Don't let HP's use of the word entertainment mislead you. The company's slick-looking new thin-and-light laptop, the HP Pavilion dv1000 Entertainment Notebook, is terrific for watching DVD movies and listening to music (even without booting up the operating system), but its Intel 855GME graphics chip is too low end for serious gaming performance. Still, there's a lot to like about the HP Pavilion dv1000, including its attractive and lightweight 5.5-pound case, an abundance of handy buttons with soothing blue backlights, and an acceptable (if not stunning) overall performance. Priced at $1,400 (as of August 2004), the Pavilion dv1000 costs much less than multimedia rivals, such as the Toshiba Qosmio, but it lacks a number of higher-end features, such as the TV tuning found with the Qosmio. We recommend the HP Pavilion dv1000 as a solid and sensibly priced system for students, families, and small-business users who want to work and play on the road. The HP Pavilion dv1000 is both cool-looking and cleverly designed. Weighing in at 5.5 pounds, the laptop runs 13.2 inches wide, 9.3 inches deep, and 1.5 inches high. The Pavilion dv1000's 14.1-inch wide-aspect panel, with a 1,280x768 native resolution, is smaller than some screens found on other entertainment-focused laptops, but it's big enough for viewing DVDs and accomplishing productivity tasks. While HP has squeezed a fixed, secondary storage bay into the case for a DVD/CD-RW drive, we wish we could swap out the drive for other modules, such as an extra battery. The touch pad and the mouse buttons are on the small side, but they feature an on/off button that lets you disable the pad when it's not in use; as a result, accidental bumps won't send your cursor flying around the page.
HP has dabbled with blue status lights before--check out the HP Pavilion zt3000--and the dv1000's blue lights illuminate an entire row of handy buttons nestled above the comfortably large keyboard. In addition to the requisite power and volume controls, the Pavilion dv1000's DVD and CD quick-play buttons let you play DVDs, CDs, or MP3s stored to your hard drive without booting up. To the lower right of the keyboard are menu control keys and tiny Back/OK buttons for navigating through DVD menus; additional playback controls run along the top of the keyboard. When couch-bound, you can use the included full-featured remote control, which HP has ingeniously stashed inside the system's single Type II PC Card slot--a handy storage spot (when not filled with another card).
The Pavilion dv1000 heaps on a generous helping of ports and slots. The left edge offers ports for 56Kbps modem, Ethernet, VGA, docking, and one USB 2.0 connection. Another USB 2.0 port lies on the right edge, along with S-Video out and FireWire ports, plus a useful six-in-one card-reader slot that accepts Secure Digital, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, SmartMedia, and xD cards. The Pavilion dv1000's front edge is home to one microphone and two audio out jacks--nice for tandem DVD viewing on a plane--along with two speakers, which are slightly better than the ones on most laptops. The Pavilion dv1000 also has a convenient button to turn off the integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi radio and Bluetooth hardware to conserve battery power and make for easy plane travel. The HP Pavilion dv1000's components aren't cutting edge, but at $1,400, we wouldn't expect them to be. The system features a Pentium M processor running at a midrange 1.5GHz, 512MB of sluggish 266MHz SDRAM, a big 80GB hard drive spinning at a drowsy 4,200rpm, and a low-end Intel 855GME graphics chip that uses up to 64MB of the system's main memory. Despite these somewhat middling specs, the Pavilion dv1000 managed to produce respectable speed in CNET Labs' test benchmarks. Don't count on great gaming performance, though: our Labs' tests have proven time and again that games and this graphics chip just don't mix.
The Pavilion dv1000's other components are on the money. The 14.1-inch display, with its 1,280x768 native resolution, isn't huge, but its BrightView technology makes for an especially vivid picture. In a cost-cutting move, HP includes a DVD/CD-RW drive rather than a DVD-rewritable drive, but the included drive should be enough for most people. The Pavilion dv1000's 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware are standard laptop fare.
An optional hardware feature worth a nod is HP's new $199 xb2000 expansion base. You can plunk down the whole system into the base, adjust the base height, and raise the notebook's display to eye level to use it in place of an external monitor; in this way, it's a lot like Dell's notebook stand. The base also offers a ton of extra ports for plugging in external peripherals, such as a mouse and a keyboard.
In keeping with its consumer bent, the Pavilion dv1000 ships with Windows XP Home. HP's Quick Play application is the real star in the system's software lineup, however, allowing you watch DVDs or play music without booting up the operating system. Otherwise, the Pavilion dv1000 ships with a decent lot of software: a few Microsoft offerings, including Works, Money 2004, and Encarta Plus, as well as Sonic's RecordNow for burning CDs and InterVideo's WinDVD for watching DVDs when the system is booted up. Mobile application performance
The HP Pavilion dv1000 doesn't quite measure up to other comparable systems. Running an older Banias-based 1.5GHz Pentium M, it lagged significantly behind the Sony VAIO VGN-A190--two systems powered by Dothan-based Pentium M processors at 1.8GHz and 1.7GHz, respectively. Nevertheless, the Pavilion dv1000 is about average for a Pentium M 1.5GHz-based system and adequate for most office and content-creation use.

Find out more about how we test notebooks. Where a slower processor handicaps the Pavilion dv1000's mobile application performance, that slowness is a boon for the dv1000's battery life. Running a 10.8V, 4,400mAh (48WHr) battery, the Pavilion dv1000 lasted more than four hours in our office and content-creation tests. The Sony VAIO VGN-A190, with an 11.1V, 4,000mAh (44WHr) battery, and the Dell Inspiron 700m, with a 14.8V, 2,200mAh (33WHr) battery, couldn't manage even three hours. The Pavilion dv1000 possesses above-average battery life.

After years of sticking it to customers with toll-based tech support, HP has finally switched to a toll-free tech-support number. You can call that number 24/7 during your warranty period for free help from a live rep. The Pavilion dv1000's base warranty runs for one year--an average length from most manufacturers--and it includes free parts and labor via mail-in service. HP offers a number of extended-warranty options; three years of service and accidental-damage protection costs $300.
The documentation for the Pavilion dv1000 is particularly good. Several well-written manuals are included; they detail everything about the notebook, from its Quick Play software to its remote control. Another service highlight: for the life of the warranty, you can chat for free in real time with a tech-support rep on HP's support Web site.

DV100 - Rock Solid and adorable (1.5 years)
Pros: Eye turner - she draws a crowd everywhere even tho she's older
Battery life is unbelievable
She's so light, you think you have a netbook
Graphics are not bad, sound is darn respectable
DVD/CD without boot up is great - who needs an MP3 player?
Cons: Lost the harddrive year one, replaced in 5 days under warranty by retailer
Overheats - resolved with cooling platform (that pink screen is freaky)
Not a gamer, so don't miss that aspect
Bites not to have an HDMI port
I do wish she had an HDMI port, especially with all the new Netflix/Blockbuster oneline viewing options. I am considering a second laptop just for the higher end entertainment/graphics options. But this laptop makes me feel as confident as having a desktop on hand.

My review...3 years later
Pros: EXCELLENT battery life, durable, great sound, ability to play DVD's without turning on, wireless,
Cons: Overheats occasionally. Can't think of anything else....

Home/Office work
Watch movies
listen to music

For those purposes it has been beyond excellent. This laptop is PERFECT for college students or small business owners. I honestly have no complaints. I've never had to replace anything or get it repaired-and I've dropped it more than once. The original battery is still up and running (though I may need to replace it soon as I think the lifespan has decreased a bit). I've never timed it but the thing last for hours! (5? 6?) It's very silient and is very easy on the eyes. Overall, I would definetely recommend this laptop. I've used other friends laptops and I can honestly say that I much prefer mine. I still get compliments about it.

I won't buy HP again
Pros: good for entertainment (DVD etc)
Cons: shoddy hardware
Within the first year the battery failed and the internal fan went, so now it overheats.
Within two years my laptop monitor began to regularly black out.
I agree with the review comments about slow speed.
Sure the DVD works ok but it whirrs loudly.
From what I can tell these laptops aren't sold any more -- which is great news for others who won't have to put up with poor HP worksmanship.
At the risk of being accused of naivety: as a regular consumer, I'd expect a laptop to last longer than 2.5 years. They are a big investment and you would think that the outlay would give you a longer use lifetime.
I see no point in spending money now to fix these problems.
And with Windows XP being phased out and given the problems I read regarding Vista, I'm going to do what I should have done a long time ago: get a Macbook Pro.

Defective- will be a total loss
Pros: lightweight, ease of use, nice screen
Cons: over heats, bad customer service
I sent in my laptop for the 2nd time of the same issue in a year. I received the laptop back the day after HP received it for repair. I asked the 1st rep I spoke to what was done since the customer/repair receipt inside the box didn't have anything filled out; although I could tell they replaced my battery. All the rep kept saying was that the expected delivery date is December 19th after I told him several times I RECEIVED IT BACK ALREADY the day before!!! Again, he said I'd receive my notebook on the 19th. I hung up so I could try someone else.
The 2nd rep couldn't find records of anything except that I was out of warranty. When I called in for repair I was told there were 20-some days left under warranty so I went ahead and sent my laptop in. I figured they must have extended my warranty and vaguely recall being told this the last time it was repaired.
It took an hour and a half on the phone today to find out that the fan was replaced in addition to the battery. But they didn't fix the heat issue. It gets so hot on the bottom left that even the keyboard is hot- and it's been running for only 20 minutes. The fan is constantly running trying to cool things down. This rep also kept saying that it probably was never picked up. I had to explain to him several times that the label on the shipping box shows it came from the service center, my laptop was in plastic which I had not shipped it in, and there was a customer/repair receipt inside the box!
Here's the timeline:
Purchased 12/15/05- opened on xmas
Repaired for heat issue 12 '06 (within the 1-year warranty).
Sent in for repair for the same problem again 12 '07.
Of course, now they won't repair my laptop again (which I just got back) because now they've discovered that I've been out of warranty for over a year???? (which isn't true) and to purchase a warranty would cost $256 for 1-year. Not worth the cost only to have the same issue again. There is a defect in this product. After reading some of the other posts, I'm not the only one.
So basically, a 2-year old $1250 laptop will be a total loss. Thanks HP! Regarding the 2nd rep I spoke to today, he couldn't even find any records of the initial repair order.
Thankfully I will be getting an iMac this Christmas and am thrilled! I would never buy another HP product and suggest others don't as well.

Pros: Nothing is good
Cons: Piece of crap

Mediocre at best
Pros: Very nice â??Blingâ??
Cons: Disappointing Quality
I will start this by saying the laptop has some excellent â??Blingâ?? by that I mean it has some unique and inspired specifications that create a very â??need to haveâ?? feel about this machine. The all-in-one card reader was an excellent tool to have along with all the other outstanding media related additions that come with this product such as the ability to play CDâ??s / DVDâ??s without booting windows, the mini remote control, the acceptable speakers that make this laptop loud enough for 2 people to comfortably watch a DVD on it, hot buttons and external ports that allow this system to be used as a makeshift (and expensive) DVD player. I would also like to acknowledge the good battery life and nice bright LCD screen
Cons â??Disappointing qualityâ??
On this note I would like to start with the Cons of this product, although each person will have a different opinion concerning their laptop providers be it HP, Dell, Toshiba or one of the other large name brands, I felt that there was too much added â??garbageâ?? that I either would never have use for or advertisements for things I wouldnâ??t want and this is why I prefer to do a fresh format and reinstall with my own preferences on what extras I receive. The integrated graphics on this product are somewhat lacking as well, for a laptop that is pushing the title of a media laptop a name brand card with its own dedicated ram should have been selected, the integrated that comes standard isnâ??t bad for just watching a few DVDâ??s and spreadsheet work but it cant handle the load for graphics editing, light gaming or extended use. Although I have not opened this laptop for fear of my warranty, I can easily tell the cooling solution for this laptop is very sub par. When I contacted the store that I bought this laptop in they simply replied â??ohh no everythingâ??s fine, it just runs a little warmâ?? this was an accurate statement but itâ??s not ok to run at the heat this thing does. Suspended in air I am getting 2 readings one at 48c Hard Drive temp and one of 67c Processorâ?¦ work load is hugging 80c processor and then an emergency shut down (suspended in air on two thin pieces of wood in average room temperature of 17c). These are readings after I had owned this for 3 months, over the months it started to get worse until it got up to this state ( I want to mention I kept this laptop is a dust sensitive environment and in a storage bag when not in use). Part of this heat problem came from poor air circulation, although this product had several exhaust and intake ports they didnâ??t seem to pull in enough air with its 1 fan.
Conclusion â??Mediocre at bestâ??
I want to close this review in saying this was a laptop â??I wanted to loveâ?? and I hated to use the title â??Mediocre at bestâ?? because other than the video card and heat issues it had some promising features that should be standard on all media laptops, but when the air circulation is so poor that it has to be suspended in air for regular work and cant be held on your lap is believe it is unworthy of the name â??laptopâ?? and should be acknowledged as a â??Labtopâ??. If I had known what I know now before I bought this I most likely would have bought a Toshiba.
I just wanted to add that the quotation marks don?t seem to work and after reading the other peoples under 4/10 evaluations I see a lot of common occurrences and would like to point out that a lot of big name brands use Canada and US based technical support but when it comes to billing they will send you to a out of country call center just to confuse the average consumer it seems (speculation of course because I doubt I would ever get an honest answer that would seem right).

Suprisinly good all around
Pros: tech support, features, screen, battery life, weight, design
Cons: matereals, Intel graphics
In the past I had an HP Desktop and it had motherboard problems, Hard drive problems, and heat problems but I decided to give HP a second chance after hearing that their laptops were a diffrent story.
The laptop is 1.7Ghz, 2Gb ram, 160gig HD, DVD+-RW and so on for $800 (from craigslist). I am a Apple person now but I got this HP for browser testing and running Win/Linux apps. I was impressed with the industrial design. Everything is layed out nicely and looks good. The features such as the remote and doubble headphone jacks are nice. It turned into my standard movie watching computer as well.
Unfortunately as I was watching a movie my cat knocked a large glass of water on to the keyboard and fried the motherboard. Tech support was helpful but being the poor college student that I am, they weren't able to make my motherboard magicaly work again. They did hold my hand throught the delema. Eventually I rebuilt the laptop from the processor up and managed to pinpoint the problem. It was a bad HD controller and the old 160gig was shorting the whole Motherboard. I had a spair 40gig lying around but the HD controller was still damaged. I later managed to jump it with a Linux live CD and eventually got the thing fully operational again, minous 120gigs. But the harware is fairly resilliant and I am extreamy impressed with the support and the hardware. A very well thought out laptop and I am considering looking into HP again in the future.

Great product from HP
Pros: Great battery life, quick and snappy processor, light
Cons: Poor graphics, briteview screen, casing easy to be scratched
This computer is very thin (at 1.1" at the front and 1.5" in the back) and is very light at 5.2 lbs.
However, it uses the Intel GMA 900 graphics core, which means slow graphics. It does complete everyday tasks relatively well, but this is not the ideal solution for gaming. On the 3DMark2001 SE, it scored a 3,500 pts. This computer also does not support hardware-based lighting, but does support Pixel Shader 1.4.
The Briteview screen can be quite annoying because of the reflection.
The casing, like most HP products, is easily scratched. Already, after a week after purchase, my case has attracted one scratch mark!!
From my previous experience, I did not find much problems with my first product. I did contact customer service once or twice and even used HP's live chat program. The technicians in all cases were quite curtious and knowledgable and were willing to help me solve my problems.
Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with this product and I'll buy my next product from HP.

This is very good "value" laptop
Pros: Beautiful Screen, QuickPlay Option and Buttons, abundant ports and drives, excellent battery life. This is a very portable laptop for its feature set
Cons: Keyboard is a bit "messy" with too many colors and letters/numbers, speakers are average, graphics card is shared memory
Mine had 512 MB RAM (upped to 1 GB) and a sufficient 80 GB of Hard Drive space.
Screen is spectacular despite the "black screen effect" at certain angles. Normal use at normal angles of viewing will not cause any issues. Multiple watchers of DVD movies might have to sit a little closer (which might not be a bad thing in certain cases
Two headphone jacks in front are a good plus and so is the remote control feature although it does eat up the only PCMCIA slot for its storage.
The silver top of the laptop can be scratched due to the paint job unless you are carefull handling it.
This laptop is too cute and nifty looking to be a serious business machine (the comparable Compaq versions would be a better option for business use since they are more "blah" than the DV1000 series)
I only ended up paying $699 + tax for a display model that was in excellent shape (knocked down from $1099 in $150, $100, $50 rebates and a store markdown.
For the price I paid, there is obviously NO laptop out there that is comparable.
I always believe in getting my toys cheap because I enjoy them more that way without worrying about over babying them.
It should be possible to get this laptop at a $799 - $899 range after an instant rebate at many stores and that is still a very good value for what you will be getting.
A) Portability - Yes, a Qosmio offers the most features of any laptop but it is more of a desktop on wheels.
B)Battery life - It is not much of a "lap"top if it is tethered to a charger on a desk all the time.
You MUST be able to pick up and go for a laptop to be truly useful in the real world of digital cameras, wifi hotspots
The DV1000 manages to do the above (you can even get a extended battery) for a very good price
Also, all the newer compaq batteries and AC adapters are interchnageable with the newer HP ones so that is a definite plus too.

Very controversial product
Pros: Nice design, good features, extra long batery life
Cons: DVD drive makes weird noises, AC cord doesn't stay where it's supposed
OK, now my story...
I have bought this product this summer and was more than happy with it. I chose to customize computer myself, and ended up paying around $1,500 for computer + $300 for accessories.
First month everything was like a dream - computer worked fast, sound was smooth, battery lasted enough to watch two DVDs! (using quick play)
And then one day I shut down computer to enter quick play mode, and boom! No actual bang, but I get a HDD error. I consider myself an advanced computer user, so I have tried removing HDD, and so on - nothing helped. DEAD
So I call HP and they "diagnose" that it is HDD problem - DUH that's what error says. They gladly agree to replace my HDD with all my freaking pictures in it (I didn't have backups). The only problem was that I am from Europe and I was about to leave US in three days.
HP still sent an HDD to my US address, and one guy agreed to bring it to me after a month, when going to Europe. So I went home with a dead laptop and waited...
In a month I get my new HDD, install it, and... same freaking error
Anyway, now I'm a happy user and I like my laptop. It works fine, life is good, until one day, after class I sent my computer to hibernate, go to my office and it does not turn any more. I contact HP and they tell me to do power drain procedure (they told me to do the same procedure last time – do they know anything else?) Eventually they tell me to send them the computer, which is not the best idea, considering that Iÿm in Europe and shipping computer to US (HP would not cover it because warranty is US only) would cost me around $700 one way.
Again, I take my computer to local HP office and this time the verdict is dead motherboard. And the options? Well, they offered me to get a non-brand computer and install some of the parts from my HP laptop. Cost: ~$600 – no freakingÿ way!
Lucky me, I study in American college, where most of the faculty is American, so one nice guy takes my computer back to HP around Christmas. Now it has been fixed, but I have to way for my cousin (who lives in US) to bring it back. Probably the biggest mistake that I have made was not including battery, because my cousin canÿt check if the computer is actually working.
Well, at least I have a month to think of what to do next: I struggle between selling option and keeping option. I must admin that I love my computer, but if it would break for the third time, Iÿd kill myself.
This is it kids

great college notebook
Pros: lightweight, dependable battery life, nice featues
Cons: none so far, though remote is hard to figue out sometimes
fortunately i got it at sams club, where you can get some great deals on a fairly well equipped computer. they had the dv1315 for the same price. i figured trading the screen size (widescreen 14 from WS 15.4) would be worth it for the easier portability.
i havent really noticed the missing screen size.. the wide screen is nice, and has the upgraded CLEARVIEW screen. though i never minded the "regular" laptop screens.
this one has an 80 gb Harddrive, a dvd burner, and 1 gb RAM. also the remote control which fits in the card slot.
MCE would have been nice, but I dont really have a practical use for it. all this was 998 dollars, so agreat deal for a computer not needing any upgrades for a good length of time if at all.
i dont believe they are offering the 1315 anymore, but do have the 1515, but i saw that listed for about 200 bucks more.
i believe they do have the dv5000 model, which actually has a larger screen in about the same price range, with an AMD Turion chip.
Overall, i find this to be a very good value and prob. the best computer ive owned.

Excellent computer for students who watch DVDs
Pros: Light-weight, bright screen, full size keyboard, multiple USB ports, remote control
Cons: weird mouse placement, poor game graphics
Besides any pet peeves, there are really only two minor drawbacks to this computer. Namely, the graphics card really IS as bad as everyone says. As a casual gamer, this was a mild letdown at first, but as a student, it's a blessing in disquise - as it means I haven't wasted hours and hours playing Age of Empires III when I should have been studying. Also, you'll find the touch pad to be strangely located, it's slightly to the right of keyboard-center. While the full-size keyboard more than makes up for this strange oversight, typing can occasionally set off the curser in a different location (a minor annoyance). But because you can turn the touchpad on and off, it's not at all a problem if you attach an external mouse.
Overall, after a few minor upgrades in RAM and hard drive space, I find this to be an excellent out-of-the-box laptop, and look forward to many years of enjoyable service. Lastly, you can't go wrong with HP's student discounts and free FedEx shipping!

Great Experiance with the dv1331se
Pros: Great size, screen, software, and features. Suprisingly solid performance.
Cons: Screen angle can be a bit tricky is changing light situations.
I purchased this laptop to replace an aging and semi-reliable Dell 600M. I have been very happy with everything about the machine. I was also super surprised to find the preinstalled and shipped software package to include many packages I have paid for in the past. I have been using this laptop for about 4 months now and I thing it is the best machine I have bought, ever. The Media Control keys are super simple and accessible. One point to make is that the Quickplay bootless DVD and music features are alien to me; I can't seem to figure out how this is supposed to work.
I bought the dv1331 a bit over a year ago and when the warentee was out the power supply took a crap and it won't even power up! Poor quality. Also I was looking at Vista, and the video card sucked so bad I can't even upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I paid over $1300, with the heck.

Excellent machine (dv1331se from Best Buy)
Pros: Functionality
Cons: Screen angle, XP Home edition
The Quickplay feature is just awesome - and more so while watching movies with the widescreen.
The only quibbles (?):
The sceen viewing angle is important - you often need to adjust the screen to view at 90 degrees for good image quality and brightness.
If you are one that makes power point presentations then remember that because of the widescreen, the aspect ratio is different from most LCD projectors - so, when you plug your projector in, your laptop screen is smaller, so your window extends below/above the physical limits of the screen (I am a windows novice so there might be a way around this that I don't know of).
Also when you are in slideshow mode in powerpoint, the screen gets flattened and stretched out.
Also, the remote that comes with the machine can be used to advance Powerpoint slides - isn't that just great!
I personally will take the above difficulties - just for the 'widescreen' - which is awesome for watching DVDs.
Final buying advise:
Buy a mac over a pc - it is just so much more simple and user friendly.
Buy the HP dv1000 series over any Sony Vaio (which I also use a fair bit). The Sony's are overrated - the only thing they have going for them are their great screens.

Cons: Issues, customer service, warranty, reliability
HP has been extremely uncooperative. They are not willing to replace or refund even though this thing is definitely a lemon. The manager indicated that the laptop would have to break down two more times before they are obligated to provide me with a replacement. I would not recommend buying this laptop at all. Great value, no problems for 7 months and counting
Pros: Bright and easy to read widescreen display, better battery life than I expected, good wireless, great looking, no problems so far
Cons: Nothing I can think of
-To start, the dv1000 is easily the best-looking laptop I've seen or used. The inside is black matte plastic with accents of polished black, and the outside is silver. The also great-looking V2000 is nearly the inverse of this scheme, and it's also great looking. The build quality is far, far better than the Gateway and Dell laptops I've owned. Everything just feels solid and well-made. I've thrown it in a bag plenty of times and there aren't any scratches on the case.
-The 14.1-inch widescreen (I didn't go for the Brightview option) is crisp, bright, and easy to read. I was skeptical at first about the widescreen, but I've grown to love it. Now it feels weird not to have it.
-The dv1000 has a really nice feature that the V2000 didn't have called QuickPlay. You can play CDs and DVDs without booting up Windows, which saves a lot of time.
-The best laptop speakers I've used before. Considering that the last one I had, a $2000 Dell, had speakers that never worked from day 1, I was pretty impressed. They're mounted on the front instead of inside, so the screen being closed doesn't change the sound. Also included are two headphone jacks, so you can enjoy it with a friend
-The keyboard feels solid, not cheap like some laptop keyboards, and the touchpad is good too. It has an on-off button, a very handy feature for typing. There's a mute button (useful), volume up/down buttons, controls for the QuickPlay feature, and stop, forward, play, and backward buttons.
-I got the integrated wireless option, which provides great reception for my wireless cable internet. My previous laptop with a wireless card cut out all the time. There's also a wireless on/off button, which saves battery power when you don't need the wireless
-I find my dv1000 faster than my Dell desktop with a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4. Mine has a Pentium M at 1.6 ghz and 512 mb of RAM, and a 60 gb hard drive.
-The computer looks like it should be heavier than it is. I've dragged it around the airport in a bag, it's nice and light for its size.
-There are plenty of ports for a relatively small machine. Three USB 2.0 ports placed all around, two headphone jacks, Ethernet and phone, external monitor, S-video, Firewire, a 6-in-1 media card reader, microphone jack, and a port for an optional docking station
-The fan hardly ever goes on, and I don't notice it at all unless it's dead quiet around. This is far improved from the Gateway 400 that had a fan like a jet engine (you wanna talk about abysmal quality, go find yourself a Gateway 400)
-Battery life is good. One warning, the 12-cell battery sticks out a lot from the bottom of the computer. Don't get this unless you really need the extra life. I have the standard 6-cell, and I've gotten nearly 4 hours out of it.
-Price and ordering process: I paid about $800 for my dv1000, custom built from HPshopping.com. It was delivered in about half the time they said to expect it in.
-Support: I had to deal with HP customer support briefly before I got it because of something with my credit card. I found it fine, although other people here had awful experiences with HP customer support
Overall: I would recommend the HP dv1000 or the Compaq V2000 to anybody. I love this computer. There is not one thing I've had to 'settle with' or 'get used to'. Since I got it in April 2005, I haven't had any problems with it. This is far and away the best computer I've ever owned, and I paid less for it than any of my previous ones.

I am happy I made my choice on that model after a long and cofusing search period !
Pros: powerful, fast enough for my application, smart look, fari battery life, good price for the package
Cons: comes with windows xp home edition, USB ports cause occasional hangings ( I beleive its an OS problem) when used, graphic card shares the core memory, build not solid enough for rough use
my only problem was the mobility, with a 17" wide screen it was a little bit hard to climb floors, assit meetings ion various locations, take my laptop back home every day after work and most of all use it on the plan when flying in economy class (I beleive you all see what I mean, not enough room for you and your legs already)
So I decided to look for something as powerful as my previous LW70 Express but in smaller size, and I found this beauty from HP laying there and seducing me with its charming look! I have it for about a month now and I am very satisfied with its performance, am just disappointed with the low cutting on the graphic card, but it is doing fair enough on some games that are considered resources consuming! my only reel problem is the USB ports, they keep hanging everytime I plug a USB device (mouse, keyboard, webcam, etc), but according to microsoft support there is a problem with the embeded drivers for the USB ports, am still working on the issue but its not really a big bother.
my conclusion, if you are looking for a laptop that can fit allmost everywhere, powerfull enough for your applications, got all the connectivity technics known(bluetooth, Wirless G, LAN, Modem, USB, FireWire) etc, then this is the right laptop for you!
You have to be carefull when you are handeling it though, because it does not come anywhere near the latest IBM modeles on that lavel. But hey, paying extra 1000 USD to get the same config in a titanum case did not convince me, after all I am 30 years old and I know how to take care of my gadgets.
the specs I got
processor : 2GH Pentium M Centrino
RAM: 1 GB DDR2 (look for the 1375ea model)
Hard Disk : 80 GB
OS: Windows XP SP2 Home Edition
Connectivity : Wirless LAN, LAN, Bluetooth, USB, FireWire

Perfect for a college student, even my friends love it!
Pros: entertainment: an optional remote control, wireless, optional CD/DVD burner and player, brightview screen, great sound, plays DVDs/CDs without booting up. Affordable, lightweight, customizable.
Cons: Nothing significant...the remote doesn't have the ability to fast forward or rewind through a song, but who cares! It has a remote!
In choosing a notebook I didn't know what to look for and the technical details, so I used the notebook recommendation quiz by ExactChoice (which is on the menu to the left). I specified that I wanted a light laptop, lots of space for mp3s and digital photos, amongst other things. The quiz revealed the dv1000 as a great option for me, I bought it, and I'm beyond delighted with my purchase.
I'm not the only one who's impressed by my laptop. Since it arrived in the mail 5 days ago, both of the campus computer technicians that helped me set it up commented on the nice features, look and size of it. Other girls on my dorm floor commented that I have "one of the nicer laptops". Even when I just tell my friends about it's cool features, without seeing it, they're impressed.
As a student, I love being able to download tons of mp3s (I used HP's customization option to include a big hard drive), watch my DVDs, surf the 'net and view online media. The dv1000 definitely caters to those interests and then some. HP created a remote control you can use with the notebook (how cool is that?!) so I can adjust the volume, pause, play, etc. just like a TV. This notebook also has a digital media card reader that recognizes 5 card types, it's perfect for my digital camera. Furthermore, I can't wait to upload lots of my pictures from my digicam to view them on the gorgeous display. With the free upgrade to a Brightview screen, everything I see looks much more vivid and clear. While we studied for a quiz, one of my classmates took notice and gazed at the screen in awe. He commented, "Whoa, your screen is so bright" and that his Dell notebook screen was dull in comparison. I've decided that I definitely don't need a DVD player and I plan on watching lots of movies on it with my friends. Additionally, this little computer is very quiet so it doesn't interfere with my movies or music playing.
I'm enjoying the wireless connectivity. I can do research for papers on the 'net, listen to online music, and instant message my friends in any of the lounges or hotspots on campus. The long battery life helps me enjoy the life without the wire longer.
Let's not forget about the look and size of this laptop. "Sleek" is the word that comes to mind when describing it, as well as "eye-catching". When I open up the notebook to reveal its blue backlit buttons, useful controls and bright screen, it's obvious that its truly exceptional computer. Furthermore, I'm very pleased with its small size and light weight because I can effortlessly carry it around campus or take it on trips to my parents' house.
Overall, I love this notebook and I'm so glad I found it. I highly recommend it to college students looking for a notebook to greatly enhance their college years, or any digital media lovers who want a superior entertainment experience.

Exellent value, excellent support, horrific quality
Pros: Ideal feature set, esepecially for the price
Cons: Quality, quality, and quality; incompetent warranty repair
First, the good:
The machine looks cool, comes with cool features like a remote control (which I actually use when I hook up my dv1000 to my home A/V system & use it as a jukebox).
It's a good weight, and since I tend to spread out horizontally & want lots of working area without taking up the entire table at Starbucks, the screen shape & size were ideal for my needs.
The performance is adequate, not stellar (forget playing the latest games with that Intel graphics card), the wireless reception is excellent compared with any laptop of any brand I've used, and the battery life for the extended-life battery (easily exceeding 4 hours without even dimming the screen) is superb.
Lastly, the customer service and tech support *representatives* (we'll get to the actual service in a sec) are extremely friendly and helpful.
Now, the ugly:
One minor gripe and one catastrophic deal-breaker. The minor gripe is with the fit-and-finish. The machine looks great in photos, but its plastic 'immitation metal' and several other cheap touches are a bit disappointing in person. Overall, to anyone within 5 feet of your machine, it'll look like you cheaped-out to save money. But for the price and all its other benefits, who cares?
Now for the deal-breaker: my first unit arrived with a burned-out pixel. Not so great for a computer they're marketing for portable video applications. After packing it up, shipping it back to HP (I had customized mine on HP.com), getting the run-around on the phone for over an hour about whether I'd get the same deal I got on the first machine, waiting another few days for the next machine, and finally getting it, guess what? Another burned-out pixel. Packing it back up again, shipping it back again, and getting bounced from one customer service rep to another again, this time in a much nastier mood, I finally ordered a third one (just bc there still wasn't any other machine I wanted, and I figured, hey, what are the odds?), waited, finally received a machine with 100% functioning pixels.
Unfortunately, the saga continues. Ten months after receiving my 3rd machine and really thorougly enjoying it the entire time, I developed a motherboard issue which forced me to repair my HD, then repair my Windows at least once a day. I sent it back (still 2 months left on the warranty) with a comprehensive, typed description of the problem, its triggers, the error messages I saw, etc... I also stressed that the problem seemed to involve heat and heavy hard drive or CPU use and would probably work when they first got it despite the obviously severe problem it has. I also included my cell # and told them they could call me as often as they wanted as long as they fixed the damn thing. 7 days later, with no computer to use the entire time, I get my dv1000 back with an invoice saying "problem couldn't be replicated." Nothing was fixed.
So now that the problem has returned and the machine I depend on for my livelihood is non-functioning, tech support suggests that I send it back, live without a computer for another 7 days, be content with their assurance that they'll "try to make sure it doesn't happen again."
My other option is to eat the cost of this machine which only worked for 10 months (versus my 6 year-old Dell laptop which has never had a single problem and still works), and save my time deailing with a warranty that's obviouisly intended to avoid making costly repairs.
Conclusion:
Overall, the design, features, and customer service for the machine are excellent. But since it's now totally non-functional after 10 months and HP is clearly unwilling to take its warranty commitments seriously, I really, really, really wish I had bought a Dell or a Sony. Having gonen to college in Palo Alto, I had always thought of HP a a blue-chip brand. Now, there's no way I'll ever buy another HP product in my life.
Good luck to everyone in their search, and I hope you end up making a much better decision than I did.

One experience I never want to repeat
Pros: Good price and decent features
Cons: Horrible customer service, faulty machine.
I embarked upon a search for the perfect notebook that I could use for the next four years of college that lie ahead of me. I looked for a computer that could satisfy the criteria I set up for myself:
1) Good, fast performance (Pentium M or bust)
2) Good entertainment features for MP3s, CDs, DVDs, etc.
3) Good customer service and warranty (just in case my roommate decides to do cartwheels in our room and accidentally kicks over the notebook)
4) Decent harddrive space (Minimum 40GB, Max 100)and RAM (512-1gig would be fine)
I decided to purchase the HP dv1000 on hpshopping.com because of the rebates and extra $100 student discount for a final total of $1456.00. This is when the problems began.
Apparently, the credit card information did not match up with the one in our bank database, and verifying this information took many phone calls, over 2 hours of hold time with hp, frustrating communication issues with outsourced operators in India, and a verbal sparring match with one particularly rude hp operator. Even my bank told me that HP's security protocol was unusally complicated and rife with bureaucratic redundancies. After 2 weeks of waiting, my order was finally verified and shipped out. I was told that I would be later reimbursed for the $70 2-day business shipping HP had to use to get the computer to me quickly.
Well finally, the computer arrived yesterday afternoon. Everything seemed to be fine, except for the DVD video quality. I tried watching "The Last Samurai" using their InterVideo DVD player, but the entire picture was unacceptably grainy. After speaking with an HP technician online, the problem was slightly fixed, but not noticeable better.
Later on, I tried to rip my CD collection into the computer's 100gig hardrive. The first 10 CDs were fine, but suddenly my computer refused to read or recognize any CDs. In addition to that, my computer was lagging so much that it froze on occassion. I tried calling HP twice, but was put on hold for 30 minutes each time and never got through to an operator. I talked to an HP technician online, or rather, 5 different technicians online after continually being disconnected from their server or system. One techie was rude and condescending (probably assuming that females are always clueless about electronics, which is entirely untrue), telling me he didn't know what else to do but have me send in my computer for an exchange or replace my entire CD drive. I didn't like his advice, and spoke to 4 other people 4 different times, to no avail. On my fifth online attempt to speak someone who knew how to help me, I ended up speaking with the same, rude techie! Finally, at 1:30am, I called HP and got through to another techie. He told me I had too many startup options, and helped solve the issue with my slow computer. But my CD drive still won't work! I gave him my BIOS info, hoping for an update that may help the issue. But the phone techie told me my computer issues had nothing to do with the CD drive or OS, but he'll call again tomorrow to check up on the status of the machine.
I have since called HP and asked for FedEx to come pick up my computer for a full refund. In addition, I have just placed an order on CircuitCity.com for a Toshiba Qosmio AV205. Originally, I wanted this computer but wasn't able to because of the price. Now there is a $300 online rebate available, and I am more than willing to pay a little extra for a computer that I know will deliver stellar performance and features. I have also read many reviews that praise the superior customer service that Toshiba offers.
I understand that my situation is particular to my circumstances and may be an isolated occurrence, but my problems with HP customer service is not rare! I have had many customer service issues with HP regarding my digital camera and all-in-one psc printer. I suppose I am to blame, because you know what they say: Fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. (But don't ask our president to repeat that aphorism... you'll only end up more confused conservative slap-happy)

EXCELLANT (just don't buy it from BEST BUY)
Pros: Fast, Bright, Long life battery, easy to use
Cons: HP customer part service thru Best Buy stinks !
Customer service above the norm, just make sure you avoid buying it from BEST BUY stores. I took mine in for a screen failure (after only 6 months, a bit disappointing), the repair took 2 weeks, and they lost my charger in the process. Nearly 3 months to get a new one. I complained 4 times, found out they don't take responsibility for their mistakes. One offer after 2 months was to have me to pay for one until mine came in (then I could send in the paperwork and get my money back ! Ouch !). Make the name of the place Bad buys. Save yourself some agita, buy it elsewhere.

o The crappy Intel GMA900 graphics chip (I knew this for days)
o Annoyingly bright screen when plugged in (I noticed this just last night)
o Very loud keyboard (I noticed tis when I turned it on
o Exteremly loud HDD and/or fan (I noticed this while I was typing this opinion)
But, on the plus side, I loved these features:
o 8x DVD+/-RW

dv1340 - Great for non gamers
Pros: Performance, size, weigth, screen
Cons: Nothing much really
I really like the size and weight. The screen is awesome (if you get a good one, HP seems to have problems delivering the screen in constant good quality. I returned the first unit I got because it had some dark spots in the lower corners of the screen). The dv1340 comes with the new Intel chipset and includes all the amnities you possibly want. It's design is very functional and it's amazing how much stuff they squeezed into this little thing (P-M 1.86 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HD, Blethooth and WiFi, Remote Control, LightScribe DVD Writer, ...) One important thing for me is that it is quiet. And I have to say, it's almost not audible in normal use. It's light weight and runs about 4 hours on battery (6 cell, you should be able to get at least 7 out of the optional 12 cell). For the price it is definitely one of the better laptops out there you can buy if you NOT want to play games.
Anyways, I give it a 9 because HP seems to have to quality control issues. But you have to see these things are built in China (Quanta) by people that build a lot of them and don't make a lot of money, so I guess you have to kinda understand it.

Great ... and Great with Linux; a bargain for non-gamers
Pros: Quiet, perfect form factor, connectors, great support
Cons: battery life with Linux could be better
I bought from HP direct and decked the thing out pretty nicely. After comparing prices, I think if you are willing to give up a little gaming performance, you can get yourself a steal with the DV1000. I don't game at all, so this was a no brainer. What they save on graphics hardware, they more than give you on everything else.
The 14-inch screen is perfect and the wider screen is perfect. I use this thing for everything from web-surfing to web design to blogging to video editing. I do 95% of my work in Linux but before I messed with setting up Linux on it, the Windows stuff worked fine.
The wireless has great reception but I occasionally need to reboot the driver in Linux when I use it in my house. It doesn't happen with other routers, so I can't explain what's happening here. With Windows, the thing hasn't had a problem.
You might not know when you are going to use all those connectors, but they come in handy (two headsets to share watching a movie on the plane, nice speakers, all those USBs.)
The top left corner sometimes gets a little hot, but it's better than most laptops I've borrowed. I don't know if the fan turns on much because i don't even notice it.
The DVD boot is a pretty sexy thing and the Linux geek in me appreciates it.
I had some questions before and after the purchase and they were all resolved either by a technician or in the forums. They didn't freak out when I told them I was putting Linux on it, which I would say is indicative of a support organization that is not looking to pass the buck.
The keyboard is my favorite that I have used.
I'm giving it a 9, but I can't honestly tell you why I wouldn't give it a ten. This thing is pretty much perfect. It's one of those times when you just figure they had a really good group of engineers and product planning people working on the same product. Way to go HP.

Pros: Great widescreen, nice WiFi, DVD+R works great, handy digital multi-reader....and so on, and so forth!
Cons: Lacks bluetooth!!!
If you're thinking about using it for work...no worries, just a few tweaks and your good to go. I got rid of the MS Works that comes preinstalled, and installed MS Office 2003 instead, got a USB Bluetooth adaptor, the expansion base with the wireless keyboard and mouse, and that's about it.
All in all, a solid purchase.

Just like a drummer in Spinal Tap
Pros: Pleasant customer support; good return policy
Cons: Both were needed
The DV 1000 arrived without Bluetooth working. An uninformed CSR said the machine was miss-assembled and Fed Exed a new WiFi card to install. When it arrived I called support only to find the card that was sent was not user-installable and what was needed was a driver. After 2 more hours of Muzak and intermittent instructions, Bluetooth worked well, just like the rest of the machine. In fact while it worked my only complaint was that at some viewing angles the screen portrayed the negative of the image.
A few days following the Bluetooth debacle the machine spontaneously combusted. A high pitched pop and everything went dark. Nothing could bring it back to life.
Despite the good nature and customer concern consistently shown by HP?s customer service, I decided to take the return and refund in the three days I had left to do so.
I may have had the only lemon. Maybe your luck will be different. If you do decide to buy one, HP Shopping.com treated me well and do consider the enhanced return plan; given my experience, you?ll need it.

My Research Paid Off - Great Purchase!! Things I Didn't Learn from Other Reviews
Pros: Virtually silent, Quick Play feature is great, Touchpad on/off button
Cons: Touchpad is not centered, some buttons get finger prints
1. this machine is virtually silent every once in a while I hear the hard drive spinning but that may be because I got the faster spinning (5400 rpm) 80G drive. My Dell from day one made a good bit of noise just from being on.
2. the touchpad on/off button is a blessing! I always plug in my trusty mouse plus the way I type means the lower part of my thumbs are always dragging across the touchpad. No more opening up dialog boxes and trying to disable the component!
3. HP customer service is a revelation. I haven't called for tech support strictly speaking, but the two times I called about my order and to ask some questions not answered by the website I had zero wait time and the phone was answered by people who seemed to be American and who were thoroughly knowledgeable about the product. I never had this kind of experience with Dell.
4. I feel like I bought a computer and got a DVD/CD player for free. The Quick Play feature (especially with the optional remote that fits into the slot on the left side) allows you to hit one button and instantly play a DVD or CD without booting up the computer. Considering personal DVD players avg. $200-250 this is a great feature.
5. One thing I learned from customer service that wasn't evident at the HP Shopping site is that when you select the Extra 12 cell Lithium Ion Battery they upgrade the original battery from 6 cell to 12 cell. So for an extra $99 I've got hours and hours of battery time. The battery life is great too.
6. Curb appeal. She is a pretty little thing and when she's open people stare. Okay this is not a reason to buy a notebook, but it doesn't hurt!
I gotta go play with my new baby, but if I note any flaws I'll post again.

As promised here is my follow-up. I've had the computer 1 month. Purchased a Targus neoprene notebook case (sleeve) from Office Depot. Much lighter, thinner, and softer than the big a** case I used to carry my Dell in. No velcro needed, easy to get machine in and out at airport security.
BATTERY LIFE: Awesome! The 12 cell lithium ion battery gives 6 hours of use. Having 2 of them means I can go a full day of classes and commuting without plugging in. Also the 12 cell makes the back of computer sit up about 3/4 " which allows for good air circulation and a better viewing angle. I used to use a CoolPad notebook thingy for this porpose, but now I don't need it.
Wi-Fi: The antennae (built into the top of the screen when open) works well. You just have to remember to press the "wireless" button on the keyboard and you will automatically connect to any unsecured network (unless you change the settings). While traveling in Denver I desperately needed to get a phone number from an email. I pulled out the computer put it on the driver's seat of my rental and clicked "refresh" to update the available network list when I came to red lights. In a few minutes I came upon someone's network, pulled over, logged onto my email, and retrieved my phone number (I didn't have time to find a Starbucks with an open network).
CUSTOMER SERVICE: I accidentally put the notebook in my case with the ac adapter plugged into the back--not good. After all of the juggling on the plane and in the airport when I got home the plug part was broken. I called customer service and got through quickly to someone who seemed to be in India. A new adapter is $49.99 but mine was free because of the warranty. I was concerned that my battery would die before the replacement arrived and I had mad work to do, but not to worry. The plug came by FedEx from CA to DC the very next day. I was a little frustrated because the CS guy kept saying within 3 days for delivery. When I called back hours later to inquire about expedited delivery another CS guy (also Indian) assured me that it would arrive in 1 day 2 max. Overall I was very pleased with the service.
SCREEN/MOVIE VIEWING: My dad has a big a** tv, but no DVD player so we put my computer in from of the TV in the alcove above the fireplace and using the optional remote and the QuickPlay feature we watched Ocean's 12 sitting several feet away (the same positions they use to watch the big TV). The sound was great and the picture was perfect once we adjusted the screen tilt down a bit to accomodate our lower positions. The picture was good as long as you didn't sit too far to the side of the screen (not the widest viewing angle). We enjoyed the movie and I can now justify buying the optional remote.
I would buy this machine all over agin. LOVE IT!

Entertainment to Go
Pros: Compact for its Screen Size. Very Portable. Fantastic Bright View Screen. Nice Sound. Its a real Looker!! Very Stylish, would give the ibook a run for its money!
Cons: No TV Tuner Card
THe optional volume control headphones are pathetic. A waste of money and i got 2 of those.
Only wish it had a tv tuner card.
Movies look awesome and the sound is crystal clear.
The laptop is a real LOOKER!! Very Very Stylish!!!
Quality is farily decent, although mine came with a neon green spec on the screen. HP says they will replace it but it would take a month before i can get another laptop. A real pain in the butt! So guess i would have to live with it.
The laptop plays games like NFS Underground 2, fairly well in the lower resolution mode. GTA Vice City plays well too. The Integerated Graphics are fairly decent and plays the above mentioned games well.
The wireless picks up signals much better than my Dell 8600 laptop as it as 2 antenneas at the top corners of the screen.
The customer service is also pretty good.
I would defnitely recommend this laptop.

great entertainment laptop
Pros: screen aspect, firm keyboard, HP support
Cons: narrow screen viewing angle, limited video subsystem
I liked the wide screen aspect, which was one of the things that drew me to it. With the 14" wide screen, you get a lot more screen than you do with a traditional 14.1" 4/3 screen. The screen was crisp and contrast-rich. However, the viewing angle is surprisingly narrow. When my g/f and I watched a DVD on the thing, the two of us had to sit immediately beside one another to watch it - otherwise one of us would have a dark or washed-out view. Also, the extra screen size adds a bit of weight to the thing, though I found it reasonable for my daily commute.
I was pleased with overall design - it's a nice looking laptop. The various buttons for volume, wireless, etc are well placed and live up to the overall usability and build quality.
The keyboard is good to the touch, with enough key travel and no keyboard flex or sag/bouncing.
I found that the video subsystem (no dedicated video RAM) made using even MS Office tools a bit slower than I liked. I'm not sure why HP wouldn't add dedicated RAM, given the screen's size and richness.
I had reason to call HP's technical support, which (in Canada) was excellent. They were able to resolve the problem immediately, and referred me to the on-board backup/restore facility.

Pros: This Entertainment Notebook PC is much better than I expected. It's DVD and Music abilities is really cool, and it's keyboard setup is like having your very own Entertainment control. The widescreen is very nice to have, and somehow HP was able to fit all
Cons: I thought the remote control came with it. My dv1000 didn't come with it, and that's what I was mainly disappointed by. It seems that other people have it. Where did you get the remote from, did you get it come with it or did you buy it separately from so

Good, cost-effective laptop
Pros: Have had this for a while. I went with the P-M1.8 and the 7200rpm hard drive. Computer is very attractive and feels well built. Very snappy response, about as good as my desktop athlon XP2500 with 512 MB RAM. Wireless is GREAT even through several floors(
Cons: For someone migrating from a desktop to a laptop, the widescreeen may take a bit of getting use to and the native resolution may be difficult for some to view docs even at XGA (I don't recommend SXGA and up unless you REALLY need it). The smokey plastic Q

HP Support is the worst
Pros: I have nothing good to say since I can't get it fixed.
Cons: HP support has supposedly scheduled 3 Fedex pickups. I have sat around for 3 days waiting to no avail. They gave me the info to take it to Fedex. On not one, but TWO seperate occasions they provided me with an invalid account number. I have been onlin

Excellent for price & Great Customer Serivce
Pros: Light weight, good bright screen, Good battery life (more than 6hrs with 12 cell), very good cusotmer support, good speakers (I have a Dell before), handy remote especially while travelling and on the top above average performance
Cons: Nothing as such. I am not a game freek so Intel integrated graphic card is good enough for me but I would love to have a dedicated video ram.

Nearly a Perfect Business Class Notebook!
Pros: Perfect size and good weight for a true travel notebook. Most units units that are more powerful, YES! but no battery life and are way too heavy and big. You really can't do much travel with them. Might as well lug your desktop it would be the same weight
Cons: Not many, except I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A VIDEO CARD THAT DID NOT SHARE MEMORY WITH THE SYSTEMS RAM. Also a media center version would be nice.

Best value and Outstanding Customer Service
Pros: Just purchased one online a week ago. Really good value with all the necessary options you'd ever look for in a notebook. Noticed a few days ago they have newer options like DVD+RW, brightview, etc. Called HP to have it changed and they were very very hel
Cons: Video card is Intel so not too powerful on that side. They should've added an option for dedicated memory. Although I'm not a heavy gamer so it would be ok. I'll leave the intense graphics gaming part to my desktop instead.
