    "Excellent All-Around Laptop For $599!!!"

by jdcbomb on March 19, 2006

Pros: LONG Battery Life, Large 15" Screen, Sturdy Construction

    Cons: No External Volume Controls

Summary: i've had this laptop for a few months now, and i can now say it is one of the best purchases i have ever made.

first of all, the price at $599 (after $100 mail-in-rebate) is nearly unbeatable for what this baby can do.

of course, i had to upgrade the RAM with a 512MB module...but this only cost me around 40 bucks and 5 minutes of my time on eBay.

after that, the computer is pretty darn fast, and allows me to do some serious multi-tasking...i can have mozilla firefox, windows media player, microsoft word, microsoft excel, AIM, and other windows open, and this laptop (WITH The memory upgrade) will have no probem keeping up

it is disappointing that there are no external volume controls, but i easily fixed this problem by purchasing a wireless mouse that has volume controls that work seamlessly with the laptop:

    Logitech Media Play Wireless Mouse
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9340
    (again, 20 bucks on ebay!)

i'm befuddled as to why others are having problems with the brightness and clarity of the text...these are both easily adjusted by increasing the text size in windows...and using the keyboard to brighten the screen...my eyes stare at this machine several hours a day and i have no strain at all.

what is amazing IS the battery life...that pushes past 3.5 hours!!! with the wireless on, the battery life drops down to a still impressive 2.5 hours!

also, the weight is very light at 6.2 pounds...easily carried on to a plane, a car, or whereever you go...

overall, this laptop is a excellent laptop for the business professional or anyone frankly who doesn't need to spend that much to get a desktop replacement with all the bells and whistles (please also do not expect this to be a gaming machine!)

Purchased wireless mouse after the fact, which also worked flawlessly. Use the unit for travel, NOT as a desktop replacement. For less than $600 after rebates, this unit is one excellent machine. The wireless hooked into my home system with no effort, and the machine talks flawlessly with others on my network, including transfer of Pics and video.
