Product summary

The goodThe good: Attractive, modern design; 13-inch size strikes fine balance between portability and utility; can charge USB devices, even when off; glossy screen not too glossy; decent expandability, with eSATA port and ExpressCard slot.

The badThe bad: Performance lags behind competition; mediocre battery life, despite extended battery.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: Toshiba's thin-and-light Satellite U405 is an attractive 13-inch MacBook alternative, but its weak performance means you simply don't get enough computing power for your money.

Editors' note: This review is part of our Holiday 2008 Retail Laptop Roundup, covering specific new configurations of popular laptops that can be found in retail stores.

We've generally liked Toshiba's current Satellite line of laptops, most notable for a clever Sleep-and-Charge feature, which lets you charge USB devices even if the laptop is powered off. The Toshiba Satellite U405D-S2874 is a fixed-configuration 13-inch laptop, a size most closely associated with the popular MacBook line.

This model is substantially similar to the Satellite U405D-S2852 we looked at over the summer, and shares its main flaws: an underpowered AMD processor and mediocre battery life. Compounding that problem, the entry-level MacBook is now only $999, making the $949 Satellite seem even more overpriced, considering its disappointing benchmark scores. There are clearly better (though bigger and heavier) options in the just-less-than-$1,000 category such as the 14-inch Asus X83VB-X1, the 15-inch Dell Studio S1535-143B, or the 16-inch Gateway Gateway MC7801u.

Toshiba refers to the current Satellite design as a "Horizon" pattern in a "Fusion" finish, which basically means silver-gray and black pinstripes that combine for a distinct metallic sheen. It's a smart look that will work in both casual and professional settings, but the lid is far too fingerprint-prone, as are the glossy keyboard keys. We did, however, like that the touch pad is totally flush with the wrist rest--using a different, matte surface material for the touch pad, so you can still easily discern the active area.

The most interesting feature is something called Sleep-and-Charge, which means you can plug in and charge USB devices (iPods, mobile phones, and so on) even if the laptop is in sleep or hibernate mode (and even if it is unplugged, though it will drain the battery). And you can power USB devices when the laptop is totally powered off, too, as long as it's plugged into an outlet. Most laptops provide power to USB ports only while they're turned on. Note that this feature is turned off by default for some reason, and you'll have to hunt around to figure out how to turn it on, as it's buried in a series of submenus. (Start > All Programs > Toshiba>Utilities > HWStup > USB).

The 13-inch wide-screen LCD offers a 1,280x800-pixel native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size and larger 14- and 15-inch models. We generally prefer matte finishes on laptops screens, but didn't mind the glossy display on the U405, (or Toshiba's other Satellites) as it seemed more resistant to excessive glare than other glossy screens.

As on the previous U405 we looked at, there's a labeled spot for an HDMI output, but it's plugged shut, leaving only the VGA output for video. There's no Bluetooth, but at least there's an eSATA port for connecting an external hard drive and an ExpressCard slot.

In all the systems we've looked at in our Holiday Retail Laptop Roundup, those with AMD CPUs have consistently underperformed Intel-powered laptops in the same price range. This was also true of the U405, which had a 2.1GHz GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core RM-72. It was noticeably slower than the Dell Studio S1535-143B and the Asus X83VB-X1, both of which have Intel's midrange 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 for roughly the same price.

The Satellite U405 ran for 2 hours and 54 minutes on our video playback battery-drain test, which is better than the last U405 we looked at by about 50 minutes, thanks to a new extended battery that sticks out from the back of the system. But, it's still a far cry from the 4-plus hours the Dell Studio S1535-143B gets from its similarly large extended battery.

Toshiba includes an industry-standard, one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line and a reasonable detailed online knowledge base. Retail stores offer a variety of extended warranty plans with your laptop purchase, but they're generally expensive and hard to use, so we do not recommend them.

Fairly fast, light, and good capacity.

Pros: This laptop comes with the 64bit version of vista, 4gb of ram, a large HD, and a DVD writer.

Cons: The scroll bar locks on the mouse, the AMD processor is not quite as fast as the intel processors in this price range, and web pages have a slight lag when loading.

Review: About a month ago my trusted IBM Thinkpad got doused with a hot cup of coffee when my Wife's Pottery Barn mug broke in my hand. That same day, I went to BestB uy and purchased a Gateway laptop in this price range after reading cnet reviews on light, portable, laptops. Unfortunately, that Gateway made several loud noises and died 17 days after I bought it. As Best Buy's ?generous? return policy ends at 14 days, I was forced to buy another for about the same price from Best Buy - hence this Toshiba, as the Gateway was discontinued.
When compared with the Gateway, this computer lags slightly when loading web pages, but appears faster when using Microsoft Office (both run hula-hoops around the Thinkpad). Antivirus software runs easily in the background due to the dual core processor. The Vista Ultimate edition seems more robust than the Vista Home edition that came with the Gateway, but I hate both.
Some of the features of the computer I like include: 1. The battery life is good with the 9 cell battery. 2. The screen is beautiful. 3. The hard drive is quick. 4. 800MHz ram 5. 64bit computing.
Some small gripes I have abou the computer include: 1. The scroll bar on the touchpad is more responsive than that of my old IBM Thinkpad (which was doused with a nice hot glass of coffee forcing me to buy a new laptop), but locks when scrolling launching me to the end of whatever long webpage I happen to be reading. 2. The casing is very glossy and fingerprints stick like they have been touched by the hand of a greasy two year old. 3. Windows Vista Ultimate has a ton of annoying dialog boxes (this isn't unique to this laptop...but I am coming from Windows XP). 4. The graphics card leads a little to be desired. 5. The speakers are tinny. 6. My wife?s work VPN will not work with the 64bit Vista edition (Nortel is working on this?I don?t feel like reinstalling Vista to downgrade to the 34bit version).
Overall this a fast, capable laptop, with the 64bit version of vista preinstalled (for better or worse).

Great powerful laptop in a nice light weight size!

Pros: Beautiful screen, very light weight and smaller size for traveling,4 gb of memory and power processor with 64 bit operating system

Cons: The sound isn't that loud even when adjusted but I can deal with that

Review: This is an excellent laptop. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and it's super fast. You won't find the kind of specs that this machine has on alot of the competitors laptops for this price as well. I've been researching laptops for about 6 months now and have finally found an incredible laptop for traveling. The size and weight are perfect. The 4gb of memory makes a big difference along with the 250gb hard drive space for saving photos and files while on the road. I really like the multi cd/dvd drive with disk labeling as an added bonus but it also has a multi memory card drive as well for uploading photos easy. The webcam is nice & pretty clear for a laptop and has no delay like some others do. I would highly recommend this laptop for anyone looking for a great powerful laptop especially for traveling. Battery life isn't bad and I've gotten about 4 hrs with a full charge but you can also adjust the settings for less performance power and more battery life which I like as well. Very easy to use right out of the box and connected right online. I've never had a heating issue as one reviewer mentioned. Yes it has heat on the side but doesn't get hot underneath or anything different from any other laptop. Also fingerprints are the least of my worries while using a laptop. Hasn't been an issue for me.
