"Do NOT Buy This Printer 1440"
Pros: cheap but you will pay later
Cons: the drum replacement is more than printer
Summary: i have 3 brother printers in my family and i will change all 3 of these based off this one issue, THE DRUM . I had a 1440 in a small business and had it around six months and the drum went out, went to buy and found out they anywhere from 150 to a75 more than the printer. called brother and the guy basically said thatat the way it is sorry service, sory printer, whatever you do don't buy, look at HP in the laser printerst hey do not have a drum and no hidden cost as brother, my opinion if i can get one of you not to buy i have done my job, if someone from brother happens to read this i hope you get help with your support & design team

Looking at pricegrabber, I found that toner is $57 (600 pp) and drum is $106 (20,000 pp).
It's true that the drum actually costs more than the printer! $104
***BUT*** the cost per page (including the cost of the drum) is only .00147, ***MUCH LESS*** than most HPs
To make it simpler: you will spend more on HP cartridges *alone* than you will on the Brother cartridges *AND* the printer combined!
My advice after reading the reviews, is this: go ahead and *buy* this printer and, instead of replacing the drum, replace the entire printer when the drum wears out. *ITS STILL CHEAPER THAN HP* -
I disagree with the comment about Brothers support. I had an instance where my client in VanNuys CA bought a brother network enabled printer and had a problem. After installing this printer I contacted Brothers tech support. I feel that they went way out of their way to help. After setting up the same environment to test it at their location, they determined that the particular one we had had a problem and the technician drove a replacement to us from Orange County, CA to save me time since I had a flight to catch to go home to Ohio. I think they provided excellent support.

Two years ago, I followed CNET's recommendation and bought Brother HL1240, and the drum failed in 6 months. A replacement drum would cost the same as to buy a new printer. I thought I was unlucky. Earlier this year I again followed CNET's review, and bourght an HL1440, an updated version of 1240. And guess what, the drum failed again in 6 months. I am so disappointe now that I will never buy another Brother printer. What upsets me is not only the quality of drum, I think Brother knew the drum won't last long, and plotted to lure customers into buying their drums again and again. I might be a little paranoid, but I don't understand why a drum is as expensive as the whole printer.
