"Nice design with one big draw back: the display."

by dskelton on June 1, 2005

Pros: Nice keyboard feel. Good variety of different port available. Stylish design and user friendly push button controls on the front of the unit.

Cons: Display is ok on ac power, but dims considerably when on battery power.

Summary: Attractive design with versitile features. The Inspiron 6000 can be configured from the basic laptop to a powerful desktop replacement pc. The one big draw-back is its display. The display dims noticeably when operating on battery power. A feature designed to prolong battery life no doubt, but one you should be given the option to overide.

The keyboard has a very good feel. Firm, but yielding enough to allow prolonged usage without fatigue setting in.

By watching Dells promotions, you can usually get a decent deal comparitively speaking.

I have one of these myself, and yes, when you switch to battery mode, the screen does dim but you can adjust that using the Dell Quickset icon at the bottom right hand side of the screen. it gives you options to change the brightness in different modes.. such as battery mode or charging mode.

dell gives a utility called quickset. otherwise you can download it at dell.com. You can configure the power option and ask it not to dim your screen when the power is plugged out. You can even configure the internal network card power management.

You can easily change the brightness of the display by holding down the Fn key and pressing the up or down arrows.

I found this laptop to be awkward in the beginning. After a weeks time it grew on me. I too had the complaint about the screen dimming to concerve battery life. So I did a search in XP help and found that all I had to do was hit F12 during startup, go to BIOS, then scroll through the very simple options about power management, battery life and screen dimmness. Smart on Dell/Xp's part to make it preset, but even better to make it something the ave joe schmo could configure. Overall I'd give this laptop a 7.9

I've used the 6000 daily for several months and its exceeded my expectations except for the dim display. In a brightly lighted office, I'm aware of the dim screen even on AC.

If you're not as concerned w/the life of the battery charge, just hit Fn up arrow and the screen can go as bright as if it were plugged in. Its also a setting you can change the default in the QuickSet app.
