    "Inexpensive, but also cheap"

by slinadoed on November 5, 2006

Pros: Lots of features for the price

    Cons: Poor construction

Summary: The first thing I noticed about the V3000 was an ugly burnt pixel in the screen, it was only one pixel and would have been a huge hassle to fix; so I just try to ignore it. The next problem came when I shut the computer down for the first time (and everytime since then). Upon shutting down, the computer displays a fatal memory error message and asks me to debug the computer. I click yes to debug the computer and the same error still appears everytime I shut down the computer. Then came the next problem after owning the computer for about 2 months the left button on the touch pad broke, just from regular use. I took the button off to find out that two tiny pieces of plastic (cheapest hinge I have ever seen) had broken off and the button was now useless. I contacted the store I purchased the V3000 from and they said it would be $100 and about a week because the entire touch pad has to be replaced becasue of the two tiny pieces that broke off. I then called HP and they said it could be fixed for free, but it would be about a 3 week turn around. I NEED my computer that is why I bought it, I would fail out of school by the time I got the computer back. Now I am stuck buying an external mouse to use for now and then shipping my computer to HP during Christmas break.

I haven't had any problems removing unwanted software as someone else mentioned, but I have still had more than my fair share of problems.

Bottom line if money is your #1 concern then this might be an OK computer for you, just make sure you check it over thouroughly before leaving the store. If reliability and customer service are your main concerns, then you should probably spend a little more money and get yourself a better computer. I am completely dissapointed in this computer and HP's customer service.

After sending my notebook in to Compaq 3 times and receiving the notebook back with a new problem each time; Compaq finally agreed to give me a new computer and take back the lemon that I bought. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my new notebook from Compaq. First off, no burnt pixels this time, the buttons on the touch pad feel sturdy, and not a single error message after several weeks of use now (knock on wood). I was also pleasantly surprised that Compaq had given me several free upgrades; from an Intel T5300 processor to an Intel T5600 processor, from 512 MB of Ram to 1 GB of RAM, from a 100 GB hard drive to a 120 GB hard drive, plus a wireless remote control my first notebook didn't come with. So in the end I am very happy, but it took several months and a lot of heartache to finally get everything resolved.

If you see the error only at shutdown, one thing you can do is not to shutdown, and hibernate it instead.
Go Control panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate tab -> Enable Hibernation
Advanced tab in the same window let you easily hibernate your laptop when you press the power button of your laptop.

By the way, this seems to be software problem, not a hardware problem. so revert back to the point where the system was correctly working may fix your problem. Reinstallng the OS will be another option.

Btw, my v3000 has a chatty left button on its mouse pad.... that's how i get here.

    Good luck!

I bought a V3011au last year august. After all while now only the laptop is giving so much problems. First, the memory card and the motherboard were giving problems then the 2nd time the dvd writer spoilt and now the third time, the HD light keep on blinking and when it stops blinking, the computer process hangs halfway. I was quite frustrated with it as I really to bring it back to the service at damansara. I really need to use it urgently as there are lotsa assignments and works to be done. Can someone let me know what exactly happened to my laptop??Thanks

I am still wondering why 8 out of 10 times while shutting dowm Windows, I always get the error message that says "the instruction at ox5ad71531 referenced at 0x00000014. The memory could not be "read". Click on ok to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug the program. Aclick on either has not helped. Neither has numerous calls to HP Tech guys been helpful either. Anybody with solution(s) to this nagging error mesage?
