Short-term good, long-term bad

Pros: Affordable in the short-term, decent performance for the price.

Cons: Confirmed my fears that Gateway computers are poorly engineered/designed.

Review: I build my own desktop systems but wanted a cheap laptop for looking up recipes in the kitchen, browsing the 'net while watching TV, etc.
I'd always heard of reliability issues with Gateways and I worked on some friends' Gateway desktops...I wasn't impressed. I vowed I'd never buy one but the price was right on the MT3422 so I went against my better judgment and picked one up.
The computer worked well for our intended purposes for the first 17 months (warranty is 12 months). Then the hard drive crashed. I replaced the hard drive and it worked fine for another month. Now it won't POST...I hit the power button and the power light comes on, the dvd drive spins momentarily, but then nothing...can't even access the BIOS. I've done some research and numerous other users have experienced the same issue. It appears to be a problem with the motherboard and of course Gateway wants 60% of the total system cost ($300) for a new motherboard. According to other postings I've read where people had purchased an extended warranty, the motherboard was replaced but issue resurfaced about 8 months down the line. So there are clearly some design issues here (I'm guessing heat-related failures because it definitely runs on the warm side). We called Gateway to see if they could provide any info and we were told we'd have to pay $60 in order to talk to them for 30 minutes.
Long story short, this is the first and last Gateway product I will ever purchase. If you do choose to buy a Gateway, I'd highly recommend purchasing the longest extended warranty available because based on my experiences their systems are very poorly designed.

p.s. Forgot to mention, the wireless range was horrible...probably poorly designed antennae. Both my work laptops (IBM T42 and Dell Latitude D630) can access my wireless network anywhere in my house. The MT3422 only had a range of about 30 feet. Beyond 30 feet it would sporadically drop connectivity and wouldn't reconnect until you were within 10 feet of the access point.

Decent Laptop, but sorry wireless

Pros: love the form factor and the metal on the case. nice screen and resolution, decent keyboard.

Cons: reartek wireless card is defective, drops connections constantly, very frustrating. Gateway's website is clueless about the problem. Vista totally blows and its hard to get drivers for XP.

Review: this laptop would be fantastic if the dang wireless card wasn't total garbage. I must constantly reboot to get the wireless card to connect. this happens with every single wireless network that I have tried to connect to. It usually will only stay connected for about 45 min at a time, then randomly and suddenly drops that connection. the only thing that consistently fixes the connection problems is a robbot, and that is only about 85% successful. sometimes, even a reboot does nothing to help and you have to reboot again, sometimes a 3rd reboot is necessary. its very frustrating and compltely ruins the whole laptop experience. the only thing worse is that Gateway's website is ZERO hep on the issue. I work in the IT field and can replace parts if I have the appropriate info, but I can't find squat on the Gateway website about how to remove this card and replace it. I could get a USB wireless card, but I don't like those because I tend to break them. besides, that's why I bought a laptop with a bult-in wireless card.

Great laptop, especially for the price

Pros: Nice appearance, surprisingly rugged -- has survived over 1 year of heavy daily use with no visible damage. Price was unbeatable for a laptop with these specs, especially with a nice appearance to boot. HDD and RAM are easily accessible.

Cons: No internal microphone, so-so battery life, though no worse than other machines in its class. Keyboard is not the best, but acceptable -- similar in feel to a Toshiba.

Review: I bought this laptop for an immediate need, on a tight budget while traveling to replace an aging ThinkPad that was not up to the task, and have not been disappointed. The overall performance of the machine is good, even running Windows Vista. RAM upgrade is certainly worthwhile as the machine ships with a paltry 1GB. About the keyboard - the feel was initially terrible, though with use it has gotten much better, and has not failed, whereas when I used a Toshiba Satellite daily, I had to replace the keyboard every 4 to 6 months. I miss the Keyboard Light LED from the ThinkPad, but overall, the Gateway has been an excellent workhorse, especially for a consumer grade machine. If the machine had a slightly better keyboard and an internal mic, I would have given it 5 stars.

Cons: Vista sucks!

Review: Good laptop for the money, works fast with Windows XP, Vista should be wiped out!

It does what I need it to do

Pros: light, small, inexpensive, vibrant screen, good battery life

Cons: left palmrest gets warm, buttons on the touchpad are hard to click

Review: I purchased this computer late last week to bring with me to college this fall. It was on sale at Best Buy for $549.99, down from the original price of $699.99. It is far faster than my 2 year old compaq desktop, and runs much smoother after turning off the Aero effect in vista. I think adding another gig of memory at some point in the near future would make this thing screaming fast. As I said in the cons, one of the negative things about the machine is that the left side gets really warm. I think that's a characteristic of dual core processors, however. The buttons on the touchpad are also really stiff. I get good wireless connectivity in my house, even all the way downstairs in the living room. I think this will be the perfect machine for me and i would definitely recommend it if you're looking for an inexpensive, 14 inch laptop.
