"Sleek, High Performance and Great Value" on by ivanizm

Pros: Size, Gloss Casing, Performance with Turion X2 and 1GB of dual channel DDR2 RAM (incredibly multitasking); top notch integrated graphics (NVIDIA 6150)

Cons: Battery life is just average, but still not a hindrance

Summary: I will respectfully disagree with CNET's underwhelming review of the V3000. It is easily HP/Compaq's best offering to date, and it's wide array of possible configurations makes it perfect for a broad range of applications. Such versatility also makes it difficult to judge with a simple, 6.9 CNET rating.

Just to make things clear: this laptop is availabe with both AMD and Intel Dual core processors, and all the advantages/pitfalls of both.

I wont get into specs. of my notebook here, because you can create your own. Just make sure you get a ton of ram--this stuff is dual channel, so you'll benefit even more so, and the video card takes 256mb if configured with the AMD processor. Trust me, that's a good thing when you're talking about integrated graphics (needs all the help it can get).

As far as form--it might be my favorite aspect of the v3000. The design is simply stunning, and it's even better lookning/feeling than the more expensive HP version, the DV2000 (unfortunate for the HP designers, but great for us consumers). 3 USB ports on the sides(and not in the back), firewire, bright and clear display, excellent touchpad, extremely unique mouse buttons (in a good way), touch sensitive volume buttons, multiple media card reader, mic on laptop lid, perfectly placed headphone jacks and partial OS boot for media. The remote control that fits into the PC card slot is also extremely neat and impressive. I could elaborate, but won't.

Just know that the features are all there in this HD video capable, sturdy laptop.
Performance is stunning for such a low total price. It can be made even cheaper with the student discount.

Highly recommended over the competitors Dell, ugly as sin (although a similarly tremendous value, I admit). Sony, completely overpriced, and the design not any better than this for its medium sized laptops.

    Enjoy

"Inexpensive, but also cheap" on by slinadoed

Pros: Lots of features for the price

    Cons: Poor construction

Summary: The first thing I noticed about the V3000 was an ugly burnt pixel in the screen, it was only one pixel and would have been a huge hassle to fix; so I just try to ignore it. The next problem came when I shut the computer down for the first time (and everytime since then). Upon shutting down, the computer displays a fatal memory error message and asks me to debug the computer. I click yes to debug the computer and the same error still appears everytime I shut down the computer. Then came the next problem after owning the computer for about 2 months the left button on the touch pad broke, just from regular use. I took the button off to find out that two tiny pieces of plastic (cheapest hinge I have ever seen) had broken off and the button was now useless. I contacted the store I purchased the V3000 from and they said it would be $100 and about a week because the entire touch pad has to be replaced becasue of the two tiny pieces that broke off. I then called HP and they said it could be fixed for free, but it would be about a 3 week turn around. I NEED my computer that is why I bought it, I would fail out of school by the time I got the computer back. Now I am stuck buying an external mouse to use for now and then shipping my computer to HP during Christmas break.

I haven't had any problems removing unwanted software as someone else mentioned, but I have still had more than my fair share of problems.

Bottom line if money is your #1 concern then this might be an OK computer for you, just make sure you check it over thouroughly before leaving the store. If reliability and customer service are your main concerns, then you should probably spend a little more money and get yourself a better computer. I am completely dissapointed in this computer and HP's customer service.

    Updated
After sending my notebook in to Compaq 3 times and receiving the notebook back with a new problem each time; Compaq finally agreed to give me a new computer and take back the lemon that I bought. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my new notebook from Compaq. First off, no burnt pixels this time, the buttons on the touch pad feel sturdy, and not a single error message after several weeks of use now (knock on wood). I was also pleasantly surprised that Compaq had given me several free upgrades; from an Intel T5300 processor to an Intel T5600 processor, from 512 MB of Ram to 1 GB of RAM, from a 100 GB hard drive to a 120 GB hard drive, plus a wireless remote control my first notebook didn't come with. So in the end I am very happy, but it took several months and a lot of heartache to finally get everything resolved.

"Best Compaq ( compact ) laptop" on by ricncal

Pros: Very quiet laptop ... decent battery life ... does not heat up ... good for surfing on the net and still capable of multi-tasking as well .

Cons: Wish it had the built in cam like it's HP counter part ... other then that I dont have too much negative things to say about this laptop.

Summary: First of all with the setup that I got for this laptop ... Centrino Duo Core , 100 Gig hard drive , 1024MB Ram , LiteScribe , HP PhotoSmart Premier , the regular price was $1229 ... but with all the rebates and store sale, I got this laptop with tax included at about $975 ... so I'd say that this was a very good deal which is comparable to other laptops in its category ...

Besides it beautiful good looks , for the price it does produce what you want in a laptop and more. It is very quiet and is more then capable of doing many tasks and beyond that ...

I highly recommend this laptop in the midrange categories of this level and for the price you can't go wrong .

"A Stylish Customizable Laptop" on by MarioBegins

Pros: Sleek design, widescreen, good number of ports, plus card-reader

Cons: Comes with the usual HP program clutter, not much hard-drive space

Summary: I purchased the V3000T from the HP store, I got the base model, with the exception of upgrading to a 1.73 Duo core centrino processor, and a free upgrade to a 60 Gig. Hard drive. The hard drive came with a recovery partition and several free programs and games. This reduces the available hard drive space to about 37 giabytes. I don't use any of these pre-installed programs, with the exception of Quicken for finances so I had to go on a deleting spree. If you wish to remove the recovery partition for more space, go to the control panel, then click administrative tools, then click computer management, then click disk magagement(local), then select the partition to remove it. I haven't removed the partition since I don't have a need for a large hard-drive. Make recovery disks before removing a partition.

    "Ghastly, horrible." on by ihatecompaq

    Pros: 1. Cheap.
    2. Ram is good (my laptop came with a 4gb upgrade)
    3. Good Webcam
    4. Good Microphone
    5. Altec Lansing speakers are fairly good quality
    6. Widescreen.

    Cons: 1. Overheats
    2. Useless battery
    3. Horrible motherboard.
    4. Graphics dont cut.
    5. Horrible screen quality
    6. CD optical drive cant open anymore.
    7. 2 of the 3 USB slots are malfunctioned.
    8. Soundcard is VERY basic.
    9. Graphics are integrated,

Summary: The laptop basically dies after 2 years of use (even with frequent disk cleans/defraging/good antivirus etc) as there seems to be a problem internally. Many people have had a bad experience with this laptop, and now have the same problem as I do, which is the fact that it won't turn on. The cause of this is a malfunctioning motherboard which HP dispatched a fix for and extended the warranty by a year. However, the problem only becomes identifiable after a year/two years of use and therefore voids the warranty. To fix the laptop without the warranty would cost you $300. It may be worth it if all your important things are on the laptop, but the bottom line is that it overheats, graphics are bad and the battery life is just not up to the standards expected. Bottom line, don't buy this piece of garbage.
