great investment for those seeking portability
Pros: light s as a feather, good battery life, ultra sleek
Cons: runs hot, dreadful audio
Sacrifices had to be made to achieve the portability factor, which was my biggest consideration--so it seems unfair to mention them. Of course it runs hot with no fan to cool it--no surprise there. My main concern is that the high heat might be damaging the components.
It does seem as though a better speaker might have been possible--it is truly pitiful.
Nonetheless--I got it to be ultra-portable and work efficiently--and that it does very well. I also think it is a nice looking machine and I do get frequent compliments as to its good looks--I only mention this since a few folks here have derided that aspect.

Watch out if you actually do any computing
Pros: Chic, light, great battery life, quiet: no fan
Cons: No fan: Performance degrades to 1/10th when hot
Unfortunately for me, i didn't discover this fatal flaw until after the 21 day return period. So I am stuck selling this on Craigslist to someone who just wants to write in a cafe.
I have purchased Dells for almost 10 years, (maybe 8 systems during that time) and they just lost me as a satisfied customer. Firstly I have to say their support really has become dismal - all nice people, but nearly all clueless.

Nice traveling laptop, even when not traveling
Pros: Super light, surprisingly good keyboard, decent screen, silent
Cons: Can get warm with extended use (no fan)
The X40 has a better keyboard -- and if you are spending a lot of time writing, then that might be a deciding factor. But the X1 has a very good (but not great) keyboard.
The fanless X1 wins over the X40 (although you can find fanless 1.0 GHz Thinkpad X40s), despite the increased heat.
The X1 screen is better than the X40 -- both in terms of brightness, but also because of the widescreen format which allows you easier access to 2+ concurrent windows. Plus movies look better!
Both X1 and X40 share the same type of 1.8" HD that are shared in the new iPods. However the X1 felt faster -- which I know is not a function of increased HD speed. So maybe Dell loads less unnecessary stuff on their HDs than IBM?
I miss the in-keyboard pointer stick that IBMs are known for and that other Dells also have -- but the trackpad is fine for most use. If I were to do more with this stuck at a desk then a BlueTooth mouse might be a nice accessory.
Lastly, it should be noted that this is not really a Dell, but a Samsung Q30 with a Dell label slapped on (and a few other minor modifications, like missing the 6-pin Firewire port, but having a 4-pin one instead). The Samsung sells for much more $$ and can be had in colors.
But all in all, the Dell is the better deal (espec if you get a lower end model and add your own RAM). Once you cross the $2000 barrier, the Dell loses the value part of the equation, espec since you can get Thinkpad X41s for less.

Great laptop for the road warrior
Pros: Light, small, everthing in one package, great screen, very small power pack
Cons: external optical drive, gets hot so not for the lap
Follows the modern trend of no PS2 ports, so those who want to use an external mouse or/and keyboard will need to purchase USB models or get a PS2 to USB converter. It includes 2 x USB (one used for the external optical drive if connected), Firewire 400 (1394), Modem, 10/100 network, VGA, mic and speaker connectors. No PC Card (PCMCIA) slot but what would you put in it?
