Summary: I purchased this laptop from Best Buy as one of their Next Class Laptops. The only issue that I have had with this laptop was that the antivirus was not installed and I had to return to Best Buy to have the Geek Squad install the missing software.
People are going to complain about the battery life on the laptop, but I think it is great. I have been unplugged for about 2 and a half hours and still have about 50% left. Just turn on power saver and turn the screen brightness all the way up. You'll never be able to tell its on power saver.
Comparing the price versus the amount of hardware that you get plus the software, the computer is a steal.
The computer is not designed for gaming so as long as you understand that before you buy the laptop, you'll be ok. For school work, this laptop is going to be great.
I would definately recommend purchasing this laptop to anyone who needs one for school or even if you don't. -

Pros: Probably the best configuration i could find for this price
Cons: Bigger, heavier than I wanted, and battery life shorter than advertised
Summary: I spent a LOT of time looking at laptops for back-to-school, and this was the best setup I could find for the money. Excellent ram, memory, and mine came with office 2007 installed (also Windows 7 ready). The design is nice, doesn't feel cheap or have that shiny plasticky feel of the newer HPs.
Advertised battery life is "up to 5.5 hours" and that just seems totally false. I knew that figure was under optimal conditions, but even with the brightness down and the wireless off I am still able to get 2, 2 1/2 hours max.
Also at 6 pounds, its on the higher end of the scale for portability. Still it's a fine computer and I'm probably going to keep it. -

Pros: Overall pretty fast computer, I got it with a free upgrade to Windows 7 which I liked at the time. Decent processor, standard video memory for cost at time of purchase. Nice look. Upgraded to Ubuntu Linux, and it works right out of the box.
Cons: Track pad sucks: uncomfortable texture, the slightest amount of dust causes the mouse to jump around, and one day it just stopped working for a good week.
Processor has a good clock speed, but it's front side bus is not very fast.Summary: Over all I like this computer, I wish it had a different track pad, and I wish the front side bus was faster. At first I liked the Windows 7 upgrade, however I found myself upgrading to Ubuntu Linux, and just keeping Windows 7 for the occasional gaming. Not sure how well a ram upgrade to 8 GB would improve it, that's what I'm looking for right now, and if I upgrade I'll post how much it improved the performance.

- Had to be repaired 3 times already due to various hardware issues:
DVD/CD drive did not work, could not burn a back up
Screen went black and did not display
Memory card slot would not read any memory cardsSummary: If you're a student like me, and this computer is supposed to be geared towards students, you can't wait 3 weeks each time to get your computer fixed. Professors don't care if your computer is being repaired. So it was an inconvenience for me to have to go to a library to write papers/research rather than being in the comfort of my own home (where I find it easier to concentrate)

"SONY IS HORRIBLE AT HONORING WARRANTY" on by ulara
Pros: Thought this was a great computer at first because:
--very attractive design
--special at Best Buy, included Student MS Office
--great price at the timeCons: --display is a little disappointing considering it was supposed to be an upgraded display according to the specs listed
Summary: This situation is just unbelievable! This is my first Sony computer and will be the last; I am just fuming over this. After only a few months the center keys just started coming off, each a few weeks apart it seemed. The individual key mechanism underneath each key is very intricate with tiny plastic pieces and it looked like something was broken on each that held it together. The first thing we did was contact Sony and they were very helpful and said they would send out a replacement keyboard right away and that we would just have to have it installed which would not cost very much. They sent us a generic keyboard that was the wrong one! We then took it to Best Buy and they told us they had already received several of these computers back with this very same issue! They said they would send it to Sony for us for the keyboard replacement and that it would definitely be covered under the warranty and it should only take a couple of weeks. Well a month later we find out that they returned the unit back to Best Buy saying that the keys were damaged (by the user) and that they would not cover it. Sony then demanded $165 for just looking at it which Best Buy did not make us pay....they said they would fight it out with Sony.
We picked up the computer and brought it to one of our local computer shops and the guy said he agreed it was absurd that this was not covered under warranty....you can clearly see that there is absolutely no physical damage to the computer....and said he would call Sony for us and try to pursue it. He said sometimes when a business calls instead of an individual person it can help.
Another week later we are back at square one because again Sony refuses to cover the replacement of the keyboard. Now that they have this in their record there is no arguing about it. Whoever looked at it originally at Sony and decided it was "user damage" is a complete idiot. Both Best Buy and the people at the computer place agree that there is no user damage.
It is going to cost us $150 to replace this with a refurb keyboard, over $200 for a new one from Sony.
This whole thing doesn't make sense since when we originally called Sony about this they said nothing about the possibility of them not covering a keyboard; what was happening was explained in full detail to them. It's a mystery as to why they sent a generic keyboard to us that is not even for this computer....maybe the original person we spoke to at Sony had no idea of what they were doing?
In our immediate family alone we have owned six laptops in the last ten years and around eight desktops in the last sixteen years and a few wireless keyboards and we have NEVER had a key fall out!
