"Great budget monochrome laser printer, easy set-up, MOST IMPORTANT: Great and sharp-looking prints"
Pros: small footprint, space-saving, extremely LIGHT, easy and intuitive set-up, fast initial printout,
Cons: no paper storage tray
Summary: When I first received the HP printer, I was extremely surprised that it was so LIGHT! It weighs in at only 5 kilogrammes. I was using the earlier HP 1010 which weighs a ton (15 Kg). Set-up was so simple, a child could do it. Just plug in the power, connect the USB 2.0 cable and the computer immediately recognised it and printed a test page for your perusal. It was that quick. I did not need to even install any drivers with the CD provided. Initally I had intended to purchase a Brother, or an Oki which online forumers say gives good discounts. But another forumer complained about the poor printout and said he regretted buying Brother which really put me off. I have also read the glowing reports about this particular HP 1020 that finally convinced me of its merits. I am glad to say that I am happy with the printout which I deem to be the most important factor in my getting a laser printer. The toner may cost more than others but since replacement is infrequent (only about once a year), it really does not matter that much. At only 9 inches deep, it really saved me a lot of extra space. My older HP 1010 was three times the width deep !!!Updated
I also found that HP allows you to print to the very last drop (pun intended). There is also an economy mode whereby it prints less fine to save on toners but the printout is almost indistinguishable from the BEST mode. Also on economy mode, printout is superfast, an added bonus if you have to rush off print jobs. HP even teaches you to "jiggle" the toner to get the last gram of toner out of the machine if your printout starts to "fade". *Jiggle* as in jiggling a cocktail shaker. This ensures that the toner powder gets evenly distributed in the cartridge, saving on costs
