Summary: The SL400 isn't the smallest laptop out there, but its 14.1" screen and dimensions of 13.2x9.7x1.3'1.5" (336x247x34'39mm) will still travel pretty easily. We wish they'd made it slightly lighter though, because at 5.5lbs (2.5kg) it's slightly heavier ...

CNET product brief
Description: This configuration of the Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 is a 5.5-pound, consumer level notebook computer.Compared to other mainstream consumer notebooks on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $540.The 14.1 inch widescreen has a native resolution of 1280 x 800, which is fairly standard among laptops.Built around the Intel Core 2 Duo chip. This unit comes with a 80GB hard disk and 1 GB of memory.
Pros: Includes an HDMI port so you can easily output the notebook's audio and video to a compatible TV or monitor.
Cons: Has a modest 1.8 GHz CPU speed. This is not out of line with the product's price, but is slower than the average notebook on the market today. Also, this notebook has only a 80GB hard drive, which is smaller than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the Acer Aspire AS4530-6823, a 5.3-pound notebook at around $500, has a 320GB hard drive. The poor battery performance of this laptop means it has to be recharged more frequently than other laptops in its class.Shared video memory has a negative impact on system performance which may be okay for users with more modest graphics needs.Users with more demanding needs should look to a graphics solution that brings its own muscle.
Suitability: A consumer level notebook, suited for general mobile computing. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Internet from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled notebook.Comes with a DVD player for watching movies. This laptop also has a CD writer, allowing you to compile your own music CDs or video CDs.An anti-theft security tether can be fastened into the built-in lock slot.
Value: Given its very inexpensive price, this notebook has great features for the money. For example, when it comes to screen size, the average price of mainstream consumer products with a comparable screen size is considerably more -- right around $721.Generally, it should be considered by serious bargain hunters.
Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Web more conveniently from any room.(2) Using this PC's Firewire (1394) port, you can connect to many digital camcorders and other equipment to rapidly upload data to the computer hard drive.

Thin-and-light laptop computer
A thin-and-light laptop computer offers the optimal combination of portability, performance, features, and cost. Power-tuned mobile processors deliver enough power to keep you working smoothly, and unlike ultraportables, most thin-and-light laptops have a more reasonably sized keyboard and display, a larger hard drive, and a built-in optical drive. Yes, they're more expensive than slightly larger, heavier mid-size laptops, but if you need maximum productivity in a portable package, this is the best choice.

Student laptop computer
Students and others on a tight budget should look for a cheap laptop computer that delivers the most bang for the buck. In particular, students need a notebook that is small and light enough to lug back and forth across campus but rugged enough to withstand bouncing around in a backpack.

EPEAT Silver compliant notebook computer
EPEAT is a consumer electronics eco-certifier that is fast growing in popularity. Instead of having it's own narrow criteria like Energy Star and RoHS, EPEAT's requisites are comprehensive and include Energy Star and RoHS compliance. For electronics to reach the silver level, they must meet the broad criteria of the bronze level plus an additional 14 a la carte requirements.

Laptop computer memory size
To maximize battery life, notebook computer processors are often designed to save more energy and run cooler than desktop processors. The drawback is slower performance, but more memory can help, which it won't consume energy or radiate heat. Even better, up to 4GB of RAM can now be found in budget configurations. If you want more memory later, expansion is often a simple procedure.
