Don't let HP's use of the word entertainment mislead you. The company's slick-looking new thin-and-light laptop, the HP Pavilion dv1000 Entertainment Notebook, is terrific for watching DVD movies and listening to music (even without booting up the operating system), but its Intel 855GME graphics chip is too low end for serious gaming performance. Still, there's a lot to like about the HP Pavilion dv1000, including its attractive and lightweight 5.5-pound case, an abundance of handy buttons with soothing blue backlights, and an acceptable (if not stunning) overall performance. Priced at $1,400 (as of August 2004), the Pavilion dv1000 costs much less than multimedia rivals, such as the Toshiba Qosmio, but it lacks a number of higher-end features, such as the TV tuning found with the Qosmio. We recommend the HP Pavilion dv1000 as a solid and sensibly priced system for students, families, and small-business users who want to work and play on the road. The HP Pavilion dv1000 is both cool-looking and cleverly designed. Weighing in at 5.5 pounds, the laptop runs 13.2 inches wide, 9.3 inches deep, and 1.5 inches high. The Pavilion dv1000's 14.1-inch wide-aspect panel, with a 1,280x768 native resolution, is smaller than some screens found on other entertainment-focused laptops, but it's big enough for viewing DVDs and accomplishing productivity tasks. While HP has squeezed a fixed, secondary storage bay into the case for a DVD/CD-RW drive, we wish we could swap out the drive for other modules, such as an extra battery. The touch pad and the mouse buttons are on the small side, but they feature an on/off button that lets you disable the pad when it's not in use; as a result, accidental bumps won't send your cursor flying around the page.

HP has dabbled with blue status lights before--check out the HP Pavilion zt3000--and the dv1000's blue lights illuminate an entire row of handy buttons nestled above the comfortably large keyboard. In addition to the requisite power and volume controls, the Pavilion dv1000's DVD and CD quick-play buttons let you play DVDs, CDs, or MP3s stored to your hard drive without booting up. To the lower right of the keyboard are menu control keys and tiny Back/OK buttons for navigating through DVD menus; additional playback controls run along the top of the keyboard. When couch-bound, you can use the included full-featured remote control, which HP has ingeniously stashed inside the system's single Type II PC Card slot--a handy storage spot (when not filled with another card).

The Pavilion dv1000 heaps on a generous helping of ports and slots. The left edge offers ports for 56Kbps modem, Ethernet, VGA, docking, and one USB 2.0 connection. Another USB 2.0 port lies on the right edge, along with S-Video out and FireWire ports, plus a useful six-in-one card-reader slot that accepts Secure Digital, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, SmartMedia, and xD cards. The Pavilion dv1000's front edge is home to one microphone and two audio out jacks--nice for tandem DVD viewing on a plane--along with two speakers, which are slightly better than the ones on most laptops. The Pavilion dv1000 also has a convenient button to turn off the integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi radio and Bluetooth hardware to conserve battery power and make for easy plane travel. The HP Pavilion dv1000's components aren't cutting edge, but at $1,400, we wouldn't expect them to be. The system features a Pentium M processor running at a midrange 1.5GHz, 512MB of sluggish 266MHz SDRAM, a big 80GB hard drive spinning at a drowsy 4,200rpm, and a low-end Intel 855GME graphics chip that uses up to 64MB of the system's main memory. Despite these somewhat middling specs, the Pavilion dv1000 managed to produce respectable speed in CNET Labs' test benchmarks. Don't count on great gaming performance, though: our Labs' tests have proven time and again that games and this graphics chip just don't mix.

The Pavilion dv1000's other components are on the money. The 14.1-inch display, with its 1,280x768 native resolution, isn't huge, but its BrightView technology makes for an especially vivid picture. In a cost-cutting move, HP includes a DVD/CD-RW drive rather than a DVD-rewritable drive, but the included drive should be enough for most people. The Pavilion dv1000's 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware are standard laptop fare.

An optional hardware feature worth a nod is HP's new $199 xb2000 expansion base. You can plunk down the whole system into the base, adjust the base height, and raise the notebook's display to eye level to use it in place of an external monitor; in this way, it's a lot like Dell's notebook stand. The base also offers a ton of extra ports for plugging in external peripherals, such as a mouse and a keyboard.

In keeping with its consumer bent, the Pavilion dv1000 ships with Windows XP Home. HP's Quick Play application is the real star in the system's software lineup, however, allowing you watch DVDs or play music without booting up the operating system. Otherwise, the Pavilion dv1000 ships with a decent lot of software: a few Microsoft offerings, including Works, Money 2004, and Encarta Plus, as well as Sonic's RecordNow for burning CDs and InterVideo's WinDVD for watching DVDs when the system is booted up. Mobile application performance
The HP Pavilion dv1000 doesn't quite measure up to other comparable systems. Running an older Banias-based 1.5GHz Pentium M, it lagged significantly behind the Sony VAIO VGN-A190--two systems powered by Dothan-based Pentium M processors at 1.8GHz and 1.7GHz, respectively. Nevertheless, the Pavilion dv1000 is about average for a Pentium M 1.5GHz-based system and adequate for most office and content-creation use.

Performance analysis written by CNET Labs assistant lab manager Eric Franklin.

Find out more about how we test notebooks. Where a slower processor handicaps the Pavilion dv1000's mobile application performance, that slowness is a boon for the dv1000's battery life. Running a 10.8V, 4,400mAh (48WHr) battery, the Pavilion dv1000 lasted more than four hours in our office and content-creation tests. The Sony VAIO VGN-A190, with an 11.1V, 4,000mAh (44WHr) battery, and the Dell Inspiron 700m, with a 14.8V, 2,200mAh (33WHr) battery, couldn't manage even three hours. The Pavilion dv1000 possesses above-average battery life.

Battery life analysis written by CNET Labs assistant lab manager Eric Franklin.

To measure mobile application performance and battery life, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's MobileMark 2002. MobileMark measures both application performance and battery life concurrently using a number of popular applications (Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Excel 2002, Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, Microsoft Outlook 2002, Netscape Communicator 6.0, WinZip Computing WinZip 8.0, McAfee VirusScan 5.13, Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1, and Macromedia Flash 5.0).

System configurations:

Dell Inspiron 700m

Sony VAIO VGN-A190
Windows XP Home; 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M 735; 512MB DDR SDRAM 333MHz; ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 AGP 64MB; Hitachi Travelstar 80GN 80GB 4,200rpm Hallelujah! After years of sticking it to customers with toll-based tech support, HP has finally switched to a toll-free tech-support number. You can call that number 24/7 during your warranty period for free help from a live rep. The Pavilion dv1000's base warranty runs for one year--an average length from most manufacturers--and it includes free parts and labor via mail-in service. HP offers a number of extended-warranty options; three years of service and accidental-damage protection costs $300.

The documentation for the Pavilion dv1000 is particularly good. Several well-written manuals are included; they detail everything about the notebook, from its Quick Play software to its remote control. Another service highlight: for the life of the warranty, you can chat for free in real time with a tech-support rep on HP's support Web site.

Very stable unit

Pros: Thin & Light, very solid.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Review: I am not too gentle with laptops and this litte unit has stood the test of time compared to my other 4 laptops (HP TX1000,Fujitsu Lifebook B series, Acer EEE 1000HE and Aspire one). No regrets on this model.

DV100 - Rock Solid and adorable (1.5 years)

Pros: Eye turner - she draws a crowd everywhere even tho she's older
Battery life is unbelievable
She's so light, you think you have a netbook
Graphics are not bad, sound is darn respectable
DVD/CD without boot up is great - who needs an MP3 player?

Cons: Lost the harddrive year one, replaced in 5 days under warranty by retailer
Overheats - resolved with cooling platform (that pink screen is freaky)
Not a gamer, so don't miss that aspect
Bites not to have an HDMI port

Review: I looked at a lot of laptops and it can be darn confusing. I needed a workhorse, but I wanted a playful machine. The primary use was for heavy duty not-for-profit volunteer work that involved animals. That latter part might seem irrelevant until you consider how many times it was bumped, knocked, bounced and even caught a hairball once. Nothing has killed her yet.

I do wish she had an HDMI port, especially with all the new Netflix/Blockbuster oneline viewing options. I am considering a second laptop just for the higher end entertainment/graphics options. But this laptop makes me feel as confident as having a desktop on hand.

My review...3 years later

Pros: EXCELLENT battery life, durable, great sound, ability to play DVD's without turning on, wireless,

Cons: Overheats occasionally. Can't think of anything else....

Review: This laptop was purchased 3 years ago (2005) around Christmas time. It works just the same as it did the day that I bought it. I have the limited edition which is a beatiful glossy mahogony color. I'm not sure if there is anything different besides that. I use it for:
School
Home/Office work
Watch movies
listen to music
Surf the net
For those purposes it has been beyond excellent. This laptop is PERFECT for college students or small business owners. I honestly have no complaints. I've never had to replace anything or get it repaired-and I've dropped it more than once. The original battery is still up and running (though I may need to replace it soon as I think the lifespan has decreased a bit). I've never timed it but the thing last for hours! (5? 6?) It's very silient and is very easy on the eyes. Overall, I would definetely recommend this laptop. I've used other friends laptops and I can honestly say that I much prefer mine. I still get compliments about it.

DV1000 overheats and Dies

Pros: Good looking

Cons: becomes worthless in 3 years

Review: Check out many reviews; this along with many HP laptops have Nvidia chips that overheat and fries the motherboard. HP knows and is realling some models but their repairs only last at most 3 years; so a thousand dollars was a lot for a laptop that won't work after three years and they will not warrant it for longer, because they know it will be worthless after their warranty.

It is hard to beleive HP is selling laptops with a known problem, but they do.

An average laptop that leaves a lot to be desired

Pros: inexpensive, good for movies/music

Cons: poor quality,a bit heavy, overheats quickly

Review: We bought this machine to be used for very basic things (word processing, web searching, music) and paid a fairly low price for it. However, within a year the motherboard failed and had to be replaced (it was still under warranty). Recently this same laptop failed once more due to some unknown hardware issue. I have also had issues with the charger and had to replace it after a short period of time. Overall I would recommend this for someone on a budget who wants to do basic computing. The quality is not great but some might find it fits their needs.

dv1000 is a lemon - don't buy it

Pros: light, nice screen

Cons: how about this: it stopped working after 2.5 years and no one cares to help me

Review: Hi, everyone. Please go to http://getsatisfaction.com/hp/topics/hp_pavilion_dv1000_should_be_recalled_wont_somebody_help_us and write your comments there. It's a customer satisfaction/complaint site and HP actually frequents it. If we get enough people complaining, someone might actually do something about it.

Thanks

Reliable and loving my HP notebook

Pros: reliable, not hot to the touch, lightweight, quiet running, low maintenance, sufficient speed, great wireless card, ideal power cord, nice screen size, etc

Cons: keys are delicate, no eject for the media card reader

Review: I've owned this HP Pavilion DV 1217(1000 model) bought at Best Buy since 5-19-05 for $1249.99, excluding tax and the warranty I added additionally to be on the safe side. Mine has a 14" widescreen, 80gb hard drive, 64mb video, 512mb ram, 1.5GHz, Centrino Pentium M 715, 5.3 lbs,in case some dv1000 models are slightly different. I've used it every day for hours on end. It never heats up to where it burns my hands or palms. It never has just kicked off the power and shut off cause of 'overheating' unlike my Dell notebook that did all the time and it got so 'hot'. This one never does, thank goodness. I love how the power cord is made unlike my Dell's notebook, which ripped apart 3 times. This power cord, never had one problem with ever. I love how far you can reach outside using the wireless card, although sometimes it is moody on disconnecting, but not enough to irritate me. It's an easy fix, just power it off and on with a click, then it works again. I do like the blue to show the certain keys work and for illumination. I love how quiet the keys are when you type, which I type a lot. The touchpad has tripped a few times and went where ever it wants on the screen but usually if I Let it sit "off" a bit, then reclick it on, it works great. I use my touchpad each day. I like how quickly things move with my dsl or cable connection. The picture is always of quality and crisp focus and clarity. I like that the speakers are on the front rather on the "top", which I dislike on my Dell laptop. I do wish it had one more usb port but it works good enough for me, being I use a webcam and a memory stick. I love the Windows XP Home OS. It's so easy to use and usually an easy fix compared to my older Compaq desktop that had Millenium OS and a AMD Athlon chip, which froze a lot, blue screens, crashed a ton, requiring a ton of reinstalls of the os, enough to drive you insane. This notebook I have only had 3 times the whole time to do a reinstall of the os. I forget the "Errors". 2 of the 3 times I couldn't get to my screen saver area, the other time I lost all the things that were on my home screen, which I find weird, so my easy solution, not being a pc geek person, I reinstalled the os, knowing it'd be the least time consuming and frustrating and fastest to get back on my pc, to where it was running, without taking into a pc shop, which I couldn't afford no $50-$60 an hour. I'm poor.I do regret letting another guy use my notebook cause he broke off 3 of my main "keys". I tried putting them back on but the plastic broke that springs it up, where my Dell one you could snap it on no problems(that's about the only thing I liked on the Dell notebook). It's crazy cause I had heard a ton on Dell being so good but mine sucked, too much negative to me. So, due to that being the only real 3 problems with my notebook, I shall not complain. It's been the best of 4 pc's that I've ever owned, 2 being Compaq desktops(the one unmentioned a Celeron,98Se upgraded to XP Pro OS), and one Dell(Celeron, XP Home Os) notebook. I'm glad the guy working at Best buy had bought this exact model to suggest it to me, being a student in college. I trusted his opinion and the certain features I was looking for, 1-being no overheating,no hot touch, 2-reliable, 3-lightweight, 4-a power cord that wouldn't rip all the time, which got to be aggravating to me on my previous Dell laptop. I do wish the smart media card had an "eject" cause I put my digital camera card in it and almost break my nail pulling it out, always afraid I'll break my card, which thankfully it's not so far. It's just so tiny. I do wish I hadn't trusted the advice of others on my laptop battery because I left my battery clipped on while the laptop was plugged in and it killed my battery time down to lucky if 25 minutes now, but it's my own fault cause I didn't drain the battery, then leave it off when the pc was "plugged in", to not kill the battery, just wish I had done it right the 1st time, the battery isn't cheap for a low income person like me. I've never had a problem with the cd burner either. This notebook has really spoiled me. I'd never go back to a desktop, if given a choice and provided have the financial resources to do it over again, if need be. I really do love my HP 1217 Notebook! Thanks HP;)

I won't buy HP again

Pros: good for entertainment (DVD etc)

Cons: shoddy hardware

Review: I've had my notebook for just over two years.

Within the first year the battery failed and the internal fan went, so now it overheats.

Within two years my laptop monitor began to regularly black out.

I agree with the review comments about slow speed.

Sure the DVD works ok but it whirrs loudly.

From what I can tell these laptops aren't sold any more -- which is great news for others who won't have to put up with poor HP worksmanship.

At the risk of being accused of naivety: as a regular consumer, I'd expect a laptop to last longer than 2.5 years. They are a big investment and you would think that the outlay would give you a longer use lifetime.

I see no point in spending money now to fix these problems.

And with Windows XP being phased out and given the problems I read regarding Vista, I'm going to do what I should have done a long time ago: get a Macbook Pro.

3 year old boat anchor

Pros: I love boating

Cons: Expensive boat anchor

Review: About two plus years and the motherboard goes bad? That's it...@ ~ $1500 when I bought it(they still sell them at Best Buy for $895), I sure thought it wouldn't just stop working it such a short time. What a lame HP computer. A new board is 300 plus install making it a $400 dollar fix...Lameo company HP, I'll be searching from someone else. The web is full of these stories about this computer.

Defective- will be a total loss

Pros: lightweight, ease of use, nice screen

Cons: over heats, bad customer service

Review: The customer service reps will make you want to tear your hair out.

I sent in my laptop for the 2nd time of the same issue in a year. I received the laptop back the day after HP received it for repair. I asked the 1st rep I spoke to what was done since the customer/repair receipt inside the box didn't have anything filled out; although I could tell they replaced my battery. All the rep kept saying was that the expected delivery date is December 19th after I told him several times I RECEIVED IT BACK ALREADY the day before!!! Again, he said I'd receive my notebook on the 19th. I hung up so I could try someone else.

The 2nd rep couldn't find records of anything except that I was out of warranty. When I called in for repair I was told there were 20-some days left under warranty so I went ahead and sent my laptop in. I figured they must have extended my warranty and vaguely recall being told this the last time it was repaired.

It took an hour and a half on the phone today to find out that the fan was replaced in addition to the battery. But they didn't fix the heat issue. It gets so hot on the bottom left that even the keyboard is hot- and it's been running for only 20 minutes. The fan is constantly running trying to cool things down. This rep also kept saying that it probably was never picked up. I had to explain to him several times that the label on the shipping box shows it came from the service center, my laptop was in plastic which I had not shipped it in, and there was a customer/repair receipt inside the box!

Here's the timeline:

Purchased 12/15/05- opened on xmas
Repaired for heat issue 12 '06 (within the 1-year warranty).
Sent in for repair for the same problem again 12 '07.

Of course, now they won't repair my laptop again (which I just got back) because now they've discovered that I've been out of warranty for over a year???? (which isn't true) and to purchase a warranty would cost $256 for 1-year. Not worth the cost only to have the same issue again. There is a defect in this product. After reading some of the other posts, I'm not the only one.

So basically, a 2-year old $1250 laptop will be a total loss. Thanks HP! Regarding the 2nd rep I spoke to today, he couldn't even find any records of the initial repair order.

Thankfully I will be getting an iMac this Christmas and am thrilled! I would never buy another HP product and suggest others don't as well.

Total Bang for your buck laptop.

Pros: affordable, durable, reliable, good size/weight, remote control!

Cons: low on RAM out the box

Review: bought this notebook for Summer school abroad in Europe back in 2005. good weight/size (for my backpack).. hasn't failed me yet. Only had to upgrade RAM. Should last me for a while. The remote control is cool too!

Please, believe all the poor reviews!

Pros: small compact

Cons: Slow start up, overheating, poor quality

Review: This computer is horrible, please read all the negative reviews of this PC before you purchase. After I bought this computer I had to send it to HP for repair a few months later, problem with the mother board. The computer worked fine after that for a few months. I found the computer battery and bottom is very hot to the touch after a reasonable amount of use. Shortly after I was surfing the web and the computer made a "pop" sound and went out. After that everytime I tried starting it up the keyboard lights would come on but the screen would not show boot up. You would be best to avoid this computer and also the HP brand, customer service is non-existent!
IF you are looking for quality I would suggest Apple's laptop the Macbook (medium version) for the best value of hardware.

DO NOT BUY HP

Pros: Nothing is good

Cons: Piece of crap

Review: I did my research through CNET before I purchase HP Pavilion dv 1000. My conclusion after the purchase: "It is a piece of crap" (Excuse my language but that is the fact). One month after the purchase, the notebook was not functioning. I spent 8 hours with CRS to have it fix and the person just hung up on me before it was fixed. I called and requested to talk to manager and asked for refund and this time the manager hung up on me. Since I bought it in September 2006 until now, the notebook still have so many problems. I called HP every week and no service was offered to fix it. I still have my guarantee and I still not been treated right and have not received the service. Suggestion: DO NOT BUY HP PRODUCT. Do not feel sorry like me, spending my saving to a piece that didn't work.

Mediocre at best

Pros: Very nice â??Blingâ??

Cons: Disappointing Quality

Review: Pros â??Very nice â??Blingâ??

I will start this by saying the laptop has some excellent â??Blingâ?? by that I mean it has some unique and inspired specifications that create a very â??need to haveâ?? feel about this machine. The all-in-one card reader was an excellent tool to have along with all the other outstanding media related additions that come with this product such as the ability to play CDâ??s / DVDâ??s without booting windows, the mini remote control, the acceptable speakers that make this laptop loud enough for 2 people to comfortably watch a DVD on it, hot buttons and external ports that allow this system to be used as a makeshift (and expensive) DVD player. I would also like to acknowledge the good battery life and nice bright LCD screen

Cons â??Disappointing qualityâ??

On this note I would like to start with the Cons of this product, although each person will have a different opinion concerning their laptop providers be it HP, Dell, Toshiba or one of the other large name brands, I felt that there was too much added â??garbageâ?? that I either would never have use for or advertisements for things I wouldnâ??t want and this is why I prefer to do a fresh format and reinstall with my own preferences on what extras I receive. The integrated graphics on this product are somewhat lacking as well, for a laptop that is pushing the title of a media laptop a name brand card with its own dedicated ram should have been selected, the integrated that comes standard isnâ??t bad for just watching a few DVDâ??s and spreadsheet work but it cant handle the load for graphics editing, light gaming or extended use. Although I have not opened this laptop for fear of my warranty, I can easily tell the cooling solution for this laptop is very sub par. When I contacted the store that I bought this laptop in they simply replied â??ohh no everythingâ??s fine, it just runs a little warmâ?? this was an accurate statement but itâ??s not ok to run at the heat this thing does. Suspended in air I am getting 2 readings one at 48c Hard Drive temp and one of 67c Processorâ?¦ work load is hugging 80c processor and then an emergency shut down (suspended in air on two thin pieces of wood in average room temperature of 17c). These are readings after I had owned this for 3 months, over the months it started to get worse until it got up to this state ( I want to mention I kept this laptop is a dust sensitive environment and in a storage bag when not in use). Part of this heat problem came from poor air circulation, although this product had several exhaust and intake ports they didnâ??t seem to pull in enough air with its 1 fan.

Conclusion â??Mediocre at bestâ??

I want to close this review in saying this was a laptop â??I wanted to loveâ?? and I hated to use the title â??Mediocre at bestâ?? because other than the video card and heat issues it had some promising features that should be standard on all media laptops, but when the air circulation is so poor that it has to be suspended in air for regular work and cant be held on your lap is believe it is unworthy of the name â??laptopâ?? and should be acknowledged as a â??Labtopâ??. If I had known what I know now before I bought this I most likely would have bought a Toshiba.

I just wanted to add that the quotation marks don?t seem to work and after reading the other peoples under 4/10 evaluations I see a lot of common occurrences and would like to point out that a lot of big name brands use Canada and US based technical support but when it comes to billing they will send you to a out of country call center just to confuse the average consumer it seems (speculation of course because I doubt I would ever get an honest answer that would seem right).

so far so good...

Pros: not a bulky notebook PC

Cons: "special edition"???

Review: I came to realize that they no longer make this particular model notebook PC. No wonder I only bought it for 899 with a 50 USD mail in rebate. I only had this notebook for a few days. To me, it seemed to be a bit over loaded with games I will never play and software that does not have any use for me whatsoever. This is the first notebook PC I've ever owned and so far I'm enjoy using it.

I now have the freedom to be sitting on the couch watching TV and checking my email. I'm still tethered to a RJ45 cable for now. My next task is to find a decent wireless router.

Suprisinly good all around

Pros: tech support, features, screen, battery life, weight, design

Cons: matereals, Intel graphics

Review: I got this laptop off of Craigslist from a video editor. It was an excelent deal.

In the past I had an HP Desktop and it had motherboard problems, Hard drive problems, and heat problems but I decided to give HP a second chance after hearing that their laptops were a diffrent story.

The laptop is 1.7Ghz, 2Gb ram, 160gig HD, DVD+-RW and so on for $800 (from craigslist). I am a Apple person now but I got this HP for browser testing and running Win/Linux apps. I was impressed with the industrial design. Everything is layed out nicely and looks good. The features such as the remote and doubble headphone jacks are nice. It turned into my standard movie watching computer as well.

Unfortunately as I was watching a movie my cat knocked a large glass of water on to the keyboard and fried the motherboard. Tech support was helpful but being the poor college student that I am, they weren't able to make my motherboard magicaly work again. They did hold my hand throught the delema. Eventually I rebuilt the laptop from the processor up and managed to pinpoint the problem. It was a bad HD controller and the old 160gig was shorting the whole Motherboard. I had a spair 40gig lying around but the HD controller was still damaged. I later managed to jump it with a Linux live CD and eventually got the thing fully operational again, minous 120gigs. But the harware is fairly resilliant and I am extreamy impressed with the support and the hardware. A very well thought out laptop and I am considering looking into HP again in the future.

Great Value

Pros: Light, compact, durable

Cons: None so far

Review: This is a great laptop. I have a gaming PC at home but needed a good laptop for school and work. This is it. The only suggestion I would make is to upgrade to the 6 cell battery. Makes the shape a little odd, but well worth it for the extended battery life.

Great product from HP

Pros: Great battery life, quick and snappy processor, light

Cons: Poor graphics, briteview screen, casing easy to be scratched

Review: This is my second notebook purchase from Hewlett-Packard, which has undergone much change and restructuring over the past year. I was pretty satisfied with my previous product, the HP Pavilion zv5360us, but I felt that it was too heavy and cumbersome to be lugged around at 7.8 lbs. So I decided to trade it in and upgrade to the HP Pavilion dv1000. Overall, I am happy about my purchase of the HP Pavilion dv1622nr (w/ 1.6 GHz Pentium M 725A processor, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, 24x CD-RW/DVD Combo) because of the low price of $499 (after 100 instant savings and 250 mail-in rebate). It features the Intel Centrino mobile technology. It has a great battery life of about 4 hours (3:45 to be exact) and a really fast processor. Using the SuperPi benchmark, this computer calculated 2million digits of pi in 1 minute 57 seconds. At such a low price, it also includes a 60GB Hard drive, although HP did try to cut corners (and costs) by using a 4200RPM Hard drive, i would prefer a 5400RPM Hard Drive... i guess i'll have to upgrade it later...
This computer is very thin (at 1.1" at the front and 1.5" in the back) and is very light at 5.2 lbs.

However, it uses the Intel GMA 900 graphics core, which means slow graphics. It does complete everyday tasks relatively well, but this is not the ideal solution for gaming. On the 3DMark2001 SE, it scored a 3,500 pts. This computer also does not support hardware-based lighting, but does support Pixel Shader 1.4.
The Briteview screen can be quite annoying because of the reflection.
The casing, like most HP products, is easily scratched. Already, after a week after purchase, my case has attracted one scratch mark!!

From my previous experience, I did not find much problems with my first product. I did contact customer service once or twice and even used HP's live chat program. The technicians in all cases were quite curtious and knowledgable and were willing to help me solve my problems.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with this product and I'll buy my next product from HP.

Great noteboook for your money

Pros: Good battery life

Cons: May over heat easily

Review: FOr the price that you pay this is one of the best notbooks in the market. The batterylife is long enoough to entertain you in the airport. It has many feature that you can't even payfor on higher end notebooks like, playing CDs and DVDs without booting up or two headphonejacks

Best laptop I've ever owned

Pros: Comfortable kb, hideaway remote, excellent media controls

Cons: Nothing - my machine is even Vista capable!

Review: Great laptop for general use - I use mine mainly for internet and writing, the kb is very comfortable. The size, weight, and battery life are great for a portable system - mine is also the primary machine becoming the alpha over my Dell E310.

Hidden remote.
DVD+/-RW/CD-RW
Light weight
Portable
Great small size, but excellent kb layout/feel

I love this laptop so much, I've named it!

Thin'n Light, Fast enought to replace a desktop, Light enough to be a laptop, beautifull

Pros: Doesnt have the old intel GFX, Lighscribe DVD-RW, Brightview display

Cons: Big battery, Paint on exterior scratches, fingerprints to easy

Review: I actually was looking at desktops to replace the Mac Mini I had, Having trouble adjusting to macs I knew PC was again the way for me to go. I wanted something like a 12" Ibook, being small, light and compact and powerful while looking great as well, but with a windows OS. I happened across the DV1000 series at the HP website and decided to investigate them further and compare them to what else was offered. I looked at the Toshiba thin'n lights the Compaq twin to the DV and the gateway and dell offers. While all of them seemed decent competition, none of them got an Editors choice rating from PC magazine and some (the sony specifically) was quite a bit pricey for what was offered. I finally read the review on the DV1000 and most complained of the video chip set being a major pitfall. When I found the DV1580 I noticed it had a completely upgraded main board in it with a much better and more advanced INTEL GME9000 Series GFX card built in. This laptop not only has a much improved main board using a better GXF card but it also has a Pentium M740 Processor running at 1.73Ghz with speed step so If you just typing it does run at full speed eating all of your battery life. This laptop specifically also has an absolutely stunning paint job wrapping its slick exterior. Its called Black Cherry and is a deep black glossy automotive painted color with an incredible amount of red flake giving it a deep deep maroon color. Inscribed on the top in simple yet elegant silver "Special Edition" and the HP emblem is Brushed aluminum. I am very impressed with the looks of the laptop, all lines lead to a purpose or have a beautifully flow to them. I love how light it is. The only catch to this laptop is that the battery is of the 2 available is the larger one, it protrudes from the bottom of the machine instead of being completely flush like some of the lower models. The big batter is good in enhancing battery life however it is kinda a pain to have on your lap since its justified to one side it can tater if not on one level surface(having it on your lap is hard). Other than the battery I have no complaint about it. You will if you own one of these rare laptops want to consider getting some sort of clear cover for it to protect the incredible cover and paint job on it. I love this laptop it does everything well, Music in i Tunes, all the net applications and the G wireless is great, the antenna gets good reception, the remote control is useful for if your listening to music, or movies and are to lazy to walk up to the laptop. The little to "ok" and "back" buttons by the arrow keys are super convenient for web browsing and the media keys are great as well. I don't think there is a feature of this laptop I don't like. Its a great laptop, unique color and great features and none of the pitfalls of the non SE DV1000's.

This is very good "value" laptop

Pros: Beautiful Screen, QuickPlay Option and Buttons, abundant ports and drives, excellent battery life. This is a very portable laptop for its feature set

Cons: Keyboard is a bit "messy" with too many colors and letters/numbers, speakers are average, graphics card is shared memory

Review: This is a very good laptop for a non gaming yet high user of internet, MS Office type applications and demands portability as well as a good feature set.

Mine had 512 MB RAM (upped to 1 GB) and a sufficient 80 GB of Hard Drive space.

Screen is spectacular despite the "black screen effect" at certain angles. Normal use at normal angles of viewing will not cause any issues. Multiple watchers of DVD movies might have to sit a little closer (which might not be a bad thing in certain cases :)
Two headphone jacks in front are a good plus and so is the remote control feature although it does eat up the only PCMCIA slot for its storage.
The silver top of the laptop can be scratched due to the paint job unless you are carefull handling it.

This laptop is too cute and nifty looking to be a serious business machine (the comparable Compaq versions would be a better option for business use since they are more "blah" than the DV1000 series)

I only ended up paying $699 + tax for a display model that was in excellent shape (knocked down from $1099 in $150, $100, $50 rebates and a store markdown.

For the price I paid, there is obviously NO laptop out there that is comparable.

I always believe in getting my toys cheap because I enjoy them more that way without worrying about over babying them.
It should be possible to get this laptop at a $799 - $899 range after an instant rebate at many stores and that is still a very good value for what you will be getting.
Updated
A) Portability - Yes, a Qosmio offers the most features of any laptop but it is more of a desktop on wheels.

B)Battery life - It is not much of a "lap"top if it is tethered to a charger on a desk all the time.

You MUST be able to pick up and go for a laptop to be truly useful in the real world of digital cameras, wifi hotspots

The DV1000 manages to do the above (you can even get a extended battery) for a very good price

Also, all the newer compaq batteries and AC adapters are interchnageable with the newer HP ones so that is a definite plus too.

Overall its good

Pros: keypad, remote control, looks, screen size, 2 headphone plugins

Cons: battery life, not incredibly fast

Review: Overall this is a fun and cute little laptop for my needs. The remote control is great!! I use it for Itunes, watching dvds and powerpoints. The 14 inch screen is perfect for me as well as the keyboard. I get about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours for battery life which goes by quickly when you are on the computer. Also, the glossy screen attracts a strong glare.....basically it is a mirror in some lights.

Best Laptop with Best Configuration

Pros: Healthy Specification, Good looks, Light weight

Cons: One may face problems while playing high-end games as graphics is a bit below average

Review: Amazing notebook!

Loved the configuration, its a rare combination of high configuration and low price.

It has a DVD-Writer which includes a new technology of "Light Scribe" through which one can easily print on CDs

In short, if you are lookin a healthy system for your home or office use, this is the best one to buy!!

Best portable entertainment around

Pros: Light, loaded with software and convenience features

Cons: Underpowered video

Review: The way I ordered this notebook makes me wish I could go back in time. All of the features are great. The remote still makes onlookers smile and crane their necks to see what you're doing. The screen is crisp, sharp. Sound is great for its small speakers. Quick Launch buttons are simple intuitive and responsible. Quick play is fun and easy to work with if you set it up according to instructions. It wasn't very convenient to the way I stored my media previously. All of that is great, I just wish I opted for a little more power and space. I got all Scrooge-like and figured all I needed was a 40 GB hard drive and just 512 MB of RAM. Yeah, I was stupid. That's what I get for trying to save a buck. I tell my users and everyone else who asks my opinion, and I quote: "Remember, you can never have too much hard drive space. Whatever you think you need, double it." So, not only am I cramped for room, but it's slow on the RPMs, too. You'll never guess what I'm doing. Oh yeah, looking for a 80+ GB 7200 RPM notebook hard drive.

If you really want to enjoy this notebook, you can't just be in love with the gadgety features. There is no substitute for raw performance.

The screen has a defect in all DV1000 laptops

Pros: nice laptop, stylish

Cons: the screen has a defect with blackish effects if you are not perfectly centered

Review: I had a HP DV1000 laptop for 2 weeks. It was a good laptop the only big defect was the screen just like everybody says, the hp screen has horrible black effects if you are not totally centered while looking at the screen. Now, if you watch a movie with another person you have to join the heads while watching. The dell m140 instead is great. I am very happy with the Dell M140 laptop (look I am not working for Dell).

And to show you I am sincere I can say that the Dell Tech Support is horrible.

Nice concept but poor graphics

Pros: Light weight

Cons: Terrible graphics and too fragile

HP support, if you get into trouble, is also very poor.

I HAVE ONE! LAPTOP is SUBPERB but REPAIRS and WARRANY (HP SERVICES) SUCK

Pros: Fast and Light Laptop for the price.

Cons: Not that light of a laptop, the services provided by HP, not even up to parr

Review: My laptop was having battery problems. I sent it back to get it fixed and when it was returned. It was very much scratched up. I kept asking for a repair on due to their fault, but they wouldn't repair. I was incredibly pissed and yea, b/c they kept saying it was not a part of the warranty. But why the warrranty have to insure it, you guys messed it up. I emailed an online consultant and they told me to call again and pretended care about my difficulties. When I called them again, the people did the same thing. LIARS!!! Final statement, POOR SERVICE. purchase for laptop, but not for repair or services.

Professional Phower House

Pros: Tons of RAM, & Tons of storage.

Cons: Processor could be a little faster.

Review: I am a professional photographer and need a professional computer for image editing. This machine comes with 1 gig of ram, great for handling Adobe's PhotoShop CS2. It also comes with 100 gigs of hard drive space, so I can keep shooting and storing HI res digital images. The combo drive lets me burn CD-Rs,DVD-Rs,DVD+R's, and DVD DL's so I can deliver the images to my client on time and fast. Let's not forget about the light scribe functions which let's me create professional labels. A must have for anyone in the audio/video/photo industry.

Piece of CRAP

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: I purchased a HP dv 1000 about 8 months ago, 2 months later the power supply completely died. I couldn't even tun the stupid thing on. Luckily I was able to get my docs off by hooking up the hard drive to another computer. I got a brand new one (luckily I was able to get a exchange) and 6 months later it crashed. I am a student only using the computer for word processing and the internet. It seems a bit odd that two computers completely died on me. VERY FRUSTRATING.

My first laptop! I made a good choice!

Pros: Lightweight, affordable, lots of features

Cons: None that I have found

Review: I've never bought a laptop before, so I wasn't quite sure what to look for. With a little input from my fiancé, I began looking on the internet. I'm somewhat of an impatient person, so I wanted something I could go pick up right away at the store. I happened upon this laptop at BestBuy.com, and I decided to get it. I absolutely love it! I'm a student, and the laptop has everything I need and more! Maybe a few too many distractions when I'm in class, but I can work with it.

I like mine

Pros: Light, fast, low price, screen size, keyboard, ports

Cons: battery time

Review: I am very happy with my dv1000. The wide screen allows for a full sized keyboard. I have a Celeron 1.5 GHZ, and it's fast enough for what I paid (about $700, tax inc.). It's actually faster that I would have thought. I think the 1 MB of cache (can't remember if L2 or L3) on chip helps a lot.

The only complaint is that I only get about 2hrs of battery time (6cell). Maybe if I had gone with the full Pentium instead of the Celeron, my complaint would be mute. I can live with it, however, cause I can be plugged in most of the time anyway.

Everything you expected

Pros: A nice screen, portable size, interesting functions, good sound, and much more

Cons: when typing, arm tend to cover speaker, flimsy case

Review: If you are really into buying a good laptop and did you research, this one will not let you down, but no surprises either. Overall, the computer has a nice weight, appearance (if you don't mind the blue lights), and handy functions such as quick play and remote controls. The speakers are great, but when you type, your arms might cover up the speakers and affect the sound, that's just me, i like multi-tasking. Something you wouldn't know from surfing the web, the keyboards and touchpad has a roughty texture, at first i thought i would hate it, but as I'm typing now, it feels great. The laptop has a nice wide bright screen and comfortable spaces for your hands. It doesn't get too hot either, plus, it's super quiet. So, if you are out there looking for a light weight yet functional, practical laptop, with a hidden desire and passion for movies, you should definitely get this laptop. Plus for under $1000, I don't think you can get any better. The other downside would be it's flimsy looking case, not sure how to describe it, I think the whole thing is made out of plastic, so, I feel like it will fall apart, but that's also cause I read the first review. I'm really enjoying the computer, I'll update this after awhile.

Very controversial product

Pros: Nice design, good features, extra long batery life

Cons: DVD drive makes weird noises, AC cord doesn't stay where it's supposed

Review: It has been over six month since I have bought this computer and almost ever since I regret not trusting what people wrote here. I will start with my advice: when you read user's reviews, start with the worst. I know it is hard to read bad things about something you consider getting, but trust me - it pays off!

OK, now my story...

I have bought this product this summer and was more than happy with it. I chose to customize computer myself, and ended up paying around $1,500 for computer + $300 for accessories.

First month everything was like a dream - computer worked fast, sound was smooth, battery lasted enough to watch two DVDs! (using quick play)

And then one day I shut down computer to enter quick play mode, and boom! No actual bang, but I get a HDD error. I consider myself an advanced computer user, so I have tried removing HDD, and so on - nothing helped. DEAD :(

So I call HP and they "diagnose" that it is HDD problem - DUH that's what error says. They gladly agree to replace my HDD with all my freaking pictures in it (I didn't have backups). The only problem was that I am from Europe and I was about to leave US in three days.

HP still sent an HDD to my US address, and one guy agreed to bring it to me after a month, when going to Europe. So I went home with a dead laptop and waited...

In a month I get my new HDD, install it, and... same freaking error :( Good job, HP specialists. So now I don't know what to do - I'm in Europe and warranty is US and Canada only. I took my laptop to local HP office and they made it clear that computer will not be fixed if replacement parts are needed. Lucky me it was only the matter of resetting BIOS. DUH again - I have lost a bunch of photos because of this!

Anyway, now I'm a happy user and I like my laptop. It works fine, life is good, until one day, after class I sent my computer to hibernate, go to my office and it does not turn any more. I contact HP and they tell me to do power drain procedure (they told me to do the same procedure last time – do they know anything else?) Eventually they tell me to send them the computer, which is not the best idea, considering that Iÿm in Europe and shipping computer to US (HP would not cover it because warranty is US only) would cost me around $700 one way.

Again, I take my computer to local HP office and this time the verdict is dead motherboard. And the options? Well, they offered me to get a non-brand computer and install some of the parts from my HP laptop. Cost: ~$600 – no freakingÿ way!

Lucky me, I study in American college, where most of the faculty is American, so one nice guy takes my computer back to HP around Christmas. Now it has been fixed, but I have to way for my cousin (who lives in US) to bring it back. Probably the biggest mistake that I have made was not including battery, because my cousin canÿt check if the computer is actually working.

Well, at least I have a month to think of what to do next: I struggle between selling option and keeping option. I must admin that I love my computer, but if it would break for the third time, Iÿd kill myself.

This is it kids :) Iÿll keep you informed once the computer is back. And remember my advice: read bad comments first! Also I should note that my story does not apply to US residents that much since you can send the computer back and forth as much as you want within the warranty period.

great college notebook

Pros: lightweight, dependable battery life, nice featues

Cons: none so far, though remote is hard to figue out sometimes

Review: I originally had a zv6000 series from sams club for school- i went back to get my teaching degree. it was way too bulky for using at school, even if just the library. eight pounds is alot to lug around.

fortunately i got it at sams club, where you can get some great deals on a fairly well equipped computer. they had the dv1315 for the same price. i figured trading the screen size (widescreen 14 from WS 15.4) would be worth it for the easier portability.

i havent really noticed the missing screen size.. the wide screen is nice, and has the upgraded CLEARVIEW screen. though i never minded the "regular" laptop screens.

this one has an 80 gb Harddrive, a dvd burner, and 1 gb RAM. also the remote control which fits in the card slot.

MCE would have been nice, but I dont really have a practical use for it. all this was 998 dollars, so agreat deal for a computer not needing any upgrades for a good length of time if at all.

i dont believe they are offering the 1315 anymore, but do have the 1515, but i saw that listed for about 200 bucks more.

i believe they do have the dv5000 model, which actually has a larger screen in about the same price range, with an AMD Turion chip.

Overall, i find this to be a very good value and prob. the best computer ive owned.

Great if you don't have problems and need support

Pros: Nice screen, almost fast enough, good bang for the buck

Cons: QuickPlay problems with really poor Customer Support

Review: After weeks of research, broke down and bought the dv1000 with a little less memory than I wanted, but can upgrade later. The QuickPlay feature is great, but mine has a problem with picture and sound being out of sinc (try explaining that to someone who barely speaks English.."No! It doesnt skip (for the 100th time) it is out of sinc" I spent 12 hours in the 24 hour period since purchase trying to fix it. Without resolution to the problem. We will see if HP calls back like promised. So far two out of the 12 techs who said they would call didnt and one said he couldn't. Too bad HP doesnt have REAL techs instead of people trained to do a script. JD Powers for Customer Service? If so, Customer Service in this country (oh, yeah, not this country) is really lacking. I'd pay more for anything if I knew I could get REAL CS. Picture quality great, DVD plays fine in windows, actually if I can resolve this problem I think I will really like the puter. Light enough, good keyboard, lot's of ports etc. I got the titanium cover over the black one due to alot of finger prints on the plastic black cover. This one came with the dvd burner which I didnt need, but might come in handy. Wireless works easy in any room in the house. Battery life sucks, but that seems to be par for the course.

Good value, not too fancy.

Pros: Size, battery life, widescreen

Cons: Nothing that I have experienced yet.

Review: Got a pretty bare bones model for school. For the 900 I paid for it, it works well. The screen quality is ridicuously good I think, love the wide screen. Fits in a small backpack very well. Have to get the large battery to really squeeze time out of it, espically with the wifi on. The "brightview" screen reflects alot of light back, but that isn't too much of a bother. Media control buttons are nice, remote is great. Not a superfast computer by any means (no gaming), but works perfect for me at school and home. Runs all the programs fine at once with 1GB ram. Speakers aren't really that super, but what value laptop has great speakers? The two headphones jacks are a great accesory. Overall, I feel it is well worth the money. Haven't had to deal with HP cust service yet.

A great notebook

Pros: Good keyboard, battery, nad great screen

Cons: Havent found any yet

Review: This notebook is great from the start. I got the dv1315cl. The bright screen is excellent except that from the side it darkens a little but hey, I dont need others looking at what im doing. The only thing that has made me mad is that i bought it from sam's club and they didnt erase all there information from the system. Its all registered to them and I cant get it out. Then, when I tried reinstalling windows to erase it all, the disc was scratched. So now Im waiting for HP to send a new disc, free since its still under warranty. The only bad part about this, however is that its the holidays so im stuck without a notebook thats basically an oversized paperweight. The support of HP is fair. If you use the email system its great, but the phone service is terrible. All phone calls are outsourced to India and they cant type worth a flip or speak back to you understandibly. Their pretty much a joke. Oh yeah, the best part about this notebook is quickplay. You can play music or watch a dvd without powering up windows which saves battery life.

Excellent computer for students who watch DVDs

Pros: Light-weight, bright screen, full size keyboard, multiple USB ports, remote control

Cons: weird mouse placement, poor game graphics

Review: After using this computer for two semesters of Grad school, I can attest that it is light enough to carry back and forth to class while not sacrificing on extra features. Group speaking is a snap with this computer, as the remote control doubles as a Powerpoint clicker, allowing me to stand aside from the computer while giving presentations. But every student must take a break every now and then, which is where the brilliant widescreen display really pays off. Watching DVDs has never been more enjoyable - widescreen movies typically fill the entire screen, making it easily preferrable to any small television. If anything, the DVD drive included with the computer isn't as good as the screen itself. And BTW, why hasn't anyone wised up and put in a cable jack in these student-oriented computers so that you could plug it into a basic cable TV service?

Besides any pet peeves, there are really only two minor drawbacks to this computer. Namely, the graphics card really IS as bad as everyone says. As a casual gamer, this was a mild letdown at first, but as a student, it's a blessing in disquise - as it means I haven't wasted hours and hours playing Age of Empires III when I should have been studying. Also, you'll find the touch pad to be strangely located, it's slightly to the right of keyboard-center. While the full-size keyboard more than makes up for this strange oversight, typing can occasionally set off the curser in a different location (a minor annoyance). But because you can turn the touchpad on and off, it's not at all a problem if you attach an external mouse.

Overall, after a few minor upgrades in RAM and hard drive space, I find this to be an excellent out-of-the-box laptop, and look forward to many years of enjoyable service. Lastly, you can't go wrong with HP's student discounts and free FedEx shipping!

Awesome....

Pros: Has greater featurs like quick start buttons, dont have to turn on the laptop to play a dvd , mini remote, sleek design, and cheap.

Cons: Alright for gaming but it shares with the ram so thats what kills it. Still can most games (128mb shared).

Review: I am a media user. I usually use my laptop for entertainment purposes and this is a perfect laptop for that. The quick dvd options along with a nice screen makes the movie watching experience even better.

excellent specs for the price....but

Pros: you get a lot for your money

Cons: had issues with the color graphics

Review: great bang for the buck. however, i did not like the colors it was displaying at the beginning. it is very sensitive to the viewing angle and the colors was not sharp/rich enough to my liking. thought about returning it but finally got the vividness by tinkering with the brightness/contrast/gamma settings for the longest time. looking good now

Great Value all in one!

Pros: Compact size + full of features

Cons: Media card, USB, and 10/100 slots left open

Review: Have been looking at this laptop for about a year now. What appealed to me was the features without the large price tag. Had a Sony VAIO V505bx and paid $200.00 more for less features. The quick start DVD / music is a plus w/out bootinh up Windows. The screen is fantastic and easy to see. The DVD+R is a added bonus along with the 6-1 media card slot. I do have to say that all the ports are left open for dust and dirt to be trapped inside. Purchsed the 1331 @ www.BESTBUY.com + 3 year warranty which included a battery every year w/out sending back the old one was attractive.

Great Experiance with the dv1331se

Pros: Great size, screen, software, and features. Suprisingly solid performance.

Cons: Screen angle can be a bit tricky is changing light situations.

I purchased this laptop to replace an aging and semi-reliable Dell 600M. I have been very happy with everything about the machine. I was also super surprised to find the preinstalled and shipped software package to include many packages I have paid for in the past. I have been using this laptop for about 4 months now and I thing it is the best machine I have bought, ever. The Media Control keys are super simple and accessible. One point to make is that the Quickplay bootless DVD and music features are alien to me; I can't seem to figure out how this is supposed to work.

I bought the dv1331 a bit over a year ago and when the warentee was out the power supply took a crap and it won't even power up! Poor quality. Also I was looking at Vista, and the video card sucked so bad I can't even upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I paid over $1300, with the heck.

Better than I expected

Pros: Great screen, stylish, compact, and affordable

Cons: head phone jack is in the front, chasse could be made out of higher grade platic.

Review: I am a proud owner of a dv1310us. For a laptop under 1000 dollars I am impressed with the amount of featers this computer packs into such a small case. It's 14" widscreen enables the computer to be shallow enough to make it very portable. It will fit on a food tray on an airplane or train easily. When closed it is a good size to handle under your arm. The profile is very thin at classy. The screen is very clear and I do recomend the bright view gloss it goes well with the computers aesthetic. I love the design espceially the blue lights. After reading many reviews I was afraid that mine would have some quality controle issues but it looks like I got lucky. The laptop functions well and is very fast. I like that it was two headphone jacks but thier placement is a little odd. I would prefer them on the side instead of infront but, this is very minor. Also the outer case is easy to scratch but if you're carefull you should have no problem. Overall for a 1000 dollars I feel like I have made a great purchase.

Pros: battery life, screen, size , built in card reader

10 of 10 - The best laptop I have ever owned

Pros: Very good engineering - HP has hired some really good designers. The additional media buttons are very helpful. Lightweight, never gets overheated, sharp screen.

Cons: Screen needs cleaning on its exterior every so often.

Excellent machine (dv1331se from Best Buy)

Pros: Functionality

Cons: Screen angle, XP Home edition

Review: This is a really good machine - and that is coming from a current Mac user. I had to buy a PC for running software not available for Macs. I will still maintain that the new Mac operating systems beat the pants off Windows but, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease and stability of this system. The design is great - USB ports all around the laptop, 2 audio-out ports, and enough USB slots. I only wish that the multi-memory card reader also read Compach Flash - but I don't think many laptops do that (I may be wrong).

The Quickplay feature is just awesome - and more so while watching movies with the widescreen.

The only quibbles (?):
The sceen viewing angle is important - you often need to adjust the screen to view at 90 degrees for good image quality and brightness.
If you are one that makes power point presentations then remember that because of the widescreen, the aspect ratio is different from most LCD projectors - so, when you plug your projector in, your laptop screen is smaller, so your window extends below/above the physical limits of the screen (I am a windows novice so there might be a way around this that I don't know of).

Also when you are in slideshow mode in powerpoint, the screen gets flattened and stretched out.

Also, the remote that comes with the machine can be used to advance Powerpoint slides - isn't that just great!

I personally will take the above difficulties - just for the 'widescreen' - which is awesome for watching DVDs.

Final buying advise:
Buy a mac over a pc - it is just so much more simple and user friendly.
Buy the HP dv1000 series over any Sony Vaio (which I also use a fair bit). The Sony's are overrated - the only thing they have going for them are their great screens.

nice laptop when it works, 2 motherboard crashes in 6 months

Pros: cheap, light, fast

Cons: the 2 motherboard crashes!

Review: First crash after 1 month, but got it fixed in Singapore in 1 day. 2nd crash 5 months later, expecting hassles as I'm in Bahrain now.

Poor Reliability do not recommend

Pros: Works great when it's running

Cons: On-going reliability issues

Review: When operating, this computer is fine and does everything I have asked for a traveling business device. However, the computer is now on it's third trip back to California in 5 weeks for repair, wiht speakers, motherboard and now the screen being replaced.

NOT for someone who values reliability

Pros: Size, features, lightscribe, screen

Cons: Issues, customer service, warranty, reliability

Review: I bought a customized dv1000 with the works for my sister (who is going to college) about 3.5 months ago. About 3 weeks into school, the laptop just died. So i sent it in for a repair and was returned indicating that the motherboard was "serviced". Shortly after i got it back to her, the same thing happened again. I was horrified. I had to get her to send it back home and sent her my laptop. This time the motherboard was replaced. Not 2 days after i got it, the speakers started emitting some odd background sound. I called the Case Manager assigned to my case but they wouldn?t budge. Guess what.... its scheduled to be delivered back today and i was told by the case manager that the motherboard was replaced again. That?s almost 8-9 weeks of not having a working $1200 laptop.

HP has been extremely uncooperative. They are not willing to replace or refund even though this thing is definitely a lemon. The manager indicated that the laptop would have to break down two more times before they are obligated to provide me with a replacement. I would not recommend buying this laptop at all. Definitely not for someone who values reliability.

great value, great quality - had it for a year and no problems!

Pros: fits a lot of features that other sub-15in laptops don't

Cons: very little... minor grip about placement of the touchpad

Review: Love this machine. people complain about the "Brightview" screen, but i love it. Functionality-wise,laid out very well, except for the location of the touchpad. it hits part of the palm of my right hand. while that's not usually a problem, since i have it off (i use an external wireless mouse), it takes a bit of playing with the settings to solve the problem. i've had this for a year, and haven't a problem at all. great!

Great value, no problems for 7 months and counting

Pros: Bright and easy to read widescreen display, better battery life than I expected, good wireless, great looking, no problems so far

Cons: Nothing I can think of

Review: I've had some bad experiences with computers the past few years. I will never again buy a Gateway, who, for a long time I was a loyal follower, but their quality and support has gone down the toilet. I had a Gateway 400 that worked beautifully until two weeks after the warranty ran out; it would not turn on again after that. Same with Dell, I must have had a defective laptop from them, there were so many things wrong with it from the beginning. A Dell desktop I had worked fine though, so I think it was just bad luck there. I decided to try HP / Compaq. I narrowed it down to either the Compaq Presario V2000 or the HP dv1000, which are essentially the same computer, with the HP having a few more nifty entertainment features. In the end, I decided on the HP, primarily because I got free shipping on the HP and not the Compaq at that time.

-To start, the dv1000 is easily the best-looking laptop I've seen or used. The inside is black matte plastic with accents of polished black, and the outside is silver. The also great-looking V2000 is nearly the inverse of this scheme, and it's also great looking. The build quality is far, far better than the Gateway and Dell laptops I've owned. Everything just feels solid and well-made. I've thrown it in a bag plenty of times and there aren't any scratches on the case.

-The 14.1-inch widescreen (I didn't go for the Brightview option) is crisp, bright, and easy to read. I was skeptical at first about the widescreen, but I've grown to love it. Now it feels weird not to have it.

-The dv1000 has a really nice feature that the V2000 didn't have called QuickPlay. You can play CDs and DVDs without booting up Windows, which saves a lot of time.

-The best laptop speakers I've used before. Considering that the last one I had, a $2000 Dell, had speakers that never worked from day 1, I was pretty impressed. They're mounted on the front instead of inside, so the screen being closed doesn't change the sound. Also included are two headphone jacks, so you can enjoy it with a friend

-The keyboard feels solid, not cheap like some laptop keyboards, and the touchpad is good too. It has an on-off button, a very handy feature for typing. There's a mute button (useful), volume up/down buttons, controls for the QuickPlay feature, and stop, forward, play, and backward buttons.

-I got the integrated wireless option, which provides great reception for my wireless cable internet. My previous laptop with a wireless card cut out all the time. There's also a wireless on/off button, which saves battery power when you don't need the wireless

-I find my dv1000 faster than my Dell desktop with a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4. Mine has a Pentium M at 1.6 ghz and 512 mb of RAM, and a 60 gb hard drive.

-The computer looks like it should be heavier than it is. I've dragged it around the airport in a bag, it's nice and light for its size.

-There are plenty of ports for a relatively small machine. Three USB 2.0 ports placed all around, two headphone jacks, Ethernet and phone, external monitor, S-video, Firewire, a 6-in-1 media card reader, microphone jack, and a port for an optional docking station

-The fan hardly ever goes on, and I don't notice it at all unless it's dead quiet around. This is far improved from the Gateway 400 that had a fan like a jet engine (you wanna talk about abysmal quality, go find yourself a Gateway 400)

-Battery life is good. One warning, the 12-cell battery sticks out a lot from the bottom of the computer. Don't get this unless you really need the extra life. I have the standard 6-cell, and I've gotten nearly 4 hours out of it.

-Price and ordering process: I paid about $800 for my dv1000, custom built from HPshopping.com. It was delivered in about half the time they said to expect it in.

-Support: I had to deal with HP customer support briefly before I got it because of something with my credit card. I found it fine, although other people here had awful experiences with HP customer support

Overall: I would recommend the HP dv1000 or the Compaq V2000 to anybody. I love this computer. There is not one thing I've had to 'settle with' or 'get used to'. Since I got it in April 2005, I haven't had any problems with it. This is far and away the best computer I've ever owned, and I paid less for it than any of my previous ones.

Pros: Screen, Memory and battery life

Cons: Flimsy Case

I am happy I made my choice on that model after a long and cofusing search period !

Pros: powerful, fast enough for my application, smart look, fari battery life, good price for the package

Cons: comes with windows xp home edition, USB ports cause occasional hangings ( I beleive its an OS problem) when used, graphic card shares the core memory, build not solid enough for rough use

Review: My previous laptop was an LG LW70 Express edition fully loaded, and I am still in love with it, powerfull processor, 128 ATI X600 graphic card, 1 GB ram, 100GB hard disk etc.
my only problem was the mobility, with a 17" wide screen it was a little bit hard to climb floors, assit meetings ion various locations, take my laptop back home every day after work and most of all use it on the plan when flying in economy class (I beleive you all see what I mean, not enough room for you and your legs already)
So I decided to look for something as powerful as my previous LW70 Express but in smaller size, and I found this beauty from HP laying there and seducing me with its charming look! I have it for about a month now and I am very satisfied with its performance, am just disappointed with the low cutting on the graphic card, but it is doing fair enough on some games that are considered resources consuming! my only reel problem is the USB ports, they keep hanging everytime I plug a USB device (mouse, keyboard, webcam, etc), but according to microsoft support there is a problem with the embeded drivers for the USB ports, am still working on the issue but its not really a big bother.
my conclusion, if you are looking for a laptop that can fit allmost everywhere, powerfull enough for your applications, got all the connectivity technics known(bluetooth, Wirless G, LAN, Modem, USB, FireWire) etc, then this is the right laptop for you!

You have to be carefull when you are handeling it though, because it does not come anywhere near the latest IBM modeles on that lavel. But hey, paying extra 1000 USD to get the same config in a titanum case did not convince me, after all I am 30 years old and I know how to take care of my gadgets.

the specs I got

processor : 2GH Pentium M Centrino

RAM: 1 GB DDR2 (look for the 1375ea model)

Hard Disk : 80 GB

OS: Windows XP SP2 Home Edition

Connectivity : Wirless LAN, LAN, Bluetooth, USB, FireWire

Good for what it does.

Pros: Good battery life, good options, widescreen makes you think you're looking at a larger monitor, light weight.

Cons: Integrated Intel graphics chip won't play most newer games.

Review: I use this laptop for school and as such it's great. I get good battery life even with wifi up, upwards of 5-6 hours per charge (got the larger battery option). The widescreen does have a noticable impact-making you think it's a larger monitor. My only regret is that it doesn't handle most games well. It does exactly what I bought it for, but it would be nice if the intel gme 855 chip had pixel shader capabilities. If you want a laptop you can game on this is not for you- you need to make sure games don't require pixel shader as the integrated intel chip does not do them. The benefit is that it drastically lowers battery cost-but I also have a PC to game on. If this is going to be your main computer you may want to look into another laptop if you are planning on doing any gaming on it. Otherwise I love this laptop, it has done me well and I've generally had good luck with HP.

Perfect for a college student, even my friends love it!

Pros: entertainment: an optional remote control, wireless, optional CD/DVD burner and player, brightview screen, great sound, plays DVDs/CDs without booting up. Affordable, lightweight, customizable.

Cons: Nothing significant...the remote doesn't have the ability to fast forward or rewind through a song, but who cares! It has a remote!

Review: This is the ideal notebook for music and video lovers on-the-go. Specifically, it's the ideal choice for college students (much better than the Dells, that often have tons of problems and poor customer service).

In choosing a notebook I didn't know what to look for and the technical details, so I used the notebook recommendation quiz by ExactChoice (which is on the menu to the left). I specified that I wanted a light laptop, lots of space for mp3s and digital photos, amongst other things. The quiz revealed the dv1000 as a great option for me, I bought it, and I'm beyond delighted with my purchase.

I'm not the only one who's impressed by my laptop. Since it arrived in the mail 5 days ago, both of the campus computer technicians that helped me set it up commented on the nice features, look and size of it. Other girls on my dorm floor commented that I have "one of the nicer laptops". Even when I just tell my friends about it's cool features, without seeing it, they're impressed.

As a student, I love being able to download tons of mp3s (I used HP's customization option to include a big hard drive), watch my DVDs, surf the 'net and view online media. The dv1000 definitely caters to those interests and then some. HP created a remote control you can use with the notebook (how cool is that?!) so I can adjust the volume, pause, play, etc. just like a TV. This notebook also has a digital media card reader that recognizes 5 card types, it's perfect for my digital camera. Furthermore, I can't wait to upload lots of my pictures from my digicam to view them on the gorgeous display. With the free upgrade to a Brightview screen, everything I see looks much more vivid and clear. While we studied for a quiz, one of my classmates took notice and gazed at the screen in awe. He commented, "Whoa, your screen is so bright" and that his Dell notebook screen was dull in comparison. I've decided that I definitely don't need a DVD player and I plan on watching lots of movies on it with my friends. Additionally, this little computer is very quiet so it doesn't interfere with my movies or music playing.

I'm enjoying the wireless connectivity. I can do research for papers on the 'net, listen to online music, and instant message my friends in any of the lounges or hotspots on campus. The long battery life helps me enjoy the life without the wire longer.

Let's not forget about the look and size of this laptop. "Sleek" is the word that comes to mind when describing it, as well as "eye-catching". When I open up the notebook to reveal its blue backlit buttons, useful controls and bright screen, it's obvious that its truly exceptional computer. Furthermore, I'm very pleased with its small size and light weight because I can effortlessly carry it around campus or take it on trips to my parents' house.

Overall, I love this notebook and I'm so glad I found it. I highly recommend it to college students looking for a notebook to greatly enhance their college years, or any digital media lovers who want a superior entertainment experience.

Love It...

Pros: love the widescreen... remote control.. woot!!!!

Cons: exterior construction material feels cheesy or maybe its just me

Review: this is my first laptop... and i think i made the right decision... i looked at dell inspiron, toshiba etc... dell looks dull infront of this hp. i am not using this laptop for gaming as i have read in some other reviews (i have a desktop for gaming) so the graphics really dont matter to me as much. i use it for internet, email, powerpoint etc... the basic stuff.

Exellent value, excellent support, horrific quality

Pros: Ideal feature set, esepecially for the price

Cons: Quality, quality, and quality; incompetent warranty repair

Review: About me: as a professional screenwriter, moderately computer-literate, and extremely anal about taking the time to find the perfect product, I was looking for the optimim balance between functionality and portability, exceptional battery life, and a good mix of basic productivity and wireless communications functionality for the price. After going to Best Buy to physically look at the shapes & sizes I had to choose from (which I strongly recommend for any laptop buyer), I decided that the 14" widescreen display was perfect, and compared to the very few other brands offering that size, HP just blew them out of the water in features for the money.

First, the good:

The machine looks cool, comes with cool features like a remote control (which I actually use when I hook up my dv1000 to my home A/V system & use it as a jukebox).

It's a good weight, and since I tend to spread out horizontally & want lots of working area without taking up the entire table at Starbucks, the screen shape & size were ideal for my needs.

The performance is adequate, not stellar (forget playing the latest games with that Intel graphics card), the wireless reception is excellent compared with any laptop of any brand I've used, and the battery life for the extended-life battery (easily exceeding 4 hours without even dimming the screen) is superb.

Lastly, the customer service and tech support *representatives* (we'll get to the actual service in a sec) are extremely friendly and helpful.

Now, the ugly:

One minor gripe and one catastrophic deal-breaker. The minor gripe is with the fit-and-finish. The machine looks great in photos, but its plastic 'immitation metal' and several other cheap touches are a bit disappointing in person. Overall, to anyone within 5 feet of your machine, it'll look like you cheaped-out to save money. But for the price and all its other benefits, who cares?

Now for the deal-breaker: my first unit arrived with a burned-out pixel. Not so great for a computer they're marketing for portable video applications. After packing it up, shipping it back to HP (I had customized mine on HP.com), getting the run-around on the phone for over an hour about whether I'd get the same deal I got on the first machine, waiting another few days for the next machine, and finally getting it, guess what? Another burned-out pixel. Packing it back up again, shipping it back again, and getting bounced from one customer service rep to another again, this time in a much nastier mood, I finally ordered a third one (just bc there still wasn't any other machine I wanted, and I figured, hey, what are the odds?), waited, finally received a machine with 100% functioning pixels.

Unfortunately, the saga continues. Ten months after receiving my 3rd machine and really thorougly enjoying it the entire time, I developed a motherboard issue which forced me to repair my HD, then repair my Windows at least once a day. I sent it back (still 2 months left on the warranty) with a comprehensive, typed description of the problem, its triggers, the error messages I saw, etc... I also stressed that the problem seemed to involve heat and heavy hard drive or CPU use and would probably work when they first got it despite the obviously severe problem it has. I also included my cell # and told them they could call me as often as they wanted as long as they fixed the damn thing. 7 days later, with no computer to use the entire time, I get my dv1000 back with an invoice saying "problem couldn't be replicated." Nothing was fixed.

So now that the problem has returned and the machine I depend on for my livelihood is non-functioning, tech support suggests that I send it back, live without a computer for another 7 days, be content with their assurance that they'll "try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

My other option is to eat the cost of this machine which only worked for 10 months (versus my 6 year-old Dell laptop which has never had a single problem and still works), and save my time deailing with a warranty that's obviouisly intended to avoid making costly repairs.

Conclusion:

Overall, the design, features, and customer service for the machine are excellent. But since it's now totally non-functional after 10 months and HP is clearly unwilling to take its warranty commitments seriously, I really, really, really wish I had bought a Dell or a Sony. Having gonen to college in Palo Alto, I had always thought of HP a a blue-chip brand. Now, there's no way I'll ever buy another HP product in my life.

Good luck to everyone in their search, and I hope you end up making a much better decision than I did.

Great Machine, When working

Pros: Quick, decent storage space, thin and lightweight

Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE! Possiblilty of shorting out due to metal grill in front?

Review: I have had my dv1000 since Janurary, the problems started as soon as i got home with a software/hardware issue. The laptop would power on and as soon as everything loaded it would shut off. I called Tech support their fix was for me to go back to the store and exchange it. Following computer worked fine for a couple of months and then around may i had to send it in due to an usb hardware failure. They replaced all the usb related stuff and sent it back. Last week (sept. 20th) i had sent it in due to a motherboard failure in which the the laptop would not turn on. In my conversation with the tech he had informed me that he had heard that some of these computers had been shorting out due to the metal mesh grill in front (great selling point huh?!). also Tech want on to state that if anything happens again that replacement options would be discussed sharring my view that 3 pretty major service incidents is unacceptable. I got my laptop back monday of this week after it being it service to replace the motherboard and ac adapter. However today (not even 48 hours later)i try to turn it on and it wont power up. Spoke to a tech and after argueing with her for about 10 minutes about being able to speak to a manager about my problems she finally put me through (obviously customer happiness isnt very important?). He was no help either. He was very unclear on his thoughts. First he told me that it needs to be sent in at least twice before it could be escalated about replacement options then when i proved that it was sent in a second time (usb thing which was under my friends name since i was out of town at the time) he then changed his mind and say they need it three times. Save yourself the headache and buy from another manufactorer that will stand behind their work and still believe in putting the customer's satisfaction first.

Nice! Real nice toy

Pros: Lots of multimedia features

Cons: Not as fast as my old amd athlon computer

Review: I used to have an E-machine m5010 and I love it. The fact that it has AMD Athlon 64 bit processor that makes it a fast efficient computer is a good thing. Battery wise, oh well, its not the best. Multimedia wise, its ok. It has a 15 inches widescreen monitor but does not have ultrabright or any x-bright technology but its a good computer. I bought this computer 2 yrs ago so you know back then it has all the bells and whistles and more. Two weeks ago it died on me. Lcd screen began to fade and everytime i put my left palm on the palm rest, the lcd screen died. The sound card i think stopped working and most off all it always overheated. The fan would just come on all the time not automatic and boy its loud. So I decided to buy something else. I looked at a dell 700m but i was having second thoughts (online). So i went computer shopping. I saw the HP DV1311 Special Edition with lightscribe technology (self cd labeler), remote control (for your multimedia stuff), and everything that you want for a computer. The downfall of this computer though is that it has Intel Celeron Processor which is nothing compare to the one i have. Screen is so beautiful, and i love the casing. A combination of black with lots of led lights and silver with clear coating, really nice. 802.11/g is great, mmc/sd card reader which i really need since im in school and use my sd card from my pda cell phone a lot. If you want to watch dvd or listen to the music you can without even starting the computer. Thats a plus. Over all this computer is highly recommendable to everybody. The fact that it is not bulky like my other computer and it is just right sizewise for traveling.

One experience I never want to repeat

Pros: Good price and decent features

Cons: Horrible customer service, faulty machine.

Review: I endured a grueling, nearly month-long process in order to receive my HP Pavilion dv1000, only to end up disappointed and frustrated.

I embarked upon a search for the perfect notebook that I could use for the next four years of college that lie ahead of me. I looked for a computer that could satisfy the criteria I set up for myself:

1) Good, fast performance (Pentium M or bust)
2) Good entertainment features for MP3s, CDs, DVDs, etc.
3) Good customer service and warranty (just in case my roommate decides to do cartwheels in our room and accidentally kicks over the notebook)
4) Decent harddrive space (Minimum 40GB, Max 100)and RAM (512-1gig would be fine)

I decided to purchase the HP dv1000 on hpshopping.com because of the rebates and extra $100 student discount for a final total of $1456.00. This is when the problems began.

Apparently, the credit card information did not match up with the one in our bank database, and verifying this information took many phone calls, over 2 hours of hold time with hp, frustrating communication issues with outsourced operators in India, and a verbal sparring match with one particularly rude hp operator. Even my bank told me that HP's security protocol was unusally complicated and rife with bureaucratic redundancies. After 2 weeks of waiting, my order was finally verified and shipped out. I was told that I would be later reimbursed for the $70 2-day business shipping HP had to use to get the computer to me quickly.

Well finally, the computer arrived yesterday afternoon. Everything seemed to be fine, except for the DVD video quality. I tried watching "The Last Samurai" using their InterVideo DVD player, but the entire picture was unacceptably grainy. After speaking with an HP technician online, the problem was slightly fixed, but not noticeable better.

Later on, I tried to rip my CD collection into the computer's 100gig hardrive. The first 10 CDs were fine, but suddenly my computer refused to read or recognize any CDs. In addition to that, my computer was lagging so much that it froze on occassion. I tried calling HP twice, but was put on hold for 30 minutes each time and never got through to an operator. I talked to an HP technician online, or rather, 5 different technicians online after continually being disconnected from their server or system. One techie was rude and condescending (probably assuming that females are always clueless about electronics, which is entirely untrue), telling me he didn't know what else to do but have me send in my computer for an exchange or replace my entire CD drive. I didn't like his advice, and spoke to 4 other people 4 different times, to no avail. On my fifth online attempt to speak someone who knew how to help me, I ended up speaking with the same, rude techie! Finally, at 1:30am, I called HP and got through to another techie. He told me I had too many startup options, and helped solve the issue with my slow computer. But my CD drive still won't work! I gave him my BIOS info, hoping for an update that may help the issue. But the phone techie told me my computer issues had nothing to do with the CD drive or OS, but he'll call again tomorrow to check up on the status of the machine.

I have since called HP and asked for FedEx to come pick up my computer for a full refund. In addition, I have just placed an order on CircuitCity.com for a Toshiba Qosmio AV205. Originally, I wanted this computer but wasn't able to because of the price. Now there is a $300 online rebate available, and I am more than willing to pay a little extra for a computer that I know will deliver stellar performance and features. I have also read many reviews that praise the superior customer service that Toshiba offers.

I understand that my situation is particular to my circumstances and may be an isolated occurrence, but my problems with HP customer service is not rare! I have had many customer service issues with HP regarding my digital camera and all-in-one psc printer. I suppose I am to blame, because you know what they say: Fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. (But don't ask our president to repeat that aphorism... you'll only end up more confused conservative slap-happy)

EXCELLANT (just don't buy it from BEST BUY)

Pros: Fast, Bright, Long life battery, easy to use

Cons: HP customer part service thru Best Buy stinks !

Review: Almost a desk top replacement, fast and fun, nice bright screen, very good battery life.
Customer service above the norm, just make sure you avoid buying it from BEST BUY stores. I took mine in for a screen failure (after only 6 months, a bit disappointing), the repair took 2 weeks, and they lost my charger in the process. Nearly 3 months to get a new one. I complained 4 times, found out they don't take responsibility for their mistakes. One offer after 2 months was to have me to pay for one until mine came in (then I could send in the paperwork and get my money back ! Ouch !). Make the name of the place Bad buys. Save yourself some agita, buy it elsewhere.
Nice laptop!

Well worth it.

Pros: Lite, fast, great features. Love the ability to play dvds and music without booting, battery life.

Cons: Graphics Card, can get hot.

Review: This computer is worth the money. It's really lite, and works amazingly the moment you take it out of the box. Love ability to play dvds and music without booting. Get the remote a definete plus. It does get sometimes, but the battery life is great. Great for students on the go, and the wireless and bluetooth are amazing. Once you set it to your own comfort it's a great machine. Only bad this is a bad graphics card, its easy to get over that.

Great! Except loud hard drive

Pros: 5 hours and 42 minutes with 12 cell, great preformance, XP Pro, Intervideo Home Theater, DVD burner, Sonoma, thin and light. and QuickPlay

Cons: Intel GMA900 Graphics chipset is crappy, loud fan, and keyboard

Review: I ordered the HP Pav dv1000 like so:
o Intel Pentium M 1.73 GHz
o 512 MB of RAM
o 60 GB 5400 RPM HDD
o Intel GMA900
o Win XP Pro
o Intel Pro\Wireless BG2200
o 14" Brightview LCD
o 12 cell battery
o 1394, 6-in-1 media reader, and S-Video
I got this notebook yesterday, and I have loved everthing about it, especially the Altec Lansing Speakers. The only three things that have really bugged me:
o The crappy Intel GMA900 graphics chip (I knew this for days)
o Annoyingly bright screen when plugged in (I noticed this just last night)
o Very loud keyboard (I noticed tis when I turned it on
o Exteremly loud HDD and/or fan (I noticed this while I was typing this opinion)

But, on the plus side, I loved these features:
o 8x DVD+/-RW
o Integrated WiFi
o Centrino
o 1394 and 6-in-1 digital media reader
o Quickplay
o 1.6" thin and 6 lb light
o 512 MB of Ram
o 128 MB of Video Memory
o 60 GB 5400 RPM Drive
o 5 hr, 42 min with the 12-cell battery
o Nice Performance

Overall, it is a great PC for $1248.99.

The only game that I say my machine play was SimCity 4.

I love this thing

Pros: Light, fast, great built in wireless reception

Cons: Battery life seems a little short

Review: This laptop is great. I used to have a Dell Inspiron 2650 and this thing is so much lighter and nimble on it's feet. The upgraded x-brite screen is beautiful. the keys are well spaced and it is very comfortable to type on. the only thing that gets me is that 3 years ago, my dell that had a pentium 4 processor and all of the extras had about the same battery life as the hp. it might be some setting that i have the laptop on that is killing the battery.

dv1340 - Great for non gamers

Pros: Performance, size, weigth, screen

Cons: Nothing much really

Review: I think the laptop is underrated in the CNET review. Bashing the laptop for having internal graphics is not really a point for me. I was actually looking for one, since I am not playing games you get a great system that costs less and has better battery life than with an external graphics card. Who buys a laptop for gaming anyways?

I really like the size and weight. The screen is awesome (if you get a good one, HP seems to have problems delivering the screen in constant good quality. I returned the first unit I got because it had some dark spots in the lower corners of the screen). The dv1340 comes with the new Intel chipset and includes all the amnities you possibly want. It's design is very functional and it's amazing how much stuff they squeezed into this little thing (P-M 1.86 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HD, Blethooth and WiFi, Remote Control, LightScribe DVD Writer, ...) One important thing for me is that it is quiet. And I have to say, it's almost not audible in normal use. It's light weight and runs about 4 hours on battery (6 cell, you should be able to get at least 7 out of the optional 12 cell). For the price it is definitely one of the better laptops out there you can buy if you NOT want to play games.

Anyways, I give it a 9 because HP seems to have to quality control issues. But you have to see these things are built in China (Quanta) by people that build a lot of them and don't make a lot of money, so I guess you have to kinda understand it.

Great ... and Great with Linux; a bargain for non-gamers

Pros: Quiet, perfect form factor, connectors, great support

Cons: battery life with Linux could be better

Review: This is my first laptop purchase and after two months or so, I am totally delighted. Although, I haven't owned a laptop before, I use them at work a fair amount.

I bought from HP direct and decked the thing out pretty nicely. After comparing prices, I think if you are willing to give up a little gaming performance, you can get yourself a steal with the DV1000. I don't game at all, so this was a no brainer. What they save on graphics hardware, they more than give you on everything else.

The 14-inch screen is perfect and the wider screen is perfect. I use this thing for everything from web-surfing to web design to blogging to video editing. I do 95% of my work in Linux but before I messed with setting up Linux on it, the Windows stuff worked fine.

The wireless has great reception but I occasionally need to reboot the driver in Linux when I use it in my house. It doesn't happen with other routers, so I can't explain what's happening here. With Windows, the thing hasn't had a problem.

You might not know when you are going to use all those connectors, but they come in handy (two headsets to share watching a movie on the plane, nice speakers, all those USBs.)

The top left corner sometimes gets a little hot, but it's better than most laptops I've borrowed. I don't know if the fan turns on much because i don't even notice it.

The DVD boot is a pretty sexy thing and the Linux geek in me appreciates it.

I had some questions before and after the purchase and they were all resolved either by a technician or in the forums. They didn't freak out when I told them I was putting Linux on it, which I would say is indicative of a support organization that is not looking to pass the buck.

The keyboard is my favorite that I have used.

I'm giving it a 9, but I can't honestly tell you why I wouldn't give it a ten. This thing is pretty much perfect. It's one of those times when you just figure they had a really good group of engineers and product planning people working on the same product. Way to go HP.

dv1340us Beats others for the price

Pros: Plays media without starting windows; Stylish design with trimmings; Widescreen high-quality monitor with BrightView Monitor; remote stores inside the notebook

Cons: Gaming is just awesome in some games, but somewhat poor in others

Review: I have the dv1340 of the dv1000 series. The particular model has a Pentium M with Centrino Mobile Technology at 1.86 GHz, 1GB of RAM, 100GB Storage Space, 128MB(Shared) Video card, Bluetooth Technology, Lightscribe CD and DVD burner, and Windows XP Professional w/ SP2. The system pays attention to detail with its piano-black glossy trim around the keyboard, screen, and on the front of the system. The keypad is very trendy looking also with the black trim and white arrow keys. My first impression on it's looks is that HP certainly paid attention to the aesthetics of the model as opposed to the other, boring-looking desktops. The notebook also carries many convienences. For one, it stows a little remote in its card bay making its media experience more enjoyable. The QuickPlay feature makes it so that the user can play music stored on the pc or DVD viewing possible without actually having to start up Windows. Basically meaning it can turn on just like a tv. Other conveniences on the unit are playback and volume controls on the keyboard panel as well as a "back" and "okay" button to navigate through the web. The LightScribe DVD burner is one of my favorite features. After burning a CD or DVD, instead of printing the label for it on a printer of even just writing on it with a marker, you can simply flip the disk over and insert the disk back into the computer and the dvd burner's laser will etch an image onto the disk! Wow, I thought that was pretty awesome. Performance-wise, it is a very fast computer. It snaps through processes very, very quickly and multitasks without hindering its speed. Loading times for games and other processes are a snap. However (and a big downpoint for me) is the somewhat awkward graphic quality of the computer. It plays first-person shooters, like ones that play on the Quake 3 engine (Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, etc.) and other high-quality games very smoothly and detailed even when the graphics levels are turned up to the max. But in others, such as games like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which i certainly didn't expect to play poorly on this notebook, well, weren't as good as I had thought. A specific problem with the card is that it seems to have trouble rendering water. Sometimes it is completely invisible as in the case of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, but when it's there, it looks just like simple textures that actually look like real water on other PC's. The graphics card would turn some objects in a particular game into wierd colors and shapes while the rest are perfectly stunning and highly visual. Most of the part, however, I definitely enjoy playing the games on the PC and the glitches only happen on few, select games. The Brightview display is very colorful even in the brightest rooms and looks superior on its wide screen with 1280x760 display. The overall effect, however, is generally dissapointing. The latest video drivers and directx 9.0 were already installed prior to playing the games. As for the sound, of course, not much bass, which is definitely a typical factor in notebooks and other appliances that can only hold small speakers. But other sound quality is clear and crisp and doesn't crackle until the volume is at peak with high-pitched sound. Overall, this PC definitely provides the bang to the buck factor (my sister's SONY VAIO has almost literally half the specs and less practicality and cost 1650, as opposed to my 1500). The quality of the dv1000 seems very sturdy and uncheap. Gamers, beware of the downsides of the graphics of the unit. Otherwise, I claim the dv1000 series notebook to be the king of all multimedia entertainment notebooks.

Great notebook all around but bad gaming.

Pros: playing dvd's and music on the go

Cons: can't play any games

Review: Its great for word processing and other student type material. Excellent for music, dvd's and just plainly surfing the web any where, but if your planning to play games on this don't even try. Look some where else because gaming is not in the dictionary for this notebook.

a product well worth its price

Pros: great bright view, excellent wireless; good performance

Cons: intel graphics; too long 13.2 inch; overheat

Review: bought one from hp.com. overall this is a well designed thin and light laptop without any flaw. the best feature is bright view. u can see the keyboard at night just from the light emitted from the screen. wireless is so good that i can play oline games hook up with my neighbor's wireless signal. cpu is pretty fast, better than i expect from an"entertainment" notebook. the issues i have is video card is poor; 13.2 inch length is longer than a 15 inch notebook. and computer overheat after 30 minutes use , really hot on your lap. i would recommend this laptop for multi media use and work as well

Pros: looks great and works like it should

Cons: I wish it had an ATI card

Review: I purchased this laptop from bestbuy 2 months ago it has a DVD burner 512 MB with a celeron processor for $800. This laptop makes my 3 year old Dell look like a pile. Good Size, Good Performance, Great Laptop

Pros: has great extras, sleek, feels sturdy, many ports, just over all SOLID

Cons: i didnt know 5.6 lbs weighed so much! the widescreen is great for movies but hard on work tasks like work processing.

Review: overall very pleased. i got 2x 12cell batteries so now i can be unplugged for 12+ hours! keyboard, screen, optical drive, casing, all very sturdy. the reflective screen needs some getting used to outdoors (as expected). if only it had an embedded CF slot too (but CF-PCMCIA cars are only $5).

the only reason i didnt rate it higher is because id imagine thats what those 1/2" thick, 3 lbs, do it all notebooks should get.

Great laptop for a great price

Pros: almost everything

Cons: leds can be annoyingly bright

Review: I had an old ibm thinkpad and it finally stopped working and i started looking around for a new laptop and after extensive research i decided on the dv1000 my specs are 1.5 ghz centrino, 512mb ram, and 4800 80gb hard drive with bright view screen. The processor has no problem handling internet surfing, word processing and just about everything i need it do and since i dont do any pc gaming i dont notice any problems with the graphics chip. Also i got a system virus and i had to wipe the hard drive and with the supplied cds i was able to wipe the hard drive reload the os and a bunch of programs and system drivers, hp provides on a dvd, in less than two hours. Bottom line it is a great pc with a great battery life and a great everything

Excellent laptop, the best I ever had

Pros: Screen, CPU, Quickplay, Almost everything else

Cons: Graphics Card, one PCMCIA

Review: So far I think it is the best affordable laptop ever, the inly bad thing is the graphics card.

Best laptop...so far! (for me that is).

Pros: Great widescreen, nice WiFi, DVD+R works great, handy digital multi-reader....and so on, and so forth!

Cons: Lacks bluetooth!!!

Review: This is the fourth laptop I've had (IBM Thinkpad, Sony VAIO, Toshiba Satellite and now this little wonder!). I bought the Pavilion dv1025la and its just great. The hard drive (altough advertised at 60GB, really has like 50GB available) has a decent amount of space, acceptable amount of RAM (512MB...according to today's standards), nice clock speed on the processor...it does what I want and even so much more. Altough I do have a heavy work load, and works just great for me, I would recommend this for College students, home businesses, or as a family computer. This because it comes (once again...I´m talking about the 1025la) XP Home, the QuickPlay function that allows you to play CDs, DVDs and MP3s without booting up, and even comes with a nice remote to control playback that stores away in the PCMCIA slot.
If you're thinking about using it for work...no worries, just a few tweaks and your good to go. I got rid of the MS Works that comes preinstalled, and installed MS Office 2003 instead, got a USB Bluetooth adaptor, the expansion base with the wireless keyboard and mouse, and that's about it.
All in all, a solid purchase.
The best notebook I've had so far.

AMAZING LAPTOP!!

Pros: Bright Screen, Fast Performance, Built-In Wireless, & Light

Cons: Bad battery life unless you get the 12 cell li-ion then you get about 5 hours

Review: This is an amazing laptop! I bought it to replace my old desktop. It does everything a family pc can, but in a small and faster package. I will be using this at school in the fall. Its light enough even with the larger battery to carry around campus. I definitely reccomend the BrightView option for the screen. I'm running a system with 1.7GHz, DVD R/RW, XP Pro, Bluetooth, 80GB. I love it! They said it would take a month to build and another week to ship and I got it within 2 weeks of ordering!

EXELENT LAPTOP REALLY THE ONE

Pros: compact, light, fast

Cons: i think only the video card...

Review: I buy this laptop today, I am a computer administrator on a big company, I hate laptops b4 i see this one, it was very atractive, the disigne and the options it got, i decide to go and buy it today and i was surprissed of what it can do, the only thing is that you better add more RAM so you dont get crazzy, i make some hard work on it and never stop working. really nice HP good work on this laptop, now i love something more than my Desktop PC with 27" wide screen =)

User Rating: 9/10

Excellent size and weight, packed with great features!

Pros: Great screen, very nice keyboard, large hd, dvd burner

Cons: Lack of a "real" graphics card is the only drawback

Review: My last HP was a NX7010, I loved it and really hated giving it back when I recently changed jobs. But when I read the specs of this new model, I could not wait to get my hands on one. I purchased this laptop mainly to take on the road with me. The 14" widescreen is great for both apps and dvd viewing. The keyboard is a very comfortable size unlike many other "thin and light" laptops which sacrifice users comfort to save size and weight. The basic specs of this machine are quite good, the only down side being the integrated graphics chip. This keeps the price a bit lower but the added performance would be quite welcome for the occaisional frag session while in a hotel. The remote control is really nice for both dvds and presentations. The lightscribe included on the dvd burner is cool, but the fact that you must have hp's own cd's to use this make it a bit of a downer. The wireless antannae are quite good, as they can get a strong signal even when outside the recommended distance of many wireless hotspots. It will not replace my Inspiron XPS on my desk but is a joy to carry in comparison. If HP decides to correct their only error of leaving out a high end graphics card, I would purchase that model without question. At about $1300 you really would be hard pressed to purchase a much better machine of this size. I have seen a model by Benq which is almost identical in specs, but availability is not good at all. Hope this helps someone!

Just like a drummer in Spinal Tap

Pros: Pleasant customer support; good return policy

Cons: Both were needed

Review: Seeking to replace a beloved Vaio, I researched the specifications among sub 6 pound laptops extensively and decided that the HP (and its Compaq clone) offered the best value. I called HP Shopping and ordered a fully customized unit (b/g blue tooth, XP pro, fast drive, bright screen, remote control, etc).

The DV 1000 arrived without Bluetooth working. An uninformed CSR said the machine was miss-assembled and Fed Exed a new WiFi card to install. When it arrived I called support only to find the card that was sent was not user-installable and what was needed was a driver. After 2 more hours of Muzak and intermittent instructions, Bluetooth worked well, just like the rest of the machine. In fact while it worked my only complaint was that at some viewing angles the screen portrayed the negative of the image.

A few days following the Bluetooth debacle the machine spontaneously combusted. A high pitched pop and everything went dark. Nothing could bring it back to life.

Despite the good nature and customer concern consistently shown by HP?s customer service, I decided to take the return and refund in the three days I had left to do so.

I may have had the only lemon. Maybe your luck will be different. If you do decide to buy one, HP Shopping.com treated me well and do consider the enhanced return plan; given my experience, you?ll need it.

Watch Out, Dell, HP Has A New Revolution

Pros: Clear and bright display; lightweight; built in Bluetooth and WI-FI; fast and reliable

Cons: In the 6-in-1 media card reader there should be a CF slot; on the quick launch buttons at the top there should be an internet launch key; otherwise no other cons.

Review: In January of 2005 my 2003 Compaq 1516us died and Circuit City?s so called "Rest-Easy" warranty plan would not cover it on a stupid technicality, so I needed a new notebook. I looked at Dell, IBM and HP, and HP kicked all the competitors butt?s. So in February of 2005, I upgraded from a 2003 Compaq Presario Notebook 1516us, to the HP Pavilion dv1000, and the dv1000 is lighter weight and a lot more powerful. My old Presario 1516us weighted almost 10 pounds, and the dv1000 weights 5.30 with more features. I really like the pacific blue glowing quick launch and media buttons at the top. The clear and bright display is really easy on the eyes. The 6-in-1 media card slot is nice, but there should be a CF slot. I chose the option with built in Bluetooth and WI-FI, which is great to use with my HP iPaq?s Bluetooth, or at the local coffee shop that offers free wireless. The dv1000 is great for entertainment, wireless, and anything you can throw at this powerful little machine.

My Research Paid Off - Great Purchase!! Things I Didn't Learn from Other Reviews

Pros: Virtually silent, Quick Play feature is great, Touchpad on/off button

Cons: Touchpad is not centered, some buttons get finger prints

Review: I was planning to get a new notebook in anticipation of leaving the work world and going to grad school full-time, but spilling water on my Dell Inspiron 4000 keyboard (it was an accident I swear!) hastened the purchase. I do research for a living so I never make a purchase without exhaustive research. I read ALL of the CNET user reviews on this computer and a very good comparision of this machine and the comparable Compaq V2000 at another site. The Quick Play feature is what swayed me from the V2000. Here are the things I didn't learn from reading other opinions
1. this machine is virtually silent every once in a while I hear the hard drive spinning but that may be because I got the faster spinning (5400 rpm) 80G drive. My Dell from day one made a good bit of noise just from being on.
2. the touchpad on/off button is a blessing! I always plug in my trusty mouse plus the way I type means the lower part of my thumbs are always dragging across the touchpad. No more opening up dialog boxes and trying to disable the component!
3. HP customer service is a revelation. I haven't called for tech support strictly speaking, but the two times I called about my order and to ask some questions not answered by the website I had zero wait time and the phone was answered by people who seemed to be American and who were thoroughly knowledgeable about the product. I never had this kind of experience with Dell.
4. I feel like I bought a computer and got a DVD/CD player for free. The Quick Play feature (especially with the optional remote that fits into the slot on the left side) allows you to hit one button and instantly play a DVD or CD without booting up the computer. Considering personal DVD players avg. $200-250 this is a great feature.
5. One thing I learned from customer service that wasn't evident at the HP Shopping site is that when you select the Extra 12 cell Lithium Ion Battery they upgrade the original battery from 6 cell to 12 cell. So for an extra $99 I've got hours and hours of battery time. The battery life is great too.
6. Curb appeal. She is a pretty little thing and when she's open people stare. Okay this is not a reason to buy a notebook, but it doesn't hurt!

I gotta go play with my new baby, but if I note any flaws I'll post again.

As promised here is my follow-up. I've had the computer 1 month. Purchased a Targus neoprene notebook case (sleeve) from Office Depot. Much lighter, thinner, and softer than the big a** case I used to carry my Dell in. No velcro needed, easy to get machine in and out at airport security.

BATTERY LIFE: Awesome! The 12 cell lithium ion battery gives 6 hours of use. Having 2 of them means I can go a full day of classes and commuting without plugging in. Also the 12 cell makes the back of computer sit up about 3/4 " which allows for good air circulation and a better viewing angle. I used to use a CoolPad notebook thingy for this porpose, but now I don't need it.

Wi-Fi: The antennae (built into the top of the screen when open) works well. You just have to remember to press the "wireless" button on the keyboard and you will automatically connect to any unsecured network (unless you change the settings). While traveling in Denver I desperately needed to get a phone number from an email. I pulled out the computer put it on the driver's seat of my rental and clicked "refresh" to update the available network list when I came to red lights. In a few minutes I came upon someone's network, pulled over, logged onto my email, and retrieved my phone number (I didn't have time to find a Starbucks with an open network).

CUSTOMER SERVICE: I accidentally put the notebook in my case with the ac adapter plugged into the back--not good. After all of the juggling on the plane and in the airport when I got home the plug part was broken. I called customer service and got through quickly to someone who seemed to be in India. A new adapter is $49.99 but mine was free because of the warranty. I was concerned that my battery would die before the replacement arrived and I had mad work to do, but not to worry. The plug came by FedEx from CA to DC the very next day. I was a little frustrated because the CS guy kept saying within 3 days for delivery. When I called back hours later to inquire about expedited delivery another CS guy (also Indian) assured me that it would arrive in 1 day 2 max. Overall I was very pleased with the service.

SCREEN/MOVIE VIEWING: My dad has a big a** tv, but no DVD player so we put my computer in from of the TV in the alcove above the fireplace and using the optional remote and the QuickPlay feature we watched Ocean's 12 sitting several feet away (the same positions they use to watch the big TV). The sound was great and the picture was perfect once we adjusted the screen tilt down a bit to accomodate our lower positions. The picture was good as long as you didn't sit too far to the side of the screen (not the widest viewing angle). We enjoyed the movie and I can now justify buying the optional remote.

I would buy this machine all over agin. LOVE IT!

Amazing Best Notebook

Pros: Quick Play, hot looks, speakers in front, widescreen, great battery life, buttons for movies, music, etc., remote (optional), many ports

Cons: keys get fingerprints on them easily, makes sound every now and then if there's a dvd or cd in it

Entertainment to Go

Pros: Compact for its Screen Size. Very Portable. Fantastic Bright View Screen. Nice Sound. Its a real Looker!! Very Stylish, would give the ibook a run for its money!

Cons: No TV Tuner Card

Review: I did a lot of research before buying this laptop. Compared it with the Dell 700m and Gateway Thin & Light. The DV 1000 was a clear winner.Although I have never really used the remote control, Its a nice feature but with a 14" screen size the viewing distance is close and makes a remote pointless.

THe optional volume control headphones are pathetic. A waste of money and i got 2 of those.

Only wish it had a tv tuner card.

Movies look awesome and the sound is crystal clear.

The laptop is a real LOOKER!! Very Very Stylish!!!

Quality is farily decent, although mine came with a neon green spec on the screen. HP says they will replace it but it would take a month before i can get another laptop. A real pain in the butt! So guess i would have to live with it.

The laptop plays games like NFS Underground 2, fairly well in the lower resolution mode. GTA Vice City plays well too. The Integerated Graphics are fairly decent and plays the above mentioned games well.

The wireless picks up signals much better than my Dell 8600 laptop as it as 2 antenneas at the top corners of the screen.

The customer service is also pretty good.

I would defnitely recommend this laptop.

A business and movie entertainment computer but not games contrary to editor's review

Pros: This is a serious business computer with all the features like brightview screen, quick play, light weight.

Cons: None, if you don't play games or use Autocad

Review: This computer is much more than what a student need. It run all the business applications lightening fast. On the contrary to the editor's comment. Students mostly like to play games and this is not a computer for games. This is one of the lightest computer in the 14" widescreen catagory. The battery last over 3 hours. It is a great multimedia computer with Quick play which powers up intantly without Windows. I went through several laptops before I decided to kept this one. The only negative is the Indian accent tech support which is hard to understand and they were not as technical as the domestic customer support who has much more experience. Most of the HP tech support techs did not know what a GPS is. Does that give you a clue what you can expect ? I must say that the Indians are much friendlier than us in the states. For better pricing HP has to cut some corners on memory sharing and tech support but that is what I am willing to pay. Oh, don't buy 15" laptop if you like travelling, it is too big to lug around. I would go with either a 13" or 14" because I think 12" screen is too small and the keyboard is too tight. I like to be efficient and don't care about playing games so this is a perfect computer for me.

great entertainment laptop

Pros: screen aspect, firm keyboard, HP support

Cons: narrow screen viewing angle, limited video subsystem

Review: I bought one of these, but ultimately returned it. While it was excellent for what it was, I realized that it was more of an entertainment device than the business laptop that I wanted.

I liked the wide screen aspect, which was one of the things that drew me to it. With the 14" wide screen, you get a lot more screen than you do with a traditional 14.1" 4/3 screen. The screen was crisp and contrast-rich. However, the viewing angle is surprisingly narrow. When my g/f and I watched a DVD on the thing, the two of us had to sit immediately beside one another to watch it - otherwise one of us would have a dark or washed-out view. Also, the extra screen size adds a bit of weight to the thing, though I found it reasonable for my daily commute.

I was pleased with overall design - it's a nice looking laptop. The various buttons for volume, wireless, etc are well placed and live up to the overall usability and build quality.

The keyboard is good to the touch, with enough key travel and no keyboard flex or sag/bouncing.

I found that the video subsystem (no dedicated video RAM) made using even MS Office tools a bit slower than I liked. I'm not sure why HP wouldn't add dedicated RAM, given the screen's size and richness.

I had reason to call HP's technical support, which (in Canada) was excellent. They were able to resolve the problem immediately, and referred me to the on-board backup/restore facility.

screen discrepancy?

Pros: great if the screen is consistent

Cons: great if the screen is consistent

Review: I am having major HP screen nightmare. My roomate ordered the exact same dv1000 with brightview and so did i. HOwever, when i got mine, the screen looks dramatically darker than his. It reminded me of the old compaq tablet pc screen...there is this "mesh stocking" effect. Looks like milliions of black microdots all over the screen. Why is that? I called up HP and they sent me a different computer and IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I can understand that every computer is slightly different but this difference is like night and day. One is a truebright view with a brillant "white" and the other hsa this "muted silk stocking" effect. Anyone else having that problem? I'm so frustrated cuz the computer is techncically NOT broken so HP can't really fix it.

Best value 13" to 14" notebooks

Pros: light weight, price, QuickPlay DVD withous Windows, customer service and support

Cons: Touch pad not centered between 2 hands

Review: This laptop is light for a 14" screen. At 5.5 pound, I belief is the lightest in the 14" class. I have compared many brands and returned 2 laptops, that will give you an idea how much time I spend evaluating laptops. First look at the screen. DV1000 screen brightness level is about the same as Sony, Fujitsu, IBM and Dell when viewed at a 90 degree angle. At 45 degree angle the Fujitsu Brightview is about 10% brighter than the Sony Xbrite. The the Sony Xbrite screen is about 10% brighter than the rest of the laptops. I am comparing all the bright screen laptops and not the anti-glare screen laptops. I prefer the bright screen with slightly reflective screen than the anti-glare screen. The reason is, it is about 20% brighter at night and 300% brighter under sunlight compared to the anti-glare screen. You can work on your laptop with the sun shinning directly on the screen. The anti-glare screen has a sand blast finish and when sun light hits, the screen gets washed out. I would highly recommend the bright reflective screen. I don't think the reflection will bother anyone just don't angle the screen to the ceiling or the sky. I know that the video card shares system memory but it does not have any effect on me. I run Excel, Photoshop and Word mostly, so I think DV1000 is a very practical design for me. This memory saving design is one of the many reasons why the DV1000 is the best in value. Oh, processing speed is plenty fast for my application. The Quickplay feature is ingenuous, it can play movie without Windows and the batteries lasted for about 2:45 minutes compared to 2:15 if you use the Windows with the CPU on. Get the DVD remote control, it is only $15 and the bluetooth especially. Finally you need a MS bluetooth mouse to put the final touch to a almost perfect laptop. The Microsoft bluetooth mouse is the best mouse that I have used out of scores of mouse I tried. The AA batteries in the mouse lasted for weeks and you hardly worry about recharging. Oh, I forgot the stereo sound of the DV1000 is much more superior to the 13" Sony laptop which has very poor sound quality when playing movies. The DV1000 has the speakers up front so you can hear them loud and clear even with the screen closed. I have returned the Sony 13" which Sony charged me shipping both ways and the Fujitsu 14" with the regular screen. I have also returned the DV1000 with the anti-glare screen which HP paid for shipping both ways. I finally kept the DV1000 with the Clearview bright screen in the end. Do get the DVD 8x burner if you burn DVD, the 4x DVD burner is incompatible with some 4x DVD-R. Always use Hibernation button to turn off any laptops, your system boots up 2 times faster. The only things I have not tested are games which I grew tired off. I almost forgot about the keyboard. Because of the wider screen, DV1000 keyboard is wider than the 13" laptop keyboard therefore much easier to type. The down side is it is one pound heavier which I don't mind. Ya, do get the 2 year warranty even though you think it is a rip off and you may never use it. The reason is that it includes XP windows support and help on software installation in the future. If you don't buy it the software support is only 3 month and not one year. HP has great customer service, unlike Sony, HP doesn't do finger pointing when a third party software does not run or install properly. This tells you a lot about how Sony treats the customers. Sony quality is good but not the best, it is just a lot of advertising. You need to be objective and not get brain washed by Sony. Talk about money, buy 256 mb memory on Ebay, it is much cheaper but make sure it is laptop memory. I only take 3 minutes to put it in. At the time I wrote this review I would say that the HP DV1000 is about the best choice for multiple applications which take into account portability, speed, price, features and quality. Enough said, this is my 100 hours of experience with all the research, testing, trial & error. Hope this will help you to select the right laptop in the future.
