"A great laptop for under $900." on by chamindawije

Pros: Huge hard drive (500GB); Excellent memory (4GB); Very good processor (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor at 2.0GHz; Excellent bright screen with rich colors; Very good, comfortable, backlit keyboard; Very good touch pad; Fingerprint reader for easy log on.

Cons: Speakers are really really poor quality; I don't know why Toshiba added this kind of horrible speakers for such a great laptop!

Summary: You get so many features for the price you are paying! You won't get as many from other laptop makers. Except for the poor speaker quality, the laptop is excellent! Good battery life up to 4.5 - 5 hours; light and thin; sturdy construction.

This is an update for my review of September 24th. Had this laptop for about 1 1/2 months now; works great! Great portable machine; I take it to school almost every day. Very good at multitasking because of good RAM and fast processor.

The speaker quality can be increased using several customizations in Windows: Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound>Realtek High Definition Audio Properties>Enhancements: I added bass and now the quality is good.

"stylish but not multimedia-ready" on by quecher

Pros: The size is a good compromise between tiny Netbooks and full-screen behemoths. Would fit discreetly in most messenger/commuter bags. Only the trackpad is matte - the texture gives a more precise feel.

Cons: Speakers are tinny even at low volumes. They were not loud enough for me to watch a movie in an air-conditioned room, without leaning forward. When I plugged in headphones, the online NPR feed sounded like the hosts were talking in a funnel!

Summary: Nice style and size. Lots of bang for the buck. Desperately needs a speaker/sound quality upgrade.

""Do you feel lucky, punk?"" on by Trulee_Pist

Pros: When they work, and if its the kind of laptop you like, then this is the kind of laptop you'd like, if it works.

Cons: Toshiba likes to run out the clock on the one-year warranty and the 2 year extended warranty, then tell the customer "you are out of luck." This is well documented (at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/toshiba.html ).

Summary: IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR TOSHIBA LAPTOP, YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK. We bought two Toshiba Satellite P100 laptops in June 2006. One works fine, and we have no complaints. The other is an obvious lemon, beyond the ability of Toshiba to repair, and on that one, we have no recourse. It arrived inoperable, with power cord issues initially then, within its first week, went to the Blue Screen of Death. Since buying this lemon from Toshiba Direct, and on instructions from Toshiba "Customer Service," we have taken it to the Local Authorized Repair Service (2 times), shipped it to Toshiba Repair Depot (4 times), and shipped it to Nexicore Toshiba VIP Repair Service (2 times). Each time it comes back to us inoperable, the same Blue Screen of Death. We have had less than 40 hours of use from this computer in 3 1/2 years. Toshiba refuses to deem the lemon "uneconomical to repair," and therefore refuses to replace it with a working machine. Toshiba cannot repair it and refuses to replace it. So, ask yourself this before buying a Toshiba: "Do I feel lucky/" Because if you get a lemon, you are out your money and will never get satisfaction from Toshiba.

"Fab machine with service issues" on by jtdatagal

Pros: Lightweight, fast, great battery life, backlit keyboard

Cons: Service problems! Warning buyers that the machine cannot be safely worked on by the retailer or other service providers.

Summary: I wanted to LOVE this machine and did.... for exactly 62 days. On day 63 it had a catastrophic hard drive failure. A quick search of the web revealed that I wasn't the only one. Took the machine to Best Buy. After a week I called them to find out what was going on. I was told that this model requires special tools to be opened which Best Buy did not have, which seems odd since Best Buy is the exclusive retailer of this machine and Geek Squad is there service arm. So my choices were to lt them have a go at it, assured they would be responsible for any damage, or send it back to Toshiba and have it be gone for Lord knows how long. I left it with Best Buy. Another week went by until they finally called me for pickup. When I got to the counter, I was told there was nothing they could do. So while I'm sitting there I hit the power button... It boots up and all of my stuff is intact. So I ask the guy what they did and was told that they have a 'special boot disk'. So now I have a practically new laptop, with a probably still defective drive that the retailer can't get to and now I can't send back to Toshiba, becasue there is currently niothing wrong with it.

I'm sad and disappointed that now I have to hope it fails again so I can give it away for a small eternity and get the hard drive replaced.

Oh... and another thing. 2 negative reviews on the Toshiba site (solicited by them) mysteriously were never published.... Makes me think they don't want people to know about the service issue.

"Great Performance, Subtle Style, Poor speaker quality" on by longr2009

Pros: 4GB of ram and 500GB Hard drive plus the Intel Core 2Dual Processor at 2.0GHz make this laptop a great performance machine. It has a more matte finish as opposed to the other glossy laptops that make using the mouse difficult.

    Cons: Horrible speaker quality.

Summary: Great performance for the money, good design!
