"5150 is TERRIBLE - Official member of DMC" on by itcassy

Pros: might be good for 3 or 4 months

Cons: motherboard, overheating, hard drive, LCD

Summary: In 14 months, the hard drive failed, the LCD quit working, and now they tell me the motherboard needs replaced. So I guess I am a member of the DMC (dead motherboards club). Since I am 2 months out of warranty, there is "nothing they can do." They should be a more responsible company and admit that there is a problem with the machine. This is the best way to lose customers that I can think of. I have had nothing but problems with this laptop. If you are still in warranty, CHECK YOUR LAPTOP for ANY signs of slowness, battery not charging, LCD fading, or anything and get it FIXED!!!!

oh - and never buy another Dell!

Motherboard failed 6 months after i purchased it. Free replacement with onsite technician. Motherbord died 9 months later again.
On site technician service was good, however the call in phone diagnosis was extremely terrible. I spent 3 hours running through their whole checklist and waiting around.

I am surprised this laptop received an editor's choice award, but I guess they only go by a week's worth of exposure. I have had my 5150 since '04 and will have my motherboard replaced for the SECOND TIME!! The power supply/connection/etc. does not recognize the AC connection and my laptop is completely dead. I am submitting this review off my work laptop. I have never experienced this many problems with a laptop EVER. This is one of those reasons why I'm thinking of going to a MAC! Thanks for the POS machine DELL!

Purchased mine a little over a year ago. I paid the extra for the in home service. My hard drive died a month ago and I ended up talking to someone I could not understand and was told they couldn't send anyone (what did I pay extra for?). They couldn't overnight the new hard drive so was without for over a week and then had to pay someone to help set up new hard drive. Now having problems with overheating (another service call). I won't call their service, I plan to look for a new puter. I thought Dell was a good company NOT would never purchase anything from them again.

Expensive paperweight, 3 months out of warranty power problem, powerjack on motherboard broken, totally dead now. check out the user forum on Dell's own website: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_power&message.id=31602&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
No More Dell for me!

Just wanted to concur with this statement about dell. Do a little research on the web for 5150 motherboard issue. There are hundreds of dissatified customers. I bought two computers from Dell in less than 2 years and I've had issues with rebates, credit AND now my motherboard. Luckily, mine isn't completely dead - just "touchy", so I'm going to try the soldering route otherwise I'll sell it for parts (minus the crappy motherboard, of course).
