Dell should keep making products like this.
Pros: portable, durable, decent speed (i have pentium M 2ghz and 1.25GB ram), nice design, well built, side screen, perfect resolution for its size.
Cons: noisy audio output

had this computerfor 2 years
Pros: i can say that after my LONG YEARS of having this computer it is sturdy and is for buisness or travel
Cons: its is out of date. only half a gig of ram, 70 gb of memory, and only a 1.69 ghz centrino

Portable laptop but need a battery with longer lifetime
Pros: Portable size and price
Cons: Need a long life battery as 8-cell or more larger capacity
out of 354 user reviews
Small, easy to use, and has lasted almost 4 years
Pros: I like the 12-inch screen, the keyboard, and pretty much everything about the design of the computer. I got the upgraded battery so it lasts for hours longer than my husband's Mac. Plus, since it's an old computer, it's running XP.
Cons: In the 4 years I have had it, I replaced the battery and the power adapter once, which is to be expected. It has slowed down but only after 4 years worth of wear and tear.

I love this computer have had it for 4.5 years!!!
Pros: Its light. Its durable and reliable. Have not had any major problems with the computer since buying it used from a friend. I recently upgraded the memory with my VIsta install and it works like a beast.
Cons: The only con for me is the front position of the earphone outlet, can be a tad frustrating, especially for couch surfing (go figure)...

Monitor issues, dell support is the worst
Pros: Laptop met my needs until the monitor had issues
Cons: Dell support killed my laptop and I have to fight them to fix it
Just note don't buy any Dell computer unless you can fix it yourself. Dell can make an okay laptop, they just can't fix a laptop. If you still want to buy a dell, just note the following:
1) There is nothing next day about Dell's next day service
2) On their online support chat, if they can't help you the just disconnect you and you have to start the process all over again.
I will never buy a Dell again.

Horrible computer, don't every buy a Dell
Pros: Cheap otherwise none, the computer and company are crap
Cons: Proprietary parts, poor service, no accountability for repairs, breaks down repeatedly
-1 month later: it froze from time to time, had trouble starting up, crashed, and would fail to load the chipset plugins
-8 months later: after 5 phone calls totalling over 15 hours of talking and over 30 e-mails, Dell sent me a box to ship back the computer and have it repaired
-8.5 months later: laptop returned to wrong address
-9 months later: laptop picked up from wrong address and shipped to my correct address, laptop received without any repairs completed, original problems exist along with now the monitor shutting off from time to time
-9 months: Dell ships a new hard drive which I have to replace on the computer myself, hard drive was refurbished and had tons and tons of spyware and adware
-12 months: monitor shuts off from time to time
-15 months: out of warranty now and modem shuts off from time to time
-20 months: monitor burns out, laptop continues to freeze, and now the laptop begins to overheat. The laptop is now a desktop.
->20 months: we'll wait to see what happens next
Don't every buy a Dell laptop or desktop. These computers are cheap for a reason; the parts on them are generic, non-branded parts cheaply made in China and assembled into the load of crap that Dell is. My case is not unique as there are many, many individuals around me that had Dell laptops of various models break down on them and vowed never to go back to Dell. The service, if you every reach it, is also horrible. The company is designed to minimize cost by having you try to perform all of the repairs remotely. Unless you purchase a 5 year warranty on the machine, you are guaranteed to lose. A laptop is also supposed to run for more than 2 years as my previous Toshiba Satellite has been running just fine for the past 6 years. I hope the advice has helped.

avoid if you want the best bang for your buck!
Pros: Computer is great...for 1 year!
Cons: Dell decided to be slick and put a battery into their laptops that will need to be replaced yearly. If you don't care about spending an additional $125.00 per year for you laptop, buy a Dell.

Nice Laptop; Horrible Customer Service
Pros: Small, Lightweight, Great looking screen
Cons: Tech Support, Tech Support, Tech Support
With a Dell, you need to be as much concerned about tech support as with the product. I gave a high rating for the product, but for tech support, I would give a 2.

Dell Loses With Terrible Customer Support
Pros: Nice Computer Overall
Cons: Terrible Service, Won't Honor Warranty
1. The warranty begins when the manufacture finishes the product, not when you bought your computer. Also keep in mind, I bought the extra two year "complete coverage" warranty for an additional $230.00
2. Batteries have a limited life and will eventually go bad (but after only 10 months?).
Message to Dell; you'll save money in the short-run by not honoring your warranties but you'll lose in the long-run because you'll lose loyal customers like myself and will have people like me spreading the bad word. I will never buy another Dell product.

Small but slow
Pros: Looks great, small and compact, has a dvd drive, cheap
Cons: Slow, can't handle multitasking, useless for 3d games
Another pretty big complaint is the cramped keyboard but I should expect that from an ultraportable, it's just hard going from a 17 inch screen laptop with a full keyboard to a 12.1 inch with a cramped one. I just have this computer for school work, the Gateway is for games and other demanding things.
Overall I would reccomend this if you don't demand much out of your PC

great choice.
Pros: light weight, sleek design, firm keyboard, baller WXGA screen, good performance, quality build
Cons: smallish keyboard, dust/lint-prone screen, awkward 8-cell battery
I seriously considered the HP Pavilion dv1000 and the Toshiba Satellite M55. Both of these are about a pound heavier than my Dell (which weighs 4.2 lbs. without the optional 8-cell battery), but they also have considerably larger hard drives (my Dell has only 40 gigs; the Toshiba packs 100). Because I also have a desktop with a massive hard drive, the Dell's relatively puny hard drive is not a problem for me. What I really cared about was RAM, but this did not turn out to be a point of contention among the three laptops I considered, which all have 512 MB of it. Ultimately, the Dell's small size and solid reviews sealed the deal for me.
I take my computer everywhere. I dropped an extra 70 bucks for the optional 8-cell battery, which gives me a charge of about 4.5 hours. This was a smart move; I read a lot of reviews that slammed the 700m for its weak standard (4-cell) battery life. I have not had any problems with the battery, although I am pretty good about plugging the laptop into wall outlets when I have the opportunity. The keyboard feels firm and solid under my fingers, even when I go into my periodic typing frenzies; it doesn't flex like the Toshiba M55's keyboard did when I tried it out. The keyboard is about 8% smaller than standard laptop keyboards, so it takes some getting used to, but I found that typing became quite natural and comfortable after only a few days of use. The computer performs exceedingly well; I'm able to keep as many Firefox and Word windows open as I want to, which is a huge plus.
I have only a few complaints. The most glaring problem with the computer, in my opinion, is the awkward design of its 8-cell battery. I have received many a comment about the fact that my laptop has junk in the trunk. The 700m would look a lot sleeker if the optional 8-cell battery were flush with the rear of the computer. I also worry a bit about the durability of the plastic keys. I've been using the computer for only a month, and already the space bar has a big shiny wear mark in its center. Are these keys going to become deformed after a year? I think they might. The screen, while bright, shiny, sharp, and beautiful, attracts lint and dust at an alarming rate. I suggest carrying a soft cloth around with you if you select this laptop. The right mouse/trackpad button seems a little flimsy (which is odd, because the left trackpad button is quite solid), and occasionally vibrates when I type. The computer also comes loaded with a lot of junk software from Dell/AOL, which took me more time to remove than I would have liked.
All in all, this is a great computer. It performs extremely well, weighs a scanty 4.2 lbs, and oozes quality and durability. Generally speaking, Dell laptops are a little more homely than their sexy counterparts from Sony and Toshiba, but this 700m is actually pretty hot. If you have any reservations about buying this computer, abandon them. You'll be happy you did.

Cons: key size and placement, glare off screen in bright light

Great for the light packer on the go.
Pros: Compact size and weight, fashionable look, beautiful LCD widescreen
Cons: Clunky select buttons, big battery pack
I only found a couple things I disliked about the 700m. First off, the right & left-click buttons are freakin' loud. I have to fight the urge to not right-click on anything. Also, the battery is huge in comparison to other packs --- it adds on weight to the normally 4-pound laptop.
If you're just trying to sail by in college with a computer that won't fail you but provide you a sassy affordable look, this is it. The Inspiron 6000 (it's big brother) is a great laptop as well but if you prefer something not so overwhelming in size and look, you're better off with the 700m.

Long time performer
Pros: Durable; bright, beautiful screen; amazing performance
Cons: Battery; One Crash
Because most people want to know about the cons of the product, I will tell you mine. I have two cons. The first is the battery life. On the normal battery dell offers, the battery life will recieve a maximum of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Obviously that amount is minimized depending on the intensity of your work and the brightness of your screen. Performance seems to lack in the battery mode. This is especially evident when playing video games. Despite this, I still managed to give the product a 10/10. The reason is because I have never had a battery run out on me even during my extensive traveling. The second con I have with this is minor. My laptop crashed in August of 2005 during a visit to UCLA. I asked Dell to diagnose the problem for me and claimed for it to be a hard drive problem. I suspected, despite what Dell told me, that the problem happened in the operating system as some of the files were curropt. I also suspected it to be a virus problem. I reinstalled Windows with minimal data lost and was up and running. I then took Dell's advice of submitting my hard drive for warranty. The warranty was quick and the procedure to change it was smooth. I don't blame the product for the cause; rather I blame Windows for it.
To be honest, I use my Dell more than my faster 64 bit AMD Dual core desktop. Although the desktop is faster, the Dell's screen keeps me attached to it. It has one of the clearest, brightest, most beautiful screens in the laptop industry. It is the envy of my family and of my friends. It is sharp, crisp, and the resolution is nearly amazing. Watching movies on this screen sometimes is a greater delight than watching a movie on a 50 inch 1080i plasma.
The 700m, since I originally bought it, has not lost its ability to perform. Usually computers become slower over time with the ram becoming "clogged" or the hard drive becoming full. This computer manages to perform at the same speed and same ability since I first bought it.
Finally, the 700m is durable and long lasting. I expect this laptop to be with me for 3 more years even with advancing technology. It, in my opinion, will meet the test of time. Even with new dual core laptops coming out, this laptop has something special to it that no specs can beat. It is a fine product with no real lacking problems.

700m on the go wonder
Pros: bright screen, small size, surprizing power
Cons: sometimes there's some screen glare.
2.0GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, XP Professional. Extended battery. This Dell is a diamond. I can run Excel, Word, photo editing, and Quake III. With Centrino, I can do it from anywhere. My g.f. has a maxed-out Dell 8600, and lusts for my 700m. It's so small and light, carrying it around is no problem. Looking at the screen is like looking at a large high quality glossy photograph. Like the wide-screen format for watching DVDs.
Just junk the bloatware, and you'll have smooth sailing.

A worthwhile purchase
Pros: light weight, good performance, bright screen, loud speakers
Cons: (see review) screen could be bigger, keyboard could be less cramped, mouse feels awkward
I recently bought this laptop for my girlfriend to use in grad school. It was a WORTHWHILE purchase. For about $1100, you get a laptop that weighs less than 5 lbs, has a solid Pentium M 1.7 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, loud speakers (don't expect Bose quality sound -- they are laptop speakers), a 24x CD burner/DVD combo drive, excellent built-in WIFI, and a beautiful and bright screen. It's great for students, people who frequently use MS Office, surf the web, watch DVDs, view and edit (but not extensively) multimedia, and/or non-power PC users.
There are reasons why I didn't rate it a 10/10, although they are minute. The screen is reflective, but not as bad as people make it out to be. Neither myself nor my girlfriend frequently use this laptop in the sun, so it's not that big of a problem. There's also about 3/4 of an inch border around the screen and keyboard that Dell could have used to make the screen bigger or the keyboard less cramped. The average man will find typing slightly a bit more difficult than normal. Also, the touchpad feels awkward -- not as natural as other laptops I've used (IBM T41, T42, T43; Dell Inspiron 8200). I can't put my finger on the exact reason why, but it just feels cheap (probably because it is).
Anyway, in conclusion, if you use your PC for simple tasks or do alot of word processing or travel alot or like to move about your house with your laptop, then I highly recommend this laptop to you. This laptop is not recommended for gamers, power users, graphic design, or heavy multimedia editing.

Don't be dupped
Pros: too heavy and clumsy
Cons: non existent support

great all-around portable
Pros: small, lightweight, capable
Cons: battery life, screen a bit too reflective
I decided to format the hard drive when i recieved it and reload just the programs I wanted. (Not recommended unless you know exactly what you're doing). So it loads very fast and quick startup and shutdown times. Handles media (CD, DVD, RWing) great.
It apparently has a flaw with sound/voice recording. Since I don't do either, that wasn't a dealbreaker for me. Overall great machine. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs a travel companion that can hold it's own.

Excellent Notebook With Tragic Flaw
Pros: Small, light, cheap, bright screen, SD reader
Cons: Lock-up with screen flicker, reflective screen, wears-down quickly
The screen is also extremely reflective, but the computer makes up for it with a VERY bright screen (I would estimate at LEAST 15-20% brighter than my Vaio).
Enough with the bad. Although I wouldn't recommend this computer, I still love it. So small. So light. And SO MUCH cheaper than anything else in its class (except Averatec; might check them out for next purchase).
One other pet-peeve is that the white plastic "accents" and the keys both show visable wear quickly. I don't like it when commonly-used keys "shine". The white "accents" started to turn grey on the corners quickly, and I take really good care of my computer.
Last thing. I took this computer to Iraq. One year in the desert in some of the worst conditions (did the same with my Vaio, by the way). It took a beating.
At the end of the day, though, the uncorrectable screen-flicker & lockup is a deal-breaker when it comes down to the bottom line. Check out the Dell support forums, though. If Dell has corrected this issue, I would HIGHLY recommend this computer. Otherwise, forget it.
Oh. Last thing. Don't pay full-price for this (or any) Dell. Wait until they run those $600 off 48-hour sales. I only paid $850 for a 2.0 GHz with 512. Forget paying over a grand. Shell out for the Fujitsu if you've got that kind of cash to throw around.

Awesome computer
Pros: Everything
Cons: The battery is heavy!
Sound is great, though some of the louder music doesn't come in as well, using headphones fixes that problem. It's not very good for movie watching, I will admit, because the screen is a little small for that. But aside from that, I love its portability and it runs great!

Manufacturing problem with the Inspiron
Pros: great if you do not need mic or display
Cons: microphone and video display problems.
This machine has an inherent problem with the microphone and the display and the item is still being sold to suckers ... er I mean customers.
Visit the Dell Forums to check out the problems.
This machine shuts down periodically due to some kind of display problem and the microphone makes a helicopter like sound when used.
Dell also has absolutely horrid customer service that hangs up on you (when asking you to hold) and reports your machine as lost if they cannot help you.
Not once was I rude to them or they to me, however they simply could not give me the same answer twice AND they kept inaccurate notes of our conversation so that it appeared that I had received the proper information. I made a complaint about having to spend 5 hours on the phone and not receive an answer and the woman read back to me the notes that do not match at all what I was told.
Shame shame Michael Dell!
Your mother would not like that kind of behavior.

Fantastic little thing!
Pros: Small yet powerful, everything you need
Cons: USB ports on the left
After lugging around a 15.4" Toshiba Satellite, I decided that even though I don't do a lot of travel, a lighter laptop would be great. I didn't need an ultra-portable, and I still wanted all the necessities without having to have external devices.
Apart from the great price, the things that attracted me to the 700m over similar laptops was:
- The widescreen: much better for watching DVDs, and I prefer widescreens over standard sized ones for work as well.
- The keyboard: although it is small, it is arranged in a much better way than a lot of other small laptop's keyboards.
- Powerful: I'm a software designer, so I need a fairly powerful computer, and the 700m had the right processor and memory for my needs.
Additionally, it runs very quietly and quite coolly. Although I haven't yet travelled with it my experiences with my old laptop have taught me that these two are important factors as well as weight.
The only negative I can think of is that the USB ports are on the left side, which means if you have a corded mouse (and you're right-handed) you need to snake it around the back. I've got a wireless mouse now, so it isn't an issue, but with my corded trackball it was a bit of a mess. The VGA port is also on the left, and I prefer to have my second monitor on the right, so that needs to snake around too. With a dual monitor, I found it quite annoying when I first got the laptop that it would never remember the relative location of my second monitor when I restarted, but upgrading the graphics driver (which was a slight ordeal) fixed that.
You may have read about a microphone port defect in 700ms. I knew about the defect but got a 700m anyway because you can always use a USB mic if need be. But to my surprise the defect didn't appear on my laptop! I tried with several mics through the port and they all worked fine. I assume Dell has fixed the problem. My sister actually als got a 700m a couple of months before me, and on hers the defect was quite noticable, but on mine it is gone. So don't let that scare you away from a great laptop!
One other thing I'd like to address is the shininess of the screen, as many people have counted that as a negative. When the screen is off it is definitely very reflective, but when using the laptop it isn't an issue at all. In fact I would say it is easier to view in bright conditions than the matt screen on my last laptop. The screen itself is just beautiful to look at, in fact I prefer it to my secondary monitor although it is physically much bigger!
In short, a great laptop whose benefits hugely outweigh any drawbacks.

Great value for the price
Pros: Sharp Display
Cons: Small keyboard, speakers a little tinny
Haven't had a hw or sw issue with it yet. Runs all programs we normally use without problems.
The display is very nice - used mostly in indoor situations, but has done fine the few times used outdoors.
You may want to think twice about this if you're not a fan of less than full size keyboards - but that's a problem you'd have with any small footprint laptop - and it seems to suit all of us just fine, especially the kids.
DVDs play well, but sounds better through the headphone jack than the speakers.
Since its not the latest and greatest from Dell, its price is lower. If you find a good online coupon, you'll really do well in the pocketbook getting this one.

Great for Students and light travel for business
Pros: Great battery life with 8 cell, Screen is beautiful, S-Video out saved my life
Cons: Sound control not integrated would be nice, fit-n-finish not perfect
My main use for the computer is Email, Web, PowerPoint, and Word. This computer satisfies all these with-out a problem. Everything integrates well and I now find myself using this as much as I use my Viao desktop with 19 inch Sony monitor. It's nice to be able to sit on my sofa, watch TV and chug away at Emails during commercials and Time-outs.
The main reason that got me to write this was because this computer saved my job this weekend. I was hosting a Benefit Auction at a local restaurant and was told by one of my Board members that "oh yea my laptop will integrate into their TV system no problem" When we got there it wouldn't because they didn't have the stuff to take her monitor out into their system, long story short I pulled out my 700m and with-in 15 min had it hooked up and working perfectly due to Dells ingenious idea of having an S-Video out.
MY only complaints are that it doesn't have a volume control other than when the comp is on, which isn't such a big deal since I always have it on mute. Also, the fit-n-finish aren't perfect, my ports on the front are somewhat crooked and when things are inserted they sit at an angle.
When you compare the small negatives to the price and how wonderful of a machine it is I think it is a bargin.
I get daily compliments from fellow students and co-workers on how "awesome" my computer is and recommend it to everyone.

Value for money for the mobile user
Pros: Powerful, stable, small, light, classy, cheap
Cons: Fragile casing, atypical keyboard
The main drawback is its lack of sturdiness. The keyboard is small and doesn't have some convenience keys, such as dedicated Page-Up/Down keys, but this can be gotten used to. My main gripe is about the soft material of the casing. Even with generally good care, a slight knock from a USB cable or something can leave unsightly scratches. I have doubts about its ability to take an occasional accidental fall.

Powerfull and Portable!!!
Pros: Exellent Bright screen, Powerfull 2GHz option, Light, Cheap
Cons: Mouse button are clunky, integrated graphics
I am a college student and I love this laptop, the screen is the best I have seen on a laptop and it is a joy to look at. I run several programs at once and it never freezes. The design is exellent for a Dell laptop, and the price is even better when you use the Dell coupons. The only grip I do have is the mouse buttons are clunky compared to other dell laptops I have used. That is why I gave is 9 out of 10. All in all this is an exellent laptop with an exellent price tag.

ok, if you have the luck to get a sane machine it might be a decent notebook for a fair price. but as I own another dell notebook which also made trouble the 700m will be the last one.

Dude, Do Not Get A Dell
Pros: Less expensive that other lightweight laptops
Cons: Worst service experience of my life, very small keyboard, does not easily connect with peripherals (physically or technically)
I was concerned about a possibly cramped keyboard, one that I haven't seen since you can't look at a Dell in a retail store. So my plan (which ended up being quite expensive) was to get the lightweight Dell, but then get an external keyboard, mouse, monitor and dock that I could plug it in and out of. I have some final technical questions I couldn't answer online so I called the Dell number and ended up in a high-pressure sales situation that ended up with me buying everything on their no money down plan.
Flash forward about a week. The system arrives. I start setting it up. The keyboard is borderline ridiculous (for example, the period key, which, you know, you hit everytime you finish a sentence, is half size)- for some reason they don't use over a half inch of space on either side. Its difficult to place disks in the disk drive. The broadband cable requires a large amount of brute force to pull out once I've plugged it in.
Then I set up the monitor. I try plugging it in both ways- nothing but a test screen appears. I call Dell's service line, after 78 minutes on the phone with someone in India (much of that time holding) I get passed on to a second level guy (after a few more minutes of holding). During this time I also tried and failed to get my printer installed and printing correctly. 90 minutes and two Dell tech support people after I called, they're satisfied its a hardware problem. I say great, send me someone to fix it, since, you know, I spent a couple of hundred dollars on your #1 service plan which includes that. Oh, well they didn't know about that, I'd have to speak to a third person about that. At some point after the next few minutes of holding I got flat out disconnected.
When I called back, I just wanted to return everything and end the fiasco. That took 35 minutes. The experience came full circle when I ended up in another high pressure negotiation where I had to decline an offer to speak to a hardware expert and another offer to replace the whole system. When I told the woman that I had had enough and just wanted to return it, she told me I'd have to pay for the return shipping. I argued, saying why should I have to pay to ship back a product that didn't work. She said because I rejected their cure, which was a new system. I said, well, that would cure the defective product, but what would cure the horrendous service that I paid hundreds of dollars for? She said, and this shocked me even two hours in, that I "just didn't give it enough time." I wrote that down. I was given a return number to take to a UPS store, who would print return labels and ship the return boxes- at my expense. Naturally, even that was screwed up, as the number only covered two of the three boxes. I guess Dell figured I'd want to just keep the wireless keyboard and mouse and pretend I had a functioning Dell computer.
The happy ending here is that I am currently writing this post from my new Fujitsu Lifebook 6240 and I cannot sing its praises enough. Sure, its a few hundred dollars more than the Dell, but either way you get what you pay for. The Dell is just a poorly engineered machine with a horrendous service organization behind it. If you can live with a keyboard that is way too small and the one you get functions so you never have to deal with Dell again, perhaps you can get away with saving the money. But if you ever have to get on the phone with Dell, you'll wish you sprung for something better.

Hard to find a better value
Pros: Tons of features, great price
Cons: Extended battery wobbles a bit, cheap feeling mouse buttons
Right out of the box, the disk drive was making annoying clicking noises. Unlike for some of the other people here, customer service was fantastic. Dell overnighted a replacement drive right away. The last 2 months everything has worked great.
This is my travel laptop, for vacation and other times when I don't want to bring along my 9 lb. number cruncher. It is perfect for that role, at a remarkable price. It was hard to find equivalent features for about $1k.
It had to be powerful enough that I could work with complex spreadsheets if needed. I also wanted DVD-RW capability for data sharing and DVD playing. The built-in SD card reader makes it a great trip companion for my camera.
It's not powerful enough to be my only laptop with some of the complex spreadsheets I use. But with less demanding needs like being in grad school again, I'd be very happy with this machine. In fact I use this computer more than my desktop and other laptop combined.
The extended battery lasts about 4 1/2 hours, and it's an inexpensive upgrade. You'll outlast most comparable computers and it'll still cost much less. I think CNET does a disservice by comparing performance with the standard battery to much more expensive machines. It's great to have the option of different batteries.
Overall, you'll have to pay a lot more to get a machine nicer than this.

Cons: so so build quality, no graphics power to speak of, batteries die fast

Horrible warranty and tech support
Pros: Cheap price, light weight
Cons: You get what you paid for, terrible CS and support
1) You never know if they are going to cover anything even though you purchased the warranty.
2) It takes an average of 1 to 3 hours to talk to rude Indian CS rep.
3) The laptop is so flimsy and easy to break down. You sure will need support but I doubt if you are going to get.
I will never buy another Dell product ever again.

A laptop that works?!
Pros: Cheap, Attractive, Flexible, Light
Cons: Sound, Battery, Memory, Not Durable
What I really like about the 700m is the way it looks. It's really sleek and attractive. Though I think they should of used white or light grey colored keys for the keyboard. Speaking of keyboard, the comma and period are about half size of a regular key and next to each other. I'm fine with it, but it bugs people with larger fingers.
Make sure you get the extended battery. I got that as an optional extra instead of a replacement because I wanted to compare them. The original battery doesn't last too long compared to the larger one. The only downside of the larger one is it's LARGER. it sticks out on the back of your laptop, which I don't mind but it doesn't look too attractive. It does also add a little weight to the laptop, not to mention it's already pretty light.
Reviews on the web... people complain about the speakers, mic input, and comma and period keys. I just think that cover should be more durable. I would also like to see multi-media keys so I can have instant access to volume and play/pause/stop/</>. Though they have mute, vol up, vol down as Fn keys on the keyboard.
What is nice is that you get a SD card reader that I didn't know about until I got it. RAM is expensive from dell. I just bought 1gig of RAM from NewEgg for just over $100 and installed it myself within 1 minute to save hundreds and hundreds if I went through Dell.

LEMON Product, & Part Replacements are REFURBISHED
Pros: It is a small laptop
Cons: For a Business computer, Although it's small, it has a cheap plastic appearance. Definitely not professional appearance.
Additionally, they gave me 7 days to quickly swap out the hard drive. When it takes a at least a day for them to respond to any inquiry I have. AND MY COMPUTER IS STILL HAVING The same issues. I would not have expected this from a new dell laptop, less than 5 months old.
Good luck. If you don't want to deal with potentially not so great computers & Poor customer service (OVERSEAS) who have language barriers, chose another company, don't chose Dell.

Small Wonder
Pros: Size, options, performance and looks
Cons: Keyboard slightly smaller, would like 1 more USB port
The unit that arrived looks and operates like new. I found a unit with 1.8 GHZ (Centrino), 40 GB Hdd with a single 512 RAM module installed (only one is user accessible) so I added another 512 @ 50 bucks for 1 GB total. I also chose one with the DVD writer and 8 cell battery. The 8 cell battery sticks out the back about an inch and increases useage time to around 5 hrs. I wish it had 3 USB ports instead of 2 and bluetooth would have been nice too, but you can't have everything.
I do love this laptop alot and have been very happy with it all around. Its size is great for my traveling ways and it is a unit your happy to pull out in front of everyone instead of one of those all-black chunky generic machines.

Great "All-Around" Notebook
Pros: looks, size, weight, specs, screen, and PRICE!
Cons: power cable, usb ports
I do dislike the "left side" usb port since I am "right handed" And I think the power cable is to short and bulky.
However, 700m is everything I expected from a "good" notebook.
I bought this note book on 8-01-05 and it dilivered on 8-08-05
WHY 10? BECAUSE ONCE I CONSIDERED EVERYTHING ON THIS NOTEBOOK AND THE PRICE I GOT IT FOR, I THINK ITS A STEAL. BUT SINCE ITS NOT PERFECT. . . .9!

Excellent Powerful Small Portable Package.
Pros: Lightweight. Widescreen. Clear reflective screen. Centrino technology. Easy swap optical bay.
Cons: Slightly cramped keyboard. Screen picks up dust quicker.
Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz)
1GB DDR 333mhz
80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Sony 8x CD/DVD Burner (DVD+RW,+/-R)
Intel PRO Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g54Mbps)
64 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Battery
The 700m weighs around 4.1 pounds depending on what it has in it. It feels amazingly light and small when you pick it up, but when you use it, it doesn't feel cramped or too small. The keyboard isn't a full size keyboard, but it doesn't feel too small. The only keys that took getting used to were the comma and period keys, which are about half the size of a normal keyboard key. Other then that, the size is perfect, it's highly portable.
The Synaptics TouchPad V6.2 gets nothing but praise from me. It's highly customizable with tapzones, virtual scrolling, edgemotion, and more. I also ordered an additional 8-cell battery with my notebook which is HIGHLY recommeded. The 8-cell battery is quite a bit bigger then the 4-cell but it doesn't add significant weight, and it powers your laptop for around 5 hours. Combine that with the standard 4-cell, and you get almost 8 hours of battery power.
The 700m comes with a 12.1 Widescreen TFT reflective screen, and it is absolutely gorgeous. The screen looks bright, clear, and vivid. It has several settings for brightness for your personal preference. There have been things said about this screen picking up dust faster then other screens, but I didn't find it to be a problem.
As for performance, I customized my notebook for high performace. The 700m runs really well. I ran a plethora of programs with no problems at all.
As for graphics, if you are a hardcore gamer this is not the laptop for you, it can't handle really high performance games such as Doom 3 and FarCry. However, it has no problem with less demanding games such as real time strategy games. I was able to play Rise of Nations, Knights of Honor, and Warcraft 3 at highest settings with no slowdown or problems of any kind. I was even able to play Sims 2 on the lowest settings.
All in all this is a great laptop for the mobile person who wants to bring performace, movies, or games with them. I got a scanner printer and a Dell Pocket DJ with my order and it all came to around 1900. It was shipped very fast and I am very happy with my purchase.

Great laptop for the price, does what you need.
Pros: Wide screen, fast, great buy
Cons: Feels flimsy, poor battery life
The wide screen takes some getting used to, web pages, because of poor design, are usually small and take some tweaking of the browser to make them readable.
The keyboard is undersized but I find I can actually type faster on it than I can a regular size keyboard, it is very responsive.
This isn't a desktop replacement, but if you need a laptop to surf the web, do word processing, play most games, etc then this is the laptop I would recommend.

Great little Windows PC laptop.
Pros: Small, great screen, solid case, good keypad touch.
Cons: Why did they make the period, comma & question mark keys smaller?
It does take getting used to with the smaller period, comma and question mark key, and I don't know how a man with big hands could handle it. My husband likes it though, and the good touch on the keyboard makes up for that inconvenience, and you do get used to it. I am a speed typist and love the touch of the keyboard.
The only thing I would change on this laptop is make the DVD player not have a tray come out (like my daughter's Mac Powerbook) and not have those 3 smaller keys...which I knew about ahead of time. Otherwise it is perfect.

a very good machine but not perfect
Pros: brilliant screen, compact size, excellent performer
Cons: cheap appearance, rattling mouse buttons
I got the 2.0 GHz processor with 1 G memory. On AC power, this laptop rivals desktops with a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor. However, on battery, the laptop regularly operates under 600 MHz to conserve power. It would be naïve to think that this can be a desktop replacement. Unfortunately, there are no bios options to change the behavior of the processor. You are stuck with it. On battery, it's only a fraction of the laptop you have got. For any heavy-duty tasks, AC power is a must. It's not even a matter of how long the battery will last. It is primarily a CPU performance issue in the first place.
Don't quite like the appearance of this laptop. I don't want to say this is an utterly ugly machine either. It just does not strike any confidence, and certainly can't evoke a "wow". The entire finish looks cheap. The arrangement of the white rims with the gray metallic main areas is a bad mix. Looking at this laptop is like looking at someone who is wearing a tie, a shirt, and pants that don't quite match. Worsening the appearance is the shape and location of the battery. The battery looks misplaced, does not feel an organic or harmonic part of the machine. It is more like a superfluous bump in the back. If you allow me to push the above analogy, the person you're looking at not only has mismatched attire, he also got a hump on his back. This laptop simply is not anywhere as handsome as the all-black IBM ThinkPads.
And the mouse pad buttons. Several reviewers mentioned this. And the mouse pad buttons really are quite bad. They easily are the worst laptop mouse pad buttons I have seen. They are noisy. They look rough. They rattle however you touch them. They look and feel more like buttons on a $20 toy instead of a high-tech notebook computer.
Dell should definitely redesign the appearance of this laptop and improve the mouse pad buttons. But even if they don't, this is a great performer and will bring very satisfying services.

Fantastic Laptop
Pros: Size, design and performance (and a terrific screen).
Cons: Keyboard could be a tad bigger. No infrared.
The machine is stellar. Very fast, quiet and runs reasonably cool (compared to my older Latitude D100).
I use it for anything from normal MS Office things to view 7MP pictures (4 megs per pic) and watching DVDs without a hiss.
I get almost 5 hours with the extended capacity battery. The screen is amazing.
My only gripes are the size of the keyboard, which takes a bit to get used to (and then it is uncomforable to switch back to a normal size keyboard) and the lack of an infrared eye (i had to buy a USB eye).
All in all, extremely happy with it (and with the 750 dollar discount coupon i found online). Obviously you are not going to play Doom 3 on it, but then again, if that's what you want you should probably be looking elsewhere in the desktop world.

great little computer
Pros: portability, performance, price
Cons: small screen
It's a breeze to just unhook from the docking station and take where ever i might be going. The performance for the price is great (40% off Coup). Loaded with 2Ghz and 1GB ram. I would have liked a faster harddrive, but it's been working fine so far.
The Bad
I think I am going to have to get an external monitor for when I have it at home. I've had it for a week and i still havent quite gotten used to the small screen, especially since I'm in front of a 17 in screen at work all day.

Great Machine!
Pros: Inexpensive, Quiet, Attractive, Small, Lightweight, and Powerful
Cons: Poor Integrated Graphics and Weak Sound
-Machine itself is attractive with nice white trim.
-Very compact and powerful. Never has problems running multiple applications.
-Incredibly quiet, you can't even hear it running. And it does not get hot on the bottom so it is safe to use on your lap.
-Very portable, it is barely larger than a piece of paper.
-Not expensive. I was able to order mine for under $1500 with a 2 GHz Pentium M, 1.23GB of RAM, and two extended batteries. My advice would be to use slickdeals.net and get $750 off. Also only order 256MB of RAM from Dell and get the rest from crucial.com.
-Weak integrated graphics. Obviously won't play Half Life 2 or Far Cry. My main issue is that it does not support Dell's 20" and 24" widescreen LCD monitors.
-Weak sound. The speakers are a bit pathetic and do not sound good at high volumes. The integrated sound card is decent but not great. I am planning on getting an Echo Indigo IO to fix this.
-Some complain that the extended battery sticks out too much, or that the keyboard is too cramped, or that the mouse buttons are too clunky. However, I do not find any of these issues to be serious.
-I would definately reccomend the Dell Inspiron 700m. You will not regret your purchase.
Another great website is couponmountain.com. Just click on the Dell Coupons and it will give you a list of rebates.

Dell 700m Surprises
Pros: Bright Screen, Ultra Portable, long battery life, solid construction, strong performance
Cons: Needs bluetooth, does not use d-bay expansion architecture, 1 PCMCIA slot would be nice (just in case)
I was always an advocate of bigger was better and had previously owned various gargantuan sized laptops so that I would always have what I needed as far as power or expansion was concerned. Needless to say I was nervous about my acquisition. It arrived with lightning speed from Dell as usual (I have never had faster shipping than I do with Dell). When I took it out of the box, I was a bit afraid of the slightly smaller keyboard, but I adjusted very quickly without any issues. I am a hybrid touch / hunt and peck typist and either way worked fine for me. The screen is so bright I was blown away. (there is a bit of reflection on the screen so bright light behind you (ie the sun) could be problematic but has only been a minor issue for me. The performance has been better than I expected and I am thoroughly pleased in that department. As far as battery life, I bought the extended sized battery and it lasts and lasts. I could reasonably expect to get almost an entire coast to coast flight on one charge.
I hope nothing changes or gives me problems (knock on wood) as I love this laptop.

Don't say: "it won't happen to me"
Pros: Looks and works great for exactly 2 days
Cons: Dell's customer service
2 days after I've got the good looking 700m it died on me. The screen just went black. I figured I got a lemon and wanted to return it (since dell doesn't guaranty replacement for a new computer (it may get fixed or they may send you a refurbished one even though you bought it new)) and after an hour with their horrible customer service I realized that I will have to pay the shipping charges. They didn't care the product was defective. The representative told me to fix it under the warranty (which meant: 5 hours with technical support on the other line) or pay the shipping to return it. The rude representative didn't agree to transfer me to a supervisor. I insisted and he just replied: "No". So I will return the computer, pay the shipping cost and feel like an idiot by thinking that "it won't happen to me". This was my first and last experience with Dell. Spend more money and get a better service elsewhere. Remember: there is a chance that it will happen to you. Are you willing to take it?
After some more effort, which included contacting with more senior personal at Dell, The issue seemed to be resolved (an exchange for a new computer and more personal service). I hope I won't regret it.

Perfect Student or Business Notebook
Pros: Lightweight, VERY Cost Effective, Powerful, Looks Great, Quiet, Doesn't heat up, ect, ect.
Cons: Can't play new games well
I searched around for days and read every review I could get my hands on before nervously deciding on the 700m. I was NOT dissapointed!
I was worried about the keyboard being too small (Its not. I adjusted after about 10 minutes of typing. Even the "." key that everyone complains about hasn't been a problem. And I have slightly larger than average hands.)
I was worried that the screen would be too small and cramped. Its not. The screen has a really high native resolution, So there's plenty of room on the screen. And the screen is so bright and readable that even the small icons and text are a breeze to see.
Many people also had problems with their headphone jack causing hissing. Wasn't a problem for me. My 700m is whisper quiet. I don't even think the fan is on 95% of the time. The keyboard is also very quiet. Sound was a concern for me as I would be using this laptop in classroom environments and I don't want nasty looks from everyone around me.
Speaking of looks, the 700m looks sweet. Its white and silver styling has an understaded, professional, yet space-age look to it. And the screen is literally the most beautiful screen I've ever seen on any computer. Its incredibly crisp and bright. Its GREAT for watching dvd's. There is occasional glare, but even in high light, you don't really notice it unless you're looking for it. All in all its a beautiful machine. No one can beleive I got it for the price I did!
Which brings us to the price matter. I got a pretty tricked out machine for $850!!!!! Here's a hint, search for "Dell Coupons" on google. Dell puts out coupons pretty often for (no joke) $750 dollars off! Just enter the code and you've got an advanced ultraportable for the price of a no name desktop.
Its size and weight were big motivating factors for me as well. I didn't want to be lugging a brick around to my classes everyday. The 700m is slightly thicker than I expected. But it actually gives it a sturdy feel that I really like.
The only downside is that its integrated grafix card probably wont play any games from the last two years. With a few exceptions. Warcraft 3 is supposed to run well, so is Sims2. But you wont be playing hl2 or far cry on this thing. I figured its probably a good thing for me anyway. It'll help keep me from wasting all my time on games.
The only other warning I would give is get the extended battery. The normal battery lasts about 2.5 hours with normal use (not too bad) but the over 5 hours of usage that the extended battery provides easily makes it worth the extra cost and size.
All-in-all this is an exceptional computer. If you're looking for something light, powerful, quiet, and you're on a budget, the 700m is the computer for you. I would recommend it to any student or traveler with no reservations.

Great - So Far
Pros: Awesome Technology, Great Screen, Accessories a must, portability amazing
Cons: Take my review for what it's worth - I've owned 3 days & will follow up
Pros - this thing looks awesome; critisize my lack of intellectual verbage, but man it's cool. As I say, I just got yesterday, but...I can say, I am an engineer, and have tested every accessory/feature of this notebook. OK - pros:
1. Sharp Technology
2. Great graphics (tested on net, DVD's, etc)
3. Portability - I bought the larger battery, which was highly recommended on this site, and it's still amazingly light. The size of a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Wow
Cons - always easier to criticize. But, make sure you evaluate what's important before you lay credence to negative posts. With any electronics, there is a small fraction that will not function. I noted those reviews in my decision, but found most users loved this notebook; unless you want to use telephony. An option I will never even explore.
1. When you get a Dell, understand what you are getting. A value-based product, regardless of the type/model. But the service, as I am finding out, sucks. Based out of India - both on phone and online. If you aren't familiar w/PC's or this notebook, maybe get a different model. Otherwise, know about service going in, that's why you saved a couple hundred (although I would have paid more for English speaking/based CSR's) and accept.
2. Key size is small. It's an ultraportable - what the heck do you expect - it's still awesome.
3. That's all, so far. I researched so I kind of knew what to expect.
Bottom line- after 1 day, my fresh initial comments are that this is a cool piece of technology. If you are a first mover, grab it. If you are looking topinch pennies, don't get this, or any other laptop. Accessories that are a must - the 256MB Memory key is something out of James Bond! I would have gotten 512 if I actually realized how functional and cool this gadget really is...also, get mucho memory - maybe not from Dell as others sell cheaper; but I think it'll help; and jury is out on the Netgear Wireless Router that has been bashed on this site. But, initially, it kicks but. The Dell Leather Carrying case is cheesy with a medium size Dell buckle (I would have preferred a Targus) but whatever, it'll do. So far, I recommend the additional battery and the larger battery. I'll post after a couple weeks.
Overall, initial reaction - get it.

Sweet laptop
Pros: Small size, I can take it anywhere. Great screen.
Cons: 4-cell battery life, dell support.
I haven't had any of the traditional problems that were stated on other posts. the mic jack works fine. I called India using my computer and used the mic and I or the other party had no problem.
Only bad thing about the laptop is the sound. The laptops speakers are very small, and the sound quality isn't very good, but its managaeble. Also the dell support is horrid. Just to get in touch with a representative takes 30 minutes of being on hold. Also the 4 cell battery lasts only for 2 and a half hours. So you need the 8 cell which lasts 5 hours or so.
Everything works fine, none of the traditionl problems, perhaps dell corrected their errors on the laptop. Or maybe I'm lucky. If you want a small laptop with a lot of power for its size, you should get the 700M. It's great for travel, home or business and it is very quick and powerful for its size. Amazing laptop for its price. Surprises you, especially after reading all these other posts, I was a little bothered about my purchase, but its performed well above my expectations and it does just fine against other laptops.

Best notebook ever!
Pros: Great screen, light, small, fast, relatively inexpensive
Cons: Small keyboard, Reflecttive screen

excellent ultraportable with some flaws
Pros: cute sleek look, fast cpu, good size
Cons: video card, extended battery size, screen no bright view
[Edited by: admin]
this is by far the coolest laptop i've used, don't feel heat at all on hands or lap. great size and cute outlook and fast processor yet quiet. however, there are still a few shortcomings--graphic card is shared and lowly intel; no bright view option; screen is quite dark on battery. overall, this is a decent product, unlike other poor-designed dell computers. i'm just glad to have it.
i used online chat to contact dell . thankfully, they solved a few problems for me. pc can be restored by pres ctrl+f11; microphone noise can be mute by uncheck the microphone boost option ; the screen brightness can be changed by press fn+arrow key up or down. these are a few technical issues must be addressed when u use dell 700m
why can't dell upgrade chip to amd new chip turion 64? intel pentium m is slow and wireless is worse--drop signals too often connection halts when speed changes.
after 3 monthes use. screen flickers sometimes, maybe 2 times per week. synaptic pointer not working properly. both have to restart system to get laptop work again, and u lose all the work. sun java not able to update , luckily old version still works.

Really close to perfect - not quite a 10
Pros: Fast CPU, Beautiful little screen, Small & light
Cons: Some keys too small, other keys out of place
PROS - Gorgeous, 12.1" bright and sharp widescreen display. DVD Heaven! Fast CPU. Centrino mobile wireless capability built in. Hard disk up to 80GB! Inexpensive DDR memory for upgrading. Took me 3 minutes to add 1GB Ram. DVD +/-RW. Very reasonable price from the Dell Outlet (They say refurbished - I say it looks and works like brand new). Dell warranty.
CONS - Only real flaw is that there are about 7 keys that are too small (1/2 normal size) in the lower right corner, and the right shift key is just out of place. Otherwise, I would have rated it a 10.
WHO'S IT FOR? - Business travellers wanting a light and powerful package. College students. (for term papers buy a full sized keyboard for $50).

So close to perfect.... my faith in Dell fully restored!
Pros: Gorgeous Screen, Rock Solid Performance, attractive case, easy to use Fn hotkeys
Cons: Cheap/Flimsy mouse buttons, ugly extended battery
The editors of this site rated this computer at a 6.4 (Using "thin and light" as the category, which at 4.1 pounds is an arguement that can be made in favor of the ultralight), but after changing the specs to the 1.8Ghz and 5.5 hour battery, the rating would be something in the range 7.6 which I feel would be much more accurate to rate this computer at. In the category of bang for your buck, there simply is no contest. After a handful of discounts, I picked up the 700m for $823.00. 1.8ghz, 60gig hd, 256 ram, standard and extended battery, and remote for media experience.
The moral of that story is if you can be patient, Dell will almost always offer some huge discounts. I realize that the 256mb of ram seems a little on the lean side, but after looking up some aftermarket ram websites, 59 dollars for another 512 of single dimm ram sounded a lot better than Dell's $200 option to upgrade to 512 total, now I'll have 768mb and saving $140. I can't wait to see how this computer runs after that upgrade.
With a native resolution of 1280x800, the widescreen lets me run Photoshop on the left, aim on the right, ObjectDock above, and iTunes miniplayer in the upper right corner without feeling like the screen is crammed.
The Dell Media Experience is a great alternative to Win. Media Center, especially if you don't like the pressure of buying a Media Center PC that Microsoft so willingly applies.
Bottom Line: If you need something that somehow fits in the crack between "ultralight" and "thin and light" then this is your computer. There are no feelings of compromised performance for weight but it's small and light enough to let you forget it's even in your bookbag.
Ok, so after throwing on another 512mb onto this computer, it's amazing. Now it just feels like there are no limitations. Eight widgets, firefox, object dock, thunderbird, winplosion, & aim all run without fighting for memory or any of the centrino's 1.8ghz.

Good system in a small package
Pros: Reflective Screen, Small size, Low weight, many standard features
Cons: short battery life (and the larger battery is well, larger), just 2 usb, slow hd, sub-par graphics chip, not wide enough wide screen

There is so much packed into a tiny body. Only a few flaws, nothing unreasonable
Pros: Small, light, very stylish design and colors, great wide-screen, fast modern cpu, the ability to upgrade in the future (can max out at 2 gb of ram!), internal cd/dvd bay, all in a small notebook
Cons: As you have read before, the keyboard took getting used to. The placement of the speakers is good but there is very little bass and the sound can be "tinny" at times.
If you are looking for a laptop that is ulta-portable yet still functions as quick and effortlessly as many desktops this is an excellent bargain.
i read in the official review that one of the complaints was a lack of wheel to scroll thru pages. Well I just discovered that there is! If you run your finger along the verrrry edge of the right side of the touch pad it will act as a wheel and you can scroll up and down through pages! Try it!

Great Student's Notebook
Pros: Price, Specification, Size, and Screen.
Cons: Battery, Video Card, SD Card Drive
Pentium M 2GHZ 755
512 MB RAM
Modular CD-RW/DVD Drive
80 GB 54,000 Fujitsu Drive
My machine works great, it is fast, works well with most productivity software, and runs media great. This machine can hanle many tasks at once. Even now as I write this review within Firefox, several tabs are open, I am copying files from a cd, listening to music, and I have OpenOffice.org open.
It seems durable enough, but I not sure if it would last a decent drop.
The 80211.g WiFi is the best I've seen on a notebook.
It is also small and light, only 4 pounds, and can disappear under a legal size paper.
The screen is great, and vibrant. It is not at all to reflective with the brightness all the way up.
The speakers are loud and deep. They are very good for laptop speakers.
I've installed Fedora Core 3, so I no it works well with Linux.
I only have a few gripes. One the Battery is kind of weak, only 2.5 hours. You need the extended battery as a back-up.
It lacks a real video card so there are so compatibility issues with really recent games.
My last gripe is the SD card slot. I use a Sony Camera so this has little purpose. It is useless for me unless I can find some cool compatible PDA accessories.
Over all, this is a very decent machine. Even now it is still the best I can find

Great Laptop, no mic problem
Pros: Screen, size, price
Cons: Wish it was a little lighter
I was pretty concern about the mic problem that is documented so well on many different forums. I would be using skype and also other IM that require the mic input. However with some testing last night everything seem to work well. I try very hard to hear the hissing and clicking sound with different headsets but they were not there. I also tried recording, and it is crystal clear. Maybe DELL had already fixed the problem in the latest hardware? I am not sure, or I could the lucky one.

Pros: Lightweight, Exceptional Screen, Fast Processor
Cons: Short Batter Life, Smudgy Screen, Small Keyboard
out of 354 user reviews
Amazing screen! You got 2 LOVE this laptop!!!!
Pros: Screen is extremely clear and bright, very lightweight and tiny to carry around.
Cons: The keyboard is a little small since I have long finger. It takes a little getting used to typing on it.
The keyboard is a little small, but you get used to it when typing alot. Also, the battery is not so great when using the highest brightness on the laptop. I have yet to order the extended battery but don't care to fork out the money just yet. I also suggest not buying the exernal floppy drive since there are USB flash drives out there now. I don't know what I was thinking when I ordered it. But it's okay, wasn't too expensive. I also wish that I had ordered the memory from Crucial.com since it's $140 for a 1GB 1 Dimm memory instead of paying $50 extra at Dell for an extra 256 MB.
I originally was going to order the 600M, boy am I glad I bought the 700M instead. I wanted lighter and easy to carry around. I saw the 600M and it actually looks like my old Dell inspiron 4000 from almost 4 years ago. I think they weight about the same. Glad I picked the 700M!!!

Sleek, thin, and light: everything I need
Pros: Looks good; solidly built; very lightweight; great price.
Cons: Battery doesn't last forever.
It's not a powerhouse, and the battery life won't allow you to work for hours without a cord, but it's a sweet sexy little notebook for the price.
out of 354 user reviews
Sleek, smooth, sexy
Pros: Bang for the buck champion
Cons: Limited ports, weird volume system tray bug
Aesthetically, this notebook is pretty standard. It's no VAIO but the layout is still more attractive than many notebooks put out by IMB, IBM, etc. But to each, his/her own.
The functionality of this laptop is where the Dell 700m really shines...literally. The widescreen display is very impressive. The resolution is excellent and the colors, vibrant. While the hard/shiny surface does create some reflection, it's really only noticeable when displaying dark images. Even then, it is hardly problematic. The integrated WiFi is an internet-addicts dream and it operates as quite as an alter boy during Sunday mass.
The speakers and keyboard/mouse layout are pretty standard. The dual speakers are only good for emitting highs but that's pretty standard. Many seem to have problems with the keyboard layout being 92% the size of a standard keyboard but the average user can adjust within a day's use. The ,./ keys do have something of a learning curve, however. Many also seem to have issues with the touchpad/mouse buttons but they definitely get the job done.
With all of the benefits, I do still have some minor quibbles. Given that this laptop is borderline ultra portable, the variety of ports still leaves something to be desired. In addition, there is a weird bug with the volume control icon being absent from the system tray. While this isn't a huge deal, it's useful to know how loud your speakers are without accessing the control panel. This bug does not impact volume adjustment via the keyboard. I've also read that the battery life is limited to around 3 hours but an upgrade can remedy that problem. Besides, it's meant to be light!
For the dollar, this notebook is pound for pound the value champ in its class. The wide screen display is really top notch and uncommon at this price/class of laptops. It's earned my seal of approval!
Talks of a manufacturer defect with the motherbaord have been circulating on the net. The defect apparently prevents recording with the laptop via the microphone port. This is also certainly the cause for the sound card driver anomalies that I have experienced thus far. I have found a solution to the missing sound icon in the system tray. That link in addition to a site detailing the manufacturer defect follow:
http://glorysoft.omsk.ru/volumetray.html
http://www.recall700m.com/
While volumetray fixes the system tray problem, it does not necessarily fix other issues pertaining to the manufacturer defect.
This computer still represents an excellent value. The defect impacts a very select few individuals who use the microphone jack and record streaming music. While I fall into the latter category, I still feel that this laptop is an excellent buy for people that aren't affected by the defect.

Excellent Business and Home Use Laptop
Pros: Small, Light Portable. Purchased 10 of these units. Nice to have the DVD/CDRW built in. Light Weight, FAST, KILLER WiFi. Love the new front facing Firewire and Headset jacks. Also like the (2) USB 2
Cons: none really. I followed the advice of CNET and Purchased the larger battery. PURCHASE GOLD SUPPORT to avoid the lower level tech support from India (it really is BAD !)
HIGHLY SUGGEST THE LARGER BATTERY. Also, Dell has made a decision to offshore their standard tech support to India. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND UPGRADE TO GOLD SUPPORT which is much better and US based.

great product for the right customer
Pros: weight, battery life, monitor, capabilities for a portable laptop
Cons: extended battery sticks out a bit, integrated video card (to an extent)
1.6 ghz Pentium M
1 gig of Ram
40 gig hard drive that is 4200 rpm
and the rest is basically stock
I purchased this system a month ago for $1200 after i used an online coupon that dropped the price $800. So in reality i purchased a 2000 dollar system for 1200 dollars, which in my opinion is a great deal.
Like my opinion says, great product for the right customer. I say this because anyone who purchases this system should not be purchasing it if they plan to do extensive game play or processing. The limitation of the vid card and processor would most likely come up in those situations. However for the majority of computer users, who are looking for a portable system to surf the web, word process, spread sheets, IM, DVD playback, light game play and basic computer use should really take a look into the 700m. As a side note, the keyboard is a smaller keyboard, but i have yet to experience any major problems using it and I do have larger then average hands.
i have the 3 year warranty with 3 year accidental damage, a dvd player, and the extended battery which actually gives 5hrs

The Best Notebook Money Can Buy!!!
Pros: PRICE PRICE PRICE!!! Light Weight, Fast, Screen
Cons: 4 Cell Battery, Keyboard Kinda, Mouse buttons
Regarding price i have seen people pay 1200+ for this notebook...i paid $842.77 with tax and shipping for:
1.6ghs
40GB HD
8x DVD RW
Wireless 2915 8011a/b/g
512kb RAM
4 Cell Battery
2yr Extended Warranty
After i received it i used it like crazy for a week straight from watching DVD's to writing several papers for finals. I noticed the 4 Cell giving up after about 2 hours...so i found a 8 Cell battery for cheap on craigslist and now it goes for 5+ hours.
The screen is absolutely breath taking when DVD's play and while surfing the internet...
Like i mention before at under $850 you cannot find a better build quality notebook that weighs under 5 lbs and have these type of features and screen...Now go out and hunt for the $750 off coupon it will save you hundreds!!!

Best Bang for the $$ by a long shot!
Pros: **** AWESOME SCREEN! Small, light, DEAD QUIET, I like the KB, SCREEN!
Cons: No USB boot support, Not a great video card, short battery life
Historically, I hate Dell computers. This little 700M I'm using right now was purchased for resale on ebay. I've owned & tested many different brands & models of laptop, including expensive Sony models, Fujitsu, ASUS-my favorite) Toshiba, etc.
I fell in love with this little lappy. The screen is unbelievable, I love the feel of the keyboard, it's DEAD QUIET, and the perfect size.
It's not perfect, but so far I haven't found one that is.
The bad is minor, some people complain the mouse keys are noisy & cheap. It's not a big deal, but they do feel kinda cheap & clanky.
It does get warm on the bottom, but I can live with that thanks to absolute silent fan noise is pure heaven for my tastes!
3D well.. it sorta sucks. What can you expect from Intel? Fortunately, I do not play games on my laptop. That's what Desktop systems with powerful 3D cards & CRT screens are for.
Dell listen up, you have this little 700m here, all you need to do is re-design the mouse keys, make them feel a little less cheap, and offer this with an ATI Radeon or geforce go. Next, fix USB boot with a revised bios, and offer this laptop in BLACK. It would be almost a perfect 10! Add gigabit lan and It would be a 10!
The 10. whatever inch screens on Sony T series are too small. This Dell 700M 12.1" STILL has among the best quality little LCD screen I've ever seen on a laptop! (save for the beautiful WSXGA+ on the model 6000) Absolutely clear, sharp, crisp & BLACK BLACKS contrast ratio & SHARP TEXT, even though it's borderline too small a screen. Putting this little laptop right up beside many $3000+ Dell XPS GEN2/9300 WUXGA 's puts many of those 8 lb Behemoth FOG WHITES 17" to SHAME!! Why can't Dell produce a quality 17" screen consistantly like they do with this little 12.1"?

Excellent laptop, especially if looking for a bargain
Pros: very portable, powerful, beautiful screen
Cons: lousy battery life
This is an excellent laptop, and its' shortcomings are easily overcome or acceptable, especially for the great price.
I got a 700m with the 2 GHz processor, 1 gb RAM, 80 gb hardrive, DVD writer, Windows XP Pro, spare 8 cell battery, Intel Pro wireless card, spare power adaptor, and 3 year PLUS warrenty - all for around $1900. I saved a bundle since I found a $750 Dell savings coupon online (thanks to a suggestion from a previous CNET reviewer who recommended doing a web search for "Dell coupon"). I didn't get any software since I already have everything I need.
Compared to what some reviewers have written, my experience with Dell Customer Care was excellent - the laptop was delivered several days earlier than expected, and when I discovered that the spare battery was not included, Dell delivered it, no questions asked, within 48 hours!
A suggestion to customers needing help - I got a prompt response using the CHAT function on the Dell website (sure, they were in India, but had excellent English and were very professional).
For those that complain about the small keyboard, this is to be expected in a small laptop. Anyway, keyboards vary from computer to computer, and it's just a question of getting used to the differences - took me just a day or two.
The battery life is lame, and will only get worse with use, but I'm hoping the 8 cell spare battery will help.
The screen is beautiful, and I'm looking forward to watching DVDs! There is a bit of a glare, but it's very easy to get used to. For those that complain about it being too small, again, what do you expect from an ultra portable?
My company uses Dell, and I've been using their laptops for the past 7 years, with no major problems. I travel extensively and often in rough conditions, and they have held up admirably. Although I bought this laptop for personal use, I'm sure it will meet the same quality standards.
Overall, I would recommend this laptop for business users who what something small and very portable, but still powerful.

Amazing Small Package with Huge Power
Pros: Beautiful Screen, Lightweight with lots of power
Cons: Necessity of Dealing with Dell
My configuration was 2.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, DVD-RW. This machine is fast even with the 512MB. If you're buying this, definitely spend the money on the processor, not on the RAM because it is very easy to upgrade the RAM (yourself). You do this by removing a panel and snapping in your new memory. You can buy RAM online at a site like crucial.com for much less than it would cost through Dell (not sure what it does to your warranty though).
About the screen--SPECTACULAR!! I have used a WSXGA computer before this and the shiny screen effect on this computer makes everything look incredibly sharp. Awesome is all I can say.
Finally, for gamers out there, let me say that I do not count myself among you. I definitely got this because I wanted a very portable, yet powerful package (which I got). However, I do like an occasional game and this machine played mine (Star Trek Armada I & II; Star Trek Elite Force I & II; Jedi Academy; among others) without any issues at all.

Never Ever buy this junk !
Pros: Looks cute
Cons: Carpy Product/Horrible Customer Service
Buddy of mine and I ordered this piece of junk on April 29th, we got the product on May 11th 2005. I was so happy to have this laptop. Well it was working fine for two days and it broke on Friday (May13th).
I left the laptop running and went to bed and woke up, that is all nothing it stopped working! I call my friend he is having the same issue. I call the customer support after an hour of wait I get to the customer care. You know one thing while I am waiting "recorded" message says if your laptop doesn't switch on you have to power cycle!! Hearing my problem on a recorded message is really scary this means tons of laptops out there have the same problem right? After an hour of wait the rep told me do the following
Remove battery
Remove AC adapter and power cord,
Press the power button for 15 second and then put the battery and the ac adapter and power cord and start the system.
I did the above "Nothing happened"
Then he said
Remove customer removable units, Undock the system. Remove all external components.
Remove all customer removable units (CRU). These may include: Mini-PCI cards, Modular bay devices,PCMCIA cards,Modem daughter cards,Memory etc leave it for few min put it back
I did that "Nothing Happens" he said he doesn't know what else to do ... There was no power surge or anything because I had four other computers running that night ..
The sad part is even my friend who lives 40miles away had the same problem !!
So I am returning this piece of junk tomorrow ...
So be careful what you are going to get into ..
NEVER EVER order ANYTHING from DELL their customer service SUCKS big time. I have no idea how they still say we are NO. 1 in customer service and satisfaction!!
So think!
Thanks,

Great Laptop
Pros: Light, beautiful screen, powerful and fast
Cons: reflective screen, relatively small punctuation keys
I have found very little problem using the keyboard. The "comma" and "full stop" keys are reduced in size and takes a few minutes to get used to. But i have gotten use to it very quickly.
The screen is beautful, the color is very bright and vivid it is beautiful to look at.
I had no trouble setting up my wireless, everything is very user friendly
The processor is also very fast
Cons
The palm rest of the laptop vibrates when the optical drive is in use, but i find this to be ok. Not too distracting.
Contrary to many opinions, please do not format your hard drive once you get your laptop. I have found the dell pre-installed softwares to be very useful in helping me set up my laptop.

Value portable
Pros: Lighter than most laptops, bright and sharp widescreen, good battery life (with 8-cell battery)
Cons: Small fonts, weighs 2.1kg with 8-cell battery, only 2 USB ports
My first thought was that it was heavier than I expected. 2.1kg is much better than my previous laptop, but for the size of the 700m 2.1kg is fairly hefty. The 8-cell battery weighs 450g and the laptop itself only 1.65kg, so I suppose with the 4-cell battery you would get better weight. Still, I often need power for long periods, and a slightly heavier battery is better than being tied to a power socket. It's small and light enough to carry with one hand and type with the other, but you shouldn't expect to do this for extended periods of time (this is no tablet PC!)
The screen is sharp and bright, and the widescreen gives me plenty of room to work with. The small fonts put a bit of strain on my eyes, but if you have a utility to force font size to increase it shouldn't bother you that much. The screen is reflective, but under normal lighting conditions you shouldn't notice reflections of background objects.
I'm not exactly a touch typist and my hands aren't very large, so the small keyboard doesn't bother me (I type only with my index fingers and occassionally my other fingers, so if you're that kind of typist and your hands aren't big, the keyboard should be fine). My typing is somewhat slower than on a full-sized desktop keyboard, but it's not particularly frustrating. The exception is the removed pageup/pagedown keys, which I use quite a lot.
The boot-up of Windows XP is fast. I'd say it performs somewhat better than my 2.4GHz Northwood Pentium 4 desktop. If you get it with 512MB RAM you should be able to work quite comfortably with many applications open. The RAM is DDR not the newer DDR2, which is in a way good because DDR has faster access times but lower bandwidth (I don't need the speed and bandwidth very badly though).
There are only 2 USB ports, and they are inconveniently located at the left side of the notebook (so my mouse cable needs to snake over to the right side). If you're going to be using a USB printer to print data from your thumbdrive and use a USB mouse to perform these operations (or worse still if you have big hands and need a USB keyboard), you'll be in a bit of trouble.
There are a few bonuses not found on some ultraportables (though the 700m isn't exactly an ultraportable), such as an SDCard slot. I generally don't use these extras however.
3D performance is far from great, thanks to the integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2. My notebook scored 2401 on 3DMark2001, which isn't bad, but it won't play the latest games such as Half-Life 2. It's more than enough for some 3D games like Tux Racer though.
I won't comment on bundled software since I'm planning to install Linux.
Generally the Inspiron 700m is quite good, even with the aforementioned drawbacks. The price makes it even better (though you should wait until you can get it with 512MB RAM and 8-cell battery for under US$1200).
Get it if you meet the below criteria:
- 3kg desktop replacements strain your back
- You have medium/small hands (say 15mm-wide fingers?) and are not a superfast touchtypist
- You need lots of battery life and don't mind 2.1kg OR 2.5 hours of battery life is sufficient for you and a 1.8kg laptop will suit you
- You watch widescreen-format movies such as DVDs on the road
- You don't play the latest 3D games
- 2 USB ports will serve your needs
- You are not extremely concerned about having the newest Sonoma, GMA900 and DDR2 RAM
- You are on a budget, but not a shoestring budget
- You sometimes need to make presentations (in school?)
- You are not looking for a tablet-like gadget which allows you to write as you walk
- You understand that if you get it for the price I did, you won't get WinXP Pro OR MS Office.

Well-built, economical machine
Pros: Compact size, crystal-clear screen, speed and overall value
Cons: Small keyboard, runs a little warm
Overall the 700m is a solidly built machine. The chasse is sturdy and there aren’t any flimsy parts. Although design wasn’t my criteria when purchasing, it is a nice looking computer.
The basic criteria I had for this computer was 1) Powerful processor, 2) Light and small, 3) Positive user reviews, 4) Easily expandable and 5) Economical.
1) Starting with the processor, I bought the 2 GHz model and have been impressed with the speed. When looking around at other ultra-portables, the 700m was one of the only notebooks that would go up to 2 GHz.
2) The 700m is small but still feels substantial. I bought the 8-cell battery which adds another inch to the depth and about ½ pound to the weight. The screen is crystal clear and easily viewed in a variety of conditions. There is some screen reflection as many of the other reviews have pointed out; however, I have found this screen to be one of the best I’ve seen over a wide range of viewing conditions. It doesn’t seem to get washed out in bright-light conditions.
3) While the editors didn’t give the 700m a great rating, the user reviews were one of the highest across this line of notebook. Most of the feedback is spot-on. The keyboard is about 90% the size of a regular keyboard so it takes a little while to get used to. I’ve found it easier to use than I thought it would be, except for the period, comma, and forward slash keys that are half the size of normal. If you have large hands and touch type, this computer may not be for you. As I mentioned before, the screen is beautiful. While my primary use for the computer is programming and authoring, I did watch a DVD…absolutely amazing! While the 8 cell battery does add depth and weight to the computer, I have consistently gotten about 5-6 hours on a charge.
4) When I ordered the computer I purchased the most GHz I could get but kept the basic RAM and disk drive. I upgraded these through other vendors (www.kahlon.com for the memory and www.memorysuppliers.com for the hard disk). I added 1GB of memory and purchased an 80Gb, 7200RPM disk drive. I probably saved $750 by not ordering these through DELL. Upgrades for both the RAM and hard disk are a snap. I also ordered a USB docking station, keyboard and flat-screen monitor for using the notebook as a “desktop”.
5) It’s hard to find a comparable notebook in terms of features, performance and price to the 700m. I’ve used IBM T-series notebooks for the last few years and absolutely love them. But I couldn’t get the same features with the IBM at any price. Lesser features on the IBM still will run you $500 - $1500 more than what you would pay for the 700m. For reference, I bought the 2GHz model with 256Mb RAM, 40GB HD, Windows XP Professional and 3 year on-site premier support for $1500. When I priced other notebooks in the same class (IBM, HP, etc), the prices were anywhere between $3000 and $3250.

TREMENDOUS PRICE VALUE
Pros: BRILLIANT DAZZLING SCREEN, FAST 1.6, ALMOST A VAIO
Cons: No deal breakers, small keyboard, 4 cell is not accepatable, where is the irA?
The Wireless locates "hot spots" that you didn't know where there. This even caused me to venture into a McDonald's without the kids, to check my e-mail.
Introduced in 2004, this Inspiron has a small footprint, and large 12" W-screen. I've read that the Centrino 1.6 benchmark speed rivals 2.5 desktops.
Keyboard feels very solid, but the keys are too small if you're a 120 wpm keyboarder.
Dell's 700M is a solid machine with brilliant screen, and for $1,000. offers a tremendous price-value.
While I love my Rolls Royce laptops, the Sony VAIO's (F180 and TR1) - the 700M is lighter, looks as good as a Mac, and rocks on the road.
p.s. -Sony tech support even makes DELL look good! (It's all about outsourcing to India v. Argentina, anyway, right?)

Very good overall, a few missteps
Pros: screen, CDRW/DVD, 1394, overall features
Cons: palm rest, mouse pad, DVI, keyboard size

Love my 700m but not a gaming machine.
Pros: Powerful. Awesome screen.
Cons: Weak graphical acceleration. Hard to get to 2nd Ram slot.
However, this is not a gaming machine. Wouldn't even try to run doom3. It ran Sims 2 at a playable level but all the features were turned off and it was at low res. You just have to remember that you bought this laptop because it was lightweight and portable.

Terrible, a big mistake
Pros: None, a little ugly.
Cons: Trouble from the beginning
out of 354 user reviews
Pretty good, but it could be better
Pros: Compact Size, Bright Screen, Good WiFi
Cons: Bad keyboard Layout, Bad dvd burner, could be thinner
My other laptops and wireless cards couldn't detect any other wireless networks other than my own and I was so surprised that it can find other wireless networks that other wireless cards couldn't find. I like the wide 'reflective' screen which could double as my dvd player. The compact size is also pretty good which rivals laptops twice the cost. I have also heard the issue about the battery life of the laptop so I brought the 8 cell battery which should last you at least 4 hours.
Of course I have some gripes with the keyboard, 1) They could've made the keyboard bigger. There was about 1/2 inch of space on either between the keyboard and end of the laptop which they could easily made a bigger keyboard of. So they could made a 95% or even 100% size of a regular size keys that way. 2) the keys , . and / are 3/4 of the size of the other keys which cause you to make some typos. They could've easily pushed down the arrow keys downward so you will have regular size keys. The DVD burner is a Sony D56a if I believe and it has some issues burning cheap media. Also, it is 1.5" thick and it could've been thinner.
Well, enough gripes, but all else aside, it is a very good ultraportable under $1000 range (if you can find the deal.)

Hot Little Box -- just a few flaws from perfect
Pros: Lightweight, sylish packed with features.
Cons: Port locations, no real docking station, weak wireless antenna
While the small display seems to bother others, I find it crisp and easy to read. When in the office I connect a second monitor to edit large documents and figures.
The flaws are few but keep this from being a "10." The lack of a true docking station forces me to connect periperals in the office -- always a fun thing to do each day. The port locations are awkward. With the battery in the rear, the connections are side-mounted, causing wired connections to bend this way and that out to peripherals. I would love to see the addition of bluetooth to sync PDAs and phones -- there is no IR port.
The wireless connection is good, but the antenna is a bit weak. We have wireless connection in the office and the 700m drops it several times a day.
For the traveling businessman the 700m offers a compact, stylish and powerful system at a reasonable price.
I loved my 700m -- some person in Barcelona loved it too as it was stolen during the 3GSM show. Actually I was mugged in the airport and sustained a concussion -- UGH.
I was upset to find out that Dell no longer makes a thin and portable laptop with an integral optical drive. The Latitude 420 is a nice box but no optical drive. I settled on the 640m/E1405. Works well but it's heavier and bulkier.

Impressive laptop in a small package.
Pros: Nice screen, Light and great performance, Excellent support and the price is right.
Cons: Battery could have been better, Keyboard a little cramp.

great performance in a small package
Pros: thin, light, and very responsive
Cons: keyboard small as advertised
The Keyboard is rather small and I do indeed have larger hands, but I'm sure with some use I will become accustomed to it.
I would highly recommend this system to anyone interested in a very light, svelte and powerful portable. True the 3-D graphics suck but then again that's why I have a gaming desktop.

This is the best buy I've ever made. Nothing but praises.
Pros: Very lightweight and powerful. Does anything I want.
Cons: Battery life needs improvement, and that's all.
out of 354 user reviews
Fantastic!
Pros: Small but widescreen setup seems larger than 14" and it is crystal clear. Small and light. I love the new setup with nothing in the back; all connections and media bay are on the sides.
Cons: None really but for DVD movies and music could use external amp & speakers. In a quiet room the sound is adequate but if there is any background noise it is hard to hear.
It's too bad that people use this forum just to bash Dell. So many of the negative comments here have nothing do do with this computer, they are written just to bring the rating down and to criticize the company. Luckily most are poorly written and easy to see through.

Almost, but not quite "there yet" budget ultra-portable
Pros: Attractive design, flawless screen, fast for its class, very portable, good feature set
Cons: Keyboard really is too small, some may resent 5-hour battery that sticks out the back , can't handle newer games
The solution - FIND A COUPON! At $1700 minus a $600 coupon, this notebook spoils you if you're looking for something with the footprint of a piece of paper and an almost un-noticeable carry weight. This is a notebook for people who want something truly portable for around a grand, that doesnt sacrifice things like a fast processor or CD/DVD drive.
If you play games and crunch graphics on your desktop and are looking for a smooth little laptop to take to class or on trips, buy this, without hesitation. If your'e looking for something that acts just like a desktop, prepare to lug around a bigger notebook. This is NOT a desktop replacement. The nirvana of a small and light gaming machine is still a few years off.
*If you can't find a current coupon, ebay has many configurations at the time of this writing for prices similar to coupon.
*I opted for the cheapest hard drive and upgraded to the Hitachi 7K60 (60GB at 7200 RPM). This gives a nice performance boost - windows boots fast and much less "clicking around" lag in general, but do not attempt it unless you're familiar with replacing a hard drive and have the right tools.

Very Nice, Good price, well built
Pros: Size, weight, processor, SD slot, Firewire, excellent battery life with 8-cell battery, silent
Cons: No built-in Mic, screen a tad unstable, speaker trim rattles, gets a tad warm, no on-screen key effects
The biggest cons i have been reading about this laptop are its battery life, keyboard size, and "clunky" touchpad buttons. First get the 8-cell battery and youll get about 4-6 hours on a single charge. Second i have no problems with the ketboard. Thrid the touchpad buttons do not seem clunky to me at all. One of the things i dont like most about the 700m are its speakers, the plastic around them is not taught to the LCD so at higher volumes the sound distorts BAD!!, however sound was #8723089452430 on my list of important things on this laptop. Beware they used a toshiba HD in the 700m i purchased. I had a hitachi already lined up for it which i replaced before i even turned the thing on for the first time. This unit gets warmer then what i thought it would, though not unreasonably hot. The screen seems to wobble a tad when subjected to minor vibrations. Very noticable when the screen is black and not so much when color is being displayed. It takes it about 3 seconds to become still. I wish it would have come with builtin bluetooth, i have an axim and that would have been handy, USB bluetooth adapters are only 30 bucks so no big deal there. I turned the pointer speed to max and its still not fast enough for my taste. I wish it would have on screen key effects for sound, WIFI etc when using the FN keys.
In closing the dell inspiron 700m is a very nice choice for people looking for a small, light, inexpensive, and powerful travel notebook. Id suggest getting the biggest processor you can afford, get the least amount of ram you can since dell wants too much for their ram. I got 256 in it and paid 32 bucks for another 256 from crucial. Dell wanted 75 for another 256. I got this with a 750 off 1499 coupon. Dell support is tricky, make sure you buy anything dell under their small biz division. If you have to make up a business name. You have a better chance or reaching an american if your a business customer, about 50-50 instead of 0!

An Excellent Laptop with a few setbacks
Pros: Lightweight, bright screen, compact, nice design, silent, low-heat
Cons: small keyboard, small screen, no build-in mic, clicking sound, weak graphics, weak battery life (get extended battery), terrible techical support

The perfect laptop for those that don't need a gaming rig
Pros: Sharp widescreen, Lightweight, Fast, Style will get you compliments, Ultra-quiet, Very affordable with coupon
Cons: No built-in microphone, Only 2 USB Ports, Keyboard not perfect but good for hunt and peck-ers, speakers a little weak, lacks a credible graphics card
Everyone in my office wants one now. At a little over 4 pounds, it's easy to carry around and the 8 cell battery adds only a little extra weight. Screen does show dust easily, but the included clearing cloth works great. It's a great laptop for business and pleasure. Highly recommended.

So Far, So Good ! Small but GREAT notebook...
Pros: Price, Lightweight, Sharp Screen, Very Fast, Nice Design !!!
Cons: Small Keyboard & Screen is a bit small.
Like I said, so far, so good. I can't put the darn thing down. It's fast, sharp, light, cheap, great for someone who travels a lot.
This is an overall excellent buy !!!
Goodluck!

Compact workhorse
Pros: Light and compact, 12" screen is beautiful but small
Cons: Small keyboard, extended battery hangs out in rear
One annoying thing so far is that the extended-life battery hangs a bit loose behind the back of the computer, giving it a cheap feel. Not sure if all units are like that or just mine.

Line-Input Audio Problems - Design Flaw ALL Units
Pros: Nice Screen, Small Footprint, Great Battery Life
Cons: No internal mic, Horrible 3d, Line-In design flaw makes recording impossible
The screen is great, and the size can't be beat. Battery life and performance are also good.
WARNING TO POTENTIAL BUYERS:
ALL 700m's currently have a design defect which prevents use of the LINE-IN jack on your laptop. Keep in mind the 700m doesn't have an internal mic so you will be using this jack if you plan on doing ANY audio conferencing using programs such as Yahoo and Skype. 100% of all 700m's have this problem. Check Dell's support forum for full details.
The audio input on ALL 700m's produces a LOUD grounding noise. It makes the unit UNUSABLE for recording ANYTHING. I've sent mine in for repairs twice. Beware.

Smallish keyboard, overall good system
Pros: Beautiful screen, good performance
Cons: Small keyboard, more usb ports would be nice
The screen on this laptop, although many complain about it being reflective, is quite clear. The reflective layer keeps ambient light from bleaching the colors, and it is one of the better lcd screens I have worked with.
Overall, the laptop outperforms my desktop AMD Barton 2500 (1.8 gig) with the 1.6 Centrino and 512 meg memory. The only real performance complaint that I have is that there was no option for a 7200 rpm drive when I ordered it. I have tested it with the Hitachi Travelstar from the old laptop, & it performed as expected - FAST.
The shared video memory is definitely not for hard core gaming, although I have played Call of Duty without any problems.
As far as real work, it has run dual display with a 17 inch lcd monitor, running Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, several browser windows, email, image compression software, and media player pushing out the tunes at the same time without a problem. It has also managed to run 3D modeling software without any major delays. Video and MP3 encoding speeds are well above what the Barton in my desktop is capable of.
The keyboard is a little small, and if you are used to using a full size desktop keyboard, it will be somewhat frustrating for the first week or so.
One thing I had not seen mentioned in any of the reviews, and something I definitely do not like about the design of this laptop is the cooling fan. It is on the bottom of the laptop toward the back left side. If you plan to kick back in a recliner & actually use it as a laptop, it is quite easy to block the inlet to the fan, which will cause things to warm up quickly. Minor complaint considering the total package, but I think that locating the inlet right where the system will be supported (when not on a hard surface) is a horrible oversight by the engineers.
Overall, this laptop will definitely deliver, considering the cost. If you work on the battery, the 8 cell is a necessity. Mine has run over 5 hours a few times. If you want true desktop performance, ditch the 5400 rpm drive for a 7200, you won't be disappointed.

A jewel......
Pros: light, small, amazing screen, great wifi detection, silent, low-heat, powerful, value-for-money
Cons: battery, sound/mic jacks in front, small keyboard,
* the frame of the LCD is reinforced and slightly curved to absorb excess pressure, esp when storing in bags
* many useful keyboard shortcuts, including wifi on/off (which is indicated by a LED), volume controls, CRT/LCD toggle, CD eject, and LCD brightness
* monitor options readily available by right clicking on desktop
* the good quality of the screen is worth mentioning again and again
* as well as the extremely efficient and sensitive wifi detection hardware/software. My dell detects and gets connected to networks far more often than my friends' laptops.
It's of course not perfect. So here're a few faults that could've been improved on:
- the default battery is too short-lived, while the 8-cell one is quite unsightly
- the two latches holding the heavy battery in place seem very fragile
- plugging earphones and mic in the front facade is quite hindering
In any case, for the price and the portability, I don't think there's any better model on the market.
my config for US$1350 (bought in Singapore)
1.6GHz
1x512MB ram
60GB HDD (partitioned C:40GB)

Awesome power for an ultraportable!
Pros: Sharp screen, very light, solid feel, quiet, inexpensive (look for a coupon).
Cons: Keyboard for lilliputians only, 12" screen hard on eyes spoiled by 15"/17".
This machine is awesome for road warriors. It is very lightweight, quiet, and feels solid. The screen IS reflective, but it is VERY sharp. My config had (you'll get an explanation for my using the past tense in a moment) 512MB RAM, 80 gig HD, DVD burner, etc. Kinda wimpy graphics chipset, but this isn't a multimedia-optimized machine. Fan is VERY quiet (when it's on at all), unlike the industrial strength fans used to cool regular P4 chips shoehorned into laptops.
I have decided to return my 700m (a replacement Inspiron 9300 is already on its way) because I cannot get comfortable using the small keyboard. The comma, period, and slash keys are particularly maddening because they are 2/3 of the size of the already tiny regular keys. You will find yourself contorting your fingers in a neverending attempt to hit the right keys. My hands cramp when typing for extended periods, and the screen (12") is somewhat hard to see if you have it on your lap (compared to a 15" or 17").
But this is a great ultraportable, features-for-price-wise. If you really desire the ultimate in portability, I'd highly recommend the Inspiron 700m. I would rather save my fingers and eyes and get a better workout on the occasions when my new Inspiron 9300 and I will hit the road.

8X CD/DVD Burner
Intel Pro Wireless 2915 a/b/g 54Mbps.

Price: $1194.63 with Tax (Beat that Sony and IBM!!!
I’ve been looking for a new notebook for awhile now. I do have an old Pentium 3 Notebook that I was happy with, so I wasn’t in hurry to buy a new notebook without a serious research. After carrying 8+ lb pounds notebook for awhile, I needed a fast and light notebook that I can carry, without paying occasional visit to chiropractor. I didn’t want to carry addition peripherals, so I wanted CD burners and firewire port to be on board. Since my old notebook only had 1 1/2 – 2 hours of battery life, a longer battery life was a must. The Dell Inspiron 700m fitted right in. I’ve looked at Sony TR and IBM X series. They all have most of the features I need and they were definitely light. But compared to 700m, the Sony and IBM were noticeably expensive, and there were no online coupons available anywhere.
The notebook seems like well built. It is fast, and as all the other have mentioned the screen is very bright. Touchpad buttons DOES feel clunky but I really don’t like to use touch pad that much so I don’t have a major problem with it. And the punctuation marks are small, but I don’t have big problem using it, I got used to it within couple of tries. No Bluetooth is no biggie for me either, since I don’t have any device that uses this technology yet. And since my system was shipped with Fujitsu HD, it didn’t have that loud clicking/ticking sound of some Western Digital HD. The integrated video is not for hard core gamers but it will serve you well for many business, graphic, and video applications. The only major issue I have is a solder on RAM my system shipped with. In order to upgrade it to 512 MB Dell wanted Extra $200. Knowing the 1GB RAM modules only costs $200-$300, I decided to buy it else where.
Overall this is awesome light system that will serve anybody well, I strongly recommend it to a people who are looking for similar spec system. With coupons that are available all over the net, this could be one of the best system at bargain store prices.

awesome overall package; can't put it down
Pros: too much to list
Cons: gonna be picky so read below
Centrino 1.8 GHz
80 GB hard drive 4200 rpm
1 GB ram 2 dimm
Intel wireless a/b/g
8x DVD+RW,+/-R
2 8-cell extended batteries
$1365 total
i recieved my 700m last week and haven't been able to keep my hands off it. i used an e-coupon for $750 off if i spend $1999, and there was free shipping and handling as well, i think i got a great freakin deal. it's rather impressive with a plethora of goodies. the only upgrade options i did not get were the 2.0 GHz and 2 GB ram. the screen was a bit of a problem when i first turned it on because of the glare, but that was minor. i found that if i tilt the screen a bit lower than i normally do, there is minimal glare. besides, the screen is clearer when at his angle. i believe the glare that people see are from background images. if the screen is facing a bit towards your chest, there is minimal glare. the keyboard didn't take much getting used to because of the small proportions of the keyboard on my old sony vaio sr27. the design of the 700m is gorgeous. the s-video out was a definite plus as not many other laptops offer this. it handles everything i throw at it, though i don't do much gaming, require much graphics, or hardcore processing. for what i use this for, it is extremely fast. it is astonishinly quiet. the fan turns on once in a while and just for a couple of seconds. other than that, it is virtually silent. the bottom of the laptop doesn't get extremely hot as i have seen in previous laptops, but then again that could be due to the fact that centrino processes at lower temperatures. the speakers are rather impressive for the size of the laptop. it is crisp, clear, and picks up all sounds. i was sceptical of the sound quality that might come out of the speakers mounted below the screen, but that was all quelled when i popped in a dvd. having read the reviews, i decided to forego the regular battery and bought 2 double capacity batteries. though the battery does protrude from the back, it is still small and isn't visible when using the laptop, so it doesn't really bother me. the sd card reader is a plus since i have a digital camera which uses this card format. so instead of having to grab the adapter and hooking it up (which really isn't that much a hassle), i can just swap the card into the 700m and presto. i haven't had the clicking hard drive problem others have had and feel fortunate not to have had any problems with software or hardware.
just to be picky and let you readers know exactly what's going on with the 700m, i'm going to blunt. there is no internal bluetooth which is quite disappointing due to the fact that the purpose of such a small laptop is portability and convenience. wouldn't a bluetooth wireless mouse be very convenient instead of carrying a wired one, or even an adapter for a non-bluetooth mouse? i don't like the headphone, mic, firewire ports in the front of the laptop. the ac adapter being on the right side is a bit annoying since i am right handed. the white border around the edges of the laptop(about 3/4 inch) could have been reduced in width and used to make the screen and keyboard wider. i wish there were some multimedia button on top of the keyboard. there is enough space there for buttons such as a couple of programmable buttons, media controls for video/audio. laptops now are able to play movies/music without booting the OS. i would have liked to see that here to be used in conjunction with the non-existant dedicated media buttons. the optical drive is removal and i don't think there was a swappable battery for that slot. the mouse button are clunky as all the reviews have mentioned. they don't seem to be properly installed. they are loose and might make some noise when tapping the laptop, or very rarely when a disk is spinning in the drive. this only happened once to me, but i just tapped the mouse buttons in order to reposition them and the very light noise stopped. the hard drive spins at 4200 rpm. i really would have liked to see something faster, but again i reiterate that i am being purposely extremely picky.
but even with these requests, i still give the 700m an 8 out of 10. it's a gorgeous piece of machinery that handles like a bmw m5. but what do i know, i've never driven the m5. but i do recommend this laptop. though i may have listed all those little minor complaints, i was just being picky so that you can have an exact idea of the layout for the 700m
hope this helps for those of you who are looking for a new laptop

The Dell 700m is for the person on the go that needs portablity with performance to run the basics.
Pros: Very light and compact, feature rich, bright widescreen display, an inexpensive solution
Cons: USB ports on left side, needs upgrade to 8 cell battery for longer use, performance is a little sluggish when not plugged in. The smaller keyboard takes some getting used to.
Before I continue, here are the basic specs of the machine I purchased:
P4 2.0Ghz, 400Mhz FSB
512mb RAM (Single DIMM)
Win XP Pro
24X CD-ROM, with DVD Playback
8 Cell 5 hour Batt and 4 Cell Auxiliary Batt.
Preface:
When I started looking for my new notebook a month ago, I was incredibly impressed the first time I saw the Dell 700m. I was at a conference and I saw it peaking out of a woman's purse. At first I thought to myself, Pocket PC, but I soon discovered the truth. I could not help but think immediately that the 700m was for me. Not only that but I am a loyal Dell customer to begin with. Every experience I have had with their customer service has been top notch and their pricing is unmatched due to their ability to scale down manufacturing time. Also, since their PCs are built to order, they are warehousing costs are significantly scaled down. They pass the cost reductions to their customers.
As I started going through the research, I was impressed with its score of 8.1 by CNETs reviewer. Other customers who reviewed this machine did not think as highly of it, but frankly I think most people who review products are only doing so because they have had a bad experience. Most of those reviews had no text, no basis, and no clear cut reasons why they felt this machine was so inferior. So that is what I am here for today; to give you all an honest review that you can compare to the CNET review.
The Review: (no benchmark tests)
Lets start with the looks; it is gorgeous. The USB slots are on the left side of the keyboard which is not great for a right handed user who wants to plug in a mouse; the rest of the layout is great. Reviewers have pointed out that there is no Firewire input but personally I have never had any devices that use Firewire anyway. On the left side of the machine are two USB ports, SD card reader, external monitor plug, and 1 PCMCIA (PCI Slot these days?). On the right hand side is the modem, Ethernet, modem, AC power input, S-Video and CD/DVD drive. The 1394 connection, microphone, and Headphone jacks are housed in the front. No device connections are in the back of the unit because that is where the battery is connected. This is a great feature because when using the machine on AC power with a fully charged battery you can disconnect the battery. This will increase the batteries life span. Laptops I have used in the past have the battery built into the bottom of the machine leaving a huge hole in it when it is removed. If you buy this machine, remember to take advantage of this feature.
The mouse is a touchpad that has been sprayed silver to match the rest of the equipment. The mouse pad however does have a form of scroll despite some reviewer's claims. It is there; just different. As for the sound you here when you hit the mouse buttons, maybe it is loud, but not annoying. They feel sturdy and well made. If I click and actually disturb someone, I will be shocked. I would not even mention it but some other reviewers have.
The speakers are built-in underneath the screen. They sound crisp and clear. Past machines I have used put the speakers on the base. They have been too small and are muffled by your wrists. These speakers sound great and are heard perfectly due to their positioning.
The reflective screen is awesome. You can view the screen from deeper angles and you don not get the fading when the sun hits it directly. Glare has not been a problem either. The reflective screen was reviewed as BAD by the CNET reviewer, but he just seems to be one of the people that do not like it. Oh well, very rarely do a products come out that are 100% perfect for everyone. The screen is 12.1 inches. Although it is not very large, it is widescreen and has plenty of real estate to have multiple windows open. Seeing text is not a problem either. You are sitting so much closer to a laptop anyway, do you really need 15inches? That is for you to decide.
Performance is good. It is perfect for word processing, checking emails, and surfing the web. I loaded World of Warcraft and was not impressed. It runs a little choppy and is not a power hungry game. Admittedly, I have not tried it with a wired internet connection yet, which could boost the performance a little. Bottom line is it is not going to satisfy any hardcore gaming needs; however, it wasn’t designed for that. In fact, none of the light and thins are made for gaming. You will need a gaming machine to play power hungry titles, but they weigh 9 pounds and are very large. Travel with a 9 pounder day in and day out and let me know how you feel.
Some other features of the 700m are:
Built in Wi-Fi. In fact, I am writing this review in a Mc Donalds, connected to the net for the low cost of $2.95.
Graphics are run off the system memory which is a downside. However, so far viewing regular video has been fine. DVDs and downloaded shows play nicely. As previously stated, World of Warcraft did not seem to like it, but the game was playable despite some choppiness.
There is a built-in SD card reader which is great for Palm owners and owners of any device that uses an SD card. Great feature!
In closing, this machine is sturdy, light-weight, well equipped, and beautiful. If you are a person on the go and need a laptop, I recommend it. If you need to do any hard core graphic design or gaming, look elsewhere, as this machine is not going to bring you joy. Personally, I am probably going to give the 700m to one of my business partners that will get better use out of it than I will. I do not dislike this machine, I am just a power snob. I would rather add a pound or two and get a machine that could handle stronger apps a little better, while my associate's main purpose will be getting emails on the road. However, this machine scores an 8.9 for what it was designed for. I will likely try the Inspiron 6000.
Please email/IM me at rimes93@aol.com if you would like to ask me any questions about this machine.

A fantastic machine.
Pros: Great looking screen, solid keyboard, powerful performance. Good price!
Cons: Poor battery life, keyboard may be small for some...integrated graphics.
I get lots of compliments on it's size and weight, and typically hear "That is the nicest screen I have ever seen on a laptop". I'm running off of a 1.6 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, 80 Gig HD, etc. Believe it or not I actually use this for my web design company, and it handles everything quite well. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and ImageReady all open at one time tends to have issues when switching between apps, but once it's focused on one application it really cranks out the speed. The keyboard is incredibly sturdy, feels as good as my old IBM Thinkpad, however the keys are a tad bit smaller than standard keyboards. No matter what anybody tells you, you will get used to it within a week. The most difficult thing about the keyboard was the ", . /" keys are only half the size of the already small other keys. But other than that, it is a joy to type on.
The screen is absolutely stunning, definitely a real eye catcher. The gloss can be distracting in areas of high sunlight and reflections, but I find that when I crank the brightness up, it appropriately quashes the problem. Very high resolution, 1280x800, widescreen, looks great when watching DVD's and nice with games too.
The Pentium M chip that it uses (up to 2.0 GHz) is the Dothan series - despite the fact that they now have the new Sonoma chipset out, still works very well. I run off the lowest end chip, the 1.6 and it still runs everything incredibly well.
The cons, the battery life is only about 2 hours with the 4 cell battery, which I think is unacceptable for a quasi-ultra portable like this. However, if you buy the optional 8-cell battery it increases it to around 5, which is plentiful. The Pentium M chip does a great job of controlling battery life. Consider getting both a 4 cell and an 8 cell on the side, as the 8-cell adds like half a pound to it's weight and protrudes out of the back.
The only other con - the graphics card! I didn't buy it to play games, but I sometimes wish I had bought another laptop when I try to play one. Although it does play most 3d games quite well (WoW, Sims, Call of Duty) just to name a few - you can definitely feel the need for some standalone graphic memory when you're doing some heavy graphic work.
Overall, it scores a 9/10 - because I like everything about this machine except for the graphics card, since 10/10 is considered "Perfect", this machine falls short of that solely because of the integrated graphics. If you're not using it for games at all - then you'll easily rate this a 10/10.

Not perfect, but better than most
Pros: Size, portability, display
Cons: Pointing device, support
While part of my work as a trade-magazine editor involves soft-proof of pages and other graphics tasks, the majority of what I do involves text editing and email. The smaller-sized display is great for both. And, the fact that it's more-reflective than other screens is a matter of personal taste -- I often work outside in bright sunlight, and I've found the 700m to be one of the easiest to read, and the reflection factor is greatly reduced by the intense brightness of the display.
The touchpad does feel like a cheapo plastic addition. I added a $20 USB mini-mouse, which I prefer to any touchpad/mini-stick laptop configuration, and disable the touchpad for anything but checking email.
My CD-drive door latch broke after about 10 uses, and the email-only response I got for tech support was a bit disconcerting. It took three separate emails to convince a real person that I needed a new drive. (The automatic "let me guess your problem" doesn't help, Mr. Dell.) Once someone understood my problem, the drive arrived via air express the next day.
OK, it's not a wow design, and the long-life battery sticks out. But this is a tool, not a fashion accessory.

An awesome laptop with few flaws.
Pros: light weight, small, excellent screen, very powerful, inexpensive
Cons: smaller keyboard, DVD burner is loud, battery life is short for a portable (get the extended battery)
P.S. Get the extended battery because it will last about 4-5 hours and remember to change your windows font size to your own preference, otherwise, the text might be too small for you to look at for hours.

Fast & light
Pros: Small, portable, & fast
Cons: Small keyboard, short battery life with standard battery
The Screen is very sharp and very bright. My only complaint about the screen is the glare when it is viewed at certain angles. This is possibly from the glossy coating that is on it. As far as power consumption goes the extended battery is a must, as this machine will only last around 2 1/2 hours on the standard battery.
Now that I got the stuff I didn't like out of the way, on a more positive note. This is a good looking machine, and I get alot of compliments on it. The 700m has a very small form factor which makes it very light and easy to take anywhere. My 700m is very fast due to the 1.8ghz processor 512mb of ram and the 60gb 7200rpm travelstar hd. It takes about 1 minute for my machine to boot up.
For someone looking for a small & fast notebook to travel with, I consider this machine a very good option as long as you don't need to do any serious typing. As far as business use goes, the small keyboard makes it difficult to do any serious typing.
I've owned this machine for over a year now and it is still running strong. My 700m is configured with a 1.8ghz processor, 7200rpm travelstar, 1gb of ram, extended battery(this is a must have!), and windows xp professional.
Weaknesses: Cramped keyboard, but you get used to it. Other than that I have no serious issues. Possibly because once I got my 700m I ripped out the old hard drive and threw in a travelstar with a fresh install of xp pro(highly recommended mod!!),weak stock battery.
Strengths: Small form factor, cdrw/dvd drive, this machine is very durable. Wifi.

Overall A Great Notebook
Pros: the screen is beautiful, it is lightweight
Cons: the half size of some keys, initial hard drive tick, bad battery life
As far as the computer, the battery life could be a lot better, and the keyboard is a little small. Other than that, the computer is great. The screen is vivid and the computer is light as well as fast.

Portable, Afordable, Looks great, Light and Fast thanks to Pentium M Processor
Pros: Screen is really sharp. Light and Runs fast. It has a built in SD card reader which doesn't seem like a big deal but you soon find out is really handy for moving pictures and data from your pda.
Cons: Extended battery sticks out a bit awardly which doesn't go with the overall slime design of the notebook. Had a problem with a usb port but the driver reset tool built in by dell fixed it immediatly

Lightest and BEST value Added ULTRAportable, Fantastic Screen
Pros: LIGHT, cheap, fast, no overheating, meets and EXCEEDS basic computing needs
Cons: STD Battery is bad (get extended), Hard disk click(MINOR)
After you use this (and I mean carry it around), you'll never go back to those 3KG souped up "mammoths" again!
Yup! The 3KG+ mammoths are super duper but unless your name is Clark Kent, it is less tiring and more cost effective to get a desktop if you want to play the latest games etc.
For basic mobile needs on the go, no other laptop can beat this little fella!
The Wifi (with a 2915 dual band a/b/g card) is very sensitive and managed to pick up stray hotspots in my area. Which is definitely a good thing.
I upgraded my laptop with 1.8Ghz(400Mhz), 1024 ram, 80GB (5400) hardisk. XP starts up in less than a minute. WOW!
As long as you get the extended battery (a MUST), it should be no problem for 5 hours.
As for the hard disk clicks, my HD is virtually silent. The clicks are only noticeable if you lean very low downwards towards the laptop (imagine a dog bending down to drink water from the floor), which is unlikely. Anyway, my breathing is louder than the clicks! Despite the many posts, what annoying HD clicks are there??
The screen is also superb and the laptop can function as a portable DVD player if you like.
TOP marks to DELL!!!!!

Beautiful screen, quiet except the hard drive clicks
Pros: Beautiful screen, fast, cheap
Cons: TERRIBLE dell support (if needed), clicking hard drive, poor standard battery life
I went for the 80G hard drive, and the extended battery... GET EXTENDED BATTERY!!!
The hard drive that came with my 700m was an 80G Western Digital scorpio drive (WD800VE) It's very quiet most of the time, however, sometimes it starts clicking when the computer sits idle and there is no reason to access the hard drive. It's a very light noise, and the room must be pretty silent to get annoyed with it... but I' easily annoyed. I think it's the power-saving options turning the hard drive on and off that causes the clicking noise, because there is no noise when the computer is working. I tried to disable these options (though there is little support for this if you get the western digital drive), and it seems to have worked at the expense of more battery life. It would be nice to have an "acoustics management" option with this hard drive!
Overall, it's a really good portable for the price. At this price (after a $600 off coupon), I'm willing to live with a few flaws.

Pros: Very cool looking, light, potentially a great buy
Cons: I think I got the empty plastic model they put out for display
I thought it would be fun to post the actual excerpt from my support email about the paper clip advice...I guess Dells version of onsite help is a little different than mine.
"With the system turned off, remove the drive and insert a straightened paper
clip into the small hole near the eject button. You may need to push
several times before the tray releases. The tray may open only a little.
If the tray moves at all, pull it the rest of the way out. Remove any
disk from the drive. Reseat the drive in the bay and turn the laptop
back on."

VOLUME CONTROLS ARE ON KEYBOARD!!!
Pros: Size, Screen, Memory, HDD, Weight, Quiet and PRICE!!!!
Cons: Battery Life
I have small hands so the keyboard is fine with me but for people with larger hands they may have to adjust to the keyboard. This is a laptop so of course the bottom will be warm but it's not bad AT ALL, my bath water is hotter than this notebook. When the temp rises inside the fan kicks in which is super quiet I don't even notice it's on until I put my hands by the vent.
You'll really need the extra battery with this, the 4 cell is as advertised. Besides the battery I don't have any complaints I love this machine.
I saved $650 with online coupons for extra battery, 512MB, 60GB, WiFi,and 1.8Ghz bringing my price to like $1200 so this was a great deal.

An ultaportable with 1.5hr battery life?
Pros: Biggest pro is the cheap price compared to other ultraportable, but be careful, Dell is trying to trick you!! For an ultraportable, spec wise, this computer is on par with almost any of the other major ultraportables! But...

Pros: The price you pay for the size and capabilities that you get makes this a winner in my book. The screen is beautiful and the power is there when you need it.
Cons: Battery life is not good at all which makes the 8-cell battery a must have rather than an option. Also, the mouse pad keys aren't quite up to par but this isn't really that significant. The best word to describe it would be clunky.

Portability is key
Pros: It's small and compact with all the features you normally expect out of desktop replacements. The price is very reasonable.
