    "Coulda' been great" on

Pros: looks cool; good price; nice printing

Cons: Paper curls excessively. Sounds like a minor issue but gets very annoying. I tried heavy grade laser paper but still curls. Also, there is a back door to fix paper jams but not usable for 'straight thru' printing. Surprisingly, the model this replaces (HL

"Not disapointed after much soul searching" on by jgraywil

Pros: Speed of printing; ease of setup, quality of print

    Cons: True, it is loud

Summary: Doing serious soul searching as I read through the countless reviews I finally took the plunge and purchased this printer. And like almost everything, there are good points and couple of things that could be better.

It is "somewhat" loud but, considering the price (I caught this printer on sale and got it considerably below street price) this to me, at least is not a serious problem. Noise is relative anyway, what to me is quite acceptable probably drives others to the point of madness.

Might as well be honest, yes, as some have reported, the paper does curl, but — here again to me it doesn't curl much and it bothers me none at all. Curling tolerance is also relative I suppose.

I wasn't greatly pleased over the fact the printer doesn't come with a USB 2 cable (something that I think I've never encountered before) but things have to be kept in perspective, the price on this piece of hardware is quite unbelievable anyway, so this is no big shake.

I'm impressed. I'm glad I bought this printer and if it holds up well, I'll look to Brother in the future, having shyed away from the company in the past perhaps this is a good learning situation for me.j

"Best home B&W printer I've found" on by oleblade

Pros: easy setup , quick printing , compact , and cheap

    Cons: none I've found

Summary: Sure beats all 3 ink-jets I've tried to use with the expensive ink and complicated setup . The Hl2040 even prints good black and white images

"Very Happy with purchase" on by PBPeformanceDS

Pros: Fast printing, small size, simple

Cons: Read below, about paper feeder tray

Summary: I would have rated this a 10, because I have gotten everything it promised, but I got a warning that it is very extreme to do so and I got scared. I can't mark it down just because it doesn't have things it didn't advertise. It is as small printer for a small office or home. Fast printing speeds, good performance, and great printing results.
I have had this printer for about 9 months now, and I love it. I personally don't see a big deal with the slight amount of paper curling that I get when printing on postcard stock, it is easy to flatten and doesn't affect it enough that it ruins the outcome of whatever you are printing. Anyhow, I think it prints very quickly and can handle a lot of pages per month.
We use it on two computers at our auto repair shop, and print about 80 to 200 pages a day, occasionally more with flyers.
My only con is that once in a great while, when I try to use the paper feeder slot the paper light starts flashing and it wont print without pulling the paper out and clearing the light. I realized after the 2 time (in 9 months) that it happens when I put the paper in a few minutes before I hit print. If I set it up to print, put the paper in, hit print it will work with no problems.
The toner is easy to replace and very inexpensive. Infact an employee at office max was the one that pointed that out when I was trying to narrow my choices. My top choice at first had 90 dollar toner refills while this one is about 60.
I also love how small this printer is, you can put it just about anywhere. Overall I am very happy with this printer. I actually would buy another one without a second thought, for our new office, but I am looking for a color printer.

"Problems out of the box" on by Jay149

Pros: Great Prints when it works right.

    Cons: Very unreliable

Summary: Had problems with the first one out of the box, so sent it back to the place we got it from and replaced it with the same. After 2 days we had problems with the printer not picking up the paper (poor design with the gears on the paper tray that pick up the paper to the pickup rollers not lining up right with the gears on the inside of the printer and very noisy when it was working), print jobs sent to the printer and not printing what-so-ever (but the print monitor on the computer reported no errors and this was right at the end), and printing to slightly thicker than 25lb paper causes it to smell bad (paper used was a laser printer friendly cd label). I would not recomend this printer at all unless the place I bought it from just got a very bad shipment.
