"Ships with introductory toner only good for 1000 copies" on by adab31

Pros: 1) Low price, 2) fairly compact size, and 3) good quality output, 4) drum rated at 12,000 copies, 5) easy to setup

Cons: 1) Unit is shipped with only a 1000 count toner
    2) The 2500 count toner replacement costs more than the sale price of the new printer
    3) no supplies status: no page count remaining on the toner or drum -- control panel lights advise low supply levels

Summary: Printer seems to be a good value at $59 after mail-in rebate at Office Depot this week (10/31), however, I am a bit put off by the reduced count toner unit that the printer ships with. I do not see this mentioned anywhere in the unit specifications or sales literature.

As it turns out, the reduced count 'Starter Toner Cartridge' is mentioned in the product brochure under Supplies and Yields, so there is no overt misrepresentation by Brother. I just did not see it.

Oh and also. I believe pressing the "Go" button will print a page with toner levels as a graph and page count remaining as well as a lot of other information such as pages printed, errors that have occurred, model info, and more.

Also, according to shopper.com a replacement toner can be found for less than half the cost of the $59 printer (price included a mail-in rebate, MSRP is closer to $119) which is an amazing deal for the printer anyway. High capacity toner cartridges are usually around $45 for this printer. I suggest getting the Brother branded cartridges as I have had various issues with generic cartridges that are not worth the $5 savings. A generic cartridge that leaks is not worth the savings.

If you put a piece of black electrical tape over the circle on the cartridge that the printer uses to detect toner levels then you can get at least another 500-1000 pages from the starter cartridge no problem. No need to change the cartridge then until faint streaking is noticeable on the pages. Even then if your printing isn't mission critical then that is still acceptable.
