2nd HP in 2 years just died! JUNK

Pros: stylish look

Cons: The mother board to my first hp fried. They replaced it only to have the new computers harddrive to hey fixed it. Now the warranty is expired and the piece of crap is having serious issues with the hard drive. curser jumps all over too.. annoying.

Review: Piece of JUNK

Overpriced and Unreliable

Pros: Upgrade to the nice screen. Worth every penny. Nice display. LOVE the harman/kardon speakers. Wish my mac had these...

Cons: Like a brick. Loud. Hot. Fragile plastic housing, cracked.

Review: After 3 years, it overheats so easily. For a 1800$+ machine, this should not happen. Now, every time I power it up, I get a black screen of deathly colons. 2 words: HP Sucks. Never again. I went with a mac...

Great..... when it works

Pros: Wide screen, fast

Cons: have had it in the repair shop more than at home. Jack is weakest link in this model. HP should fix this problem for cost. Repairing this laptop has cost me more than just $, its eaten up months of my time.

Review: Fails to maintain or fulfill basic operating expectations. Have a backup computer handy if you get a zd7000.

Customer service is terrible

Pros: none worth mentioning

Cons: customer service sucks.

Review: Their customer service sucks so bad it really doesn't matter how good or bad their product is. Ive had so many bad experiences with HP i wouldn't reccomend them to anyone.

Goodbye HP Thanks for nothing!

Pros: The first week

Cons: The following weeks which turned into years.

Review: Well, where to start. Bought a ZD7000 in 2004. Went to shop due to power plug problems in 2005. Graphics started going out in 2005. Lines due to the overheating problem that they "don't have". Called them. They said out of warranty...sorry. 2005 bought a DELL. ZD7000 became a paperweight. Got lawsuit papers in 2007 for the ZD7000 class action due to the overheating problem that they "don't have".

Fixed after settlement in 6-2008. Became ZD7000A. 8-11-2008.... graphics problem again. The line thing again. Called HP to get hung up on. I was nice. DELL still going strong. Goodbye HP.

I will never buy anything even remotely associated with you, nor will I ever have anything good to say about your shoddy products. Good riddance. Nothing more to say.

Bad Computers worse customer service

Pros: Breaks the first month and you have to buy the parts to fix it

Cons: Breaks the first month

Review: I bought an HP had it less than one month and the hard drive took a dive. Well, figured this would be an easy fix just call customer service and they would stand behind their product, no problem. Well, I spoke with 4 customer service reps they all sound like broken records, all they want is access to your credit card. now, correct me if I am wrong a brand new laptop with HP on the lid less than ONE MONTH old, why do I need to buy a new hard drive? I would suggest you buy another product and skip buying an HP if you expect to get customer service. We asked for over an hour to be connected with a supervisor and they did nothing buy say there was no supervisor on duty, now I don't believe that and I don't think I am alone. secondly, they get tired of talking to you and blind transfer you from rep to rep. Needless to say our brand new laptop is still broken.

it was good for how big it was

Pros: big screen and showing it off you were the big boy in the block

Cons: poor batt but with a big unit what do you expect

Review: it was great held all my info that i need and it sat on my desk like a desk top

This product isnt as good as they say

Pros: compared to the cons there is no pros

Cons: Mother board keeps frying out, ive even replaced twice and still fries

Review: This product is a low quality machine, when i called the hp headquarters for answers of why my motherboard is frying out so that i may fix the problems. They would not share the information nor send certain specs so that i may find the problem myself. To many problems for the price.

it broke once a year!! F-

Pros: did run fast and amazing screen

Cons: heavy, short batt life, terrible customer support

Review: Absolutely not worth it. ran So hot that you could burn your hand on it. at the end of my 1 year warranty, heat sink broke and HP made me pay for it $160. I was fine with that. Always had to prop up the laptop.

the only good thing about the laptop was the screen but not worth it for the trouble that comes along with it!

now ~15 months after i had the heat sink fixed, it breaks again! I know at least 5 people in my grad school with this computer having heat problems as well. This time it broke the system board and now i have a damn paper weight that will cost $550 to fix

Nice Unit but not Reliable Enough for the Price

Pros: Big Display, Big HDD at the time, DVD burner

Cons: DVD Drive wears out yearly, Overheats Regularly

Review: I had a Gateway model similar to this one for 6 months. It was a dog from the get go so I returned it to Sam's Club for a full rebate and bought the ZD7429CL for mo' money.
It was fine other than the blistering heat and intermittant overheating shutdowns, until the end of the first year when the DVD drive started failing. I sent in for warranty service and asked to have the display replaced too as it was getting dark spots all over it. After 2 weeks I get back a display that was worse than the original problem. This one has a 1/4" of horizontal scan lines along the bottom edge.
Back again for 2 more weeks but it did get repaired. This all took 1 month instead of the 2 to 5 advertised days, not including the ship time which takes it out to 2 weeks for any repair. So I wisely paid for the second years warranty. The second year was same as the first, hot and intermittant shutdowns and the DVD drive started failing again. I ran with the drive using slow speed, 2.4X, since a new drive would only last a year and take about 2 weeks to get replaced. Then I very wisely bought the 3rd year of the warranty. Left the unit on one night compiling a dvd and I woke up to a house full of a familiar odor. It was the smell of electronic death. This P.O.S. cooked and could have stated a fire. Turns out the power jack burned off the MB. I have had them failure by fracturing and falling apart but this one burned the pcb and melted the solder off the connections. So now you all know how hot these notebooks can get.

Now the fun part. I call for service on 7/1/07. I am told to wait for a call back from a case manager. No call after 24 hours so I call again and was told to wait at least 48 hours for a return call. No way, the squeaky wheel gets greased and I finally got someone to send me the FED X box to return it for repair. It's got to be fixed eventually so why make me wait to send it in for repair? 7/4/07 the box is on my steps and I send it back out at Kinkos FED X depot.
On 7/13/07 I finally get a call from the case manager, 2 weeks after the initial call.
He and no one I talked to for the past two days can tell me what is taking so long to repair on the notebook. 2 to 5 days was 2 weeks ago. Finally on 7/20/07 the case manager calls back and told me the reason for the delay was I need a new MB and they are out of stock until 8/07. So now I am looking at well over a month with no notebook and losing warranty coverage every day.

God Bless America, they agreed to replace my unit with a new DV9500 running Vista. If this is supposed to be good news then read on because nothing is free in this world. I get the new DV9500 on 7/30/07. It does not work with my Lexmark X83 MFP which is like new. None of my old dvd authoring software works with it. It is not a very fast OS even with 2 gig of ram and dual 2 gig cpu. So yes it was nice of them to owe up to their warranty policy and replace the unit but it still left me spending extra money I was not prepared to just to print my resume to find a new job.

So yes HP has some issues and then again so don't all manufactures of anything high tech and electronic. My advice is to look at the cost of the warranty against the purchase price of the unit. If you spend $2K and the warranty is $239 for the exta 2 years it is not a bad deal.

Lessons learned for sure

Pros: Full numeric keypad

Cons: 4th time with Geek Squad (ext. warranty @ Best Buy)

Review: A week ago, dropped off the zd7000 for the 4th time to Geek Squad (I bought this 3 months after release date along with BB's 3 yr ext warranty thank goodness - I hate those things but...). Was curious to see what CNET reviewers had to say...okay, I probably would have agreed at time of purchase and for about 1 year. Then saw readers' recent reviews - I have the exact same issues.

First time, they replaced the mobo. Second, they replaced the nvidia card (Geek Squad tried to convince me that it was an operating system issue - HA). Third time they replaced the screen (vertical line issue) with a refurbished one (slightly diff model). This last time, vertical lines reappeared (so I'm guessing it's not a screen issue?).

Yes, it runs hot as hell and about that loud - good way to keep coffee warm in mornings tho.

For those who had no problems and give this a high rating - you are defintely the lucky ones.

What did I learn? (1) Don't buy loud/hot laptops. (2) Took about 6 months since product release for user ratings to plummet from 8-9s ("NEVER USE YOUR DESKTOP AGAIN") to 4-6's. BTW, pcmag gave this thing a 5/5. (3) Bleeding edge laptops should be purchased with extended warranties.

I'm hoping BB will give me full credit under their "no lemon" policy. I will try to replace with a desktop - I can do some parts swapping myself in case similar things happen. Also, new games in past year weren't playable.

Are any ZD7000's still working?

Pros: Out-performs most 1000W fan heaters

Cons: HOW HAS HP GOTTEN AWAY WITH THIS ONE??

Review: I wrote a positive review once, my one has only needed two new motherboards in 3yrs so I guess I'm lucky.

Amazing desktop replacement for three years running

Pros: Fast, big screen, great sound, numeric keypad, all necessary ports

Cons: Heavy, low battery life

Review: I bought this computer to replace my desktop computer, and I have not been disappointed. Although I have drooled over lighter notebooks with longer battery life, that is neither the function nor design of this laptop. This computer does more than my old desktop ever did, and I have taken it to class, to work, on trips and more. The power supply must tag along because you can almost never count on the battery to last more than an hour. So, with the AC adapter and carrying case, you're looking at 10-12 pounds, and that's a lot of weight. The keyboard rocks (I've had a sticky 'P' key from time to time), but I particularly love the full numeric keypad. The large screen is ideal for desktop publishing, multitasking or watching movies on the on-board DVD player. When I watch with a friend, they are usually expecting tinny laptop speaker quality and are surprised at the fullness of the Harman/Kardon speakers. I've never had to have the computer serviced. The only real problem I've had is with the power supply, which I thoroughly abused and was able to replace cheaply.

didn't work out well for me

Pros: nice screen

Have loved and hated but HP finally fixed

Pros: great screen, good all around speed and use

Cons: video card was apparently screwing up entire system for years

Review: Had prob. with just quiting and not restarting no matter what I did. Service was no help and under warrenty it went in twice and they replaced system board and other stuff.
In Dec 2006 out of warrenty it did it again and I ******* loud and long to Serv.Rep's and they finally took computer at no charge and replaced Video board frm Nvidia to ATI and gave me a new hard drive and system board and changed the name of the computer to pavillion zd7000A, It seems to be a new computer but they deleted any way to get their service dept. by internet and sort of have disowned me as far as future help is concerned. I would tend to think they had a problem series wide and fixed it to keep us from decrying their product. Golly bless em. I have a good running computer but I fear if anything goes wrong they will disown me.
Generally, for the 21/2 to 3 years I have owned it, the zd7000 has been fantastic and during most of that time HP service was outstanding.

Unreliable

Pros: Good tech support; too bad I had to use it so much; very heavy

Cons: Poor hardware reliability; wireless doesn't work; laptop shuts down without warning

Review: I purchased this computer 3 years ago because the high reviews from CNET. I also liked the fact I could disable the mouse pad with the touch of a button; very useful for straying thumbs when typing.

I also liked the looks and wide screen. However, after a couple months use, the screen quick working. I sent the laptop back to HP and they responded very quickly (I bought the express repair support, so of course I paid for the quick response). I got the laptop back within 2 weeks, but the screen still didn't work. Had to send it back. The laptop came back about 2 weeks later, but this time there was a thin red line running the full height of the screen. Very annoying. For $2000 I expected/demanded more, so back the laptop went.

I guess the third time was the charm, since HP finally fixed the problems with the screen.

After about 18 months, I bought a wireless router for use in my home. The laptop would not, however, synch up with the wireless network (the ethernet connection was fine). I took the laptop to a Starbucks to see if I could get the wireless to work there, but no luck. Coincidentally, I had to travel to Virginia and took my laptop there; the hotel offered free wireless, but my laptop had at best very poor network connections. I contacted the HP tech support. They were very friendly, but the tech rep kept insisting I troubleshoot the ether connection even though I repeated several times that one worked fine. I reloaded the drivers for the onboard wireless NIC, but that didn't help. I finally gave up on getting the wireless to work.

The other problem with this laptop started occurring about 2 years after I bought it (and conveniently after the extended warranty expired). The laptop occasionally will shutdown without warning. I contacted HP, and they were again very friendly. They suggested I uninstall the Microsoft ACPI controller and reinstall it. That didn't work. At that point they were without any alternatives.

I did have the option of sending the laptop in for repairs, but by this point the warranty had expired. I wasn't going to drop more money on repairing this laptop.

Overall, I'd give HP very good marks for their customer service; they were very friendly and helpful on most occasions. However, there is no excuse for having to rely on their customer support so frequently. When I pay $2000 for a laptop, I'd prefer never to need the customer support.

I like the looks of HP products, but gads their reliability left too much to be desired.

Worked just fine for YEARS!

Pros: Fast desktop replacement.

Cons: Gets pretty hot!

Review: We bought this computer when it first came out, 3? years ago. My wife used it every single day, took it to Disneyworld a few times, never had an unusual problem. Please note: YOU HAVE TO BLOW IT OUT from time to time. It sucks LOTS of air through it, that sucks in lots of dust. It gets clogged with dust. When the fan comes on high, it is time to blow it out! I think HP probably jumped the gun with this computer, it really has a desktop processor which needs more cooling than practical in a laptop. ANYWAY, we are happy with it.

User Rating: 3/10

wonderful, then abysmal :~(

Pros: Great monitor, fast

Cons: hot. internal meltdown, NO SERVICE

Review: What a piece of junk. DO NOT BUY HP LAPTOPS!
This computer worked just perfectly for the first 12 months, then burned out during a movie. The power supply connector had overheated and disconnected itself. An offer of a new motherboard ($850+labor) was no joy, so i reattached myself, but the repair only lasted 6 months.
I'm so sick of high priced technology with one year life expectancy. Add this to the junk pile with my $400 ipod!

Watchout! It's a lemon !

Pros: nice screen; good connectivity

Cons: MAJOR documented hardware problems (motherboard, video card); poor paint quality.

Review: This is the worst computer I have ever owned (among dozens). Hundreds of people have had (and are having) huge problems with this computer: sudden losses of power, irreparable video card failures... units repaired by HP often come back unfixed, as if problems were design-related. I know because I am one of the unfortunate fellows who are stuck with such a pathetic computer: I had it fixed once when it was still under waranty for a power loss problem (the computer would all of a sudden lose power), and it came back, still doing it. Besides, I now have a new problem with the display where some yellow vertical lines appear.

As problems with this computer appear so pervasive (check out internet forums if you doubt it; complaints range in the hundreds), I am not sure why a class action has not been initiated against HP...

Note also that the metallic paint used to cover the touchpad is of poor quality. After using the computer daily for about a month, it started coming off.

For $1,500 plus, this computer is a total rip-off.

HP, this is the very last computer I will ever buy from you.

my opinion about Pavilion dv6140ea

Pros: functionality

Cons: secret defect?

Review: Some time ago I bought Pavilion dv6140ea and it was great: functional, lots of adds, nice in touch :) Unfortunately after a week it started squeaking, shrieking etc while inactive. Actually it's giving out this funny and irritating sound even now... :( The sound goes through your brain like child's scream... I gave it to the HP service but it wasn't fixed. They sent it back "untouched" after one day... A man from HP service said that this is its affliction :| I advise you to choose sth else than HP PAVILION.

RUNS HOT,SHORT BATTERY LIFE,FRIES VIDEO CARDS

Pros: lightning quick, as good as any desktop out there

Cons: RUNS HOT,SHORT BATTERY LIFE,FRIES VIDEO CARDS

Review: i purchased one of these with all of the bells and whistles...1GB RAM, 3GB P4 processor, true black 17" monitor,128 bit video card, etc etc. ...and it was awesome! for about 3 weeks at a time, that is. Thank God i also purchased the 3 year warranty, otherwise i wouldnt be typing this review right now. the problem with this unit is its power converter and video processor. the power converter gets so hot, it will almost burn you. i tried propping the pc up off of the table to allow more air to the fans, and it helped some. but then there was the vid card issue. 3 times in a row, the same problem occurred- the video processor gets fried one way, or another. after some time of having this replaced, HP eventually ran out of them and had them on back order. well, i complained and complained, and complained... after about a month of ******** at HP's warranty department, they finally said "we wont be getting any more video processors for the 7000 series notebooks, so we will provide you with a replacement." HALLELUJAH!!! another thing, be sure your case manager isn't a guy from Canada, he is an absolute horse's ass! So, I am now the happy owner of a DV8000 with all the bells and whistles and I LOVE IT!!! if you are thinking about buying a zd7000, just plain dont do it. and if you DO get one, buy the HP warranty with it, so you can get a good replacement like I did :)

good luck!

Most versatile desktop replacement I've owned.

Pros: Keyboard w/number pad, wide screen, lots of options

Cons: Power hog (expected) and poorly designed cooling system

Review: Had the zd7040US for approx. 20 months now. Only thing I had to do was replace the battery, which was included in my extended support agreement. Now, I'm noticing that the fans are starting to make noise, so I'll have them replaced (still under extended warranty).

Users expecting a laptop will be disappointed, primarily because of design, not quality issues. Tried to use it on a plane once... I think it was wider than the food tray. :)

I'm a software consultant, so this laptop is on for 10+ hours per day... 6 days/week. It's my workhorse and I'd buy it again.

A ripoff for repairs

Pros: A nice desktop replacement

Cons: Must buy warranty without fail annually

Review: This unit will burnout a mobo or graphics card annually and without a repair warranty or the skills and determination to go after HP you will be buying this notebook over and over in the cost of repairs.

Full featured and utterly unreliable.

Pros: Great features

Cons: Utterly unreliable

Review: This machine has all the bells and whistles and seemed like a perfect desktop replacement. I actually bought it on the basis of PC Magazine's and CNET's reviews.

What a mistake. It just isn't reliable. It has been out of service for seven of the 30 months I have had the machine. It has gone through two system boards and been replaced. The replacement has gone through another two. I am fully expecting it to crash again. It runs too hot; needs to be elevated; needs a fan underneath; and needs to be in an airconditioned room. Even then it crashes. Worse - HP does'nt seem to recognize its design failure although if you talk to enough service people they will tell you you that HP never should have put a P4 chip in the machine or put on such a powerful screen. They draw too much power and eventually the board burns out, with usual system being vieo which neds several boots to come on and finally doesn't come on at all.

Last month, I asked HP to replace the machine with the newer model with the cooler intel duo core chip and was willing to contribute financially to a new one. They doggedled refuse and keep on repairing. The service people tried hard, but they were biund by their own rules. A machine has to fail at least three times before HP will replace it. Obviously from other's reviews they produced a lemon and won't admit it. So I bought a Dell 9400. It's just fine.

A product with a lot of potential that was a real disappointment!

Pros: Wide screen, good help desk support - a product with unlimited potential but HP missed their opportunity. I would NEVER purchase an HP product (nor recommend one) again!

Cons: Runs hot! Runs hot!! Runs hot!!! Short battery life. Heavy

Review: The HP zd7000 was my first experience with an HP product. I chose HP (over ALL of the competition) due to my perception of their commitment to quality. Unfortunately, I would never buy nor recommend an HP product to any one. The system costs more than $3k when I purchased it and in retrospect, it is HIGHLY over priced for what you actually get.

I must ad, however, that the HP help desk is VERY good. Better than most. My only recommendation here is that HP needs to extend the hours for US-domestic help desk support. Having to call India, for example, for routine questions (which they answer VERY WELL, I might add), I think sends the wrong message to customers.

Run Away as fast as you can

Pros: I can be thrown in the garbage

Cons: The worst computer EVER

Review: I bought this hunk o' junk about 1 1/2 years ago. At first, it ran OK, not anymore.

It turns off when you least expect it, used to be with Photoshop, now, it's all the time.
Bogs down, freezes.
The power cord port is shorting out.
The battery does not last anymore.
Even with 1 gig of memory, cannot run more than 4 programs without serious problems.
Runs SUPER hot.

DO NOT PURCHASE. RUN AWAY~!

User Rating: 2/10

Eh...not that great.

Pros: Big screen...

Cons: Heavy and very impractical

Review: The reason some people prefer notebooks instead of PC's is because notebooks can be carried around and still funtion by means of the battery. I've always had problems with this computer and I had to send it to HP several times. Furthermore, I had a replacement and that didn't blow over well. The charging system is very fragile, and so it kept on breaking multiple times. The charger faultered and I had to replace that more than twice. After HP was no help at all, I decided to take my business elsewhere and get it replaced there from now on. It's very heavy, and very unstable; I would not recommend this system for those who consider themselves 'clumsy'. If you have your eyes set on this computer, I'd recommend just getting a PC.

User Rating: 3/10

beautiful but very unreliable

Pros: huge screen

Cons: very reliability

Review: I've had this laptop for a little more than a year. I've had to replace the hard disk already (just about a year after purchase). Now the video board has died on it

User Rating: 8/10

When its bad, its bad

Pros: portable, good screen

Cons: customer service, battery life

Review: got this computer for graphics power and portability. Thats where the fun ended. computer died 3 times, twice in one month. All were issues with mother board. Don't buy the ZD7000 , Read why

Pros: large screen, thats about it

Cons: Overheats - overheats and oh yeah, overheats

Review: Machine has been in and out of repair since new. Three lost hard drives - overheats like an oven , and runs really slow. Fan noise is very loud. First time I've ever taken the time to diss a product but thought I owed it to other users to tell them about this bad product. HP will not replace with a new product - keep insisting that I resend it in for repair. Then I have to reload software, databases etc. I'm on hold with HP tech support right now actually. If you buy this computer and experience similar problems (which you will) you have nobody to blame but yourself. I am not a disgruntled former employee or anything like that - just a consumer (and graphic designer) who uses computers all day long and thought I'd share my experiences with you. If I wasn't on hold right now with HP I wouldn't even bother to take the time to write this review. Like you - I "usually" have way better things to do.

Unreliable!

Pros: nice big screen, nice sound

Cons: power issues, motherboard issues, etc., etc,

Review: First, power issues where the fix was to set the power usage settings to max regardless of whether on battery. Second, actual power supply socket in computer cracked - portables should be more rugged. Third, the machine started shutting down randomly, and it's sitting with HP support, who after misrepresenting the process and charging us $300, promised it back to us 6 days ago; we still don't have it.

Great desktop replacement

Pros: It is a powerful beast with a gorgeous screen

Cons: It's heavy, runs hot unless you correct it, and its battery life is short

Review: I really love this machine. Yes, it is a beast to carry around but I sure as hell love it as my main computer. It is powerful, Photoshopping on this machine is a breeze, or any high intensity program (like some of the bioinformatic software still in beta out there).

When its a 17inch, you wish it would be a little lighter, but what do you honestly expect? It does run hot, which a lot of users complain about it, but there are easy ways to correct this. When I first got this machine, I didn't have a desk to put it on, so I used to put it on my coffee table. However, I used to put in on the table so that 1/4 of it was actually off the table -- particularly where the fans are...it never got warm. When I got a desk again, I refused to pay 30 dollars for a coolpad so I just put some erasers underneath the notebook accomplishing the coolpad's result. Never gets hot.

I just wish the battery lasted longer. I know its powering a 17 inch GORGEOUS monitor but honestly...we have the technology!

Sent back twice for repairs within 6 months

Pros: Fast, good price, beautiful screen (when it works)

Cons: not reliable

Review: When it works, it?s a great laptop. The screen is beautiful and the price was great. I couldn't find a comparable machine from any other manufacturer that was close to the price we paid for this. Maybe there's a reason for that. Currently, its back at HP for the second time in less than 6 months. First, the video card went dead. Now, the display is dead. I'm seriously considering buying a upgrade to the 1-year warrantee because I no longer trust this machine to continue working. I don't want to give HP any more of my money, but at this point I feel it would be safer to get an extended warrantee than to trust this machine to continue working past the current warrantee.

8.0 with reservations

Pros: Excellent Portable Desktop Replacement with DL516a

Cons: Weight,Noise, Battery Life, Heat & Fan Ventilation, Bundled Software, Cross-platform/Upgrade Support

Review: I bought the zd7000 about a year and a half ago and tracked it for weeks from China to NJ.
Cons: 1) Fan noise like a desktop 2)Mine overheats and shuts down unless placed left-justified in DL516a. (exposing fans to open air) 3) Wirelss mouse and keyboard are not top-drawer - recommend spending extra bucks for logitech. (Froze up on some apps). You can buy just docking station on EBAY. 4)Had to dig thru the included w2k cdrom and experiment to get it to work under 2000 and 2003. I had to start the Broadcom 54g wltrysvc service after system startup so ended up putting a shortcut on desktop and set service to manual. 5) Touchpad is touchy - Picks up signals from your hands when you are typing - very annoying so turned it off. Old plastic touchpad would have been preferred an my tactile preference. 6) For 2003, had to fake out hp wireless printer setup to make it work, but lost scannning capability - this is really not an issue with this particular notebook, but with hp periperal support policies, not the technicians - they were great! :). 7) Unrealistically short battery life. 8) A bit of a heavy-weight and not chic for your chic - definitely minus points there for you in the long term - and extra pc maintenance for you unless you want to be the hero-type. 9) I do not see any way to upgrade video, which is my pet peeve about notebooks and sucks you in for the next upgrade.
Pros: 1) Runs Doom3 decent, not great, at 800x600 with high resolution using 128 meg video. 2)Fast even with 512Meg. 3) 17" screen is very, very nice. 4) Best price I could find from a well-known and reputable outfit 5)Service manuals can be bought off EBAY and are well written for assembly/disassembly. 6) Worked well with my linksys 54g cable router and was able to WEP and ip filter it with no problem, but stay away from 2.4 GHZ phones that blow you off the net - my mistake for listening to the sales guy who sold me a plantronics belt-clip phone.
SUMMARY: I bought this as a desktop replacement, portable and easy to move around and I got it to run dual-boot xp/w2k3 so, overall, I'm a happy camper, but this PC is definitely not for the guy or gal on-the-go or the pool-side surfer/cruiser. This is also not for the reclining couch potato or bedside office set unless you desire a lap warmer with an extension cord so my rating of 8 is reserved only for a wireless desktop replacement device, only.

Terrible design and quality control

Pros: Great screen

Cons: Cooling problems, unreliable, can't use on lap

Review: Without doubt this is the worst computer I have ever purchased, both in terms of design and reliability.

It requires a huge amount of power, which results in terrible battery life (about an hour on a full charge) and major cooling problems. Both because of the heat and the fact that the fan vents are placed on the bottom of the machine you cannot use it on a lap. Even when it is placed on a table, the vents are still partially obstructed, and this causes my unit to overheat and sometimes crash. The only way it can be used is with the corners propped up to give it a clearance underneath.

So far I have had to return the unit for service three times, and a fourth service order is in place. The first time was a loose wire on the speakers, causing crackle. It came out of the box with that. The second time was a hard disk failure, which lost all my data since the last backup. The third time was a failure of the power connector where the power supply plugs in. When this one was repaired, HP also reformatted my hard disk, losing all my data again. Of course, I was unable to take a backup before I sent it in because I could not charge the battery or plug in the power supply.

Now the power connector has gone again. At least I noticed it happening in time to take a backup this time....

Oh, yeah, and the touchpad is placed for left handed people. Arghhhh. I'm never buying HP again.

Hot, Hot, Hot

Pros: Big Screen

Cons: Slow, Hot and Heavy

Review: Too hot to run fast, this computer is the fat kid having a heart attack keeping up with the rest of the class. The motherboard on mine fried twice. The first time, it fried under warranty, within the first year. HP gladly replaced it and asked if would need to upgrade the warranty. I said, "Naw, I noticed it had been running hot. This probably fixed the problem with that particular motherboard." Less than a year later, I'm without a computer. HP won't fix it for less than $700. Probably a power surge problem, the CSR concluded (after much trouble shooting: CSR accused me of lying and ripping the cord out). Bottom of the line centrino based systems are looking good--Dell has one for $500 after rebate. If you buy this computer, plan to keep it in a cold room and GET THE EXTENDED F-ING WARRANTY. Oh yeah, the thing was like 9+ pounds.

SLOW, HEAVY, EXPENSIVE, SHORT BATTERY LIFE

Pros: NICE BIG SCREEN

Cons: SPEED, SMALL HD, SLOW AGP SLOT, HEAVY (9 lbs.), 256MB RAM?!?! BATTERY

Review: I don't understand how CNET editor could shoot down the eMachines M6811 which has EVERYTHING better than this laptop except for a slightly smaller screen and then give a High rating to the HP ZD7000 that has so little. This machine is almost a desktop for weight. HD is only 40GB (80GB on the M6811), AGP is only 4X, Memory is only 256MB (Editor killed eMachines M6811 for having "only" 512, which, btw, is expandable to 1.2GB). Battery life is short. The 6811 now only costs $989 new, do yourself a favor and get one of those.

Major Monitor Issues

Pros: Beautiful laptop, fast, high res screen

Cons: Monitor & graphics card crashed multiple times, heavy and hot

Review: I first reviewed this laptop several months ago and praised its features. Now I am almost regretting buying it. I have sent the laptop into HP twice for the exact same reason. They fixed it the first time, sent it back and within one hour I had the same exact problem: the monitor stopped working, would boot with vertical lines on the screen or I'd get the blue screen of death. They replaced the system board the first time, now they are replacing the SB and the screen. Yea the HP total care package covered the costs, but I have been without work for over two weeks. I believe they have a design flaw: the mother board/graphics card heating up. You have to raise it off of any surface or the thing heats up, not warm but hot. I would seriously read all the reviews on this thing and get the total care service package as you dont want to pay for problems out of pocket. I am not the kind of person who expects perfection out of technology, but 2 fixes, $2,500.00, lots of lost work and others saying they have the same problem - I'll let you figure it out.

Sudden Death Shutdown

Pros: Nice when it works

Cons: Bad Technical support; Overheats when using memory intensive programs

Review: I use this paperweight for multimedia applications. Against better judgement, I opted for this notebook instead of a MAC G5. I'm paying for that decision, which BTW I made from the CNET review, every time I use Photoshop CS or Painter. Tech support is acerebral and every time I call they tell me to either remove the ram and reseat it or call Photoshop.
I found a useful link, http://www.zd7000forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3029&start=30, that addresses this issue. Bottom line, the MB needs to be replaced due to an issue with the "north Bridge" on the system board. HP support are exotic dullards. Do NOT purchase this system.

Nice Desktop replacement however there are major cooling problems

Pros: Nice Display, Quick Response

Cons: Cooling problems and short battery life, Must upgrade RAM to get expected performance.

Review: I have been using the 7030 for several months now as a primary pc. I love the features however some painful drawbacks. The docking station is usless, it collects dust in the corner. Puts the monitor too high! A port replicator that used the docking port would have been more helpful. The cooling of the unit is not helpful. I had to put pads on the case becasuse the heat was painful on the wrists after an entire day working. When working with applications the fans really crank and drain the battery. Effective traveling life is about 45 minutes. It is still better then some of the alternatives but the heat issue a serious consideration.

I have had the laptop in for repairs once under war. The turned the laptop around quickly. The power plug stinger is very touchy and often pushes in on this model. Following replacement of the motherboard with a new type i have not had any issues. I do wish they had tech support that spoke enough english to communicate more effectively.

The ONLY REAL desktop replacement out there!

Pros: Very powerful, excellent display, more features than most desktops, over a year old and still top of the line

Cons: Hot and heavy, customer service people are a bit dense (but then again show me a computer company where they aren't)

Review: I have had mine for a little over a year and it has been a great machine. the only problem I ever had with it was with the charger, it burnt out and it was nearly impossible to find a 120W generic power supply until HP got me a replacement one.

This machine does it all and then some. I am an IT manager and it was one of the most powerful machines in the organization and after a year is still the most powerful laptop.

NOTE: ALWAYS get all the mods you want on a laptop when you buy it. Mine is a P4 w/HT 3.2 GHz with 80 GB HDD, 1GB RAM, Harmon Kardon speakers, and DVD+R/RW

This is an extremely well rounded machine It runs all of my Professional CAD, 20/20 Technologies Design, CNC 3D Machine Programming software as well as HalfLife, Doom3, and America's Army Ops, without so much as a Burp. The screen on this monster is something to behold, 17" inches on a laptop!!!! And no flickers no dull spots and absolute DVD performance. Pros: a true workhorse of a notebook

Cons: battery life is weak

Review: BUYER BEWARE

I got this laptop back in november...a couple months later I started noticing a malfunction with the hibernate feature...it would hibernate and wouldn't come out of hibernation until after a cold reboot...

a few days later, it wouldn't come on at all...so I shipped it to HP...they promised it would be delivered within 3-4 business days. Well it's been over two weeks and they STILL haven't shipped it with no reason explaining why. Customer service repeatedly gives me the run around making for a VERY frustrating experience with HP.

Pros: Overall the ZD7000 is one of the best PC's I have ever used but by not making Media Center Edition 2005 upgrades available to those users who have spent around $2500.00 on it, it just forces the model into obsolescence.

Cons: Straight out of the box screen didnt repaint until I went to ctrl+alt+deleted explorer, it still refreshes oddly while in the background. The 15" computer is in the 17" case apparently, so getting the smaller screen to make it semi portable isnt an option

Pros: As a multimedia designer who would be bringing his laptop to client meetings I needed a powerhouse machine. I researched laptops for several months and this system was the clear winner based on reviews, cost-to-hardware comparison, and cost-to-competitor

Cons: I knew what I was getting so it's not a con for me - it's a BIG machine. Some games appear "spread-out" on the wide-angle screen (e.g. Diablo II). Unreal Tournament has the proper video options though, so try it.
