Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149 (Celeron M 340 1.5 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD)

Summary: Bought the computer about 6 months ago. Came equipped with everything above, except it had 512mb of memory. It ran pretty good, but decided to upgrade the memory. Took a 256mb stick out and installed a 1gb. Now has 1.21gb of memory, and runs like a champ! It reacted to the memory upgrade amazingly. For a pentium 3, it'll shock you. I got this laptop off Ebay for 250 bucks, and figured it'd be a dud. I just wanted a laptop. It runs faster than my moms new Satellite she bought last year (brand new), and her computer is far more advanced. Never have to worry about freezing or anything in that nature. Will soon be upgrading the dvd-rom drive, to a Dvd burner, and possibly upgrading the processor.

Summary: First off: I take 2 line reviews (1 line of PROS and 1 line of CONS) with a grain of salt and that seems to be what the majority of "bad" reviews for this item here consist of.

Well, we've had our Toshiba M35X for a bit over 15 months now and for the most, we're satisfied and happy with it. Like stated, it's a great starter laptop and it's pretty basic I would say. It does what's needed.

It has pretty much everything needed now days from a laptop. Our issues with our unit is that we didn't purchase the "extended" warranty. For us, we lucked out though. 4 days after our 1 year warranty ran out, the unit also ran out. We started experiencing batter charging problems a couple of months earlier.

I called Toshiba technical support and got nothing but "professional" service from them. They gave me many choices of where I could take my laptop for repairs.

Long story short, I was told the battery wasn't charging because of the motherboard and I would need a new motherboard. My only expense was $65.00 for the diagnostic analysis. Even after my warranty had expired, the motherboard was replaced along with the face plate in which I was told by the repair shop is a very common problem with this model.

Unfortunate about my unit crapping out after the warranty. It now runs perfectly and I have had no issues. One thing I learned is to purchase the extended warranty. I got lucky with the repair company, they "found" a way to cover the repair, others may not be as fortunate.

In closing, while my unit hasn't performed flawlessly, other than needing a repair, it has performed well. I have upgraded to the Toshiba A105 (with 3 year warranty) as our primary laptop but we still use the M35X S149 on a daily basis. It should be cheaper now days. I paid $459.99 when purchased new. Other than the described issue, it has worked fine.
