Good value, but they definitely sacrificed quality

Pros: Windows XP option, very cheap, little bloatware, very quiet, matte screen option

Cons: Plastic and cheap design, bad keyboard, sketchy build quality, looks ugly, bad speakers

Review: I'm very happy that Dell decided to release a laptop that's not filled with bloatware and Windows Vista. However, the Dell Vostro feels very cheap. Maybe it's because they had to cut corners due to the reduced revenue from not allowing software developers to put whatever they wanted onto the laptop.

The look of the Dell Vostro is very cheap-looking and plasticky. I've had friends who thought it was an older Dell laptop from the 90s. The hinge on the screen has already cracked even though I have not dropped it yet. Also, the left mouse button will sometimes click twice even if I press it once. This is VERY annoying.

Not to mention that the keyboard is lackluster and poorly designed. It's very easy to accidently touch the touchpad when using the keyboard, and the keyboard itself sometimes doesn't register when I press a button. I've never had this problem typing on other types of laptops.

A few good points are that they allow a matte screen option, which is useful for those who don't like glossy screens that can have much more glare, and the laptop is also very quiet.

Aside from all this, you're going to find it very hard to find a laptop with the same performance specs at this price. With Dell's seemingly biweekly "sales", you can get a good performing laptop for under $500. However, sometimes I wish I would've just waited till Christmas sales to get a similarly-performing laptop from another company with better build quality.

not too bad but would've saved more to upgrade on certain items

Pros: cheap, good for doing basic computing

Cons: letter "K" key keeps popping out, battery that comes with it supposed to be good for 1 hour but lasts less than that.

Review: This is not a bad computer, good for basic everyday work. I also purchased a 9 cell 85W battery and was told by Dell Tech Support that it would last 4-8 hours but they "weren't sure" - huh? I plugged it in and had it charge overnight (8+ hours) as was told by the Dell Tech to do because the longer I charge it the longer it would last, I just turned on my laptop w/out the powercord and it says that i have 4:08 hours and in just a few SECONDS (NOT MINUTE) I checked the battery again and I now have 4:06 hours. The tech support did not sound sure of how long the battery would last for, said he wasn't certain. Not too happy about the lack of knowledge or certainty I received from Dell Tech. All in all, again, it's not a bad computer, it is light and for the money you really can't go wrong plus...I had a choice to either have XP or Vista...and choose XP. Also, it is worth the wait to get the Tru Life Display Screen and not what it comes with...the picture is good but I should've waited!

DONT OVERLOOK THIS BEAST

Pros: 2.00 GHz, black finish, thick yet light, crazy video card for integration

Cons: comes with only 512 but hey its a budget machine

Review: I can already tell that this machine is instantly going to get overlooked because of the 512 part of the specs. But trust me this machine is more than you think. It comes with a ATI Xpress 1150 256mb graphics card. I dont know about you but that seems unreal for a laptop for only 449. So finally you can game for under 600 bucks. I say 600 because you still might wanna upgrade you memory to atleast 1gb and a game. So trust me dont overlook this b-b-b-beast. Im going to give this a 10 because I figure you have atleast enough money for the memory upgrade and the video card makes up for the RAM anyways. Im going to play guild wars and maybe a littly BF2142 now on my new vostro so peace.
