"Not a durable product by any measure!"1.0 starson by ptoptom
Pros: Works well when it was working.
Cons: Apparently USB ports are very fragile! Toshiba customer service is horrible!!
Summary: I bought a Toshiba S855 Laptop in August for a computer class. It was used almost exclusively by myself and I transported it in a neoprene sleeve for protection. Apparently one of my daughters tried to insert a flashdrive into one of the USB ports upside down (like all of us have many times before). Apparently this damaged the USB port and since the one next to it is connected to it the second USB port also stopped working. Fortunately there is one other USB port of the opposite side of the laptop which still works. Since this laptop was only a few months old I sent it back to Toshiba for what I thought would be a warranty repair. Instead they said because the port had "physical damage" it was not covered but they would replace the motherboard which includes the USB ports for "only" $325! This was more than half of the cost of the entire laptop!!! I called them and said that simply inserting a flashdrive upside down should not have ruined the motherboard and it was my contention that perhaps that USB port was not solid to begin with because I've attempted to insert a flashdrive upside down countless times and never caused damage to other computers I've ever owned. I was then told my concerns were being forwarded to a case manager and that they would contact me in 3-5 business days. After a week I never heard anything so I called tech support again and once again I was told I would be contacted by a case manager in 3-5 business days. Another week went by and no word so I called back again and this time my call was actually forwarded to a case manager. I tried to explain politely that I felt perhaps the USB port was poorly soldered hence the premature failure. I told them there wasn't a scratch on the unit anywhere, no dents, no chips, no scratches, etc so obviously the laptop was not dropped or abused. I was told by the case manager plain and simply "physical damage, no coverage" and that was that. So then I asked who I speak to up the chain of command and was told I would need to research that myself because she had no idea who to contact next! She could not/would not offer a name, number, department or anything as to where I should go next! I spent 30 years in the military and I always knew who my boss was, who their boss was, and who their boss was! To be told "figure it out yourself" was unbelievable to hear. So I did the research online and got an address for corporate headquarters and again voiced my concerns (in a letter) and told them that yes, the USB port was pushed in but how could it do that with no obvious damage elsewhere on the unit? I asked was it not feasible that there was a weakened solder joint which caused the port to fail so easily? Today I got a letter from Toshiba and they are standing by their claim that there was "physical damage" so therefor Toshiba has no financial obligation to assist me with my claim.
So now I have a 5 month old laptop without a scratch on it but 2 of 3 non-working USB ports. Instead of paying Toshiba $325 to replace the motherboard I went to Walmart and bought a USB hub for $12 and now I can run 4 USB drives from the one remaining working port on this laptop. So, basically it was a cheap and easy fix for me but the principal of the thing is that Toshiba could not even consider that perhaps the USB port was weak to begin with. So instead of giving me the benefit of the doubt and fixing it thereby having a happy satisfied customer they totally blew me off. So, be warned, Toshiba, in my opinion does not stand behind their products. I will NEVER buy another Toshiba product again. If I had dropped the laptop and there was that sort of physical damage I could accept that it was my fault and should not be covered under warranty but for a motherboard to fail when a USB drive is inserted upside down is just not defendable.
