    "In love with it!"

    by tunnelboy2 on June 26, 2008

Pros: Fast, sharp, good color, no jams, large paper tray

    Cons: Heavy, flimsy bypass tray

Summary: I'm thrilled with this thing! For starters it had a very robust start CD that quickly had me on my home network and working flawlessly. The printer seems really quick and the color and sharpness is outstanding. The only negatives I can give it are 1) It's very heavy 2) The bypass paper tray seems very flimsy although it works great and nothing has broken yet 3) Seems like an energy hog when warming up. First time I started out, I noticed my desk light dimming a little. When I looked at the rating tag, I was floored to read that it's rated at 500 watts! That's like a small space heater. When you combine that and your computer and other gizmos on the same circuit.. well you get the picture. Now in all fairness, I should say that after the initial warm-up, it settles down to low power consumption mode. And it's also quite possible that other color lasers use a similar amount (if not more).

But it's really a fantastic printer. One of the best purchases I've ever made and if I was to go out again, I would definitely pick up the same exact one without a doubt.

As far as toner consumption, I'm still on the first set. When we went to buy it, the store guy said I would definitely need to get new toner quickly as the set supplied is only a "starter" set. While that may be true, it's still holding up. I've been pounding it with work (heavy toner usage... dark pages with color) and it's still running fine.

I just bought this printer yesterday. So far I love it! It is satisfyingly solid, in fact the most solid printer you can get under about $2000. It is also very fast, so fast it really makes speed irrelevant unless you have some constant, high speed printing requirements. It was also totally trouble free setting up and using. I have done 100 or so copies so far and no dramas or jams.

I wanted to comment on the power figures. It uses 85W in standby mode which is defaulted to 5 minutes although it can be changed. After this it drops into sleep mode which uses 20W. This is a reasonable figure. Remember it has a web interface which means the CPU inside has to have some power.

This printer uses 85 watts on Standby-Sleep mode, an amazing amount in these days of energy considerations. That heat will make your room warmer over time, as well. In comparison, the Xerox Phaser 6180N uses 70, also high. The Samsung CLP-300 uses 17 and the HP Color LaserJet 1600 uses 13. But I found an HP that uses 3.5 on standby which; unfortunately I lost which one, and perhaps it was a black and white.

The other thing to consider is that many of these machines make a considerable amount of noise when sitting idle, of the machines I saw, 35 to 45 dB, which is equivalent to the low end of talking at 1 meter distance. I know there are other issues to consider... ink costs, first page out, clarity of text, etc... but I am hoping there is something quieter and less energy wasting.

    Hi,
Just wondering if you still love the printer and how it is doing?
I'm thinking of getting one myself but I need some encouragement LOL.
