    "great machine" on by roro101

Pros: ultra-portable, super durable, great keyboard, integrated wi-fi, wow factor

Cons: can be a bit slow on the draw

Summary: I LOVE my Portege 2000. I call it my little charmer; I have met more people because of this machine just becuase they are curious about the smallest, thinnest, lightest, sexiest laptop they've ever seen. My configuration is exactly what was reviewed, plus the SystemGuard Warranty. I've had it since February 2003 and it worked beautifully until December of 2004, when the harddrive went. Toshiba replaced the drive and also replaced my monitor, which had a few contact scratches from the keyboard. When I got it back, my Wi-Fi card was on the fritz so that was replaced, also. One week ago, my husband managed to spill red wine all over the computer, so it was brought in for repair, yet again, which was thankfully completely covered by my warranty.

I purchased the Portege strictly for portability; I use it to take notes in class, research and write papers away from home, etc. I have my desktop as my primary computer, which I've also outfitted with an SD slot. The monitor can't be beat, it's brighter than most other LCDs I've seen and it's bigger than you would think for such a small machine. Also, the keyboard is the only laptop keyboard that doesn't pain my wrists so I can type for long periods of time. Because of the long battery life, I can take it on trips and actually use it while travelling. Lately, we've hooked up a GPS unit to work with MS Streets & Trips since we're big fans of road-tripping. The USB GPS unit did drain the battery, so I got maybe 4 instead of the usual 6 hours. Not so bad, just the same.

Overall, I love my machine and I do hope that it lasts for a very long time. I know of no other computer that literally fits in a lady's purse! It completely eliminates the need for a laptop carrying case since it's so light and thin.

    "Unexpectedly reliable" on

Pros: Used it for a year in school. First thing, great key board. It does not flex, and the keys are crips. I used to use IBM laptops which have good keyboards. But this one is better. The strokes are shorter, but so firm and crisps that it's a pleasure to

Cons: You need 512 MB ram for it to work well. wifi range is pretty poor.

"Great but what a noisy hard drive !" on

Pros: -Light, you already know it -You can regulate the cooling method so that the fan is not working all the time. -I appreciate the disposition of the keyboard: pgup and pgdn keystrokes near the arrow keystrokes are practical, as well as de Del keystroke near

Cons: There are 2 problems on this machine, one of them is very important: -The hard drive is really noisy, with a piercing noise that becomes quickly unbearable for me: it is the only real problem of this machine, but it is a big one. -Otherwise, the keystroke

    "Awesome for its size" on

Summary: Not much to say, what you see is what you get. Super thin, light, and portable even with the extended battery (which gives it an amazingly long life). Sure it's a little slower than larger notebooks for the same price, but LOOK AT IT! I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the same price range.
