"Fantastic Laptop, Great Price with Online Coupon" on by thesimulacra

Pros: Fast, sleek looking, keys are not too small at all (and i have big hands), great price

Cons: Dell always pre-installs tons of advertisment software (Free 90 Days to AOL, etc) that's annoying to have to spend a half hour uninstalling when you first get the computer.

Summary: Though CNET may think that the price on the 710m is too high, we should all know by now that Dell online discount coupons are widely available for free that will get you sometimes several hundreds of dollars more off of your price. For me, I was able to find a $750 off coupon for any laptop over $1999, and I got my $2200 computer for under $1500. That's with a 2.0ghz Centrino, 1gb ddr ram, an 80gb hard drive, DVD-ROM/CDRW drive, windows xp pro, an extra extended life (5.5 hrs) battery, and a 2 year warranty with 2 years complete care accident protection.

Personally I don't understand how CNET's review can imply that the VAIO S series laptop with similar specs is somehow a better laptop. It's only 7% faster at similar specs, but you'll pay (after Dell Discounts, coupon or no) several hundreds of dollars more for it than the 710m.

Also, I was surprised to find it's incredibly quiet (I leave it on next to my bed at night and I can't hear it at all going to sleep) and it runs cooler than any other laptop I've used.

If I had to find a problem with it I'd say it was annoying to have to uninstall the tons of useless pre-installed ads (the desktop was FULL of icons for these things when I first booted it up). Also like the 700m before it the extended life battery adds a bit of weight (about .5lbs) and sticks out of the back of the laptop by about an extra half-inch.

P.S. Does CNET really think people care all that much about multimedia controls on the case of the system, I've probably used those kinds of buttons less than 10 times in 5 years of having them on various computers.

"Perfect Portable Computer" on by mattclark25

Pros: Size, Bright Screen, Good Wi-Fi Range, Battery life

Cons: Needs more than 2 USB ports

Summary: I bought this computer for use as a portable and as a desktop replacement. So far it has been perfect. Excellent battery life and power on the wireless network. The screen is well lit and easy to read and it weighs less than 5 pounds. This computer has replaced my Tohiba satelite 1905 and made my life more portable. The only issue that I have is the limited amount of USB ports (2) and their placement on the left of the computer. Otherwise this is the perfect computer for anyone.

"the best value ultra-portable" on by mricson

Pros: lightweight (4.1 lbs), small, excellent screen, quiet disk drive

Cons: size of higher capacity battery (but not that bad)

Summary: I bought this ultra-portable through the Navy Exchange so I got it cheaper than most but I would have easily spent more if I had to. This is the best valued ultra-portable out their. period. Forget the Sony Viaos. This is great for school (thats what I use it for). It is the same width as a regular textbook and fits easily in a bookbag. The battery life is llooonnnngggg (about 5 hours) with the higher capacity battery.

Forget CNET's con of no multimedia controls, you don't need that junk with this. Another thing, the optional dvd drive is so quiet you have to check to see if it's even running. The screen is awesome. It is small (12 inches) but, it's good enough, a lot better than a portable dvd player and almost the same size. Highly, highly recommend this for business users and students. The claim CNET makes about this model using old parts is not that big of deal.

Get this laptop if your looking for portability!

"Great computer for frequent travelers" on by seashellen

Pros: Very portable, attractive, fast, powerful, with a great screen

Cons: Keyboard may be slightly small for those with big hands

Summary: I LOVE this laptop. Thanks to a collection of coupons/discounts, I got a fully-loaded 710 for less than $1,500, and so far it's been worth every penny.

I work in interactive advertising and travel quite a bit, so it was important to me to have a machine that covers all of my interactive needs, while proving portable enough for plane trips. It's all of those things.

Dell created an attractive package, too... most people comment on it, and one techie friend of mine said, "THAT's a Dell?!" The screen is also fantastic... the only issue with it so far is the keyboard. It's actually perfect for me, as I have small hands, but a friend of mine with big hands said he kept missing the period & comma keys (though he said he'd be fine with practice). And another big guy friend of mine already owns the 700 (same computer essentially) and he has no problem with it.

Highly recommended... just make sure you get a good deal... when I priced this out without the discounts, it was $2,400. I recommend trying a few configurations online and then phoning in your order... the operators seem to have access to special 10% "manager's discounts" and other ideas that can lower the price.

"Beautiful Little Computer" on by kubasic

Pros: Long battery life, Great speakers, DVD drive on site, SD card reader! Highly portable

Cons: Glossy screen is easy to get dirty, A tad bit heavy with the larger battery pack

Summary: This little computer is just amazing. It goes everywhere, weighs as much as a textbook, and is plainly excellent for anything BUT graphic-intense gaming.

    Updated
There are many second fnction button media controls, and something I newly discovered, there is a scroll area in the mousepad on the right side if you move your finger up and down on the side while also touching the touchpad's rim. There is also an auto-scroll feature if you do the same movement once and remove your hand from it, it scrolls all the way to that direction until it reaches the end. Try it out and get the feel of it.
