    "WARNING - READ FRIST !!!"

by sbirdsc on May 16, 2005

    Pros: Print quality, pricing*

    Cons: No paper tray

Summary: Just an issue to be aware of, if you call HP directly they will tell you that this unit comes with a 125 page tray. This is NOT the case - NO tray is included in this base model. The website says "Keep various paper types ready to go in the included 125-sheet multipurpose tray and optional 250- and 500-sheet trays" The included tray is a 1, 25 page feed that would require you leaving the front of the unit open all the time. Figure to add another $150 to the price then compare it to others on the market.

Please note: in todays world of providing "cheap" prices w/lots of bells and whistles to attract buyers who "perceive" a great Deal simply by price/features, even HP has "greyed" certain terminology... Today, a paper tray on any machine, especially the low-end/base model, describes anything that will hold paper. MANY printers today feature simply a drop down/fold out "MP" tray rather than a true cassette type of days past.

If I can offer any One suggestion in General, (after 12years in the service biz) it's this: Check the "cost of ownership" !!! The machine may be $299 on the front end, but when the toners, drums, transfer units, fusers and other "consumables" need to be replaced you find out that the toners are $125 (each!) x 4 on a color laser, and then you have the latter mentioned items. If you do some homework you may just see that that "great deal" is anything but that. A while back I had a popular Big Name color laser came in. At the time it blew HP away on speed and only cost $499 ( before, when most were $800.00 and up). The customer wanted to "give" it to me along with 2 inkjets in TRADE for a repair on his B&W laser, (My cost $20 bucks + 1 hour). Well I passed on the deal if "only" because the $500 Speed Demon needed all 4 toner/drum units ....cost: $1200 !!!

I've seen the jaw drop a thousand times " Hunh!? I only paid $___ for the Whole Machine!!) Yup...

BTW: Now you have a $100-500.00 hunk of "E-Waste" which you now must PAY to discard (Legally) . Suddenly you realize the reality of Color Printing... It goes WAY beyond the initial cost. Check the "yield" per toner. A mid-line model may give you 2-3 times the pages per cartridge for only $15-20.00 more per toner. The replacement intervals for rollers, drums, fusers etc may be every 100,000 pages on a $600 model but only 12,000 on the $299 base unit. In closing I can honestly say that in most cases that at "Worst", HP is the "lesser" of all evils. And most of the time the best cost per page/performance choice. And for that you pay the extra $100 or whatever on the "front end" over the other brands but make it up over the life of the machine. And true to everything , you get what you paid for . Don't cry and put down the 2550L because it has only 64MB non- upgradable. YOU bought it. You're not a victim of HP. You just made a mistake by making a buying decision based on a presumption , NOT facts. There's TOO Much going on out there and it changes TOO fast. Do your homework , make your best decision, go buy it today, use it by tomorrow and enjoy the result of your educated decision. Pay no attention next week when it's on the clearance table (my fave). IMHO

Printer won't print if it detect the page count reach their pre-set max count. You must replace the consumables in question before it print again. It don't let user replace the consumables on their own decision based on print quality. The consumables include drum kit (average 7000 pages -- low), high load toner (average 4000).

The "tray" that HP refers to is the fold-out multi-purpose tray on the front of the printer. I too was confused about this standard tray at first. I solved the problem by purchasing the HP2550LN, which includes a print server, as well as an additional 250 sheet paper tray that sits under the printer.
