"Design Flaw Kills Enjoyment of Computer"
Pros: Big, beautiful computer.
Cons: Fan overheats, LDC problems, frequently shuts down.
Summary: I must state, up front, that this is probably one of the more aesthetically pleasing laptops you will encounter. It is big, heavy, and beautiful to look at. It also has a fast processor and works quickly.
However, in the near three years I've owned mine, I've sent it in for repair 16 times. First, the battery fried, on its own (apparently, there was a problem with this model of Toshibas on this). Then, the computer would shut down, all the time. I found out, after three repair visits, that the problem was the overheating fan, which is extremely noisy. It was "fixed" for all of six months, before it started shutting down again (I had to take it in for almost the 10th time now, just to fix this [and I have no illusion the fix will last when I get it back]). Then, the LCD started to have problems. I had to have the LCD screen replaced, twice (some of the pixels would periodically disappear from the screen). Fortunately, I purchased a three year warranty on this computer, so I didn't have to pay out the thousands of dollars worth of repairs, which still hasn't covered the problems this computer has, but the warranty is running out in a few months, and when it has its next breakdown (and it will), there is no way I will spend a another dime on this computer. Lesson learned. Toshiba, you make terrible computers, and you have permanently lost a costumer for any of your future products.

Same problem with the fan. Had warranty that paid for all fixes.
The technician gave me a bit of product history. This model was the first one ("bleeding edge" he called it) of its kind made by Toshiba and they've dealt with the cooling and power issues in designing later iterations.
Because my warranty will xpire in October 2008, I am looking at a Toshiba Satellite Pro L350-S1001V as a replacement that comes with an XP Pro "downgrade" (even after the 6/30/08 deadline) that has a ticket of $1,100 direct from Toshiba. The extended warranty is an extra $239.
The L350 comes with a far better graphics card, a number keypad and an improved power supply so I'll be springing for it shortly.
