"Member of 5150 dead motherboards club"
Pros: Great features, fast processing
Cons: Motherboard problems
Summary: I had mine for about eight months before the motherboard manufacturer defect made it such that it would shut down whenever I tried to move it. I was on the phone with Dell Tech Support for 45 minutes at least three times going through all the obvious crap I'd already tried before realizing it was really broken.
When they sent me the system back with a new motherboard, it kept giving me BSOD errors after 30 mins - several hours. Returned it again, and they gave me an Inspiron 5160. Who knows how long this will last? I got a 3-year warranty extension just in case... when it's working, it performs admirably!

That was exactly what happened to me!
I've had my 5150 for almost 2 and a half years now, it was unusable for the whole last summer because it shut down everytime I moved it. Once the DVD rom stuck and I had to wait almost THREE months for a new one. Then another THREE months to get their attention again and another THREE months for them to send a techie and replace my motherboard, but now it goes way faster and is movable again
It's good to know it was a problem of Dell's, not mine. Despite that, it works pretty weel. -
I had the same problem. Whenever I moved the laptop, it would die. At first I thought it was the cd-rom, but then i realized that it was the movement the cd-rom was making (by the spinning) that caused the laptop to shut down. As soon as you move it, it dies. Not very portable, is it ?
