"Totally inadequate as an office printer" on by qajaq49

Pros: Pro: Well, it does print sometimes, and when it does the quality is okay.

Cons: Cons: Really, really poor paper handling.

Summary: This thing is prone to incessant paper jams. At times, it will jam with the paper in virtually inaccessible locations, making it very difficult to clear. Sometimes feeds extra sheets that overlap the preceding page and pick up text that should have been at the bottom of the previous sheet -- the bottom half of the URL line on a web-page printout, for example. I would not recommend this machine for any use except possibly as a small-boat anchor.

"Constant paper jam issues" on by josietrott

Pros: The automatic duplexing is great - when it works....

Cons: In two years we've had to replace the rubber paper pick up rollers twice because the printer had paper jams all the time. Now it won't duplex without jamming, even with brand new rubber rollers. Also it uses toner faster than it should.

"Paper Jams every time paper runs out." on by kennethwlong

Pros: Print quality is fine and reasonable speed.

Cons: 1. Major con--Paper jams every single time it runs out of paper. Must pull out 2 sheets and let it reprint those pages.
    2. Minor con: the toner reminder is a bit overly ambitious and can be somewhat annoying.

Summary: Consider a secondary paper tray to increase capacity so that you can avoid paper jams.

"What a disappointment..." on by phoenixzion

Pros: Cheap, easy to use, value printer.

Cons: Jams all the time, Not suited for high volume business, Noisy. High amount of waste when the printer pulls too much paper up. Prints black bars across sides of page. Parts are hard to find. No support

Summary: While this is a good value printer for the house, I use it at work and have problems with it daily. This won't do for a job that requires printing all day and you'd be better off spending $20-30 more for something better. I feel like I'm killing this thing more and more every day. I wouldn't buy another to replace it...what a piece of junk.

    "Works great" on by mulestick

Pros: I have used many different laser printers over the past 20 years and this one is as reliable as they come. It does a great job printing 2-sided. booklet and multiple-up pages. It's fast and the print quality is very good.

Cons: I use printer drivers for expensive hi-res computer-to-plate or film ouitput printers for the commercial printing industry and the Dell printer driver is as good as all other printers.

Summary: I would like a printer driver that allows the option of choosing halftone screen lines-per-inch (LPI) and style (round, elliptical, diamond shape). These don't appear in any laser printer drivers available on the market.
The Dell 1720dn is a no muss, no fuss very reliable laser printer. I have used this one for two years and never had any problems. Just purchase a quality 20 lb. bond paper and the rollers will last for years and years. The thicker the paper (24 lb. and up) the quicker the printer weras out.
