"Not Pleased"
Pros: maybe good for gaming --
Cons: not good for high end video editing and animation
Summary: When I first booted it up, I noticed that there was resolution problem right away. The display was very dark and the letters and icons were very distorted.
Right away I contacted Dell to complain about the problem. They acted as though I was the only user in the World that had ever complained about this, which is hard for me to believe (especially after reading more recent reviews).
They took me me through tons of troubleshooting steps, which I knew would not resolve the issue. They even went a step further to have me download a new driver, which I was quite sure would not resolve the issue as well.
We went on and on for sometime before they agreed to send out a replacement. I received the replacement and it was almost worst than the first one.
I contacted Dell again and ended up requesting a full refund for the untit. For 3100, you would want better quality.
I have not tested out the Toshiba, however, I have gotten a chance to see the display which is alot better.
I purchased the Dell for Animation and Video editing. So far, the Dell M170 is not a good idea for animation and editing.
On the brighter note, they agreed that I can get a full refund, so I am happy.
Please look around before purchasing.

buddy u had the DPI setting screwed up
i know that the problem cuz i have one myself
right click go to display properties
click on the settings tab
click on the advanced button
change the DPI setting to normal(96)DPI
THERE FIXED UR PROBLEM YOU SHOULD RECONSIDER BUYING IT NOW -
I had both of these problems with mine that I just bought!
The letters and pictures were blurry which was an easy fix with an online pc scan from dell which detected that the resolution I was using might do that and it fixed it for me!
The display was dark also! I called dell and the issue was resolved be changing the display brightness setting in BIOS!
Before u go to BIOS dont forget to check if you can adjust the level of brightness by pressing Fn with an 'UP arrow" on your keyboard! -
How can you say anything in November of 2005, when the M170 was not out until 2/24/2006, you and anyone like you saying anything about this modell are full of S--T, i never read this stuff anyhow, i go by CNET reviews and only there reviews, they should drop this on-line "user opinion" it means nothing to me or the readers, I just got my M170 and it's a #10!

You could just change the DPI. I think alot of people can fix that problem theirselves

Sorry, but this is not a Dell issue. It's a Microsoft Windows issue. And it's easily fixed, if you can say it needs fixing, which it doesn't. Dell, and a few other high end notebook makers think that the DPI needs to be higher on high resolution LCD displays. Just adjust it properly and you'd have the result you are looking for.
This notebook is not for novice users. -
I just bought the M170 myself and I encountered a similar 'distortion' problem that you seem to be describing. My problem manifested by having some web page text looking crisp and clear like an LCD should but some text (like the tabs section in hotmail) looking distorted. It is fixed by going to your desktop properties->general tab->DPI setting. Mine was set to Large size (120DPI) which distorted some text. Setting it back to Normal size (96DPI) fixed it.
