"Great all in one laptop" on by fiveliters

    Pros: 17"widescreen,removable dual HDs,Blu-Ray player

Cons: Weight, only comes in one color

Summary: This is the first laptop I have purchased new,and I did a bit of research before buying. I liked the idea of having a blu-ray player with it,so I could avoid buying an additional piece of equipment to play the new DVD standard. Having a removable hard drive that can be plugged into another PC via USB is a great feature,as is the 17" widescreen. Keyboard has a nice feel to it, and it has a multi-card reader,so I no longer have to connect my digital camera to it to upload pics. facial recognition software is a cool party trick, and the customizable halo lighting is a nice touch. So far only drawback is weight, though I actually think my old ThinkPad was heavier. All in all,you get a lot of nice features for the money,I think!

    "Very Nice!" on by jdevarie

Pros: 2.5Ghz Peryn Processor. Blue Ray, 2-250GB hard disks, up to 4GB ram. 17" display. Face recognition log in. Windows VISTA Home Premium. HDMI port. ATI card w 256MB ram.

Cons: No DVI graphics port. No parallel port.

Summary: My model although a Y710, differs slightly from that mentioned here. Mine has all the goodies described above. I am mostly a MAC user but know my way very well with Windows and was looking to replace my old G4 Mackbook pros that I have and was considering the 17" MACBOOK pro. Comparing specs between the two it strikes me that they are pretty close. The price difference however made it for me and decided to give the Lenovo a try. So far so good. I am not so sure about the sub-woofer option on this machine, it does not seem to work as intended as it does not sound that impressive. The keys on the keyboard could use some improvement, maybe they could use the thinkpad keys instead. It is nice to have a full number pad on the laptop. The video camera works well as does the face recognition log in. The battery life is decent if you use one of the battery optimizing profiles. Performance seems very good as I am running VMWARE with one Linux one WINDOWSXP Pro and I am trying a solaris 10 virtual Machines. So far the running VMs are working well. There is also a firewire port on this machine. I have not tried it but will do soon. I know for a fact that the new mackbook pros are not that good at editing video so I am curious as to how this windows machine would do.
The computer is heavy but if you see this machine it will be obvious to you that it is. There is no brushed aluminum finish, it is all plastic and the finish on the top of the notebook is a magnet for fingerprints. The screen is beautiful and it has a glossy finish. Again, not a big deal. This machine will do everything you ask of it, just be prepared to cary an 8lb behemoth with you. I like it very much since I can do soooo much with it and can do it anywhere. It also has a blu-ray capabilities so what more can you ask for?

    my $0.02
