"HP/Compaq does NOT Care about YOU!!" on February 10, 2005

Pros: none.

Cons: The fan and the SD card reader never worked. So, finally when I could afford not to have it for awhile I took it back to CompUSA to get it serviced. The laptop was sent back to Compaq since it was still under warranty. 2 weeks later I get my laptop back

"Great Battery Life and Speed" on January 6, 2005

Pros: Great Battery Life and pretty fast. The wireless works flawlessly everywhere.

Cons: It's a little thick. The screen is very unimpressive, however, I would probably dim any portable screen so much as to not make a difference on battery power.

Cons: Very unreliable, Hard drives die constantly, system board troubles

Summary: I am an IT professional that works on thon model in particular everyday. I have worked on well over 200 of these in the last year and I can tell you that the nc6000 is one of the most unreliable laptops I've ever used. HP/Compaq products are ok but this must be one of the worst. It has some great features such as the SD card reader and the built in wireless but to often those things don't work or stop working regularly. My company bought 50 of these for a remote sales force and over the past yearr I have replaced 30 of those with new hard drives and some have had to be replaced 2 times. We've also had a few come in dead upon arrival. One of the other problems I've noticed is major problems with the keyboard and touchpad need to be replaced often. Stay away from this product.

Pros: Venerable HP Quality, Fast, full featured, solid build

Cons: Can't get them anymore, or are the new ones just as good

Summary: I have owned notebooks for the past 19 years from the original IBM PC Convertible, to many models of IBM as recent as the T30, Compaq LTE and Evo's, Toshibas as recent as the Tecra S30.

Over the years I have found that IBM has always maintained consistent quality and design, Toshiba's quality has nosedived with my three Tecra S1's and dismal support and service, Compaqs have always been well engineered and durable. Although I have owned several HP products from printers to displays, this is my first HP notebook. But is it?? HP and Compaq have overlapped many of there strong points in their recent merger. This is evident with the NC6000 Business Notebook.

Calling this unit a "Business Notebook" is a perfect name, because this unit is all about business.

The first thing that impressed me was the solid construction, great screen, full features, and perfect integration with Windows XP (which was bundled with the unit).

I have seen many TFT screens over the years, and this one ranks right up there on a scale of 1-10 as a 9.5. Crisp, clear images and text and excellent colour rendition. This is evident on photos that have been printed at a professional lab and compared to the screen for accuracy.....BANG ON!!!

The versatility of removable hard drive, optical media, built in ethernet (both wireless and 10 base 100), modem, and bluetooth option (inexpensive add on that anyone can install) are all pluses in the Pro's column.

You can see how much thought went into the design of the unit when you open the screen and feel how solid the build is on the hinges. When you remove cover plates you can see the solid alloy frame underneath the plastic / composite cover. HP doesn't skimp on components like some companies do. They are determined to insure that users will have little down time with this unit.

I also enjoyed the tight integration with Windows XP Professional which was preinstalled and loaded on the system. I have been running this machine regularly and the battery life is about 3-4 hours depending on how aggressively I set the battery settings. Battery life, in a nutshell is superb.

In summary I strongly recommend anyone that wants a solid well built reliable notebook, consider this NC6000 or other HP business class notebooks. I am confident that the same build quality will apply. You shouldn't regret your decision to buy one.
