also an optional 15-inch display that jacks up size and weight slightly. You won't want to travel a lot with either one, but taking them on occasional jaunts won't do you in, either.

The Inspiron 1100's ample case allows room for a wide and firm keyboard, a spacious touchpad, and two big mouse buttons. There's also plenty of space for ports and slots, although the budget-minded Inspiron 1100 includes just the bare minimum. A 56K modem port sits on the right edge, and Ethernet, VGA, S-Video-out, and two USB 2.0 ports are spread out across the back edge. The left edge offers headphone and microphone ports, plus one Type II PC Card slot. The front edge features two speakers that a produce more vibrant sound than that of most mainstream notebooks. The Inspiron 1100's base configuration gives average users just about everything they need for work or play, including a 2GHz desktop Celeron processor; 256MB of fast 266MHz DDR SDRAM; a 14.1-inch screen with a native 1,024x768 (XGA) resolution; a CD drive; and a 20GB, 4,200rpm hard drive. For various prices, you can choose higher-end specs such as a 2.4GHz desktop Pentium 4 CPU; up to 1GB of memory; a DVD, CD-RW, or DVD/CD-RW combo drive; a 40GB, 5,400rpm hard drive; and a 15-inch XGA display. All configurations come with the same graphics chip: a 64BM Intel 845G. Our evaluation system shipped with a 2GHz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, a DVD drive, and a 14.1-inch screen.

| The Inspiron 1100's new design is an eye-catcher. |
Bundled software is understandably limited in this value-conscious system. The Inspiron 1100 ships with one of two operating system choices: Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro. The system comes standard with the WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Intuit's Quicken 2002 New User Edition, but you can order it with more full-featured office suites, such as Microsoft Office XP--for extra cash, of course. The software bundle includes Dell's Jukebox, MovieStudio, and PictureStudio apps for editing music, movies, and images. The Inspiron 1100 was the fastest system in our small test group, beating its nearest competitor, the HP Pavilion ze4200, by one point. The Dell also handily beat another Celeron-based notebook, the Gateway 400E. While the Inspiron 1100's first-place rank is impressive, and it will excel in most tasks you throw at it, we had hoped that it would show even more speed. The victory margin between the Dell and the HP might have been wider because the HP uses an ATI graphics chip that borrows video RAM from main memory. The Dell's graphics chip is independent.

You can increase the support through a variety of options, including up to four years of onsite service and accidental damage protection for up to $458. While we might recommend a big service-and-support increase for a more expensive system, you probably won't have a laptop this cheap for more than a few years, so one or two years of support should be plenty.
You can also always help yourself via Dell's stellar support software and Web site, which both provide helpful troubleshooting tips and FAQs. Also, the hard-copy setup manual is complete and easy to follow.

My Inspiron Brought Me Smoothly Into the Digital Age
Pros: It's reliable--I've had no problems
Cons: Heavy, and now too slow for my technology needs
However, over the years, as I moved confidently forward with my digital imaging projects and started investing in 10+ megapixel cameras (Canon, of course) and video, memory upgrades were a must, and let's not even talk about how McAfee boggs it down. I am finally thinking about actually getting a tower to serve as my main computer and only using my Inspiron for its intended purpose--as a laptop. (Yes, my Inspiron has been my only computer since 2002.)
In all fairness, considering it's trying to keep up with a 500 gig external hard drive; an all-in-one printer; high-speed cable; many dense software programs, such as Photoshop CS3, etc., it really is my little work horse. I couldn't be happier with it, but as I always say--technology gives and it taketh away. As technology leaps forward, we have to take the jump with it if we're going to remain functional in business and get the most out of our play time. DVD and Blue Ray are no longer optional, and although Alzheimer's seems like a plausible diagnosis, it is simply that I've placed unearthly demands on my faithful Inspiron while I let its processor and memory components lag behind my computing needs. In short: If you're looking for a good computer for word processing and spreadsheet applications and don't have to trek too far with it, you'll be a happy camper.

Lap Warmer
Pros: Keeps your lap warm in the winter.
Cons: Keeps your lap warm in the winter.
So, a few years later the 1100 is good for almost nothing. It overheats on a daily basis, and I constantly have to balance the machine on one thigh so my leg doesn't cover up the only fan. And I can't even put it flush on a table since there's still not enough clearance to keep it from overheating. A pesky design flaw has turned acceptable performance into an outright 3 year nuisance. Overheating is a design flaw that Dell should have never signed off on, which is why I have little faith in the rest of the company's products. Honestly, because of my experience with this product, I'll be getting a MacBook Pro next.

Great for the price
Pros: Great price, durable
Cons: Hot, noisy, only 2 USB ports
My keyboard suffered some damage (ie: spilling a drink into it, which caused me to lurch to grab it then dropping the unit and ripping half the keys off in the process) but it was easily replaced and quite cheaply on ebay. Considering the circumstances, I would not attribute its failure to any fault of the unit. It is a nice keyboard with good response and feel. The layout is good and the keys which are used most are easily reached. The touchpad is great and offers some hidden features I stumbled upon one day. The far right side will scroll pages if you slide your finger across it right. It is kinda tricky to do so I just rely on the arrow keys to scroll.
With that being said, the unit has taken a beating, being transported to school and work every day. It's been through many temperature and humidity extremes and through the stress of being tossed in a bag and lugged around everywhere. I bought the unit with the upgraded extended battery and it is used wirelessly and just passed around and left sitting, many times on carpet and other less than ideal conditions. (AKA, lazy college kids apartment. ie: stuff piled on top, left upside down, sideways behind the couch and evereywhere else aside from on my desk.)
The unit does run hot, I bought this unit to replace my Gateway Solo 9550 which was a total piece of garbage and also ran considerably hot and I did not think much of it. I've noticed to keep it cool, make sure the rubber 'feet' stay on the bottom to allow the unit to sit higher and get proper airflow. I've never had an issue with the unit overheating and all in all would not call it a problem at all. The fan is multi-speed which I like. My previous laptop relied on passive cooling until the fan was turned on full tilt and was louder than this unit. It is somewhat noisy but it doesn't bother me that much.
The lack of internal wireless isn't all that much of an issue. I considered removing the modem which I have never used and putting in a generic wireless card but I came to find out that the unit does not have a standard mini-PCI slot like most notebooks which is where I got snagged. This unit uses a small square shaped connector. For now I will stay with a PCMCIA card sticking out, cheap and effective solution.
The DVD drive was not all that impressive, at times it would get hot and then fail to read discs. My prior Gateway laptop which also had a toshiba drive in it did this as well. I decided to replace the unit with a DVD/CD-RW Combo anyways to which I can say was a very simple and straightforward process. The fascia fit on perfectly and everything lines up correctly. For how cheap these unit sell for, it is well worth it to just upgrade anyways.
The system was obviously made to be a cookie-cutter solution to those who want a laptop cheap and fast. It came loaded up with a billion programs which I did not need or want and it took some time removing them. This is the only way they can sell the thing so cheap is to put a bunch of garbage on it to try and make you buy more software. Prime examples are the virus scan which is a properitary dell version which probably gives them a cut when you pay to extend the subscription.
For those who run linux, Fedora core 2 ran on this system flawlessly and installed without much of a hitch. There was the problem with the small video but an argument in one of the GRUB configuration files combined with the BIOS update fixed the problem.

Your all whiners, 'tis a great deal.
Pros: Let's see, COST ME 500 USD for a 2.4 GHZ, 1 GIG ram, 60 HD, DVD-ROM/CD-RW!!!! Whine about the "no wireless" all you want, but do you realise for about 35 USD, you can buy a new wireless card off ebay.
Cons: design = blah, size = blah... that's it, just the physical.

Great for the money..
Pros: stable, simple and capable
Cons: small hdd capacity, low ram
I have used it for more than two years. Its power management is surprisingly stable. Its keyboard and touchpad works great. Its design is simple and solid. Many users sometimes criticize this machine, without considering that this is below $800 laptop.
This computer is calm, compared with other major computer maker's basic model. If you upgrade BIOS, its fan works more often so that overheating should be prevented. Still, the noise level is acceptable.
I'm replacing its memory and hdd because it's too small. FYI, this laptop uses 9.5mm, 2.5" hdd and 266 DDR PC-2010 SODIMM Ram.. It took me some time to find this information. I wish good luck for your laptop searching...

For OVERHEATING comments how to solve
Pros: Keyboard, touchpad, screen, sturdy, easy to handle, good value
Cons: heavy, hot, the fan not enough
I am not from DELL. Otherwise great value, still after more than 1 year. If you don't care about the warm keyboad, then still a good value. Nice design, great keyboard and touchpad and screen bright. I would give it 10 but I deduct 3 points for the overheating problems, weight and thickness.
The overheating problem didn't go away but it staed here. I search internet. There was a lawsuit in the US for Inspiron 5100?? I believe. Dell lost the suit. (search Wikipedia for inspiron problems.) Users claimed their laptops are overheated. Similar lawsuit has been launched for Inspiron 1100. The case is that Dell knew laptop cooling system is not working properly but they continued to sell it. You might want to sign up with the layer for this lawsuit. In case Dell looses the suit, they will have to componsate the claimants. I think it's too late to sign as claimant, but you should know your rights agains Dell if Dell compensates owners. Search Google for more info. This suite is still running, started last year.

solid with great screen and keyboard
Pros: resolution; unbreakable circa 5/05; relative speed
Cons: hurts thumb joint; classic computer noise though minimal;
As one user said, the screen is the best feature, bright, clear remarkable resolution; plus it stays dust free, don't have to use special cloth much. Perfect keyboard, I swear I type faster, really good keys. Plus the touchpad options make commands instantaneous, may be MS Windows. Weight doesn't matter if one is a man or woman who lifts weights. Also, if you hit 'Fn' 'Suspend' it goes into save mode and even unplugged will keep all battery power in that mode. The speakers aren't great but not bad. It's like a car, can't be made of paper, I'm glad I don't have to think about the expensiveness of it all the time. One just has to know how to use it, haven't had the overheating and shutoff since the first day. That was awful. Just happened in the beginning, got the comnputer from someone else and inherited all the problems and bad use, spyware. Keep all the excess spyware off, along with anti virus. After it became my computer, just laptop, no extraneous stuff, then stopped the FREEZING which led to OVERHEATING. Was FREEZING every 20 minutes!! Then the heating and I didn't know on first day that one had to hold down the shutoff key for this. My statinary computer had no problems in 6 or 7 years. So if you can maintain a computer, then this will last decades. I like the full screen and the noise is expected and comforting in the background, so it's a computer not living; a college mate kept a huge fan in the window to block out other noise, that was like a propeller plane. Warranty is 3 years.
It has speed, in a way not related to the high speed connection, if possible. Yeah, we have a really good computer, though people use technology, such as smaller plastic laptops, to advance themselves, preening with technology, if one can, showing their earning power or just showing off, so that Google yielded stuff about not wanting to take our computer in public.
The keyboard on other computers I even think of getting is flimsy, this is well made with advanced springs. Now with thumb drives all we need is maybe no disk drive. That and compressing the overall machinery that makes it run and better batteries.

Cons: The motherboard on my 1100 died in six months and had to be replaced. Dell out sources their customer service to India and the Philippines. Communication with ESL was difficult at best. Dell repaired it under warrantee, but then shipped the computer to

good for people like me
Pros: Good for students or other people who want a computer that can hold music and lots of downloads, plus it is cheaper than many others
Cons: Hard sometimes to reach over to put stuff in the back, but it never hurts to rotate to plug things in.

Dreadful Dell Customer Service
Pros: A grat price on a capable machine that will fill most people's needs.
Cons: This is my last Dell... horrible customer service! Dell is a fine company before and during the sale but are non-existent after the fact. This notebook could use a serial port. Charged $49 for a floppy drive. Battery life stats are true only as long a

My first laptop. Great so far!
Pros: I chose almost all the upgrades possible when I ordered mine: 2.4ghz P4, 512 mb ram, dvd burner, 15" display, etc. Very happy so far with it's performance for a "BUDGET" PC
Cons: A little heavy. I carry it to work everyday as part of my daily workout routine. No internal WiFi

Hmmmm Bogus
Pros: the laptop is sturdy. I dropped it on the floor of my office and it took the blow like a champ. also after you upgrade it it isn't so bad but it is really weak stock. you can get a much better laptop performance wise for the same price as an upgraded 1100
Cons: well to name all of them would take a whole page. i feel silly that i bought it the ram stock sucks. the celeron is a joke. my keyboard broke after three months of use. but all of that is ok the thing that makes me say it sucks is the video card. all i ca

Great product for an inexpensive laptop.
Pros: 15" screen is very nice. After a month I added another 256 MB of Ram. Upgrade was very easy. Added wireless card and docking station. Everything works great.
Cons: It is very heavy but is ok if you have average or above average strength. Could use more ports but an inexpensive USB docking station takes care of that nicely.

Cons: Loud fan!

!HARD TO BEAT VALUE LAPTOP!
Pros: Good battery life. Great on display. Fast celeron 2.4. Very beautiful case. Excellent value for the base price!
Cons: Even though the system rocks, it is extremly recommended that you upgrade the memory to at least 384mb, get a bigger hardrive because 20gigs just ain't the enough, get the dvd/cd burner upgrade, and above all else, make sure to buy the wireless card so th

laptop does not have minipci... impossible to install integrated wireless.
Pros:
Cons: there's an empty space in the spot where minipci is located on the 5100. a dell rep told me that the laptop was in fact minipci ready in an email. When I couldn't find the slot, telephone support insisted that the laptop was minipci compatable for about 3

Reliable, durable, fast, cheap
Pros: I've had my notebook for about half a year now. Battery life is bettery than anything else out there in it's price range, going on 4 hours. I haven't had any problems with any of the components breaking. Durable notebook computer.
Cons: Only cons I can think of: 1) built-in speakers are not that good 2) while the PCMCIA slot functions fine and everything, the push in-tab to pop out the PCMCIA cards have become hard to push to remove the PCMCIA cards. It's easier just to pull the PCMCI

Don't Buy This Laptop
Pros: Keyboard was decent before the keys started falling off. Decent battery life.
Cons: Keys are falling off, the screen wobbles, the PCMCIA slot has broken three times, each requiring the motherboard to be replaced since it's not a seperate part, integrated video is terrible (1024x768 is the only native resolution, and if you make it any lo

You gotta know what to do with it!
Pros: Trashed the WIN-XP Home it came with and put XP-PRO instead. Most of the software it came with, I didn't really care much for. I needed software to do what I needed it to do and it works better than I had hoped for. If you do buy the 1100 and you don't ca

GREAT FOR THE MONEY!
Pros: I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1100....I have no problems with it...keyboard is fairly easy to touch, relatively fast, and the speakers are awesome...very good bargain for the price..would love to trade my old desk-top version for another Inspiron!
Cons: none that I can see.... true the speakers aren't much on playing alot of music, but why would I want to play alot of music on a laptop?...keypad a little hard to mess with.

Cons: I was dispointed about the customer service. They did not seem to want to really help me. but the computer is reliable so not a big deal. I was kinda hoping for more USB ports and a floppy drive but I only spent $799 bucks so overall I am happy.

The weight don't worth the price!!!
Pros: Cheap!!!
Cons: This is heavier than my old 133MHz Thinkpad, and about 3 times as heavy as my 900MHz Thinkpad. Don't buy this if you decide to carry it around.

A great product at a great price, but not a $1500 notebook for $700!
Pros: I got a 2.4Ghz celeron w/40 gig HD, 256mb ram and the cdrw/dvd drive for $778. It has worked flawlessly, and the touchpad and keyboard are great--can't understand why some reviewers are complaining about them; and unlike some of the negative reviewers, I

Great laptop for the price.
Pros: Great running system for the price. You can't expect a $1500-$2000 laptop for the price of this one. My Celeron 2.3 with XP Home and 256MB Ram runs great. Thought I would upgrade memory but really no need yet.
Cons: A little heavy but better that than being flimsy. Get the heavy duty battery (94 WHr)if you want to watch a DVD movie in flight.

My new Inspiron 1100
Pros: The upside of the notebook is the price for starters. I got mine for $545.00. I got mine with a 20 gig drive, 14.1 screen, DVD/CDR-W, and 256 Ram. All in all I got a fantastic deal on mine.
Cons: The only downside of this that I see so far, and that is the support. The tracking of the notebook from start to finish is not always known by the humans who answer the phones.

Cons: -Computer feels a little flimsy. -Despite the 2ghz Celeron, 256mb ram, 5200rpm HDD, and 64mb Intel Extreme Graphics, this laptop gets it's butt kicked by my old clunker desktop in the area of gaming. Don't expect to be able to play GTAIII during history
