"not worth the bother" on by gottaluvamac

Pros: what few sheets DID print properly looked great. Also, the networking setup was ready in seconds with both mac and pcs all on the same network.

Cons: (eyes rolling and heavy sigh) I started printing flyers on HP glossy paper from Indesign and a pdf file that was 650k in size. I only got to 40 sheets printed and by then, it jammed 3 times, timed out many times, even after turning off the time out.

Summary: I went online, read many reviews after the fact and found many of the same complaints as I ran into. After the 3rd paper jam and it timed out, I boxed it up and took it back to the store. I'm an experienced graphic artist and computer literate and know macs and pc programs very well and I don't judge electronic equipment based upon a few bad comments and like to see for myself and in this case, I wish I had not wasted my time purchasing it. HP needs to scrap this one and fix the issues. I am also not very opinionated (wink). Just throwing in my 2 cents, take it or leave it :)

"Ok printer for seldom use, shop around for heavy duty" on by ll865r

Pros: Small form factor, good for tight spaces such as a college dorm or efficiency apartment. 96mb memory included. Color reproduction is good.

Cons: Slow in color mode, noisy printing. Smart card interface on front is tricky to set up where it can be recognized on a network. Memory release issues when printing with the windows OS spooler turned off.

Summary: Good for seldom printing, but I would not recommend as a workhorse business printer as advertised. I bought this one with a $100 off on a sales tax holiday, so I got it for a decent price. First off, when installing the supplied printer drivers, Windows XP pro on several of my machines would not finish the installation due to errors, so I downloaded the driver from HP which worked. Secondly after installing the memory card interfaces on the front of the unit appeared on my network, but would not allow access. Thirdly, the print speed is laboriously slow and the unit itself is rather noisy compared with other laserjets, something I was rather dissapointed by since it has built in networking. (I have an inexpensive black laserjet 1012 when coupled with a HP laserjet network box beats this on hands down on speed) Occassionally it will cycle for no apparent reason. Thinking 96mb would be sufficient for printing needs, I thought I could speed up printing by disabling the spooling feature of windows. This did improve speed but I found after several print jobs that the memory was not being released by the printer.

Overall, Its a good step up from the inkjet models for the occassional use, but for a business workhorse I would pay more for a more reliable model. I have heard the supplied cartridges allow for approximately 750 copies, as compared to the 2500 to 4000 supplied with typical laserjets, so the replacement cartridges are a consideration here.

"not too bad, for the money" on by petesgalaxy

Pros: easy setup, networked to 6 workstations in no time at all, prints decent, after firmware upgrade and newer drivers installed everything works great. Good buy so far.

Cons: not the speediest printer in the lot, but i'm not in that big of a hurry. Documentation sucks, but thats why they made google. the single paper feed in front was not explained anywhere, i cant get printer to show up in windows network.

Summary: if you want a good (not great) color laser printer, for 300 dlrs, 299.95 at local retail store. this is it. As the saying goes, if you want it cheap, it aint fast or good. it you want it good, it aint fast or cheap, if you want it fast, it aint good or cheap! but it works for me.

"Constant paper jams, cycling, thinking..." on by bleahbear

    Pros: Prints pretty.

Cons: Prints 2-5 pages, then jams. No actual jam in the printer, just claims it's jammed. Click "OK" (after doing nothing), "Initiates" for almost a minute, then prints 2-5 more pages. Once in a while will do "Cleaning" for 1-3 minutes.

Summary: I can say without exaggeration that in the 30 years I've been programming, I've never seen a printer jam as much as this one. Including dot matrix printers from the 80's.

"Poor performance, inconsistent and very disappointing." on by bush_marv

Pros: Worked well in the beginning. Speed ok, but understood it wasn't 'fast' when I bought it.

Cons: Good sprinter, but terrible at long distance. After a year, quality of printing is extremely poor, even after cleaning/adjustments. Expensive cartridges. Noisy. Paper jams with heavier stock paper, especially business cards.

Summary: When it works, it works well. Hasn't worked well in over a year..... Ink hog. Cartridges don't last long. Will exhaust your color cartridges if "color" is your default printing mode. Bought this my small business almost two years in hopes to print my own advertisements, business cards, correspondence, logos, etc. Unfortunately, it worked well for about 6-8months, then has been nothing but a head ache. Unreliable performance. Like a box of chocolates, it's always a surprise when I use it. Goes through cartridges like water, even when managing printing output via b/w and color selections. Even when cartridges indicate plenty of toner, printing quality smears with red shadows. I clean it regularly, but no joy. Based on long-term costs and poor performance, I would not recommend this printer to anyone.
