"Sleek Design - Great Technology - Flawless Performance"
Pros: value, price, memory installed, performance
Cons: None so far (have used the Laptop for about 5 weeks)
Summary: I purchased a refurbished Gateway MT6821 from TechforLess.com and am thrilled with the Laptop and TechforLess. I have only had the Laptop for about 1 month, and it has performed flawlessly. It was Like New in the original box, and when I started it up, went through the typical new computer setup options (as if it was factory new). So indeed, for a refurbished unit, this was an excellent purchase.
At the unbelievable price point around $600, this is an amazing value. Even for a few hundred dollars more, you would be getting an excellent deal.
I wanted a Gateway, as my sister has a Gateway PC, and has for many years with no issues. This unit was to replace my dying HP Pavilion, which was not even 4 years old (hardware component failures).
The Gateway MT6821 has all the features of brand new (in January 2008) models at the big box stores, with the exception of a built-in web cam, which I did not need. It is packed with 2 GIGS of Memory (a must for me), a 160 GB hard drive, and Vista Premium. It came with usual suite of MS Works, and a trial of MS Office. It also has either 3 or 6 months of McAfee. And I have yet to decide if I will keep that.
Technology wise, it runs QUIET and does not run hot. The fan kicks on (more often when in heavy use) and keeps it cool. The DVD burned a dual-layer disc first time used, and has not failed me once. And it did so with the OEM version of Cyberlink pre-installed (pretty amazing considering a past experience I had with them). It starts up, goes to sleep and wakes up FAST and without any issues! I have not had to deal with Gateway, McAfee, Microsoft or any other support for hardware or software on this Laptop. That is quite a compliment in and of itself. I use the unit primarily for DVD authoring and video processing (intense applications for any device), and it works great. I do the average amount of email, office applications and surfing the web as well.
In addition to my delight with the Laptop, I am equally thrilled with TechforLess.com. They were amazing. Price is unbeatable, and they offer a 3-day return policy (unheard of). I did a lot of research, looking at big-box stores (namely Best Buy and Circuit City), as well as dozens of online retailers like NewEgg, TigerDirect, eBay, even Walmart and Target. ONLY TechforLess had the model I wanted and needed, at the best price, and with the assurance of a return or exchange option! Most sellers of used equipment offer no return option (just the manufacturer?s warranty). To prove this point, I originally purchased a refurbished Gateway MT6707 from TechforLess which had hardware failure issues out of the box. I contacted TechforLess the same day, and was immediately offered a UPS Return shipment (at THEIR expense) and a full refund. A week later, they got additional models I was considering in stock, and I made the purchase of the MT6821. They did not even charge me shipping on the 2nd unit. So I was out nothing!
I realize my experience is (sadly) becoming a bit rare ? I was both satisfied with the Laptop and the Seller. So clearly, consider the Gateway MT6821, and absolutely consider TechforLess.com.
