"Not worth the money." on by dz_wolf21
Pros: Design, features, specs, looks really good on paper
Cons: Slow from day 1, spontaneously combusted 2 years later, couldn't keep a strong wi-fi signal, compatibility issuse, etc...
Summary: I had a Sony Vaio before this one, and it was excellent. So excellent in fact that I was completely sold on the Vaio line. So, when I started doing research on this model, at the time of purchase it had the most features for the lowest price tag. We scoured a ton of stores to find this, as most were sold out, and I was psyched to get it.
The problem is, it was slow from the beginning. Even before I did much with it, it just ran slower than it should have for the money. I dealt with it, as it still ran fast enough for me to do most things comfortably, but it got worse with time.
It had issues with the wi-fi. For some reason it wouldn't hold a very strong connection ever. I know it wasn't just a modem issue, because it happened everywhere, and did not happen with my old Vaio. It was still useable, just had to manually disconnect and reconnect a lot to find the signal. Basically, a pain.
I also ran into some HDMI cable issues when trying to play Blue-Ray discs, using my TV screen as the "monitor". I never did get that bug worked out.
Then the icing on the cake was when it spontaneously combusted on me this morning. It was working great the night before, then all of a sudden WHAM! My computer stops working. I start in safe mode, do virus checks (there wasn't one), and a defrag, and clean up, thinking it will be all better. Nope. I try to restart, and the computer never came on again. No warning. No strange behavior previously. Just dead and gone out of nowhere.
It's sad because I really do like a lot about Sony Vaio's, but I can't justify spending over 1,000 on a computer that stops working completely shortly after the 2 year mark.
My suggestion is, if you're looking at a Vaio, look at some other models. Read up on the reliability, and make sure the Vaio you're looking at isn't a problem child. I found out my model had a TON of common problems only after purchasing it. So do yourself a favor and check that out in advance.
Vaios can be amazing when they are working correctly, but this one is not a winner. -
"Will never buy a sony product again" on by taw2424
Pros: many features for the price
Cons: slow, poorly made
Summary: After 25 years, I will never buy another Sony product. After and year and a half, the power button fell off from opening and closing. the store tech said this was a known issue. Sony customer service said they never heard of it. Sony maintenance is horrible and customer service is worse. Sony used to stand for quality, not anymore. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

"Piece of you know what" on by meg_atron
Pros: Wide screen
Cons: The power button has since fallen off, the left click doesn't always click, it came with windows vista, keys are really spaced apart.
Summary: Bottom-line stay away from this laptop. It has nothing but problems. I updated to windows 7, which i had to re-download all the drivers and such. Not all the drivers would download back. Due to vista i had the infamous Blue. Screen. Of. Death. The power button fell off and eventually stopped turning on. Recently got that fixed and has popped off again. The clicker doesn't always work, becomes worn far too fast. Battery doesn't last very long even on the lowest settings. Now that i had everything fixed, the laptop is even worse. I'm trying to get it replaced with something else. Do NOT buy this laptop there are far better ones out there.

"Ok Laptop, TERRIBLE Customer Service" on by dannoyd
Pros: The Sony Vaio VGN-FW is an average computer - a bit heavy but solid on performance.
Cons: Sony has bar none the WORST customer service that I have ever dealt with anywhere. I will never buy a Sony product again.
Summary: I have never dealt with such poor service in my entire life as I dealt with for my Sony Vaio VGN-FW. Less than six months after purchasing the computer the network connection stopped working. After two hours of dealing with Sony tech support they finally sent a technician, who replaced the network card but still didn't solve the problem. The next step was to send the computer to the Sony fix-it center where it was to be ?assessed? and ?processed?. Then, I got the news ? according to Sony the switch to the wireless card was broken in the off position, it was somehow "my fault", and it would cost $700 to replace. This was a complete and utterly false and shameful assertion on their point, especially since the only time that the wireless switch had ever been used was when the Sony tech had toggled it in her diagnostics. After two days and considerable agony dealing with the customer service center I was finally able to get Sony to agree to replace the network card with no cost. All told the experience cost me two full days of my life and a month without my computer ? all to get what I should?ve had all along . . . a working laptop. I bought a Sony due to their reputation as a top-notch brand, but I will never make that mistake again ? they were deceitful in how they approached the issue and they made every attempt to screw me along the way.
