"Not sure what to do!" on by Terryana
Pros: Quiet, bright LCD-maybe too bright ...eye strain? Great features in a slim laptop.
Cons: Very poor speaker quality compared to other desktop relacements even after using Toshiba Virtual Sound to tune it. Resolution is less than HP zd 8080 could be sharper!
Summary: I have purchased both HP zd8080 and the Toshiba Qosmio to try to decide on which one to keep. The HP is a great computer but the noisy fan is a huge distraction when you are doing work in a quiet environment. Toshiba is a much more compact, well styled notebook with similar features that is quite quiet however......the speakers don't seem to handle the sound, even when I tuned them with the virtual sound utility! The brightness of the LCD is great but I wonder about eye strain from it being too bright and finally, side by side, the High Def LCD on the HP zd8080 is way more sharp and makes the Toshiba look fuzzy for sure! I wish Toshiba had invested a bit more in native resolution and also in the speakers. The Satellite P30 has better sound but not the amazing features of the Qosmio!

"It Is What It Is! Best In Any Class!" on by djmpvb
Pros: After two months of heavy use, it performs as advertises. Please read entire review.
Cons: None that I have experienced nor think of. Truly the best in it's class.
Summary: In the last 15 years, I have no doubt spent a small fortune buying and building desktop computers. After much research, I purchased the Toshiba - Qosmio G-15 about 2 months ago for 2999.00. So here is my review:
A true desktop replacement-so don't expect good battery life or a lightwieght (at approx 10 lbs).
Very nice and sturdy disign-unlike Dell notebooks.
Came with 512 MB Ram in one of the two slots (so there is one open slot that I used to add another 512). Comes with two harddrives, one 60GB and one 40GB. Fast and effortless wireless anywhere around my house and patio. The best 17" LCD screen I have ever seen in a notebook.Plays TV,DVD and CD with excellant quality in both OS systems. The DVD playback with and without the OS booted in full screen mode is absolutely fantastic on the 17 inch Qosmio. I have not experienced any pixelation, motion/shadow artifacts, flickering, edge blurring. You name it and the Qosmio can probably get it done with excellent results. All this is made possible by the heavily touted QosmioEngine, the screen is pretty incredible. As for glare, it is indistinguishable from that caused by the reflective coating on virtually every other laptop in this category. If you are looking for a high quality notebook with the 17inch screen that will do everything, then look no further. The Harman/Kardon Speakers are amazing and with the software drivers properly tuned, provides an incredible surround sound. It's a true pleasure to be able to do serious work while listening to my music library (using mmjb not supplied) with the TV minimized to a small sqaure that can be dragged around the screen as needed.
This is truely the only notebook on the market that offers everything for the multimedia/business needs in one small package without having to buy into a dozen add-on options like Dell tries to trick you into, making thiers cost much more. -
"Nice Overall Package but Quirky Screen" on
Pros: The convergence factor (TV, DVD, PVR, PC) in a self-contained package managed by Media Center cannot be beat. If you are looking for an all-in-one that you would primarily use as a secondary media system (in the office or master bedroom) and for light tr
Cons: I have not seen this mentioned anywhere else, but DVD playback without the OS booted and also in full screen mode using WinDVD or Media Center is absolutely horrendous on the 17 inch Qosmio. Pixelation, motion/shadow artifacts, flickering, edge blurring,

"Repair takes almost 2 months already - mistake of buying 2 Toshiba laptops" on by listicka
Pros: Speedy good looking laptop
Cons: Faulty fans, cover on speakers buzzing even music isn't listened to on both laptops
Summary: I do have 2 Toshiba Qosmio G15 laptops. One is currently in a repair through a Toshiba Authorized Repair Center. I submitted the laptop on February 2, 2006, and the repair is still not finished as of March 24, 2006. On March 5, 2006 Toshiba ordered Authorized Repair Centers to send all these notebooks to Toshiba for a repair due to Toshiba’s request - mainly motherboard failure's. Our motherboard is broke, so is one fan.
I talked to the Repair Center, later to Toshiba Customer Service yesterday (3/23/06) again, they couldn’t tell me why is it such a problem to have the laptop for such an unbelievable length in a repair. I asked for a supervisor or a manager, however the customer service representative put me on a hold only and told me later that the laptop will be repaired on March 31st because I insisted on knowing how much longer will this repair take.
We received an extended 2nd year warranty from Toshiba On January 18th, however our laptop was broke for 2 weeks already. We noticed one fan to stop working. Later on while using the laptop it shut itself off. We couldn't turn the laptop on since.
I was told by the Repair Center that there are numerous Qosmio laptops in repair due to motherboard failure.
My second laptop owned since June 26, 2006 is having problems as well. One of the fans stopped working last week. I don’t game on this laptop. I believe I am having the same issue with this laptop as the other one, it is just matter of a time when the motherboard will stop working. I do turn it off as I feel the laptop starts to heat up.
There is also another problem with these particular laptops. The speakers cover is made from aluminum and gets loose very fast, which produces terrible buzzing sound even while playing occasional sounds from the internet semi-quietly. I don’t play music on my laptop, however the buzzing started after couple of months of owning the second laptop. Both of our laptops have the same problem – due to cheap material used for covering speakers area.
I won’t buy another Toshiba laptop due to a unrealistic long repair time. These laptops have lots of problems, especially Satellite laptops and seems to me as Qosmio isn’t much better choice neither. -
"Hardware failures left, hardware failures right..." on by millemik
Pros: Gorgeous screen, tons of AV features
Cons: Serious hardware failures, heavy, very short battery life.
Summary: I was thrilled to finally get a Qosmio. Problem was the Combo drive didn't work. Was hard and time consuming to get it replaced (back-ordered), then found out that model was discontinued (AV201). Even happier to get the upgraded Qosmio AV501. Three weeks later the screen went solid white. Off and on at first then nothing but white. Toshiba support responded fast enough with onsite support, but the bumbling tech caused 5 new problems making it just as useless. I started in March. It's now mid way through July and I still don't have a working Toshiba notebook. Avoid this product and save yourself the headaches.
