Teardown is well documented in HP's manuals on line, and clearly documents how to upgrade anything.Cons: TOO EXPENSIVE. The $399 model is 512MB RAM/8GB SSD/Linux. XP is $499 model, and $25.00 to bump the RAM to 1GB.
Stupid proprietary VGA out connector, requiring a $79.00 dongle to use it.
4200 rpm 1.8" drive means XP boot time of over a minute.Summary: Almost perfect. Expand the screen so it fits with an even narrower bezel and you could maybe fit an 11" display in here. Then bump the screen resolution back up to 1024x768. Get rid of the proprietary connectors and such. Move to the mini display port if you need to and offer VGA/DVI and HDMI out dongles if there isn't room for a standard VGA port. Move the trackpad on/off button, and make the trackpad a little taller. Make 1GB RAM standard. Make the hard disk 5,400rpm. And drop the price at least $50. Then you've got something.

Pros: HP have used every last inch of the wide body to fit in an incredibly useable keyboard and a beautiful, eye popping screen. Not only does it look professional but it is solidly built. And its still so portable!
Cons: Slightly less generous Hard Disc capacity but still plenty big enough for most. Also the power brick could be a little more attractive to match the beauty of the main unit
Summary: After looking at about ten of these netbooks all in a line in an electrical store the one that stood out from the rest was the Mini 1000. Its small, stylish and so useable.
I must admit that, coming from the Mac world, design is important to me. And this one is on the same level as Apple's designs. I thought I would never consider another Windows machine, but since Mac haven't yet got anything smaller than a 13" Macbook which weighs about twice as much as the HP Mini ... and costs 3 times the price..... I decided to take the plunge! For most things like surfing, email and so on there will not be much difference. And it comes with XP which is quite stable after all these years... I did try the iPhone for surfing in the coffee shops but its really not big enough screen wise for more than a few minutes of browsing or to look up the weather forecast. And I know I wont bother to carry a 5lb lump around... Its also good to have something like this to take on trips ...
Since I will be watching movies on it decent sound was important and this one is a stunner with high quality stereo speakers.
The actual specs are nearly all the same for the current bunch of netbooks. I researched all of them.... read all the reviews and tried them all out in the store. But this is the one I liked the best. All seem to have the same Intel processor and the same graphics chips etc. Some have a bit more memory and some have extra expansion slots. Some have less.
But this one gives me everything I could ever want in a most attractive package... and covers up the bits I never use (like the wired ethernet socket.....).
The only downside that I can see is the slightly smaller hard disc ... but then again I will never have so much data on this thing. And the power brick could have been more stylish to match the computer (Apple win on this type of thing). -

I almost bought the dell mini inspiron 9, which also looks good, but I felt that it was important to see and try it in person. I bought this one at Circuit City today. I was looking for a mini laptop for travel that I could use mainly for reading emails but also for light document editing. Try keyboards first if you can. Lenovo also has a great keyboard. The one on this hp is good too. I don't think I would use this as a laptop replacement but it is a great road machine and a great machine to have around the house. It is about 2.5 pounds and very small. I loaded amazon unbox to watch videos, ms office (which loaded fine) and I also connected it to my hp media vault server. Everything works like a regular laptop. It's a little slower but very fast with web pages. It's a really fun machine. You can't customize these machines much, but I strongly recommend getting max memory (or buying it preconfig'd with 512, then throwing out that memory and installing a 2gb card). I almost got a 16gb solid state drive, but I opted for this one which has a 60gb hard disk. Reality is, once you have a pc, you want faster and you want to install more programs. Even a netbook requires productivity programs (to view powerpoints or excel files or word docs), so you really need to have a decent size hard drive, even if you think you are only going to use this as a internet client. Just not realistic at this point. I got everything that I wanted installed in a short time, and I really like the portability of the machine and the size of the keyboard.

Pros: Best netbook keyboard IMO; Atom CPU finally, 10.2 inch screen option, good design, and lightweight.
Cons: Only 1GB RAM as opposed to the old mini-note's 2GB preconfigured; 60GB HD instead of the 160 in the old mini-note. Touchpad buttons still mounted at side of touchpad.
Summary: Despite minor issues, the HP Mini-note 1000 is my favorite netbook, with its massive keyboard with non-tapered keys (a pet peeve of mine) and atom CPU.

Cons: Battery life, screen size
Summary: This computer is great and delivers exactly what it says on the box. We use it for surfing in the kitchen, travel and for the kids to play on. It plays YouTube videos without any issues, the screen is bright and colours look great, it was easy to get on the wifi network and it looks really great. HP did an excellent job with the design of this product. The full glass screen (glass to the edge) really sets this netbook apart from the cheap looking alternatives. They keyboard is really one of the best I've seen on a laptop, and I think it almost rivals my desktop keyboard. It is miles ahead of the MacBook Pro I use for work.
