    "Loads of problems"

by GBWorld on April 14, 2005

Pros: Wide screen, great for movies

Cons: Low level of QA on components

Summary: Within a few weeks of getting the product, the hard drive failed. They sent me a new one and I reinstalled everything. A few months later, the screen died and it had to be sent in for fix. It is now a bit older than the warranty and it is dead again. Have not determined the cause ... yet.

I have had Compaq laptops in the past that were fine. It seems quality is no longer job 1 now they are merged.

NOTE: A friend finally sent back the HP version of the X1000 after a horrible sound problem they could not fix, so QA is a problem on the HP side of the aisle, as well.

i agree all the comments stated for this notebook. Video Cards & Hard drive failure.
i went to non-compac service centre for repair, they told me that, they had already repair more than 20units Compac X1000, mainly video card problem. and is costly to repair.
but the good thing is, after changing the vedio card (ATI Radeon 9000) is ok now.
Who knows is the chipset problem or montherboard problem?
i am expecting the hard disk failure coming as well as the speaker phone mulfunction. i don't know, i am very frastruting bacause second hand dealer refuse to buy overthis notebook (no 2nd hand value.)
I think Compac should look in QA problem on this ATI Chip set.

I almost laughed when I read your report. Same thing... the first year of owning it was plagued with hard drive failures (I finally figured out it's a result of where it's placed on the machine). Next, the video card failed. Just recently, the wireless radio stopped working. HP is a pain in the ass to deal with, but they finally decided to buy me out....(unfortunately with HP dollars though).

I would also not recommend this laptop. Ironic that two friends told me in the last month about their video cards going bad (one just a week after 12-month warranty expired, the other three weeks after warranty period), now mine just went two months outside of the warranty period. Coincidence or bad batch of video cards? Laptop itself is decent, except for the constant jumping around of the cursor when using the keypad. Nice screensize and decent weight.
