"REAL WORLD ISSUES, BUT GREAT SPECS MAKE IT JUST AVERAGE" on by CNETwhatchdog
Pros: - i5 works great
- Top notch keyboard
- Minimal bloat wear
- Samsung utilities work well
- Speakers / Sound respectable
- It is FAST FAST FAST over all
- Battery life is very good
- DVD drive very fast and low noiseCons: -The Screen
- Mirror, has worst reflection ever
- Colors are washed out
The Touch pad
- Hard to use
- Too sensitive
- Pointer jumps
- Impossible to highlight and copy
- Gestures just ok
- Poor Clicking on padSummary: The Bottom line is that this is very good machine with very good specs, but the two of the three interface devices(screen, keyboard, touch pad) preform at an unacceptable level. I want to love this laptop but the fact is that the screen and touch pad have issues that I am unable to get past.
THE SCREEN
The screen is a mirror! I can see every thing that is going on behind me all the time, and that is just annoying as H - - L! Watching a movie is or video that is not super bright (like a daylight scene) is like staring in the mirror. Adjusting the angel of the screen does not change the reflective nature of this screen. FULL SCREEN WEB BASED VIDEO FLICKERS! Samsung is supposed to be fixing this? DVD playback was less than average, the picture was grainy and washed out
THE TOUCH PAD
The only thing that I can say about this touch pad is; "NICE TRY". The one piece design makes clicking difficult and inaccurate. The sensitivity of this touch pad is also off the wall, the pointer jumps and scrolling is jumpy. I have no idea why the whole pad clicks but does nothing unless your up at the extrema front outer corners. The pad commonly cannot distinguish between a left and right click, and trust me this one will drive you our of your mind! (For what it is worth the two finger scrolling work OK, not great but OK).
The final thing that kills me is the stupid power cord connection at the laptop, after only a couple of days the plug is loose to the point that the screen would dim because it repeatedly fell out of the laptop.
I am puzzled how this laptop got such excellent reviews around the net. Either they did not use it long enough or they looked at the hardware and the price and went that a great deal. Or they just thought is was a macbook.
My last major complaint is that the palm rest and the keyboard frame are plastic not the nice brushed aluminum that is used on the lid and the first two inches of the keyboard deck.
On paper this is one heck of a laptop but the complete uselessness of the touch pad and the super mirror screen kill its day to day usability. I am sorry but this laptop is not worthy of being called a top pick. It's a shame samsung came so close but close does not cut it for my daily computing needs or yours! -
"DO NOT BUY" on by kirtika_R
Pros: Cheap given its specifications.
Cons: Many Samsung laptops come with a defective screen. See 'summary' section for more details
Summary: Many models ship with a defective screen.
The display suddenly splits into two parts, with a white vertical patch in the middle. Both halves display only the left side of the screen.
If you connect it to an external monitor, it works fine.
This problem has been reported by several Samsung notebook owners on the links below:

The customer service is horrible to say the least, so getting your screen replaced can be a nightmare.
Better to just stay away from it in the first place. -
"Excellent computer. Very fast and powerful." on by jam240sx
Pros: Attractive Aluminum casing.
Great display, with backlit LED. HDMI port.
Standard keyboard, I prefer to use wireless keyboard and mouse when at home.
Boots quickly, but that feature can be disabled.
WEI is 3.8 because of graphics limits.
WIMAX.Cons: Doesn't have blue ray or bluetooth. Both features should have been standard for the price of this laptop.
Keyboard isn't backlit, hard to use in dark rooms.
Only 3 USB ports.Summary: Overall it is a very attractive and well performing machine. The Windows Experience Index is 3.8, because that is the maximum rating for the graphics processor. Average WEI is around 5.6 on a scale of 7.
it is easy to tether any wifi device to the computer and interface with it. Pretty cool feature.
I haven't noticed a problem with the touchpad. You can also scroll the sidebar with it, by running your finger down the right side of the touch pad.
I dislike that it only has 3 USB ports, but it is a laptop and is supposed to be portable. I have my Ipod touch and Sony Ericsson Cell phone linked to it and can interface with those devices wirelessly instead of using a USB cable.
Battery life is not very impressive, so if you take your laptop with you, remember to bring the power cable, because you will need it sooner than you expect. But, the computer does have great power saving abilities and with the instant boot, you don't have to waste time and battery life booting up the computer.
I am not an expert, so I am sure there are many great features that I just haven't figured out yet. I know you can connect to a commercial wifi provider via WIMAX in some cities and have coverage no matter where you are, but if you are away from a major metropolitan area you probably won't ever use it.
It is pretty big, but lightweight too. So, if you are looking for a computer to do work or study with, then it is a great tool. It even does well with some of the high graphics games for entertainment. But, it isn't a graphics powerhouse and you might have to regularly go to the NVIDIA website to update the graphics card. I would recommend going to NVIDIA and bypassing Windows or Samsung for graphics cards updates.
I love my computer and I am sure it will serve me well for the next few years. -
