"Great machine at a fantastic price"4.5 starson by deecee
Pros: Sturdy construction, active protection, speedy performance
Cons: The fixed config came without a DVD-RW drive, would iiked the magnesium case instead
Summary: Fast T7300 C2D Processor on the new Intel Santa Rosa Platform, 36 bit memory chipset means all 4GB of memory will be available with a 64 bit OS. build in firewire. Fingerprint reader is a good security measure with extra convenience. Good size/weight and excellent price from an on-line vendor (way, way below the market price). Sturdy construction. Was a bit concerned with the integrated video card, but the performance is really good. 7200 RPM 100GB HD is blazing fast, the best HD performance from a laptop I have seen. Installed 2GB more of PC5300 RAM and this baby screams. A T-series Thinkpad at this price is truly amazing. Paid a lot more for a T60p a whie ago and this T61 is just as fast and well built.
The built in DVD-CD-RW drive does not write DVD's. But that's what you get for buying a fixed configuration from a retailer instead of custom order it from Lenovo. I paid way more for a T60p with similar spec except for discrete video card and DVD-RW drive and a 15 inch Flexview screen awhile ago. This T61 is just as well built and fast, but also lighter and smaller. I am envious as my wife will be the main user for this system. Have always had great luck with Thinkpads, and the T60p, T61 series continue to impress. Could use a bit more screen resolution, but then the screen will probably be hard to read.
The installed memory module is a single 1GB module, so adding memory is convenient and more economical. 2GB DDR2 PC5300 memory modules are at a really good price from Newegg now. Love the Thinkpad T series.
I don't understand the comment from the CNet reviewer, he compared the T61 with a R61 and complained about slower performance, but then stated the R61 had a T7500 instead of of a T7300 processor. Maybe it's becuase the list price are similar on the R61 with the T7500, I can buy that. But even more strangely, the reviewer complained the T61 with a 2GHz T7300 processor is not faster than a T60p (which is a workstation laptop, I know becuase I personally own one) with a T7600 which runs at 2.33 GHz and a discrete workstation class video card. What gives, for the given configuration, the T61 with the T7300 processor is a great performer from my experience and I have been working with many laptops from HP, Dell and Lenovo, doing work and gaming. This T61 is a great buy, especially considering the price I paid which is more than $700 off the market price. I would prefered the Flexview display like I have on the T60p and the Magnesium case, but I guess for a fixed configuration and the price differential against the T60p, I can't complain.
