"Worst laptop I've ever owned"
Pros: When it works, it's awesome...
Cons: ...unfortunately, it is consistently "down"
Summary: I purchased this computer "loaded", which means I spent nearly $3,000 for it. I wanted to max out its capabilities without spending another $500 or so to get an XPS. I've had it in the shop twice in a year, I've had to reinstall Windows (freakin') Vista twice, and I'm constantly beset with error messages and unanticipated shutdowns. Dell claims these are all software issues and won't back the product or fix its faults, meaning the 3-year warranty I forked over a few hundred extra bucks for is worth less than a box full of Monopoly money. I'm not sure which I'm more finished with...Dell or Windows. At any rate, I'm ready to junk this thing after less than a year and get something else...something that consistently works.

Dell is a usurious company charging nearly 25% interest on their 'easy' financing, yet has a horribly staffed support department that doesnt know its... . That being said, I have owned the 1720 for 16 months with zero hardware issues, and no software issues that weren't related to my lack of virus protection. I switched from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 and the 1720, now reading (and using) 4 gigs of memory is reproving itself as a top value. I sympathize with someone who paid nearly 3 grand for their model with no satisfaction, but I got mine with a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache pentium processor, a decent sized hard drive, a 8x DVD (+/-R double layer) drive (no blueray, why w/o HDMI), 2 GBs of memory, later added 2 more. with the rest of the best of the model for just under $1000. today its likely less. So, I find my experience quite the opposite of his.
