"Piece of Junk, Made Worse By Brother Lack of Service!"0.5 starson by intogy67
Pros: Compact, fast.
Cons: Poor quality, noisy, sub- standard print quality.
Summary: Bought this because CNET said it was one of the 5 best printers and because I was tired of getting screwed by HP on ink costs. Seemed like a good deal until I noticed that every page it printed had 2-3 little black dots in the background. Figuring it was the drum I checked Brother's online support and they had a special section specifically for my problem. It said that it was in fact the drum and that I needed to clean it. Now the printer was less than 3 days old and had printed less than 50 pages so the fact that there was a special section for the problem and that the drum was already in need of cleaning did not make me feel very positive towards the long term success of the printer. Nevertheless, I attempted to conduct the initial cleaning procedure involving hand feeding a piece of paper through the machine but the printer would not operate as indicated in the troubleshooting guide. There were subsequent steps in the online help if that initial step did not succeed, but they called for a technical background I do not have as well as requiring a work space where you could spill toner (I am not kidding) so I decided to contact Brother via online chat. When I reached John and told him my situation, including the fact that I was unwilling to play computer technician any longer on a brand new $80 printer, he said the only thing he could do is refer me to a service center but since I was being "uncooperative" in being unwilling to do additional troubleshooting I would be charged for whatever service they did. I reminded John that the item was defective and that separately I had bought it from Amazon where a postage paid return and refund were only a few key strokes away. Nevertheless, John and his overlords at Brother refused to support their product. All they had to do is ship me a non-defective drum, but instead they got a nice paper weight when Amazon get's their money back. Funny thing is that Amazon asked me whether I wanted an immediate replacement when I went to return the printer and I said no because obviously Brother has problems with the quality of their products and how they treat their customers. I for one will never buy another Brother product.
