"Best value in printers I know of"
on by IllustratedSermonsPros Cheap to operate long-term
Cons Slow to cancel print documents
Summary I am replacing one of these printers today for the first time. I have probably put 50 cases of paper through it. I have 3 of these at my church office, and have never had a problem with them. I've been using these printers for nearly 3 years now. Toner can be purchased (rated at 6000 copies) online for as little as $150 for SIX cartridges with free shipping. Drums are available for as little as $69 with free shipping. Drums are good for about 25,000 copies. Do the math. I know of no better value. Performance is enhanced with adding the 32 meg RAM chip (available at e-bay for $6.95 + shipping). If the printer goes bad, just replace it. You can buy it for $89.95 plus shipping, and it comes with new drum and a starter toner cartridge good for about 2,000 copies. Who can beat a deal like this!
My only complaint with this printer is that when you send something to print and say, "Oops! I didn't need 50 of that!" When you try to cancel you can waste a lot of paper fast. Tip: open the paper drawer on the printer quick so it can't feed more. Then switch the printer off for a few seconds while you cancel the document on the computer. Switch the printer back on and you're good to go. -
"Dirty Print Outs!!!!"
on by spamtombPros Dirty prints eliminates all Pros!!!
Cons Extremely Dirty Print Outs!!!
Summary This is worst printer ever! The printer spits out extremely dirty print outs. The entire page is covered in gray. I got it as a new printer three to four years ago at Frys Electronics. (I don't remember the exact year.) I don't print a lot - maybe on average of one page per week at most. Less than one year, all my pages started having this grey color. I cleaned the drum by wiping down on roller and rolling the gears as I clean. I used an air duster to blow away any toner. It was clean as a whistle. I then placed it back into the printer. My prints were a little bit better, but there was that visible grey cloud cover over the entire page. I agree with another used that it wouldn't work for resumes or college projects. It certainly wouldn't work for some kind of business proposal. Your customers would be laughing thinking that you can't afford a decent printer with clean print outs. I thought that prehaps there were some areas that I didn't clean the first time. I planned to clean it again, however, I got busy and didn't touch my printer for two long years. Over the last two years, it got progressively worst. The grey was getting darker. Today, I decided to bite the bullet and clean it again. I took out the toner and drum and cleaned both of them. They were spotless! Then I took a dry towel and wiped the window on the upper inside mouth of the printer as Brother had suggested on their website. The pages came out cleaner. BUT....there was that persistant grey again. It never went away. It only decreased. Believe it or not, after all that cleaning, print outs are still NOT suitable for resumes, college projects or business proposals! The Brother website says that once the toner is low, it causes grey print out. BALONEY!!!!!! When I was cleaning my drum and toner cartiages today, my toner was very heavy, indicating that it was still full of toner. It wasn't even have empty. That's because I only print out no more than one page a week on average. I've used HP printers at work and I know what an empty toner cartiage feels like. My Brother toner cartiage was absolute FULL and felt heavy. As a matter of fact, it's still brand new!!! In addition to that, my toner indicator on the face of the printer never once lit up telling me that the toner was empty!
I truly REGRET purchasing this printer. I bought it because I believe in Japanese quality. Who would ever of thought that Brother was making the worst laser printers in the world!
Don't buy this Brother HL-1440 laser printer from EBay or anyone else. You will soon discover that it's a LEMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brother, you owe me $500 dollars for the printer and the extra toner cartiage that I bought plus all the headaches! -
"Drum Problems/Paper Feeds problems."
on by noteboomPros Short lifetime.
Cons Worked great initially.
Summary My first problems started occurring around the 500 printed page count. Paper Feed problems.
Then the drum problems began. The entire page looks like someone brushed charcoal over the entire page. Totally worthless for resumes or mailings.
At first, I thought it was my bad luck. But as I research for a new printer, I took a look and found many similar problems so I thought I would add my two cents.
Maybe you can get a year of use and 1000 pages out of it. That's all I got. So I will be looking for another brand. -
"Great printer! Great Value!"
on by DoubletwistPros Reliable, inexpensive, perfect Linux compatibility
Cons Wish the paper tray had a larger capacity
Summary I've had this printer for many years. I'm not a real heavy printer, but when I've got a large print job, this printer is a workhorse. It is pretty quick to come out of sleep mode, and I've never had a single paper jam. That's more than I can say for many of the HP's I've used over the years.
The memory was very easy to upgrade. I do wish it had a larger capacity paper tray, but considering I paid less than a hundred bucks for this printer that is a very minor issue.
One of my favorite aspects of this printer is that it is very well supported in Linux, and even the Windows drivers don't load up your system with useless, memory-hogging utilities.
The build quality is surprisingly good, without being too heavy.
I highly recommend this printer.
