"An amazing feet of human engineering"
Pros: lightest computer ever, a pleasure to use
Cons: not the most durable machine
Summary: I was compelled to create a CNet account when I saw the negative reviews of a machine that to me is the coolest consumer electronic product on the market. And by FAR the BEST lightweight laptop.
I have the R500-S5003 with flash memory and 2G of RAM and have had it for almost a year. This thing is amazing! It is 1.7 lbs. Enough said. About half the weight of the macbook air and every other superlight computer out there - even lighter than the Sony TX series and similar computers with smaller screens and cramped keyboards.
This has a full sized keyboard. And a cool screen that can been seen well outside with sunlight (though I do think Toshiba should offer a traditional screen option). It is fast and terrific - I got it with XP since Vista is no good, so can't speak for vista performance.
As to complaints about there being a little flex in the plastic - I don't see why that bothers people - it is very minor and has no effect on performance - maybe they are just not used to it. Even skyscrapers flex with the wind.
It is also very attractive and wicked thin with all the ports you'll ever need.
If you're top priority is lightweight then this blows everything else out of the water and mine has been SUPER RELIABLE. The great thing is that, unlike its heavier micro-competitors (like sony TX and new lenovo U110), you don't sacrifice screen size or keyboard size. This thing simply plays on another level and there is nothing else like it.
