"Buyer BEWARE worst company ever." on by KcMelt

Pros: Looks good on paper and thats about all

Cons: Super finger print magnet, customer service is a joke.

Summary: Tech support/Customer Service is a joke. 2 laptops later and waiting 2 months and still laptop doesnt work. Whats the answer "sorry, but your part is on backorder" and we dont have any timeline on how long it can take to get this part sent out. Then the other laptop was sent to me damaged. Customer service refused to send out another until they investigated the shipper. Needless to say three weeks later they said I will finally get a refund, almost 5 weeks later I get a partial refund because "we have the right to charge you a restocking fee". What the heck! I had to pay to restock a broken laptop. Check BBB.Org and look up the company complaints. This year alone its been rediculous. If I could ever go back to March 23rd I would never had purchased crap from them and stuck with Dell instead. Like I said, if you dont believe me then check out the BBB.Org for the company and see the results. They even lied on my company response, down right lied on it.

"Great computer all around" on by keeferino

Pros: fast, looks awesome, 10 key, 8800 NVIDIA

Cons: no fingerprint reader or bluetooth

Summary: It has a huge 17” screen that, when combined with the Nvidia 8800 make movies and games look amazing. It runs nearly all current games on their highest settings with no problem at all. You can also hook up another moniker or TV through the HDMI or VGA ports and the graphics are still top notch. The keyboard with the 10 key and multimedia buttons is set up really nice as well. The wireless works well and the firewire port comes in very handy for connecting external hard drives because the P-172s only has three usb ports. It lacks the fingerprint reader and Bluetooth that some machines ship with now, but most people do not put those features to use anyway. It does have a decent webcam and speakers which outperform those on similar laptops. If I could do it over again I think that I would have chosen a 15" Asus. It is more portable and cheap enough that I could have bought another moniter to use when I was home. But overall I love this computer. And I think the keyboard setup is great for gaming. But that's just me.

    Updated on Dec 22, 2008

Six months later and my P172x is still running strong. I have avast and ccleaner installed and they keep it running like new. The hard drive is filling up, but that's an easy fix. My only other complaint is that it seems to run a little hot. A few times during gaming or movie watching it has overheated and shutdown. The settings were on their highest setting, though. It doesn't seem to happen if I keep the back propped up an inch or so, so that it gets better air circulation. I don't think they are still being produced but if you can find one I would still recomend you buy it.

"Great Laptop for Gaming" on by cyanyde

Pros: Gaming, Lots of drive space, portable, big screen

Cons: Windows Vista, Not as fast as a desktop

Summary: I currently use this laptop for mostly gaming and motion graphics work. I play games like Left4dead2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and more with ease, gameplay is smooth and great. Unfortunately the load times are slightly slower than other gamers I play with who have desktops. Render times for my motion graphics is probably about average. Thinking about purchasing a desktop to improve on that. Also windows vista just plain sucks. Other than that, overall a good system.

"At $1200, this laptop is GREAT!" on by AndrewAcropora

Pros: Obviously the price blows similar quality laptops out of the water. Great Hardware. 64 bit vista.

Cons: Looks kind of silly. Cheap plastic casing on the laptop can be awkward at times. No button to deactivate the touchpad. Occasionally the fan goes crazy. CPU is the bottleneck.

Summary: Yes, this laptop has its shortcomings, but after I paid 1200 for this laptop, I would not trade it for anything else similarly priced. My Alienware M5700 finally crapped out so I had to buy a laptop in a hurry and almost looked over this one at Best Buy because the price was so low. It is a fantastic deal and plays pretty much everything at high quality. It's not my Alienware, but the hardware inside wouldn't make you think it's not. I've had my Gateway FX for four months now with no complaints at all. Need a laptop for school/gaming but don't want to break the bank? Purchase the Gateway FX notebook.
